# What Size Bike Frame Do I Need

## How to determine the size of the bike frame?

A bicycle frame is something without which the other components of the bike would not contact, would not interact with each other. Without a frame, a bicycle would not represent a single whole, it would be impossible to ride on it even to the next block, not to mention long trips and bike trips.

## Why it is important to know the frame size?

To bend in three deaths on a teenage bike or, on the contrary, with a short stature, barely reach the pedals with your feet, because the upper frame tube almost rests between your legs is a dubious pleasure.

## Determination methods

You can find out the size of the bike frame using a simple (universal) method or using the most comprehensive calculation method (it relies on other characteristics of the frame and the future bike owner).

### Universal rule

This simple method is based on the meaning of human height. Stand against a wall and place a book or tablet against the top of your head. Mark a point on the wall equal in height to the top of your head. Measure this distance with a tape measure.

Find the resulting height value or the closest to it in the table.

Biker’s height, cm

Frame height for city bike or hybrid bike, inches

Mountain frame height, inches

Letter size of all bikes

To check that the selected frame size suits you, stand above the bike frame. In this case, the front end of the saddle should be at the level of the lower back. The distance from the top tube of the frame to the crotch should be 10 cm on average.

### Choosing a women’s bike

For ladies, the above size values are slightly different.

Girl’s height, cm

Size, inches

The girl can check if the bike suits her in the same way. if she prefers a frame with the upper tube raised high, as on a man’s bike. Take a road bike as an example. In cases where this tube is lowered, or a folding bike model with a single reinforced down tube is used, this step can be skipped.

### For a child or teenager

Choosing a bicycle for a teenager in terms of frame size is not much different from similar actions for men and women. But in case of emergency braking, the child must reach with his feet to the road on which he is driving. if, for example, the brakes have failed.

Child’s height, cm

Wheel diameter, inches

26, 27.5, 28, 29 (by frame size and other parameters)

In Soviet times, when the choice of bicycle models was small and numbered only 15-20 models, the main emphasis for adults of different heights was also placed on the diameter of the wheel, and not on the geometry of the frame.

### Another calculation formula for men

Using a tape measure and the same board or book, measure the distance from the floor to the crotch, and not to the crown of the head. Multiply this value by 0.57 for mountain bikes (including full suspension). For track bikes, a factor of 0.63 is used. When choosing a road model, the multiplier is 0.66. A touring bike has a multiplier for the size of the frame. 0.61, if a shock absorber seatpost is used. another 5 cm is subtracted from this value. To convert the result to inches, divide the result by 2.54.

### Scientific approach

A more accurate and reasonable calculation will allow you to get the maximum comfort from the ride on the bike you choose.

To calculate ETT, the length of a line parallel to the road surface is taken. This line starts at the center of the head tube (front end of the frame) and ends at the point where the seat tube extends. The beginning and end of this line coincide with the center of the section of both pipes. The following ranges of values allow choosing the most comfortable bike according to the rule using ETT values.

The latter are for racing, sports bikes.

Biker height

ETT value

This approach is used in conjunction with the previous one. That is, along with the size, it is recommended to check the value of the effective bicycle length. Choosing a model that is too short will prevent you from keeping your back straight while riding. A bike that is too long will also stretch your joints and back muscles.

## Influence of height on frame length

On modern bikes it is impossible to adjust the handlebar height. The exception is city (road) bicycles with one or more speeds. You will not be able to move the stem to the desired level, which cannot be said about the saddle height. Consider road bikes for an example. Their speed is due not only to lightness (complete absence of unnecessary parts, lightweight carbon frame), but also to the rider’s fit.

It is much easier to ride, overcoming air (and wind) resistance, “spreading out” over the frame, when the position (height) of the head approximately coincides with the position of the rear.

The length of the road frame is noticeably longer than that of the standard road builder. Soviet bicycles, including single-speed bicycles, were produced with longer frames than modern single-speed bicycles of the same characteristics. However, height also affects frame length.

Choosing too “short” bike, the owner must somehow compensate for this disadvantage by raising (or increasing, if adjustment is not available) the stem. The seatpost is also raised (or extended) as much as possible. All types of racing and touring bicycles have a long frame well suited for tall people. when riding uphill or against the wind, such a person spends much less effort.

## Tips from experienced cyclists

The main requirement for choosing a frame is the length and size of your routes. When you buy a starting (walking) fee, you think you will save, but in reality you are not. You will pay for the savings with overtraining, fatigue and joint pain.

For a walking bike, the frame size is not important: the loads are small, as are the distances.

Once you have passed the beginner level, determine how high you will lower the handlebars and raise the saddle. The frame should not be short. You may be switching from a city bike to a cross country, hybrid or racing bike.

For women, the bike is chosen mainly from mountain, two-suspension, road or with a special low geometry without an upper tube (including folding). The handlebars are taken higher, the saddle is wider. For lovers of fast driving, the racing model is suitable. If the height does not fully match the specific size of the frame, the smaller of them is chosen for walking, the larger for frequent and long.

If you buy a bike with 29-inch wheels. the frame for it is taken one size smaller than for 26, 27.5 and 28-inch wheels.

For taller and heavier cyclists (size L) bikes with a reinforced frame are chosen. thicker tubes. Too big will cause occasional perineal bruising when you get off your bike. If it is impossible to test the bike in action (when it is purchased via the Internet), check the ETT value, it should correspond to your height and weight.

In the following video, you will learn tips for choosing the right bike frame size.

To buy a bike that is comfortable for yourself, you need to take into account such an important parameter. the selection of the size of the bike. Correctly selected bike height directly depends on your own, correctly measured height. Unmistakable readings are needed to determine the appropriate frame size.

Each bike should be used for its intended purpose. For general riding, a hardtail is preferable. As for double suspensions (downhill bicycles), they are used mainly in extreme conditions.

With regularly selected parameters, back pain, discomfort in the knees are excluded, and traveling by bike will become a real pleasure. If you plan to buy a bike in order to use it in future competitions, unmistakable growth plays a decisive role.

## How are the dimensions of the bicycle frame marked?

Any self-respecting manufacturer produces bicycle frames in several sizes: for walking bicycles. from 2-3, road racing. up to 10 or more.

The overall size of the frame (height and length) is determined precisely by the size. So, when the size of the bicycle frame decreases or increases, the bicycle pipes change proportionally (we are talking about the seat tube, lower and upper).

Sizes are marked in inches, indicated in centimeters, designated conventionally (in Latin characters). Usually, a particular device has either an even size class or an odd one. Most often, the size of the bike frame is indicated on it. It is somewhat less common at another point. The seller will help you find the index.

Only 6 sizes are marked with Latin letters:

• XS stands for smallest.
• S is treated as small.
• M equals average dimensions.
• L large sizes are indicated.
• XL means even more.
• XXL interprets the maximum.

It turns out that for each size there are 2 sizes of the bicycle frame.

The height of the bicycle device should be comparable to the height of the seat tube itself. To measure the height, it is sufficient to measure the distance between the carriage axle and the top of the seat tube. With regard to different manufacturers, it is worth noting that they often measure the height of the seat tube in different ways. Therefore, it is understandable that, despite the identical marking, models from different manufacturers may have different parameters.

At the same time, the parameters of the dimensions are determined by the angle of inclination of the pipes, by various design solutions of individual parts of the bicycle frame. And further! Bicycle frames of even the same company meet dissimilar geometry. It all depends on the purpose of the bike.

It turns out that it is impossible to pick up the size of a bicycle based on clear signs. Even bike models that are completely dissimilar in size are often suitable in height for one person. This takes into account both the manufacturer and the model itself. Guided by special tables, you can roughly understand the correspondence of human height with the size of the velos of the most famous variations.

For a successful selection of a size, it is not enough to take into account your overall height. It is also necessary to take into account the length of your legs, because a person can have them either longer or shorter. With a detailed study of the table, choosing the right size will not be difficult.

## Dimensions of bicycle frames. Bike frame sizes, wheels by height. how to choose a size?

Bicycle frame size (size) is the height and length of the frame, size (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, etc.) in inches, centimeters (44, 45, 46, 47, etc.).) or conventional units (XS, S, M, L, XL) in the table “choose a frame. how tall?” The vertical (seatpost) tube is most often measured, sometimes the length of the upper tube (from the handlebars to the saddle). We will help you choose a bike frame of your size for your height!

When choosing a bike, start with wheel size and frame size. Different types of frames provide for different (vertical, inclined, recumbent) fit and several sizes of bicycle frames for different sizes.

The size of the frame in terms of height must be selected from the size of the wheel: the larger the wheel, the smaller the size. The popular Stealth Navigator 500 series bike is available with three wheel diameters and 3-4 frame sizes. Let’s look at the height of 175-180 cm which frame is suitable for growth (table).

## Bicycle wheel dimensions. How to choose a bicycle wheel size (diameter) for height?

The table shows popular bicycle wheel sizes and heights for adults and kids bikes. Large bicycles in one wheel size are available in several sizes. The table shows the average value, you can choose the diameter of the wheel individually by height.

When driving in the city, it is better to choose a bike with an average wheel size of 24 or 26 inches. When driving on highways, asphalt roads and rough terrain, wheels should be 26, 28, 29 inches. Large bicycle wheels reduce energy consumption when traveling at high speeds and transmit less vibration to the handlebars and saddle. Recommendation: For a height of about 150 cm or less, limit the choice of a bicycle to 24 “wheels for city riding and 26” wheels for riding on asphalt and dirt roads. Bicycles with a wheel size of 20 inches are easy to store and transport, but less convenient to ride. With a large frame size (16 inches and above. adult models), these models with small wheels are less stable on uneven roads when driving. The position of the center of mass and the distribution of the rider’s weight depends on the size of the bicycle wheels and the frame design. During the ride, there is a constant transfer of the rider’s weight between the handlebars, saddle and pedals. On bicycles with contact pedals (hooks or tour clips), the leg force is applied to both pedals simultaneously. To reduce fatigue and stress on the knee joint, select a smaller frame size or a specially designed frame. On a bike with a regular frame, it may be necessary to change the height, shape and stem. The height and width of the bicycle seat is selected individually.

## How to choose the right bike size for an adult or child?

Everything seems to be good. both the color is suitable, and the mechanics are working perfectly, but you get tired quickly, and skating turns into torture in an hour or two. All clear. The bike is the wrong size. To avoid such disappointments, you need to know what sizes of velor are, and how they fit your height.

## Without theory. nowhere

Almost all bike frames come in a wide variety of sizes. And each manufacturer classifies them differently. Almost every. Each bicycle model has at least 3-4 sizes and, accordingly, different markings. Frames are marked by height in letter and digital form. The defining parameter for any bike frame is the seat tube height. It is measured from the center of the carriage to the tube cutoff and can be specified either in inches or centimeters.

The length of the seat tube, of course, is not the only indicator that characterizes the size of the bike, but the main one. The geometry of the frame is also determined by the angles of inclination of the pipes at the joints, the length of these pipes and their relative position. Therefore, it is unambiguous to say that such and such a number is suitable for a specific person, but such and such is not suitable, it is impossible to say.

The tables, which we will definitely provide, can and should be used. But this is not a panacea for all ills. In addition to the size of the frame in terms of height, there is a difference in the size of the wheel, which should not be forgotten either. There are many options for frames with different lengths of the upper tube, which greatly affects the fit and unloading of the shoulder joints, elbows, and hands. The stem length also greatly affects the fit and has a ton of adjustments. The wheelbase is critical when driving in different conditions, the angle of inclination of the fork affects the handling and stability. there are a lot of things, so let’s start simple.

## Frame marking by size

There is a tradition all over the world to label all bicycle frames with letters, numbers and their combinations. Consider the main types of frame markings from different manufacturers.

There are a total of 6 frame sizes for seat tube height:

• XS is the smallest bike size for the smallest riders;
• S. small;
• M. medium frame variant, the most common;
• L. slightly above average;
• XL. large;
• XXL. well, very large.

And this is where the confusion begins, because each size corresponds to two options in numerical terms. This equivalent is conditional and serves to roughly determine the correspondence of your physical data with the data of a particular frame. And here is this table:

If someone is interested, then the data in this table is calculated using the formula for selecting an adult bike. According to your parameters, where “d” is the length of your legs, and “D” is the size of the frame. Now we will try to determine by the formula: D = d0.56 / 2.54. The formula uses two coefficients. 0.56 is the ratio of leg length to height, and 2.54 is the conversion of inches to centimeters. Such arithmetic.

Since all people are different in size and the same ratio of legs and height cannot be found, this number is also very approximate.

But there are times when your data correspond to the overall dimensions of two frames at once. Not buying the same two is great at once. What to do in this case? Think.

• If I am planning an active cycling lifestyle, then I will choose a smaller bike size, because the smaller bike is easier to handle and therefore weighs less.
• If I am full, then it will be difficult for me to climb a high frame.
• If I am thin and skinny, then I need to choose a frame slightly larger to seem more weighty and not to be blown away by the wind. Quite serious.
• If I have already bought a bike and it doesn’t suit me with its size, although the tables all agree, then I probably forgot about the saddle and handlebar adjustments, which in most cases have a very wide range. In addition, I always have the opportunity to change the stem or seat tube.
• If I have hands down to my knees, then I’ll take a bigger bike. In which case, you can always reduce the adjustment.

You can also find markings for both a child’s bike and a women’s bike. Let’s pay some attention to them.

## Dimensions of children’s bicycles

The manufacturer, when producing a children’s bike, knows that the baby is growing very quickly. And so he makes some size adjustments and tries to make the frame in such a way that the adjustment range is as wide as possible. However, the dimensions of the frame should not be taken into account as much as the diameter of the bicycle wheels. The controllability is high and the maximum speed depends on this parameter. You should not measure your baby with a caliper, you still do not know how he will grow in six months or even a couple of months, so a child’s bike should be chosen with some margin.

Here is a sample size chart for children’s bicycles.

## What are the sizes of the bike frame?

A bicycle frame is one of the main parts of a bicycle, serving as a connecting part between the entire device itself and the rest of the components. The variety of bicycle frames offers a wide selection, as well as a high level of functionality, which leads to a wide range of applications.

## Why is frame size important?

The size of the bike frame is not just a conventional parameter, but also an important technical indicator that underlies the technical dimensions. If you raise or vice versa, reduce this indicator, then the pipe under the saddle, as well as the upper and lower levels, will change. The correct choice of the bike size will allow you to protect yourself from many excesses on the road and unpleasant situations in principle. Creating the necessary comfort during the journey, avoiding unpleasant sensations in certain parts of the body. all this ensures the correct choice of size. If you need a bicycle for playing sports or directly participating in competitions, then needless to say that the correct frame size, in this case, is especially important.

Bearing in mind the dimensional indicators, one must remember that there are three types of designations: inches, conventional units and, in fact, centimeters. Directly represented sizes are usually either even or not.

## Choosing a frame by height

There are many methods for selecting a frame part and growth is one of the key points. The most convenient option is offered to your attention:

• You need to stand against a wall Measure the space between the ground and the crotch. The result should be multiplied by 0.57 if you need a mountain bike; if a trekking bike is needed, multiply by 0.63 and by 0.66 for a road design. If you need a value in inches, just divide by 2.54. Total number. bike frame size.
• But we must understand that this dimensional number is a rather subjective parameter, due to the possible error and different riding styles. In addition, do not forget about such an important aspect as the length of the bike. It is this aspect that affects the overall riding position of the bike. But on the other hand, you can influence this if you know some tricks:
• Install a shorter stem if the bike ride is too low. This also includes changing the angle, if the stem is adjustable. The result is a comfortable and upright fit. Do not forget about moving the saddle forward on the frames, in the event that the center of gravity of the body is too moved backward. Finally, riding style is an important element that determines size. Classic styles mean classic sizes. A more aggressive riding style means smaller frames for better handling. But too small frames are not comfortable. The main thing is to find the “golden mean”.

## How to choose a frame for your city bike?

The city bike is the most sought-after type of bike today and you need to rely on a rear shock to find the right frame size. But this is only if your height does not exceed 170 cm. The rear shock absorber or otherwise the seat post in many models does not allow the saddle to be lowered to the end. This is why the frame should be around 16 ” and not 18 as it usually is.

Growth, in principle, plays an important role. Knowing it, you can roughly understand which bike, with which frame you need.

As a rule, you can find sample tables on the Internet showing the dimensional characteristics of the frame, based on your height and other important indicators. It is necessary to focus on these tables, and, of course, on your own feelings and creating comfort individually for you.

In order not to be mistaken in technical indicators, when choosing the frame size, you must use the following universal recommendations:

• First of all, you need to test the bike and understand whether this assembly is right for you. You need to stand above the bike frame in such a way that the saddle rests on your back and relax a little, accepting the state that you think is most comfortable for you. The distance in this position, between the upper tube and the crotch itself should be 5 to 15 cm. The distance should not be too great, because then you will not feel the necessary comfort and stability in principle. Small spaces can cause many injuries.
• Effective bike length. This is more scientific than practical. Scientifically, you need to calculate the length of the line parallel to the ground that runs from the top of the tube to the extension of the straight seat tube. This method will help you determine the size of the frame most accurately. Pay attention to basic size charts. They will help you navigate when choosing frames. Varieties of frames: this is very important and you should pay attention to the variations in order to understand how to use them later. It can be versatile cross-country, down hill frames, cruisers and, finally, road bike frames. Each of the types has its own purpose and purpose. Therefore, it is also important to understand what kind of bike you have: for simple walks or competitions, for example.

Thus, choosing the right frame size for your bike should be as careful as possible. As a result, you can get a completely uncontrollable structure and inconvenient in principle. Choose the dimensions carefully and test the bike before buying. At the stage of selecting a frame, you need to understand: whether you can ride comfortably in this design and whether you can customize it for yourself or is it better to change it for something more convenient. In many cases, changing the type of frame, and not just its quality parameters, helps: for example, for down hill frames and mountain bikes, it is necessary to observe the safety distances that. Failure to comply with this aspect can lead to not very positive emotions and unpleasant situations directly related to your safety.

## BIKE FRAME SIZE AND GROWTH. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE?

Frame size is the biggest challenge when choosing a bike. Here I have a frame that is not in height on my aggressor. Velodrive.ru has some good thoughts on this matter. Everything was invented before us

Choosing the right frame size is one of the most important parameters when buying a new bike. This parameter is closely related to many others: the type of bike, riding style, personal preferences, etc.

Almost all bicycle frames today come in a range of sizes. They can be from two or three for simple walking bicycles, up to ten or more for road racing cars of classical geometry. Dimension marking can be either digital (in inches or centimeters) or alphabetic. Typically, the size is “tied” to the height of the frame’s seat tube, which is measured from the center of the BB to the top of the seat tube. Some firms measure the height of the seat tube differently, so the same markings on bikes from different firms (and sometimes even on different lines of machines from the same firm) may differ. In addition, the differences in frame sizes are not due only to different seat tube heights: almost all sizes, tube angles, and often design solutions of individual frame elements change. In addition, depending on the purpose, the frames can also have different geometry from each other, even from the same manufacturer. Riders generally choose a frame based on the effective length of the upper tube (the so-called ETT value) and parameters in general, and they look at the size last. But for the vast majority of cyclists, it’s best to focus on frame size.

This short excursion into the shaky world of bicycle frame dimensions is not given to confuse novice cyclists. but to explain that there are no absolutely clear criteria in the spirit of “a frame of such and such size is needed for a height of 170 cm, and nothing else”. over, bicycles of noticeably different sizes may be suitable for a particular person. depending on the company and the model line. Therefore, the following correspondences of human height and frame size have rather large “tolerances”. Nevertheless, they will allow you to understand what you need to focus on and, in most cases, successfully independently choose a bike of the correct size.

Here’s a simple, practical way to size your frame: Stand over the bike frame with your back touching the saddle. In this position, the distance between the upper frame tube and the crotch should be approximately 50-150 mm (for small bicycles this distance will be shorter due to the strong inclination of the upper frame tube). Also, the distance may be less in the case of certain proportions of the human body (in particular, with relatively short legs). Ask a sales assistant to hold the handlebars and adjust the saddle height, sit on the bike, put your feet on the pedals. Enjoy a comfortable ride, you can even pedal back to get a better feel for the ride of your chosen car. This quick fit is very useful.

Bicycle frame size (size) is a parameter that affects the length and height of the frame, i.e. by its overall size. With an increase or decrease in the size of the bike frame, the upper, lower, and also the seat tube change proportionally.

By choosing the right bike size, you will ensure yourself a comfortable daily ride without back and knee pain. When purchasing a bike for sports or competition, choosing the right frame size is even more important.

There are 3 types of designations: “(inches), conventional units (XS, S, M, L, XL) and centimeters (cm). The size range of a particular bike model is usually either even or odd.

## Which means the size of the bike frame. Dimensions of the bike frame by height

When choosing a bike, start with wheel size and frame size. Different types of frames provide for different (vertical, inclined, recumbent) fit and several sizes of bicycle frames for different sizes.

The classic diamond-shaped bike frame divides the seat tube into two triangles. A comfortable, correct fit requires choosing the right bike frame and adjusting the saddle length and stem and tilt. The main types of frames are shown in the table.

The table of bicycle sizes by height for children shows how to choose a model taking into account age. For boys and girls, height can vary significantly: refer to this table to select the value of the wheel size and carefully read the description for each model. For example, for a height of 125-130 cm, a children’s bicycle with a wheel size of 18 inches will be the easiest to control when buying a new one. choose wheel size 20 in regular frame size or 24 inch low frame wheel. To choose a bike based on height and weight (depending on body type and physical condition), find the ratio of wheel size, frame and weight in the table. With a lot of weight, it will be difficult to move on the mountain geometry of the frame (a large forward lean with the transfer of weight to the handlebars). Choose from rugged road or city models with a rigid front fork. Better is a large spring loaded saddle and an upright fit. With a weight over 140-150 kg, reinforced (with an increased number of spokes) road and touring bikes are useful. We will help with an individual selection of a model!

## What size bike do I need?

Once you’ve decided on the bike that suits you best, you’re ready to shop. However, before handing over cash or credit card, you should do a set-up to ensure that the bike that best suits your riding style and needs is also the correct physical size. Setting up your bike will go a long way towards making it comfortable and successful. This is especially important for children as it can be dangerous to buy a bike that they can grow into if it is too large. You can navigate through this article using the links below:

### Installing the bike

To avoid feeling cramped or awkward and make the most of the pedals, make sure the size of the frame, seat and handlebars of the bike is correct.

### Bike size calculator

Some websites provide tools for calculating the size of your bike’s frame. They are usually a good starting point when buying a bike. They measure your height and length along the inside of your bike and return the recommended frame size.

### Frame size

The size of the bike frame must be right for you, otherwise cycling can become heavy and uncomfortable. If you’re feeling cramped, you won’t be able to extend your leg for a full cycle to maximize power. Alternatively, if the frame is too large, you also won’t get all-wheel drive from leg rotation. A quick way to check your frame size. Stand over the frame with both feet on the ground If you have an inch or so between the frame of a racing, touring, or hybrid bike and your crotch, that should be roughly correct. For a mountain bike, the distance to the frame should be greater. The best way for children to ensure the correct frame size. This is to put the child in the seat so that he can place the pads of his feet on the ground and have a comfortable reach to the steering wheel. You should also make sure they have a 25-50mm gap between the bar and their crotch if they are over the center bar.

### Seat position

Some riders prefer a seat that is slightly tilted forward or backward, but most prefer a seat that is level enough that there is no sensation of sliding forward or sliding off the back. It can take trial and error to figure out what works best for you. But in general, the seat should be positioned so that your legs are naturally above the pedals, and when you extend your leg during a cycle, it is almost completely straight at the bottom. You don’t need to move your hips from side to side to reach the pedals.

Handlebar position is more important than many novice riders think. Incorrect tilting angle can lead to back pain, shoulder sprains, or wrist pain. Usually the size of the handlebars corresponds to the size of the bike and comes in different widths. On racing and touring bikes, they are usually equal to shoulder width, while on mountain bikes they are wider.

can also be placed at different heights. On road bikes the handlebars are about an inch below the top of the saddle, while on mountain bikes they are even lower to provide a lower center of gravity, while on hybrids they are usually higher for a more upright position. If you prefer a more upright position so you can really look around and not feel so stretched, then raise the handlebars higher. This position does mean you are a little less aerodynamic, but if you have drop-down bars you can still drop lower on windy days. If you prefer to go forward, you should set the handlebars at the same height as the seat. Whatever you do, pay attention to the minimum insertion mark and do not secure the handlebars higher than this, otherwise the stem will not lock properly in the frame.

### Wheels

Wheel size. this is the size of the wheel diameter with the tire fitted. Usually the size is written on the sidewall of the tire, for example 26 x 2.2 inches, a typical mountain bike size, which means the wheel is 26 inches and the tire is 2.2 inches wide. Wheels are classified by size based on their primary use for highway cycling, off-roading, hiking and BMX. For example, the wheels used for stunts and jumps in BMX will be smaller to support the additional load on them.

Mountain bikes are usually 26 inches (559 mm) or 29 inches (622 mm) in size and are usually recorded in inches because they were manufactured in the U.S. The larger size is often used in cyclocross and for larger mountain bike riders. Cruisers and pleasure bikes are often the same size. Road bikes, touring bikes and most hybrids are likely to have 700c (metric) wheels, also known as 29 “wheels, which are much thinner (typically 18-25mm wide). Larger rims roll easier than smaller rims, although some triathletes and athletes in a variety of sports now use 650c wheels, which have lower spinning masses. Older road bikes may have 27-inch wheels. BMX bikes generally come in two sizes; either 500 mm (20 inches) or 600 mm (24 inches).

The wheel size for children’s bicycles is different and depends on the age of the child. Usually, small exercise wheels are used for young children and can be lifted higher as their confidence and skill increase. Children aged 3-5 will usually require 300 mm (12 “) wheels, while children 5-7 may require 400 mm (16″) wheels and children 7-10 years old. 500mm (20“) For children over 10 years old, bicycles with a diameter of 600mm (24 ”) or even 700mm (26“), which are similar in size to adult bikes.

### Pedals / Cranks

To ensure that your cycling motion is transmitted to the bike at maximum efficiency, you should consider using pedals without clamps or toe clamps. This way you can secure your feet and every movement you make will help propel the bike forward better. Usually a cage, such as toe clamps, is considered bulkier than pedals without clamps, but they allow you to use your regular shoes and save you the hassle of buying cycling shoes. Clampless pedals come in a variety of styles for road and mountain bikes. The pedals used for mountain biking are reversible, making them easy to attach to rugged and changeable terrain.

## How to measure a bike frame?

Measuring a bike frame is very important, especially when you buy or sell a bike, or are trying to determine how tall a person must be to ride it. You get the frame size by measuring the appropriate part of the bike, depending on the type of bike. If the bike is not properly measured, the rider may not fit correctly, resulting in poor posture, discomfort and even pain for the rider. This guide will help you measure your bike correctly. You can follow the links below:

For detailed instructions and charts for measuring a specific type of bike, try our online bike measurement tool. It shows you exactly what to measure for your bike and provides a table of suitable riders for each bike size. This information is useful when selling a bike, as many casual buyers will simply want to know if a bike is right for them or not.

### General measurements on a bike

There are several ways to measure a bike frame. Below we will tell you about the simplest and most popular ones.

Center to Top (C-T)

This refers to the length of the seat tube from base to top. Base. it is the round piece at the bottom holding the axle (known as the bottom bracket) and the top piece. this is where the seatpost enters the seat tube.

Applicable bikes: Road, Mountain, Comfort, Hybrid

Center to Center (C-C)

This is the same as the C-T measurement, except that the top of the seat tube is defined by the intersection of the center of the top tube and the center of the seat tube, which is more common in European manufacturers.

Top tube (TT)

This is the length of the top tube, which is the main connecting tube between the seat tube and the headset (at the front of the bike). It is measured from the centers of the intersecting tubes.

Applicable bikes: BMX

Wheel diameter (D)

Calculated based on wheel diameter, or more simply, tire size. Bicycles measured this way have frames designed for the tire size, so the larger the tire, the larger the frame.

Applicable bicycles: Cruisers, Kids

The whole bike

Some bikes use a simple general bicycle dimension such as small, medium, large, x-large, or even universal size. This is possible because bikes have a more relaxed upright riding position and are easily adjusted to accommodate a wider range of riders within each bike size. Bike size is usually indicated on a sticker somewhere on the frame.

Applicable bicycles: Folding, electric

### Measuring wheel size

Most bicycles use one of three wheel sizes: 26 “, 27” (old bikes) and 700C (or 29 “). Knowing the wheel size of your bike is useful when you want to replace tubes or ties, or when selling a bike, as buyers may be interested in this information. Determine your bike’s tire size by looking at your existing tire or wheel rim. The first is the number. this is the diameter, and the second is the number. tire width.

Example tire size: 26 “x 2”

If you don’t have an old tire or can’t find the tire size on the rim, you can measure the rim size yourself. The easiest way to do this. measure the circumference of the rim around the seat bead. Tire bead. it is the innermost part of the tire that sits inside the rim on the bead seat. Using a soft measuring tape, such as the one used by a tailor, wrap it around the edge along the bead seat (or as close as possible). This is the circumference of the bead seat. Convert it to millimeters (25.4 mm = 1 inch) and find the size in the table below:

 Measurement Common name 1979 mm 27 ″ 1954 mm 700C or 29 ″ 1756 mm 26 ″

Keep in mind that this wheel size applies to both the tire and tube. To learn more about rim sizes and less common sizes, visit Sheldon Brown’s Rim Size page.

### Measuring crank size (L)

While most bikes come with standard crank sizes, it is helpful to know the crank lengths, especially if you sell the bike online. You measure the connecting rods in millimeters (mm) from the center of the holes at each end of the connecting rod.
