Types of mountain bikes
Cross-country This bike was designed for off-road riding. As a rule, it is supplied with a front shock absorber. The lightness and strength of the design makes it convenient for travel both in the city and in rough terrain.
ATV (All-road bike). It is the most common type of mountain bike. Technical characteristics allow it to be used in a moderately sparing mode. Ideal for measured trips both in the city and in rough terrain.
DownHill. Designed for descents from the mountains and movement in rough terrain.
This bike is not intended for a calm and measured ride in urban conditions. The main function is to provide the most comfortable handling in conditions of descent and to preserve the frame structure during falls.
Which bike is better. mountain or road?
Choosing a bike is not easy. Especially in today’s marketplace, where advertisers eager to grab customer money are ready to present many stands and evidence that this bike is right for you. Nevertheless, if you turn on your brain and approach the question in detail, then choosing the right bike will not be difficult.
So, the first thing to do is to answer the questions: “In what road conditions will the bike be used? For what purposes is it purchased? ” If the bike will be used in off-road and rough terrain, then the choice should fall on a mountain bike.
Road Bike Vs Mountain Bike. What’s The Difference?
In contrast to the mountain bike, there is a road bike, incomparable with anything and irreplaceable when traveling around the city and asphalt.
In order to simplify the selection task, below is a detailed analysis of the most popular models of mountain and road bikes.
Before proceeding with the consideration of the differences, it is necessary to understand what subspecies mountain and road bikes are divided into.
Differences between mountain and road bikes
Road bikes are designed and built to travel at medium to high speeds on level ground, usually asphalt.
The frame design and low handlebar position provide the cyclist with a hunched-over riding position. This ensures that the maximum possible energy is transferred from the cyclist’s feet to the pedals.
Mountain bikes are designed for cross-country travel in off-road conditions. The frames are made as strong as possible to withstand aggressive use. Typically equipped with shock absorbers to absorb vibration and a wide handlebar for maximum control while driving.
Lightweight design for road bikes is a must to maintain speed and maximize ride comfort.
Since mountain bikes are not designed for high-speed rides, a heavy bike weight is a must in order to provide the necessary margin of safety and resistance to deformation during falls.
Wide tires with deep tread on mountain bikes increase the contact area of the rubber with the surface, which increases the friction force and, as a result, stability and flotation.
On the other hand, road bikes are narrow and smooth. One would think why not apply wide-tread technology to a road bike. But there is no particular need for this, because when rubber interacts with asphalt, a sufficiently high coefficient of friction is formed, which ensures a comfortable and confident ride.
Types of road bikes
Road bike. Designed for driving on a flat road at high speed.
City bike. Indispensable for measured and comfortable trips around the city and flat roads.
Touring. It is the most versatile road bike. Able to provide a comfortable ride both in city conditions and in light off-road conditions.
Mountain Bike To Road Bike Switch. What Will Surprise You The Most.
Generally, road bikes are designed to cover distances on smooth surfaces at high speeds and do not have a moveable suspension. This is not necessary because the bike is not designed to travel on uneven surfaces.
In contrast to the road bike, there is a mountain bike. For him, the presence of a shock absorber, at least a front one, is absolutely necessary.
Thus, having answered the above questions and figured out the technical characteristics, choosing a bike will not be difficult.
Is it possible to put road wheels on a mountain bike or “prepare the cart in winter
It so passed that I had not written to my journal for a year. It’s time to improve and write about something socially useful and interesting. I think that many who ride a bicycle a little further than a nearby park and, according to the old Russian tradition, ride a bicycle, which we call “mountain”, in the urban jungle, were interested in what it was like to ride a road bike with a “ram” handlebar, narrow wheels and sporty fit. You can fully understand this only by purchasing the appropriate projectile, but you can partially join civilized skating. by simply attaching the road bike wheels to your good old mountain bike. And winter is a great time for this DIY project, which I will now cover in detail.
Last summer I already wrote about my hobby for cycling and my own iron friend. Let me remind you that this is originally an inexpensive entry-level GT Avalanche 3.0 bike with a minimum level of costs, brought to a state where you ride it and do not think about reliability and comfort. It has a slightly better fork, industrial bearing hubs, hydraulic disc brakes, rolling wheels and some minor improvements. Why are the parts not high-end? Practice has shown that no matter how aggressively I tried to kill my bike, riding up the stairs of flights of stairs, jumping off all possible ledges, driving along bumpy and tree-rooted slopes in our forests, I cannot kill or at least cripple anything. Yes, there are more extreme conditions of use that would put my bike to its knees, but fortunately, they are above the bar of my self-preservation instinct.
So, hopefully convinced. Further I will say that, in principle, any “mountain” bike can be equipped with thin wheels for the highway. To do this, it is enough to pull off the old rubber, measure the width of the rim and choose a thinner wheel for yourself, guided by the table located at the very bottom of this page. It will tell you what is the minimum tire size you can fit on a particular rim width. Just set the wheels half an inch thinner and you will already notice a tremendous difference in riding pleasure. For those who are afraid of something radically new, the best option would be a wheel that combines a high tread and a fairly narrow width. Anyone who wants to try something new can safely take the narrowest that can be installed on a particular rim.
But here comes another problem. By installing a narrow and high-speed tire for asphalt surfaces on a regular “mountain” bike rim, the size of which, I recall, is 26 inches, we will slightly lose in wheel diameter due to the fact that the profile of such a tire will always be lower than that of a thick and “evil” one. This affects both the performance characteristics of the bike and its appearance: dystrophic thin wheels will not give it beauty. But you can and even need to bet. I guarantee you will like it.
There remains another and only sure way: to mount the large wheels from a road bike with a diameter of 28 inches on the bike. For these wheels, there are basically bicycles called “hybrid” bicycles, the frame of which has large seats to accommodate large rims, even with thick rubber. But as practice has shown, if you install such rims on an ordinary “mountain” bike, and put narrow and low rubber, then the dimensions of even an ordinary frame will allow you to place all this economy with a margin. Just in case, of course, it is worth measuring with a tape measure whether the desired wheels will fit into your frame. It is not difficult to understand what size you are interested in. Road tires are classified a little differently, but there is nothing difficult in their classification. The size is indicated in the form, for example, 622×25, where 622 is the rim diameter in mm, and 25 is the tire thickness in mm. Thus, the total diameter of the wheel will be approximately equal to 6222×25-10 = 665 mm. We subtract 10 mm because part of the tire is hidden inside the assembled rim. It remains only to measure the corresponding distance divided in half (radius) from the axis of the bushings to the frame tubes closest to the wheel.
Rim x 2 Road rims are marked in much the same way as tires (e.g. 622×15), but the second number indicates the width of the rim in millimeters. Let me remind you that the width of the rim determines the maximum and minimum width of the tires (table below). If the goal is not to take the narrowest rubber, then it is optimal, in my opinion, to purchase a rim with a width of about 17 mm.
2. Tires x 2 pcs. You can do more, which will be useful if a more capricious tire becomes unusable due to some crap on the road. I purchased 28mm Maxxis tires, which is slightly wider than most road bikes. Knowing my riding style, I am sure that it will be more comfortable with them.
3. Cameras x 2 pcs. Again, you can and even need more. The cameras also come in different thicknesses and fit different tires, so this is where you need to watch. There is also a difference in nipples: while conventional 26-inch cameras usually have an auto-nipple, the highway is the domain of the Presta nipple. In order not to have to buy a new pump, I took the expensive and versatile Schwalbe cameras with an auto-nipple.
3. Bushings x 2 pcs. Best of all the same as on the main wheels if disc brakes.
4. Rotors for disc brakes x 2 pcs. Again, any quality will do, but better the same as you have.
5. Bolts for rotors. You can find special ones with a round head, or you can take ordinary M5x10 in hardware with a cylindrical head for a Torx wrench (hexagon). Note that the front wheel needs just special bolts with a low head, so you will have to rearrange them from the old rear wheel, putting on it those from the hardware.
5. Knitting needles. It is better to take with a margin, if during the ride your spoke breaks. It is very important to calculate the length of the spokes, the size of which depends on the properties of the rim (parameter ERD or Effective Rim Diameter) and on the size of the hub. There are a lot of knitting needle size calculators on the Internet, I recommend using 3-4 of the search results to see the average value.
6. Nipples for spokes. Usually sold separately from knitting needles and in different lengths. Take the ones that are shorter: you can afford a couple of millimeters of overshoot in calculating the length of the spokes in the big direction and the nipples will weld without problems.
7. Rim tape.
Here’s what I got. The wheel fits perfectly into the dimensions of the frame.
Now about the impressions. During the ride on my bike, I grew so close to it that I did not notice any discomfort or inconvenience from the new and really narrow rubber, I did not experience it and immediately drove off as in the old way. Of course, all the curbs and bumps have now become serious obstacles, but the soft fork makes your life much easier by forgiving the attack of such things even at high speeds. The speed really picks up more easily and is maintained higher, and the bike rolls further by inertia. Well, the aesthetics itself, of course, is priceless.
Now, if I am going to conquer the forests and fields of the Leningrad region, or I know that road conditions will be very unstable, then ordinary “evil” ones will replace the road wheels. And for driving on city asphalt or traveling to Finland, of course, only highways.
Bicycles of this type are also called city bikes. Outwardly, they are somewhat reminiscent of the old Soviet models “Kama” and “Salyut”, they do not differ in an abundance of technical elements, but at the same time they are designed for user convenience when moving in the conditions of the streets of megalopolises.
- a wide range of models and the ability to purchase a bike specifically for your needs and riding style;
- graceful appearance (artsy curved frames, an abundance of classic details, the use of bright or pastel colors in the design);
- models cannot do without fenders, trunks, rear-view mirrors, headlights, chain protectors, baskets (some of these elements are not always present);
- the most comfortable fit (city bicycles are designed for slow riding, traveling on them is not an exhausting sport, but a pleasant rest);
- they have the ability to adjust not only the height of the seat, but even the height and tilt of the steering wheel. everything so that the user’s back is relaxed;
- you can ride such a bike in any outfit, be it classic trousers, a dress or a tracksuit;
- “Bald rubber” behaves well on asphalt pavement, saving human effort.
[attention type = yellow] Tip. For those who are going to drive around the city, there is no point in overpaying for a reinforced braking system and shock absorbers, since a flat paved road does not require an emergency reduction in speed or constant maneuvering between hills and hollows. If you are not going to leave the city limits, then a mountain bike will not only be useless for you, but also harmful in some way. [/ Attention]
Features of the
Have you already planned a route on which you will ride regularly, do you know the terrain and road conditions well? Do you need a bike for unscheduled walks outside the city or trips to forest parks? Choose the right model, depending on its features and your needs. Consider the main characteristics inherent in mountain and city bikes.
The main differences between city bikes and mountain bikes
There are fundamental differences in the design of mountain and city bikes. In every situation, they can play both in favor of the cyclist and hinder comfortable and safe movement. Let’s name the main differences between the two considered varieties from each other.
- a reinforced frame, usually in the shape of a triangle with additional stiffening axes;
- obligatory presence of shock absorbers (at least in front);
- reinforced rims and tires;
- multi-stage speed switching (the presence of reduced speeds to overcome large descents and ascents, travel along difficult routes with a constant elevation difference);
- the handlebar is located slightly in front so that the cyclist with a backpack does not feel discomfort;
- always the presence of a deep tread, wide tires, double or triple rims;
- vehicle weight about 12-15 kg.
Bicycles, which are quite simple in design, are distinguished by the following design features:
- the presence of a steering wheel of increased maneuverability, which would allow you to quickly change the position of the bike at a pedestrian crossing, on the road or in a parking lot;
- maximum protection of the user from dust and dirt (fenders, chain protection);
- primitive braking system (sometimes. conventional foot brakes);
- the presence of trunks, baskets, armchairs for children (or the ability to install these elements);
- low damping capacity (often a rigid fork, damping is carried out mainly due to the springs under the saddle);
- the presence of multi-speed bushings for speed control;
- minimum tread depth, shallow pattern;
- weight reaches 20 kg.
Also known as mountain bike, mountain bike, MTB (abbreviated name derived from the English term).
Their design is specially designed to take into account the increased loads that the bike will take on when driving aggressively on uneven roads. So that the user can easily drive through mud, puddles, soft forest grass, not get stuck in a rut or easily jump on a bump or hill, MTVs are equipped with a front and (or) rear shock absorber, disc and hydraulic brakes.
Among the features of mountain bikes are:
Fat bike and MTB cross-country ability.
A mountain bike, clad in special rubber for mud, cannot travel on all roads. In those places where he is hopelessly stuck, the fat bike will feel great.
The main secret of this miracle all-terrain vehicle is not wide tires, but low pressure inside them. Do not be afraid that the wheel will puncture. This will not happen, thanks to the powerful tires. They come in sizes up to 5.5 inches and rim widths up to 10 cm.
Fat bike wheel sizes are the same diameter as mountain bikes: 26 “, 27.5” and 29 “. But when choosing between a fat bike and a mountain bike, you need to consider the cost of tires. There is a clear minus for the fat bike. There are no cheap bicycles with wide wheels. Their cost is equal to that of automobiles and not even the most budgetary ones.
Due to this structural feature, the pressure in the wheels can be reduced from 2 to 0.5 atmospheres. The weight of such a wheel reaches 3 kg. But many manufacturers have found a way out of this situation. Many holes are drilled in the rim to lighten the weight.
Choosing a bike for passing difficult sections of the path, in cross-country ability, a fat bike surpasses a mountain bike.
Considering the general characteristics, one can distinguish:
A little history of the origin of the fat bike.
In 1932, an American magazine published an article and a picture of a bike with oversized tires. People did not believe it, they considered this information a joke.
Almost 50 years later, American Mark Grunwald brought this idea to life. He created a bicycle with wide tires for riding in snowy Alaska. An amazing model of a bicycle was named by S. Brown the most worthy invention of the century.
Bikes are very popular in the American continent and in Europe. They are used by young people and elderly people in winter and summer.
On the street, bicycles on thick tires are increasingly common. Everyone is curious about the question. which is better than a fat bike or a mountain bike. What to choose?
The name fat bike consists of two English words. “Fat” is fat, “bike” is a bicycle. That is, this is a model with thick wheels, which are significantly larger than that of a mountain bike.
Looking at the design of this model, it can be assumed that this bike is an SUV. This is indeed the case. Thick tires help overcome impassable mud and snow-covered trails.
It will easily ride on sand and plowed fields, snow and off-road.
There is a shock absorber in front of the fat bike, although this is not necessary at all. His travel is very soft, even with a rigid fork. The most expensive bike with an air shock does not match this model.
Indescribable comfort while driving is the indisputable advantage of this SUV. This is especially felt on roads covered with gravel, small bumps. Where the mountain bike starts to vibrate, the fat bike runs smoothly and without problems. But a high-quality, shock-absorbing fork, will smooth out all the bumps and on the MTB bike.
An off-road bike has a smoother ride and a more comfortable ride. But steep ascents uphill on a fat bike will be more difficult. Spinning such wheels will not be so easy than on an MTB bike.
Fat bike or mountain bike. What to choose?
What is a fat bike, how it differs from a mountain bike?
Do you want an off-road bike?
The advantage of the fat bike is its stylish look. You won’t be able to drive a fat bike down a city street unnoticed.
Modern mountain bikes do not stand out for their large wheels, but the color of all models is two, three and four-color, attracting the eyes of passers-by and those who look at the world from the car window.
Convenience and speed.
There is a feeling that it is difficult to ride such a bike. This is not true! The fat bike is stable and very reliable. Riding it practically does not differ from a mountain bike. The only caveat is that it will be quite difficult to accelerate above 30 km / h.
For fast riding, it is better to choose a mountain bike, it surpasses a fat bike in maneuverability and speed. If you prefer an extreme kind of riding. MTB will allow you to perform a number of tricks.
Manufacturers have also solved the speed problem. An electric model of a fat bike appeared. This is the same SUV, only equipped with a motor. The battery is located in the trunk or hangs from the frame, instead of a canteen.
If the battery runs out, the electric fat bike will turn into a regular bike. This model has an obvious advantage, because it can reach high speeds. If you use the battery energy not constantly, but if necessary, then its charge will be enough for more than 100 km.
What to choose a fat bike or a mountain bike is up to you. We will summarize and list all the criteria by which you will be guided when choosing:
- Cross-country ability is a clear plus for a fat bike.
- Agility and speed. the MTB bike is the undisputed superiority.
- Comfort. due to the large, wide wheel. leader, fat bike.
- Service. for mountain bikes, you can choose a tire for every and wallet. A fat bike is not a cheap pleasure when replacing bike tires. Fat bike. minus.
- Riding downhill. mountain bike will make it easier to pedal up the road.
- Weight. minus SUV.
- Appearance. here the fat bike cannot be surpassed. a clear leader.
Make your choice, weigh all the advantages and disadvantages, and quickly join the cycling culture. Regardless of which option you prefer, it will bring great pleasure to you and benefit to your health.
How a mountain bike differs from city and other types?
Mountain biking is the dream of most young and adult fans of extreme riding. This category of two-wheeled vehicles is rightfully considered off-road. it does not depend on the quality of the surface and is able to overcome even narrow paths and gorges. Of course, not every mountain bike owner has to ride the canyons, but the very opportunity not to think about obstacles can inspire even the most inexperienced extreme lovers to feats.
What are the differences from road bicycles for this popular transport today? Is it worth comparing it with sports models? Is there a big difference between road bikes and regular bikes? In fact, mountain bike does not belong to highly specialized categories of transport, but it cannot be called a universal solution either. Such a bike copes better than others with riding on rough terrain, suitable for mastering some sports disciplines. But in order to understand how it differs from others, it is worth comparing different types of two-wheeled vehicles with each other.
General characteristics of a mountain bike
Mountain bike or simply MTB is a well-known mountain bike, designed specifically for off-road travel. These models traditionally have:
- wider tires, thicker, with clearly and deeply pronounced toes;
- chain transmission with speed switch;
- the steering block brought forward;
- trapezoidal frame;
- shock absorber for vibration dampening;
- rear suspension (optional);
- raised carriage.
A standard mountain bike for sports use is equipped with attachments and can be both light. from 6 kg, and quite heavy, the maximum curb weight reaches 19 kg. Common wheel diameters for this class are 24, 26, 27.5 and 29 inches. Since 1990, mountain bikes have gained international recognition and are used in sports. The modern classification of these vehicles includes such models.
- Freeride. Free riding on a track with obstacles requires the use of full-suspension bicycles with powerful braking system.
- Bicycle trial. Discipline involves overcoming obstacles by the cyclist. The main task is not to lean any part of the body on the ground or other objects. All natural and artificial obstacles are passed by the rider in the bike saddle.
- Downhill. Downhill for a while on the track with sharp turns, unexpected traps in the form of cliffs and jumps, natural obstacles is carried out on the heaviest bicycles in the mountain class. The standard wheel diameter in this discipline is 27.5.
- Cross country. The discipline where the lightest mountain bikes are used. There is a classic format of a race in a circle with a changing type of terrain, a marathon and an eliminator. a survival race.
In addition, there are slopestyle jump bikes, reinforced for bikercross and many other options.But for most mountain bikers, mountain bikes are primarily a means of free movement, allowing you to feel confident and comfortable in any environment.
The hybrid bike combines the properties of road and mountain types and allows you to find a compromise between comfortable movement on a flat road and overcoming off-road. Visually, it is closer to mountain bikes, the material is carbon, steel or aluminum, but the travel of such models is softer and lighter. The wheels on the hybrids are large. 28 ″, the tires are thinner and narrower, the tread pattern is smoothed, closer to the road.
The hybrids are equipped with a fork shock absorber and use a mountain bike handlebar. It seems that in such a combination all possible disadvantages have been eliminated. But in practice, there are problems, and they are quite obvious. This technique implies a higher seating position, which, in combination with the mountain handlebar, creates some discomfort and increases the load on the arms.
In addition, hybrid bikes clearly lack the strength and rigidity of a mountain bike’s structure. they are not suitable for extreme rides and quickly fail with intensive off-road use.
A classic road bike. the most common, walking or touring bike noticeably loses to a mountain bike both in the choice of speed and in cross-country ability. But in such models, the gender difference is clearly visible. women do not have a transverse tube that increases rigidity, they are often made in a folding version. City bikes are equipped with a vertical saddle that is tall, wide and supplemented with a spring block for support. The steering wheel in such models has an inclination towards the rider’s body, it is located high and does not require changing the position of the rider while driving.
In fact, road bicycles are created exclusively for leisurely riding at your own pleasure. you will not be able to develop significant speed with their help, and the absence of shock absorbers (they are rarely used) will significantly complicate any exit outside the asphalt path.
But urban two-wheeled models are adapted for use in everyday clothes. their design takes into account all important nuances and eliminates problems with wardrobe items getting stuck inside the chain.
The complete set of city bikes is also quite noticeably different from mountain bikes. They initially include fenders, full-size, anti-splashing mud, trunk, reflectors and headlights. Riding in mud on a mountain bike without wings will definitely not be fun, but it will allow you to overcome obstacles. The urban model will get bogged down on the approach to the obstacle.
Comparing sports and mountain bikes is not very appropriate. simply because their goals are too different. In the Sport class models, the Accent is focused on speed performance and ergonomics to reduce energy loss while driving. They do not use shock-absorbing suspensions. they “dampen” part of the effort transmitted by the athlete during pedaling. Accordingly, any irregularities on the road strongly affect the rider’s well-being and the condition of the equipment itself.
The class of the sports bike also matters. For example, the design of racing models is simplified as much as possible. the rear wheel has a solid disc design, a short frame maximally lightens the weight of the equipment itself. The saddle in these sports bikes is located above the handlebars, which helps to maintain optimal aerodynamics while traveling. Brakes are often absent or are represented by the simplest “tick” in the front, the gearshift system is also absent.
In fact, sports bikes are only good on the highway or track, outside of their environment they are practically useless.
The main differences
How is a mountain bike different from other types? In most cases, it will not be difficult to feel the difference. it is in the position of the rider’s body, the intensity of the load on his shoulders and arms.
Comparing models of different types will help to assess these differences more fully and accurately.
From the highway
This type of bicycle can be classified as a sports bike. there are races in the discipline, and in general it is quite popular. Road models are fast, but show their best qualities exclusively on flat surfaces. In off-road conditions, they are almost impossible to use due to the lack of the necessary equipment.
Among the common features with a mountain bike in a road bike, one can single out only the material for the frame. it can be carbon or aluminum, but steel options are also found.
Another obvious difference is the shape of the steering wheel, which at first glance demonstrates a sporty character. It is steeply curved and allows the athlete to keep the body almost horizontal during movement, leaning strongly forward. The saddle is also different. here it is longer and narrower, it allows you not to rub the inner thighs even with prolonged contact. The mountain bike’s handlebars are wide and almost straight, positioned above the seat for optimal balance in both the seated position and while standing on the pedals.
The road fork is always rigid. Mountain bikes are equipped with shock absorbers, but there are also options similar to sports. Rigid fork does not fit all models.
Today, almost all hardtails already have elements that cushion shock loads, and in double suspensions they are even double and are divided into types.
Features of bicycles
If earlier there were only two categories of the types of bicycles: sports and road (if we do not take into account children’s and adolescent types), now the list has increased:
- sports road.
All of these categories are made taking into account individual abilities, therefore they are divided into men, women, children and adolescents. The design takes into account weight, physical activity and other technical characteristics. Now you can dwell in more detail on the two most popular categories of bicycles. mountain and city.
How is a mountain bike different from a city bike??
Not motorcycles, not motor vehicles will never destroy the popularity of bicycles among people. This type of transport is developing more and more and now it is no longer the simplest of mechanisms for movement over short distances, but something that is improving every day.
Those who used to be suspicious of a bicycle as a transport, after the purchase, strive to make up for lost time: routes are looked for, equipment is selected, even the desire to find companions in hobby is understandable. The most difficult question remains which type of bike to choose for yourself.
Features of mountain bikes
Extreme operating conditions require increased strength from the mechanics and other elements of the mountain bike, and this is all taken into account when choosing the right type of bike. What is the peculiarity of the technical characteristics of mountain bikes:
- The frame and fork are equipped with shock absorbers, the stiffness of which is stipulated by the bike category.
- Reinforced frame option.
- Use on some types of rear suspension.
- Reinforced rims and other wheel elements, including tires.
- The carriage is located almost flush with the bushings.
- Whiter than high strength of elements that provide not only a change in speed of movement, but also the force of a mechanical transmission. Particular attention is paid to the mechanics, ensuring safe (shock absorbers, springs) ascent and descent in areas with more than a critical angle of inclination.
- The presence of several reduced speeds. This condition allows you to overcome ascents of significant steepness of elevations and for movement on routes that are especially difficult to pass.
- The location of the steering wheel, in relation to the rack, with a slightly forward extension, for convenience when moving with a shoulder load.
Modern modifications are replacing the mechanics and devices that were previously used for braking with newer technologies. Instead of rim pads, where, as a transfer of force, the muscles of the hand to the cable, they were forced to brake by pressing the segments, they were replaced with newer equipment. disc brakes, where brake fluid pumped into the system is used. To reduce the total weight in the construction of the frame, a particularly durable, but not heavy material is used: titanium, polymers, aluminum alloys, carbon.
The mountain bike was specially designed for those off-road sections that are not always easy to overcome on foot. Where a road bike could not be used as a transport, and it hindered rather than helped in movement, mechanics modified by engineering thought made it possible to overcome the most serious obstacles.
An important factor is the physical endurance and training of the cyclist, but practice is a profitable business, if the decision is made to purchase an off-road miracle on two wheels, the mountain type of bike is the very thing that is required.
Features of city bikes
- Wider but more efficient steering wheel for enhanced maneuvering ability.
- Installation of special shields to ensure traffic safety and protection from dust and dirt on clothing. There are differences in categories for women and men.
- Larger wheel diameter with medium-width tire and tread for traction and higher speed. For movement on asphalt, treads with a small pattern are used.
- Braking control is often limited to only the rear foot brakes.
- The presence of small trunks and special chairs for transporting children.
- Damping due to the design of the springs that are in the saddle.
- Using multi-speed bushings to change speeds.
- Higher fit frame.
- Chain protection.
- Availability of rear-view mirrors, signal reflectors and devices for giving sound signals.
The main differences
Now that the technical specifications of both categories of bikes are provided, it is possible to understand what the difference is, and how it can be used when choosing a purchase.
- Mountain bikes are heavier in weight, if city bicycles are easy to carry in the hands in the event of obstacles, then in the case of SUVs this is not the best way out.
- The cross-country passability of mountain sports bikes is an order of magnitude higher than that of urban counterparts, but on good road surface they are inferior in speed and maneuverability.
- Both categories are easily modified with commercially available accessories ranging from mechanical devices to frames, pedals, brakes.
- Wider tires work well off-road, but on asphalt they create a noticeable vibration and increased resistance, so city bikes are preferable in this case.
- City bicycles provide for collapsible frames on some models, which is very convenient for storing them in city apartments, this can hardly be called a significant plus, since over time the connections acquire unnecessary development and backlash, which affects the ride. These bikes are good for short and easy distances.
If mountain bikes are more reliable in operation: they are durable, it is more difficult to “kill” them by mechanical loads and if they can be used for a rather long period without serious breakdowns, then the price for them is much higher. When choosing the right bike, it is important to take into account the estimated distances and loads, how this can affect the operation, and only then decide on the purchase.

How a mountain bike differs from a road bike
Choosing a bike is not an easy task, especially in the realities of today’s market and high competition. Depending on the conditions in which the bike will be used and for what purposes it is purchased, the appropriate type is determined. So, for rough terrain and off-road terrain, a mountain bike is suitable, and for driving on city flat asphalt. a road bike. But what is the difference between a city bike and a mountain bike? In this article, we provide a detailed analysis of each of the types.
Mountain or city bike: what’s the difference?
Mountain bikes are designed for off-road driving. It is the specific nature of the operation that determines the fact that the frames of such bikes are made of high-strength materials, because it is quite difficult to withstand the test with bumps and pits. Most models are equipped with a wide handlebar that allows you to maintain control of the bike while driving, as well as a front shock absorber that dampens vibration.
Road bikes have design features that make them ideal for riding on smooth paved paths at high speeds. Due to the low position of the handlebars and the specific design of the frame, the cyclist takes a “hunched over” position when riding, but it is this position that provides fast speed.
Another difference between a mountain bike and a city bike is the weight of each of the designs. So, the lightness of the components of the “road builder” is due to the need for a quick set of speed.
Mountain bikes, in view of their unsuitability for fast trips, have a significant weight, which allows you to ensure the integrity of the structure during aggressive skiing from the mountains or off-road, as well as prevent frame deformation during falls.
Due to the fact that road bicycles are designed for riding on a flat road and are not intended for riding on potholes and bumps, it makes no sense to introduce a movable suspension into their design.
The design of mountain bikes is characterized by the presence of shock absorbers (or one shock absorber. front), the implementation of which is due to the purpose of the bike.
“Gorniki”, as a rule, are equipped with wide tires with a deep pattern, which are designed to increase the area of contact of the wheel with the ground and the friction force, thereby increasing the cross-country ability and stability of the bike.
On the other hand, road bikes are equipped with a narrow tire with a shallow tread, because the interaction of rubber and smooth asphalt creates a sufficient coefficient of friction to ensure a confident and comfortable ride.
Having decided on the conditions in which your future bike will be used and knowing how a mountain bike differs from a regular (road) bike, you will not be mistaken with the choice of two-wheeled transport.
In our salon there are mountain and road bicycles before you decide to choose a bike, we recommend using the bicycle rental service in Minsk.
Frame and steering wheel
The first thing to look for when buying is the frame and handlebars. The frame of the city bike is long and usually steel, stronger than aluminum, but can be heavier. It also comes in two types: open and closed. The latter differs in that a pipe is welded between the saddle and the handlebars. It is usually easier for girls to climb onto the bike if the frame is open.
The steering wheel of the city bike is high, and the fork is curved at the bottom and also elongated. This softens the impact of the front wheel on uneven city roads.
City bike wheels must not exceed 28 inches (71 centimeters), no explicit tread pattern required. The saddle should be soft, not always wide.
Speed is a matter of taste. You can find city bikes with 18, 21 and even 26-speed systems. This is really a matter of taste for the cyclist. Usually 7 speeds are enough. Some are 12, and some even one.
Girls usually find it easier to climb on the bike if the frame is open.
What is the difference between a city bike and a bike for a summer residence
How to get the right and safe bike for traveling in the metropolis and what to look for when buying? And how does it differ from a bike for a summer residence?
Editor’s Note: This article is intended for the brand new in the cycling industry. Profi, you are not here (but here).
Mountain bike is not needed in the metropolis
Two types of bicycles are suitable for riding around the city: the city bike and the hybrid. We often see city bikes on the streets of the city. such bicycles are used in city rental. An open frame, a basket for things, large fenders and curved “horns” of the steering wheel are the main features of a city bike. The hybrid combines the characteristics of a city bike and a mountain bike.
Other popular types of bikes are mountain and road, and their fusion is also a hybrid. But today we are talking about a hybrid by a friend.
- The mountain one is needed for off-road, and the highway one. for a fast long drive on highways over long distances, their design is designed for a long load, which is not necessary at all for driving along the streets of a metropolis.
Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes Maria Ciccone-Leon. On a city bike
Since the city bike is heavier, it will be harder to overclock it. And yes: if you live in a house without an elevator, then lowering your bike and picking it up every day will be exhausting. Therefore, when choosing, you must take into account the weight of the bike.
However, light bicycles are much more likely to deform in falls or accidents. Normal weight for a safe city bike is 15-17 kg, for a hybrid 10-13 kg.
Have strong hands that will carry your bike straight to your apartment
For those who like to ride both in the city and in the country, a hybrid is ideal. The hybrids got the shock absorbers, handlebars and brakes from mountain bikes, while the tires, saddle and speeds from the city bike. That is, a person can ride such a bike on rural roads, but it is dangerous to ride in the mountains and off-road.
The most noticeable difference is the brakes. On a city bike, a person slows down by moving their feet back, and on a hybrid, the brake cables and levers are located on the handlebars. Plus, of course, the city bike weighs 5-7 kilograms more. By the way, about the weight.
When choosing a bike, take into account its weight. so that you can lift it to your apartment
We also recommend that you hang a small bag on the saddle or frame, and put a good multitool (hex keys), a spare chamber and a small pump in there. This small kit will help in the event of an unexpected breakdown of your two-wheeled friend.
Spatulas, patches, glue. must have, which should always be in your glove compartment

The most direct difference between a city bike and a mountain bike is the wheels. Mountain bike wheels range from 26 to 29 inches and are always fitted with protruding tires. These tread blocks act as teeth on loose ground and provide traction where smooth road bike tires will slide.
Road bikes use narrower tires without large tread blocks to provide sufficient grip and handling on asphalt.
Mountain bikes are designed for off-road conquest. mud, slush, snow, gravel. These bicycles are very sturdy, with thick tires and sturdy wheels to resist damage and shock. Frames are made of aluminum, carbon, steel and titanium to withstand heavy loads.
The suspension system allows the wheels to absorb shock and vibration on rough roads. The mountain hardtail bike is equipped with front wheel suspension, while the full suspension bike has shock absorption on both wheels.
Mountain bikes usually have flat handlebars that bring the rider into an upright position for balance and control on the road.
What makes a mountain bike different from a road bike??
Mountain bikes have superior grip and cushioning where road bikes can’t handle the road.
Probably, each type of terrain has its own specially designed bike. Paved roads and country roads have very different surface characteristics that require specialized bicycles.
The paved road bike has over a century of racing heritage and is the forerunner of all bicycles. The mountain bike was invented much later, but it occupies an important niche in all cycling and has a wide variety of styles and designs for tackling difficult terrain.
Designed for speed
The road bike is lightweight and easy to handle on a flat road. These bikes have 700c thin wheels and thin tires that reduce rolling resistance and increase speed. Racing road bikes are used in competition and are designed to cover the distance quickly and in the shortest time.
On a road bike, the rider adopts an aggressive, forward-leaning position, which improves aerodynamics and pedaling force.
The frame needs to be lightweight and stiff, so extra strong materials such as carbon fiber and titanium are commonly used for its construction from various manufacturers. Other durable and lightweight materials such as steel and aluminum have been removed from the market.
Choosing a bike
The characteristics that make mountain bikes very comfortable off-road are also suitable for riding on flat roads and bike paths, making them popular with ordinary users. It will never go as fast as a road bike, but the rider’s position and good shock absorption work well on potholes and curbs.
Road bikes are the perfect choice if you only ride on tarmac and want a fast bike; it will be much easier to pedal and ride uphill on them. Their low weight makes them easy to handle at high speeds.
