Urban winter bicycle rubber
This type of tire is designed so as not to wear out when driving on bare asphalt. the studs and the rubber material itself are very “oak” and reliable. At the same time, the tread is smoother, not intended for off-road driving.
First of all, this is Schwalbe Marathon Winter, again, I have personal experience. remember, I wrote above that I was very disappointed with the two-row stud, and so, I changed it to the Winter Marathon. the result is wonderful.
Ditch the Chain, a New Type of Bicycle Is Here
In a word, the Winter Marathon is a worthy pair for a summer.
From someone else’s experience, I can praise the NoKian W240, this model is also designed for city riding, in Finland it can be said to be a cult among all-season cyclists.
There is also a variant of a winter tire, not studded, but with a sticky tread. for example, Continental TopContact Winter II. Such rubber is intended for regions where snow is rare, but ice occurs. Due to the nature of the tread, the tire seems to stick to fresh, even ice.
In our area, it is unlikely to find application, but in the UK, Holland, Belgium and other countries with mild winters, TopContact Winter is very much loved and used as a universal tire for the off-season.
How to choose a studded bicycle rubber
Narrow or wide
There is such a dependence: the narrower the tire, the better it rides on the snow slurry. it simply cuts through it to a dense layer. There is nothing more good to expect from narrow winter tires.
In all other conditions, wider tires will have the advantage. more contact area and more studs interact with the road. It is especially good to ride in winter on a lowered spike, rolls well and grips remarkably. If you’re interested, read about the ambiguous conclusion about the relationship between roll-up and pressure in my article.
Note: Some lightweight winter bike tires, such as the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro, have a soft sidewall and should not be ridden at a pressure lower than the manufacturer’s minimum pressure level. There are many cases when the rubber cracked or even torn for this reason.
Maybe put a spike on the front only?
This option is quite logical, but not at all for reasons of economy, but for a roll. Many cyclists do this: while winter has not yet come into its own, but frosts are already regular and the chances of running into the ice are not zero, they first put on a winter tire only in front.
At the same time, rolling is almost not affected, because the front wheel makes the least contribution to rolling resistance, but you will have insurance that, once on a slippery road, the bike will not rip off in an instant.
Rear wheel skid does not develop as rapidly and can be controlled to some extent. But when regular snowfalls begin, the stud must be put on both wheels.
Universal tires, for city and off-road
The Schwalbe Ice Spiker, a simple and reliable tire, is the best option for a simple winter skater. I spent several winters (although not completely) leaving this wonderful rubber, after which I sold it to my teammate, I believe that he uses it this season too.
There are more advanced versions of this model, with the Pro index. they are less lighter, softer, but more expensive.
NoKian Extreme 294, before the expansion of Schwalbe, a very popular tire, practical and reliable, but in my opinion worse than the Ice Spiker.
The same is with the lightweight version of NoKian WXC300, I would choose Ice Spiker Pro, they are at least cheaper and roll better.
The Kenda Klondike XT is a relatively inexpensive winter tire, but heavy and with poor roll-off. Has the right to life for an unpretentious Catalan who decided to try not to close the season.
What is the best winter tire for a bicycle?
Almost every tire manufacturer has studded tires in its lineup, but as they say, with all the wealth of choice, there are not very many options.
Should I buy a double-row studded bicycle rubber
Some people who like to save money buy two-row winter tires, but in my opinion, this is a rather pointless waste of money. I myself rolled one winter on the Continental two-row 28 ″ for a hybrid, and to be honest, I experienced more than one unpleasant moment.
In a two-row tire, the spikes are installed along the edges of the tread, and the treadmill has only rubber hooks. In theory, it looks like this: the bike rolls along the cleared cycle path, and if it meets an area with ice and drives, then the spikes on the sides will come into play and the movement will stabilize.
In reality, everything is somewhat different. as soon as you get on a slippery road, the bike starts to jerk, then the rear slips, then the front, the side spikes cling, after which the tire again hits the ice with bare rubber, and so many times.
Belts Are The BEST Bicycle Drivetrain Available (Epic Testing!)
As a result, the ride turns out to be very nervous, you always expect a trick from the bike, besides, with straight-line braking on a two-row, everything is very bad.
This type of tire is designed for climates where ice on the road is a rather rare situation and the side studs have a belay function. I do not recommend it for our latitudes, despite the fact that the price for such tires is relatively low.
The main cons of studded bicycle tires:
As for the price. here you have to think in this way: firstly, it is security, which cannot cost too much. Secondly, this is an investment of money for a very long time, because the mileage in winter is usually small, and provided that the tires are used correctly, they will last for many years. Divide the price by at least five years, and you will see that the amount is not that large.
The increased weight is a price to pay for the “fleshy” tread and metal spikes, you can’t get away from this. Even lightweight versions of the studded bicycle tire weigh 700-900 grams per side, depending on the diameter of the tire.
In general, winter cycling is always masochism, so the extra pound on wheels fits into the concept. Just kidding, in fact, given the fact that in winter the pace and speed of movement is lower than in summer, this excess weight does not have much effect.
The situation is worse with coasting, especially on flat surfaces. Even the best winter tires roll significantly worse than mediocre summer tires, which is not surprising. several hundred studs on the tread do not add to the rolling wheel.
But not everything is so scary, because in winter you have to ride in different conditions: snow, ice, ice, snow porridge, and often. all together. In general, I remember when I bought my first spike, I was surprised that it does not roll as badly as it was scared.
In the case of winter, when weeks of frost with snow are replaced by weeks of thaw with rain, and you have to roll on bare asphalt on thorns, the wear of winter tires does take place. Rearranging tires for every change of weather is not an option.
Many people have a separate wheelset with summer tires installed, changing wheels is much faster than bead tires. This is also a hassle, but who said that a winter cyclist should not suffer.
Reviews BFGoodrich Urban Terrain T / A
for 4 years without removing and 80,000 km erased by almost 70%. On one rear wheel, a roll got out on the tread. When entering a turn in the heat on dry asphalt, they creak, erasing the edges. When aquaplaning, swim like on skis.
215 / 65R16 Tiguan.
Many people write no aquaplaning.
This is not the case; in the rain, in the presence of a track, the rubber begins to float at a speed of over 90 km / h. one to one like MICHELIN LATITUDE CROSS. Even the drawing is similar.
Tires are marked “Inside”, ie. with this inscription put on the wheel inside.
Tire stiffer than General Tire Grabber UHP but softer than Continental ContiPremiumContact 5.
5 balancers were hung on one wheel, which is a bit too much, but like this. It took less for other balancer wheels.
Inflated at 2.5 bar / tire, when warming up in summer it reaches 2.7 bar., When starting from standstill 2.3 bar / tire.
Wet asphalt (summer 20, spring 5):
– rides like a glove, there is no demolition;
– when there is a downpour and there is a layer of water on the asphalt, the tire does not float out of the water, but it slows down a lot.
Asphalt on village roads, covered with snow, uncleaned for 3 days (winter. 7):
Turns (Fall 5):
– turns 40 degrees. from 30 km / h. up to 92 km / h passes steadily, but at 92 km / h, because I have a profile of 65, I already need to go more carefully and only on the road without potholes.
– predictable at speeds up to 120 km / h.
The first photo is new, then after a run of 10262 km (after a year).
Possible increase in consumption by 0.5L.
Non-directional, there is an inside and outside.
There is an MS icon and a triangle 2/3 Sun.1/3 Snowflake.
In the summer we will try, shod on the action.Free! and hid.
Add, Oct 2018.Drove 11000 km on it: highway. mountains, fields, sea, stones, etc. No problems identified, I recommend!
