How to install
When securing the derailer on the frame, do not rush to tighten the clamp of its fastening. First, in the case of a thin-walled butted frame, overtightening will cause the seat tube to buckle. Secondly, the crossover has not yet been set relative to the stars.
Putting it right means fulfilling two requirements:
- The frame must be parallel to the stars.
- There should be a gap of about 2 mm between the teeth of the largest chainring and the frame structure, but not more than 3 mm.
Now tighten the clamp to a reasonable torque and install the chain.

In practice, setting up gear shifting is very simple.
How to set up a Shimano front derailleur on a mountain bike
Statistics say that the front “shifter” requires less maintenance than the rear one. Simplicity of design is also on the “front” side. Why, then, there are a lot of questions when installing and setting up this unit. What is the capriciousness of the front crossover? And in the end, how to do the work so that the result does not cause discontent and criticism.

Correct installation of the front derailleur
You can start the front derailleur setting only after adjusting the rear derailleur. Installation is the initial step in adjusting the speed switch. It’s very important to do it right.

- The next step is to adjust the location of the front derailleur. On the frame, it should be located along the pipe under the saddle.
- Set the angle of rotation parallel to the drive sprocket on the front cassette of the transmission unit.
- Next, you need to adjust the gap between the underside of the derailleur frame and the top line of the teeth of the large gear. The gap should be minimal.
- Adjust the cable tension.
- Place the chain close to the inside of the frame.
It is also worth paying attention to setting up the chain. The bicycle chain is a very important element, with the help of which the impulse is transmitted from one chain to another and the adjustment process takes place. The technical condition of the circuit is of great importance for the operation of the entire system. If, for some reason, the bicycle chain stretches or deforms, this cannot but adversely affect the operation of the entire transmission unit. To prevent this from happening, the chain must be periodically removed and cleaned, and then set to the correct position. There are lock and lockless models of bicycle chains. They differ in the way they are connected. To remove the locking chain, it is enough to find the link with the lock and disconnect it with a screwdriver. The lockless bicycle chain is disconnected using a squeeze. This tool helps to push the link axle out and make the connector. If it skews for some reason, this can adversely affect the gearshift process.

The gear selector is an important part of a multi-speed bike. Thanks to this component, it becomes possible to move in extreme conditions, which include movement against the wind, ascents, poor road quality. The transmission unit must cope with all these problems. The quality of the ride and the safety of the cyclist depend on the smooth operation of the speed switch. This skill is very useful, and every bike owner should learn how to independently adjust the gear shifter. Each cyclist can make adjustments to the bike’s gear shifters on their own. You need to study the theory in detail by reading the instructions, or using the advice of experienced bike owners.
Before setting the derailleur, the rear derailleur must be adjusted. Placing the bike in the correct position (wheels up) will greatly facilitate the entire adjustment process. So, all the necessary details will be in sight, and it will be much easier to get to them.
Reasons for poor gear shifting:
- physical defects of the switch parts;
- contamination of parts. To prevent this from happening, the components of the transmission unit must be periodically cleaned of dirt, dust and old grease;

How to properly adjust the rear derailleur
To independently adjust the rear derailleur on a bicycle, you just need to strictly follow the step-by-step instructions from experts in this process. So, follow all the steps:
- Move the chain to the small sprocket with the right shifter.
- Unscrew the fixing screw and release the cable.
- Find the screw marked “H”. Use a screwdriver to adjust this screw so that the smallest star lies in the same plane with the rollers, which are located in the foot (frame).
- Pull the cable by hand and fix it with the screw.
- Check the operation of the switch, and if it does not work correctly, the chain does not switch well to large stars, then you need to tighten the cable more (either with the help of a drum or with a switch).
- Move the chain to the largest sprocket available in the cassette.
- Find the screw marked “L” and adjust it so that the tab (frame) and the sprocket are in the same plane. in this case, the cross-over will not be able to get into the spokes of the front wheel.

Continuing a series of articles about a bicycle (about a bicycle), I want to talk about setting up the rear derailleur of a bicycle.

We unscrew the grandmother, which regulates the tension of the cable, to the middle position. The point is that we can make fine adjustments in the future: pull or loosen the cable.
Let’s get started with the adjustment. At the moment, the rear derailleur is not being pulled by the cable, so the spring tends to move it towards the small sprocket. This stroke is limited by the adjusting screw H (from the word High, we are talking about high gear), so we will adjust it. By screwing in the screw, we move the switch closer to the wheel, unscrewing it. we allow the switch to move further away from the wheel. We are looking for a position in which the chain will be directed exactly to the sprocket. We crank the pedals, checking that the chain goes exactly along the sprocket, without bouncing on high teeth.
Now you need to put the cable back in place. We check that the cable does not get caught anywhere, so that the shirt does not fall out of the mount anywhere. This check is very important, give it due consideration. We hold (without much effort) the cable with pliers and tighten the mount. If the switch slightly moved towards the wheel, it’s okay (it’s better to make sure that the cable is not slack), because there is an adjusting grandmother. If necessary, we adjust the setting by the grandmother.
We switch to low gear, i.e. to the biggest star (I will say again that we do this on the back cassette).
The next task is to adjust the screw L (Low. low gear), find such a position of the switch in which the chain runs smoothly along the sprocket. I advise you to move the derailleur as close to the next gear as possible, but so that the chain does not start jumping on high teeth.
Now let’s adjust the tension of the roller. The action is trivial on cheap switches (I took this one as an example), but theory is theory, and the application of the smallest aspects of theory in practice is the key to a high-quality switch setting
So, switch back to the largest star, in front to the smallest; we put the bike on wheels (if it was “on horns”). In this position, the tensioner roller is as close as possible to the cassette and can touch it on bumps or when pedaling backwards. We do not have bumps, shaking the chain with your hands while rotating the pedals. I do not advise you (you get dirty, injure your hands, and we turned the bike over), so we just pedal back. By adjusting the tensioner bolt, we ensure that the chain turns smoothly, and the roller does not touch the cassette.
I advise you to drive out and test the derailleur at different forward speeds. Do not forget about the grandmother, who can adjust the adjustment. Principle: by screwing in the grandmother, you release the switch further from the wheel; twisting. pulling closer to the wheel.
Also, do not forget that you should not expect particularly accurate and soft switching from cheap switch models.

How to adjust the rear derailleur
The rear derailleur is a machine that transfers the chain from one sprocket of the rear wheel to another. Today, the vast majority of high-speed bicycles are equipped with such a switch.
The rear derailleur consists of the following elements.
- Switch frame. The number of bike speeds depends on its length.
- Two rollers that are responsible for the direction of the chain: the guide and the tensioner roller.
- The mechanism itself (parallelogram).
- Fixing bolt.

- Top gear stop. screw marked H.
- Cable guide groove.
- Tensioner adjusting screw.
Setting the rear derailleur is necessary if the mechanism is out of order, the chain jumps over the necessary stars, the speed does not switch, a grinding or loud sounds are heard. You can configure the mechanism and debug its work yourself. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and a hex wrench.
First, make sure the derailleur is vertical and parallel to the bike. If everything is in order, you can proceed to the setup. For convenience, turn the bike upside down, placing it on the saddle and handlebars, this will give access to the switch itself and the adjustment screws.
- First, lower the chain to the smallest sprocket. Do this with the shifter on the right handlebar of the bike, it is she who is responsible for the rear derailleur.
- Loosen the screw holding the cable. This is done in order to unlock the switch.
- Prepare a screwdriver and find the screw with the Latin letter H.
- Move the switch so that the sprockets on which the chain lies (one star. on the cassette, two stars. on the switch) are in the same plane, that is, they form one line.
- Take the cable with your hand. It must be pulled out as much as possible and fixed by tightening the screw.
- Check if the switch is working properly. If it does not move well to large stars, turn the thumbs counterclockwise, pulling the cable.
- Now move the chain to the smallest star using the shifters.
- Find the screw with the Latin letter L.
- Change the position of the derailleur so that the largest sprocket in the cassette lies in the same plane with the derailleur foot, forming a straight line with it.
In my opinion, this is the first line of switches that can be used in Naturally not long-lasting and not complex, but these switches will already pull the PST on the plain.

- the final adjustment is carried out by rotating the hollow screw with a drum (position 2 in the figure), the chain should easily move from one star to another and back with one press of the shifter.
When you finish adjusting the Shimano rear derailleur on a mountain bike, tighten and secure the cable securely. It is important that it fits into the guide groove. If the work is done correctly, then when the pedals are rotated, the chain works silently and does not jump to the side.

Rooster bent or broke
If the foot of the rear derailleur is oblique, then the mount is bent. You can fix this defect yourself.
