Pedals on a speed bike

Scrolled on a high-speed large. a possible defect in the rear wheel of a bicycle, which is most often found on road models of a new model.

In order to get rid of the reasons that spoil your vehicle, you need to determine the degree of pollution and wear.

  • Remove from a large cassette.
  • Clean all chain links with a flat bristle brush.
  • With a napkin, which is moistened in kerosene, you need to wipe all washers and existing cloves.

If the pedals are cranking on a sports vehicle, you need to change parts that could be damaged: sprocket, chain, ratchet or bushing.

It is much easier to repair and replace components on a simple bicycle than on other types of vehicles. The express one needs to replace several elements of the chain, as it is more complex.

Why the bike scrolls

At the same time, it is difficult to determine the existing deviation by eye and make repairs correctly. In order to figure out how to fix the problems due to which the pedals on the bike are scrolling, it is necessary to determine the reasons.

The resulting trouble may be the result of the following possible reasons:

  • Wear has occurred, or, more simply, the rear sprocket has worn out;
  • The chain on a racing vehicle is highly deformed and stretched;
  • The rear wheel hub and its elements have become simply unusable and faulty.

All of the above problems cannot be asymptomatic, so you should carefully look at your bike and remember the following: if the wheels began to spin weakly, the free wheeling has increased, the chain in places or often slips while driving, it is necessary to carry out urgent diagnostics and find the reason for cranking the pedals to a large.

Most often, when a breakdown is detected, they begin to check the pedal mechanism itself. But this is not always correct and correct, because an error can occur directly in other parts and details of the entire mechanism guiding the movement:

The first reason for pedaling is possible on speed bikes, road bikes and bicycles with a foot brake. With long-term use of transport, the hub on a bicycle and all its components can wear out, while losing engagement with each other. The process of rotation of the wheel continues, but the links do not come into contact with each other, creating an “idle”, as a result of which a scroll is formed. The crux of the problem lies in the pedaling of the stars, but NOT the wheels.

How to remove scrolling on a bike

The first step is to completely lubricate the chain mechanism and clean out all dirt. Pay due attention to the space between the rollers, as well as the sprockets. Before starting to repair the chain, you must remove the rear wheel, because without this procedure it will NOT be possible to dismantle the transmission.

The next step is to replace the sprocket and associated chain. Replacement must be done in a comprehensive manner, otherwise all repairs will go down the drain and pedal overshoot on a regular bike will be a constant and long-term phenomenon.

How to fix this kind of breakdown? It is enough just to dismantle and remove the wheel, disassemble the hub mechanism into separate spokes, inspect and evaluate the parts of the hub, roller and cone axle for possible wear.

You can, of course, try to take the cone to a specialized workshop for grinding, but this will be a waste of time, because the wear is thus not eliminated. It is necessary to completely change parts.

How to care for your bike chain to avoid scrolling

Be that as it may, the main prerequisite for the appearance of scrolling is the chain. To avoid such problems, the chain must be looked after, and this must be done in several approaches.

Flushing. After each trip (or after several, if you are lazy), the chain needs to be washed and cleaned of dirt. Several substances can be used for washing. special cleaning agents, kerosene and white spirit. Before processing, the chain must be cleaned of dirt. It must be removed, rinsed in any container, and then rinsed with the cleaners.

Lubrication. After washing, the chain must be relubricated. A wide variety of lubricants can be used for this, most often LITOL 24 is used (the most difficult option due to its high density), liquid lubricants in an oiler, aerosol lubricants. It is worth choosing a lubricant carefully. high-quality substances are NOT washed off with water, are resistant to large fragments of dirt, reliably protect the chain from any “intrusion”.

Whichever option you choose, it is worth discussing it with professionals if you have never lubricated the chain before.

Pedaling: what are the problems and what are the causes

If a malfunction occurs for the first time, it can be difficult to determine what exactly it is. Signs of a pedaling problem:

  • The wheel does not spin or does not spin enough;
  • The bike chain slips while riding;
  • Increase in freewheel.

In general, the reasons why the pedals on the bike are spinning are as follows:

  • Worn bike sprocket cranks. To establish this reason, the comments of the need undergo a technical inspection: the problem is obvious. When worn, the cranks on the sprocket look frayed and worn out. A similar problem can arise from natural reasons, the bike is just old enough and already worn out. Or, while riding, the cyclist exerts too much force, applying excessive pressure on the pedals.
  • Why does the rear sprocket spin on a bike? The reason may also lie in the lack of regular technical inspection and insufficient washing: perhaps the sprocket on the bike is simply dirty.
  • Chain problem, which is one of the most common. The reason, as in the case of the wear of the sprocket cranks, may lie in the old age of the bike and not in regular maintenance. Perhaps the chain just needs washing and sufficient lubrication;
  • Rear ratchet problems can be due to several reasons. Many people sin by introducing too much oil or grease with an increased density. This could cause the ratchet to malfunction. Also, a prerequisite may be dirt and dust mixed with oil, or a broken bearing.

Bike sprocket crank problems: what to do

Once you have identified the source of the problem. the cranks. and understood the underlying cause, you can start fixing it. The simplest case is sprocket contamination. Just rinse the parts thoroughly, wipe with a dry, lint-free cloth and let dry. DO NOT lubricate parts when wet! After thoroughly drying, you can lubricate with special oils. An important point: there must not be too much grease, otherwise it will again lead to malfunctions.

If the sprocket is “lapped”, then it must be removed, disassembled, cleaned of dirt. A worn sprocket may need to be replaced with a new one or its teeth sharpened. Even if the sprocket on the bike can be repaired, it will NOT last for a long time, so it is better to spend money on repairs right away. If you have NEVER done anything like this before, and you are worried about scrolling on a bike, repair is the best solution.

Solving rear ratchet and chain problems on your bike

As in the previous case, the ratchet must be thoroughly cleaned, dried and lubricated. perhaps this will be enough. If not, the wear problem of the SEPARATE ratchet sprockets is solved by replacing them. In addition to sprockets for replacement at home, a key is purchased.

Lubricate the chain after cleaning it, you need to drip a drop onto each (this is important) link of the part. CAREFULLY CHECK if the chain has curved links. If there is, then they must be carefully brought back to their original position. If the chain is stretched or worn out too much, then it must be replaced with a new part.

In this case, you need to either use the bike until the problem is solved on its own (the chain reaches a certain level of wear), or (which is preferable), replace the entire transmission in a repair shop. A transmission is the mechanism that sets the bicycle in motion. It includes sprockets, chain and cassette (rear sprockets).

What to do to avoid pedaling?

Avoid greases that are too thick or old.

As you can see, many problems with a bicycle, including pedaling, can be solved simply: often washing and lubricating the part is enough. But even if the reason lies in something more, the problem of scrolling is solved quite simply and everyone can do it. Do not forget to regularly wash and lubricate the “iron horse”, as well as regularly carry out maintenance, and your bike will delight you for a long time.

Causes and solutions

If the pedals on the bike are spinning, this can happen for a variety of reasons. Most often, improper care of a two-wheeled vehicle leads to this. Trouble can be caused by prolonged failure to service the main functional systems of the bike. The wear of certain parts often leads to disastrous consequences. Let’s find out how to fix the problem of idle scrolling of the pedals on a bicycle, what factors contribute to the occurrence of such a breakdown.

Assessment of the general condition of the bike

If the pedals on the bike are scrolling, before moving on to disassembling its components and thinking about repairs, it is worth assessing the general condition of the bike. First of all, you need to check how correctly the rear and front derailleurs are set, which are responsible for changing the speeds. A failure in the settings will indicate an uncharacteristic annoying crackle while driving, as well as a fairly regular hit of the chain between the sprockets when pedaling.

Sometimes the problem affects bikes that do not have a gearshift system installed. In cases where the pedals are spinning on a bike of a similar plan, first of all, pay attention to the condition of the chain. It may just take a thorough cleaning and lubrication to fix the trouble.

How to fix spinning on a speed bike

The main reason why pedals spin the wheel poorly on a high-speed bike is complete wear of the rear sprocket system. First, it is determined how dirty the system is and its degree of wear. How to clean a cassette:

  • Take off the bike.
  • Clean the space between the stars with a flat brush.
  • Wipe the clove and washer with a cloth soaked in kerosene.

After thorough cleaning of dirt, check the condition of the bearings. Scattered or knocked-out parts must be replaced. The condition of the stars plays an important role. worn out teeth indicate their unsuitability. This is especially true for small sprockets. here chain slip and pedal scrolling are more pronounced.

Normal (left) and ground gear teeth

And, finally, check the performance of the system using the speed switch: through which stars the chain slips, then they must be replaced. After cleaning and partial replacement, the system is lubricated.

Rear hubs can also fail, the problem is the same as with a single speed bike. The cassette must be removed to access the bushings. The condition and position of the bearings, wear of the cone and roller follower are carefully checked. If the bushing is clearly suspected, it is recommended to install a new part.

When the pedals just spin, it’s a sure sign of transmission wear. To prevent the problem from turning into more unpleasant consequences, you should diagnose the bike in time and fix the malfunction.

Chain problems

Perhaps the problem lies in the overstretching of the chain. In this case, it begins to sag unnecessarily, which leads to a weak delight of the sprockets and, as a result, pedaling. How to tension the chain? To do this, you will have to shorten it. So, on one of the links there is a special latch that opens the ring connection of the chain. Having removed the part, it is enough to remove one or more links, knocking out the bushings from them with a hammer and a metal breakdown. In conclusion, it will be enough to connect the chain back to the entire latch.

If the above steps did NOT solve the problem, you will have to replace the chain with a new one.

Pedaling: what are the problems and what are the causes

If a malfunction occurs for the first time, it can be difficult to determine what exactly it is. Signs of a pedaling problem:

  • The wheel does not spin or does not spin enough;
  • The bike chain slips while riding;
  • Increase in freewheel.

Sprocket wear is the reason

In general, the reasons why the pedals on the bike are spinning are as follows:

  • Worn bike sprocket cranks. To establish this reason, the comments of the need undergo a technical inspection: the problem is obvious. When worn, the cranks on the sprocket look frayed and worn out. A similar problem can arise from natural reasons, the bike is just old enough and already worn out.   • Chain problem, which is one of the most common. The reason, as in the case of the wear of the sprocket cranks, may lie in the old age of the bike and not in regular maintenance. Perhaps the chain just needs washing and sufficient lubrication;

Even if the sprocket on the bike can be repaired, it will NOT last for a long time, so it is better to spend money on repairs right away. If you have NEVER done anything like this before, and you are worried about scrolling on a bike, repair is the best solution.

Chain problems

Often the center of the problem is old or worn tenacious.

If it has not been cleaned for a long time, then you need to clean it with a rag, kerosene and an old toothbrush to clean in inaccessible places.

After that, it is recommended to let the chain dry, and then lubricate with special oils (silicone-based). You can prevent this situation if you hear a creak in advance or the pedals will start to scroll harder. In this case, the chain is preventively wiped.

There is another situation when the chain is too stretched.

This is determined by external examination:

  • If it hangs, then the reason is this. In this situation, it can be shortened.
  • To do this, you need to find a specific link on which the latch will be.
  • It fixes the ring connection. It must be removed.
  • To shorten the chain, you need to remove several links with a hammer by knocking out bushings from them.
  • After that, put the retainer back and put on the chain.
  • If after all the above operations nothing has changed, you need to change the chain to a new one.

Bicycle chain worn

In this case, you need to either use the bike until the problem is solved on its own (the chain reaches a certain level of wear), or (which is preferable), replace the entire transmission in a repair shop. A transmission is the mechanism that sets the bicycle in motion. It includes sprockets, chain and cassette (rear sprockets).

Repair of a regular bike

If the pedals are spinning on the bike, repairs are simply necessary

When cleaning and lubricating the chain does NOT work, it is important to check the condition of the sprockets. It is important to change the sprockets and chain in the kit

Otherwise, the result will be short-lived. The new chain on worn parts will quickly stretch, and the old chain will quickly bend the teeth of the new element.

In some cases, the problem lies in the wear of the bushing itself. It can be repaired by grinding the cone in the Special Workshops. However, this will just slightly extend the life of the part. It is best to replace it with a new product right away.

Why does the chain slip on a bicycle under load? How to fix spinning on a speed bike

The main reason why pedals spin the wheel poorly on a high-speed bike is complete wear of the rear sprocket system. First, it is determined how dirty the system is and its degree of wear. How to clean a cassette:

  • Take off the bike.

We repair a high-speed bike

To determine exactly why scrolling happens on a high-speed bike, it is worth determining the degree of wear on the rear sprocket system. To do this, dismantle such a unit, thoroughly clean the space between the elements, wipe the part with kerosene.

To understand the reason for scrolling on a speed bike, you need to determine the degree of wear of the rear sprocket system.

After that, you can start checking the bearings and teeth of the sprockets. Knocked out or loose parts should be replaced. Sharpened or crooked teeth indicate that it is time to replace that part of the assembly. Wear on the smallest elements will give the most pedal creep.

After replacing damaged parts, the entire system should be properly lubricated with suitable compounds.

The cranking problem on a high-speed bike, as well as on a regular bike, can often be associated with a failed rear hub. In this case, it is necessary to remove the cassette, carefully check the condition of the roller pusher, bearings, and the cone itself. It is better to replace worn-out parts with new ones, and then install the entire system back. After the completed work and the installation of new elements, your iron friend will be as good as new and you will forget to scroll for a long time.

So we figured out the causes of idle scrolling. Having studied the options for their elimination

It is very important to systematically clean and lubricate the running system of a two-wheeled vehicle, and then many problems with the performance of the bicycle can be avoided.

Weak chain tension in bicycles without gears

The rear fork of a conventional bicycle, without shifting speeds, under the influence of loads and vibration, changes the position of the shaft along the axis of the rear hub. Chain drive slack increases. A slight push releases the chain from the sprocket teeth. The chain slips off. To fix the problem, you need to follow the steps in sequence:

  • Upside down bike.
  • Loosen tensioning bolts.
  • Will settle the wheel to the required depth.
  • Tighten the bolts hard in the new location.

Allowable chain slack

Cycling will be fun and the chain will not go off anymore if you fit the wheel properly. Correct position implies:

  • Lowering the chain by about 5 mm. the state “in line” makes it difficult to pedal;
  • Here the rear wheel hub should be perpendicular to the plane of the frame. Otherwise, the risk of deformation of the rim increases;

To improve the grip of the nuts, use lock washers.

If in the extreme position of the sprocket critical slack is NOT eliminated, you need to rivet the links to reduce the chain length.

Weak tension

If your chain comes loose on your bike without gears, all you need to do is unscrew the two nuts on the rear wheel axle and then pull it towards you. Tighten the nuts, but make sure that the wheel does not move closer to the center of the frame. After completing these steps, you will see that the chain will not sag. Accordingly, the likelihood that it flies again is completely excluded. But in the case of this problem, on a high-speed bike you will have to sweat. A special spring is installed in the gear selector, which automatically pulls the chain. With prolonged use, it loses its elasticity, which leads to similar problems. Since the transmission is not separable, you will have to change the switch to a new one.

What to do to avoid pedaling?

The most common cause of spinning on a bike is a chain malfunction

Therefore, you should give her Close attention and care in order to avoid possible problems. After each long ride (especially after driving in bad weather), thoroughly rinse the chain, remove dirt and excess lubricant

Chain and Pedal Lubrication

Avoid greases that are too thick or old.

As you can see, many problems with a bicycle, including pedaling, can be solved simply: often washing and lubricating the part is enough. But even if the reason lies in something more, the problem of scrolling is solved quite simply and everyone can do it. Do not forget to regularly wash and lubricate the “iron horse”, as well as regularly carry out maintenance, and your bike will delight you for a long time.

Curvature of one or more links

Such a problem can be encountered quite rarely, but it can still bother you at any time. If you notice that the links are curved, you have two options. The first is to completely replace the chain. The second is to get rid of the bent links using a special squeeze. Do NOT use this method on bicycles without variable transmission. On models with gear derailleurs, this method is recommended as a temporary solution.

Bent link

Front or rear derailleur incorrectly configured

This only happens on bicycles with gears. All you have to do is adjust the rear derailleur as precisely as possible. The problem is quite simple to notice: the chain can randomly jump to another gear during the pedaling process with great force, but you will not press on the shifter petal. There are two bolts on the switch housing, with which you need to adjust the travel limit of the mechanism.

Rear derailleur adjusting bolts

If you see that your chain flies, it does not always mean that you need to change it entirely. It is possible that the problem lies elsewhere. If you do NOT want it to fall off at the most inopportune moment for this, we recommend carrying out maintenance from time to time. Check the transmission very carefully for wear. A simple check before driving can help you avoid serious injury, especially if you prefer to ride aggressive or even extreme. Hopefully the tips above will help you avoid future breakdowns.
