Rear wheel staggers on a speed bike

What to do?

If it’s just loosening the nuts, a wrench will help solve the problem. The compression between the radius nut (cone) and the locknut is loosened, the gap between the locknut and the bike frame is filled with an engraver or washer.

The front and rear wheel devices are different from each other, therefore, the stages of inspection of each of them must be said separately.

Who is guilty?

If your wheel began to wobble noticeably, most likely one of three things happened:

  • the bike worked at its limit and was often subjected to heavy loads;
  • poor quality parts were installed on the bike;
  • parts have become unusable due to long-term operation.

At the “micro level”, some detail could be erased, leading to the formation of backlash. Rotational errors are usually caused by the following technical or mechanical problems:

  • the wheel hub is erased;
  • the cone wears out, which is why the bearing raceways become unusable;
  • the notches of the locknut are erased, leading to too tight adhesion of the locknut with the cone.

What to do if a bicycle wheel is wobbling

While riding, a cyclist often notices a strange shaking of one of the wheels. To understand why this is happening, you must immediately dismount and carefully examine the damage. To do this, you need to remove the wheel, take it by the axle and turn it first in one direction, then in the other direction. Taking thin wrenches, you need to adjust the clamping of the locknut and check for backlash.

The wobbly wheel problem has traditionally been associated with backlash. Backlash, or a gap, typically occurs between interconnected mechanical parts that rotate in close proximity to each other. In other words, one element of the system starts to move, while the other remains motionless. On a wheel, this happens due to the fact that its plane is displaced in relation to the hub or axis of rotation. In the latter case, the wheel shifts to one side or the other and begins to “beat”, moving along the figure eight.

The front wheel is noisy

Having discovered a malfunction of the front wheel, you must immediately find out what the reason is and make repairs. When disassembling the front wheel, you need to take the following steps one by one:

  • Remove the wheel from the bike frame.
  • Disassemble the bushing in detail, clean it.
  • Check for damage.
  • If there are no malfunctions, re-grease, install separate bearings.
  • Tighten the radial nut on one side of the axle, then tighten the lock nut.
  • Bring axis back.
  • Twist from the other end, so that the length of the nuts on the sides of the axis is equal.
  • Secure bearings with normal tension locknuts.
  • Make sure the nuts are evenly tightened (work should be done with two thin open-end wrenches).
  • Install the wheel in its original place, tighten it with nuts for clamping.
  • Check if the wheel rotates smoothly, if there is any backlash.
  • If a gap is found, remove it using a washer.

Rear wheel defective

If the rear wheel of your bike is loose, you need to remove it and take the following steps:

  • Disconnect the ratchet to gain access to the locknut and taper.
  • Disassemble the bushing, wipe it, removing dirt, as well as the old grease.
  • Assess bearing condition, especially raceways, view radius nuts.
  • If a malfunction is found, replace the part with a good one.
  • Return the bushing parts to their places, lay with fresh grease.
  • Tighten locknuts, cones.
  • Compress the cone, as well as the locknuts on the side where the ratchet is installed, and on the other end, adjust the bearing tension.
  • Replace the ratchet.
  • Check the ease of rotation (it should be smooth), fix.
  • Install the wheel to the frame.

What will happen if “not treated”?

If the problem is triggered, the wheel hub will completely fail, rendering the wheel inoperative. Any cyclist can detect a backlash even without a specialist examination, therefore, for the “iron horse” to feel normal, a good master’s gaze is quite enough, providing from one technical inspection a year.

What to do if a bicycle wheel is wobbling

The “bicycle” season is over, and it’s time to take stock of the Lexus Trike children’s bike. In short, they are very happy with the bike. He turned out to be a real “workhorse”. As a result, the stroller was practically not used in the summer.

So, the pros of the Lexus Trike kids bike.

Perfect permeability. We constantly walked on “rough terrain”. With such wheels, no problem. Curbs also did not cause any difficulties. It is not scary to press harder on the handle rigidly connected to the frame. The only caveat is the screws that secure the handle to the bike. They sometimes get loose, so you need to keep an eye on them. Since this was written about in the comments to the previous article about this bike, we can say that almost every Lexus Trike owner will face such a disaster.

In terms of handling. Those who switch to this bike from a stroller with swivel wheels will have to get used to the fact that it takes effort to turn (and often just lift it onto the rear wheels). But if the bike is not driven by a small child, this is not too much of a drawback. Other than that, there is no problem to carry it with one hand.

Still, of course, the handle could have been a little higher, but for an average height of 170 cm it is enough not to go “bent”.

There are also surprises when the lock on the steering wheel (which prevents the child from turning the steering wheel) rises. But this only happens when the child understands how it can be done. There’s nothing you can do about it.

There are no complaints at all. We loaded it in a way that not every stroller can withstand. In addition to the child, a bag with a sand set, a large ball, a toy stroller (hung on the handle), and a wheelchair duck “walked” in the bicycle all summer long. A couple more bags with groceries can be hung on the handle, only then you need to make sure that the bike does not tip over when the child gets out.

They dared to load it into the car only once, when we went to the dacha (into an empty cabin and disassembled). The base of the bicycle with wheels did not fit into the trunk. I managed to put only the parental pen there.

Pedals. The bike has three sitting positions, which allows you to first move it farther so that your feet are on the footrest, and then, when the child grows up, move it closer to the pedals. This year, my daughter did not reach the pedals, she put her feet on the footboards or simply dangled them “in the air”, knocking the toes of her boots on the pedals. A couple of times I tried to put my foot on the front wheel (it is very close to my feet). As a result, the leg fell between the wheel and the frame to which it is attached, and the bike “slowed down”. The main thing at this moment is not to push him with force, so as not to injure the child’s leg.

Seat belts. The belts are five-point, but since there is a sufficiently large gap between the child’s back and the handle to which the belts are attached, even the most loosened belts pull the child back by the shoulders very strongly (even when the seat is maximally shifted to the handle). As a result, no belts were put on the shoulders, only the legs were fastened. That was enough. A separate conversation is the belt buckle itself. It is quite tight, and out of habit, they pinched their fingers with it a couple of times.

Seat. The seat has a soft pad that is attached to the seat itself with plastic clips. But the fabric of the lining, into which the clips are inserted, is so thin that almost immediately these holes for the clips were disheveled (the child tried to remove it on his own and pulled it strongly). As a result, it was decided to remove it so as not to dangle. Actually, in the summer, it is not needed, but for the cold season, you can somehow strengthen these holes in the fabric.

My daughter is delighted with the bike. Like many children on the playground. I quickly learned how to climb up and down on it on my own. And several times I even managed to fall asleep on it on the way home.

Mom is also happy. I never regretted that we bought it.

Tricycles with handle

There are a large number of models from different manufacturers of children’s bicycles. First, you should familiarize yourself with their general characteristics.

The bike has a simple design. It is a reliable, stable and easy form of transport. There are several main types of bicycles for children:

  • three-wheeled;
  • “Run bike”;
  • two-wheeled.

For the smallest riders, a tricycle with a handle is suitable, which is also called a “cycle stroller”, because it combines the functionality of both vehicles. These are quite popular and practical models.

A small child, sitting on a bicycle, is not able to pedal for a long time and therefore the parents play the main role in movement. A handle attached to the back allows you to control the bike like a sidecar, pushing it in front of you and controlling the direction of travel.

The children’s tricycle is equipped with many different optional accessories that, if not needed, can be easily removed. It is a multifunctional mode of transport that can be freely transformed.

Once your child has learned to sit confidently, it is better to use a bicycle rather than a bulky stroller for walking in warm weather. These handle-type kids tricycles are recommended for children from six months to four years old. During this period, the kid will be able to learn how to pedal, control the steering wheel, master the basic driving skills and subsequently change to a two-wheeled model without any problems.

How to raise the handlebars on a kid’s bike?

Most toddler bikes are designed to adjust the handlebars not only in height but also in tilt. This allows you to configure the bike in such a way that riding occurs in the most comfortable and safe position for the child.

Usually, the handlebars on a kid’s bike can be lifted up by loosening the center lock nut. If the child assumes a crouched position during landing, it is necessary to move the control higher. When the baby hits the steering wheel with his knees, it is enough to change its inclination.

How I got out

I did not start sawing the stem with a hacksaw, although it is possible that I will do it in the future. I had a carry-over from the HVZ Sputnik lying around in the storeroom. I installed it on the bike along the way, putting the steering wheel of a ram. What feelings do I have from a ram on such a bike, read this article.

Summing up, I want to say that this procedure is not difficult, but not pleasant. Therefore, to reduce the possibility of the wedge getting stuck in the bike fork, you can do the following things:

  • Follow instructions for minimum possible stemming depth.
  • Tighten the central bolt of the stem, not “from all the foolishness”.
  • Insert stem deeper into the fork stem than the minimum recommended length.

Popular models of tricycles with a handle

Let us dwell separately on the main characteristics of the most popular models of tricycles with a handle.

Bicycle SMART TRIKE Zoo-collection

A colorful model that has several options for bright colors, repeating the color of animals. An interesting wheel technology is double injection. Wheels are soft, quiet, do not puncture or deflate.

Removable parental handle, wide, double, with adjustable height. There are places for storing things: a bag on the handle and a plastic box on the trunk, a stand for bottles and a phone.

High comfortable seat with soft cover. The visor has several positions and can be completely folded.

There are seat belts and a bumper that prevents them from falling out. The bumper does not unfold, it can only be completely removed.

Non-slip pedals, foldable footrest. Additional functions: locking the front wheel, pedals, foot brake.

In order to raise the handlebars of a bicycle with a threaded steering column, you need to do the following:

Loosen the central bolt of the steering wheel stem, but do not completely unscrew it, otherwise the wedge-retainer will come off;

Set the steering wheel to the required height and align with the front wheel;

Tighten the center bolt. Please note that after tightening, the structure should not stagger, move up and down, and there should be no backlashes.

Model Lamborghini L2

Manufactured in China under official license from Lamborghini. The whole frame is metal. The wheels are inflatable, pumped up by a car pump. Wide reversible handle with small bag. An open basket is attached at the bottom. Parking brake available.

The bike canopy is similar to the corresponding part of the stroller and has three positions. A special window is made on top of the awning, which allows you to see the child while driving. There is a wide, comfortable back with a soft pad. It is high, reaching the base of the awning. The backrest is adjustable using special metal fasteners located on both sides.

There is a safety rim equipped with a lower connection to the seat. This rim can be folded out easily with buttons. Additionally there is a seat belt.

rear, wheel, bike

A footrest is attached at the bottom, which, when folded, is completely hidden under the bike frame. On the steering wheel there is a musical light panel that simulates the sound of the engine, the work of headlights and turn signals.

The rear wheel of the bike is wobbling

Item Features

The rear hub of a bicycle is the central part of the rear wheel that rotates it. Attaches to the frame with drop points. The front wheel also has a hub, but with a slightly different design. In addition to ensuring free rotation, it is also responsible for rolling. movement without effort.

Rear wheel

  • First of all, remove the wheel. A ratchet is most often included in the rear hub design. It must also be removed first, since there is a cone and a lock nut under the ratchet. Otherwise, it will not work to service the bushing.
  • We disassemble the bushing and wipe all parts from old grease and dirt.
  • We look at the radius nuts, raceways and the bearings themselves. If there is mechanical damage, we replace the worn part with a new one.
  • After checking, we put all the parts of the bushing in place, put in a new grease. We tighten radius and lock nuts.
  • We tighten the cone and locknut from the side of the ratchet, and on the other side we adjust the tension of the bearings. Often the bearings relax when the second pair of nuts is clamped. In order to avoid this, you can use the bike frame or call an assistant.
  • Install the ratchet in place. Check the ease of rotation, fix.
  • The wheel is assembled, and now you need to install it on the frame. If there is a gap between the locknut and the frame, then it must be filled with a thick washer.
  • We press the wheel with the clamping nut from the side of the ratchet. Now it is necessary to check the correct tension of the bearings. After that, we clamp the wheel on the other side.
  • Check the ease of rolling and the presence of backlash. If everything is done correctly, the wheel will spin smoothly, and there will be no backlash.

What to do?

If it’s just loosening the nuts, a wrench will help solve the problem. The compression between the radius nut (cone) and the locknut is loosened, the gap between the locknut and the bike frame is filled with an engraver or washer.

Cleaning and lubrication

When disassembling the rear wheel hub of a bicycle, wipe each bearing ball with a cloth soaked in kerosene or gasoline. Inspect each one carefully. Damaged. replace.

Then remove and inspect the bicycle axle. Wipe it with a dry cloth. In case of stubborn dirt, try to remove them with a cloth soaked in gasoline, dry.

How To Remove And Replace Your Rear Wheel

Only lubricate the bushing with a special agent. chain lubrication will not work. Use the axle box for bearings. Apply to dry, clean parts. The layer should not be made thick. If you overdo it, then when driving, the lubricant will protrude over the treated surface, dirt and dust will adhere to it, which will lead to wear.
