Bicycle on public transport
You can transport unpacked bicycles in Kiev by city train, trolleybus, tram and funicular. Bicycles can only be transported in a packed state on the metro and buses. How much it costs and other details are told by the Association of Cyclists of Ukraine.
Open from 6:00 to 10:30 in the morning and from 16:15 to 21:30 in the evening. The bike can be transported at any time of the train operation.
The third or fourth carriages of the train are usually marked with blue stickers “Bicycle”, however, a bicycle can be transported in any carriage, because regardless of the sticker, there are no special devices for bicycles in the cars. Only eight carriages have special devices for holding a bicycle (and there are 10 trains of the city train), however, even without these racks it is very convenient to transport a bicycle here.
Transportation of bicycles is free. You pay only for yourself. UAH 1.70.
Cons: At some stations of the city train (for example, “Zenith”, “Levoberezhnaya”) there are no rails and ramps for the delivery of a bicycle. This is a disadvantage not only for cyclists, but also for passengers with suitcases or strollers and for people with disabilities, the latter will not be able to get onto the platform.
It is forbidden to transport a bicycle in the metro by the “Rules for using the metro”. The rules were adopted in the 90s and are already outdated, so there is a chance to initiate and bring about changes to them, requiring that the transport of bicycles be allowed. For example, in London, Berlin and other major cities of the world, you can transport bicycles on the subway, except for rush hours in the morning and evening.
Even with a bicycle packed in a cover, you may not be allowed on the metro, since the sum of the baggage dimensions should not exceed 200 cm (a bicycle in a cover usually exceeds 20-40 cm).
If you are still allowed to ride a packed bike on the subway, you have to pay 2.00 UAH for it.
A bicycle can be transported at any time, unpacked, provided that it does not contaminate passengers’ clothes, interior trim and seats (clauses 5.6 and 5.7 of the Rules for the use of tram and trolleybus in Ukrainian cities).
Bicycle transportation is free. You pay only for yourself. UAH 1.50.
Bus (including intercity bus), minibuses
Works from 6:00 to 0:00, or according to the timetable.
The bike can be transported in a packed form if its dimensions do not exceed 1005030 cm (according to the Rules for the provision of passenger road transport services). Usually a bicycle has such dimensions in length and height, from which both wheels were removed, the chair and handlebars were lowered and the pedals were unscrewed. With a rear wheel, the bike has a great length. from 120 to 140 cm.
HOW TO TRANSPORT CYCLE IN TRAIN
A bicycle packed in the specified dimensions is considered a piece of baggage, and if it is the only baggage (i.e. cargo from 10 to 40 kg), then it is transported free of charge. Luggage must be placed in the cabin so as not to interfere with the free passage of passengers along the passenger compartment and not block access to the main and emergency exits.
For each subsequent piece of baggage, you need to pay the full cost of UAH 1.50, or another amount, if we are talking about long-distance transportation.
Is Using a Bike for Transport the Best way to Avoid the Coronavirus?
The bike can be transported unpacked if it does not interfere with passengers.
Why are they not allowed on the subway with a bicycle??
On many bicycle forums, you can read the words of indignation of cyclists to the metro workers, who did not let them through “without showing a single piece of paper” through the turnstiles. On the other hand, many write that they managed to ride the metro with their bike without any problems. Well, let’s try to figure out what documents are guided by the controllers in the metro when they let cyclists or do not let them in.
For passengers, the main document is the “Rules for using the St. Petersburg metro”, which can be read in station lobbies, on platforms, in carriages, as well as on the official website of the St. Petersburg metro (http://www.metro.spb.ru/9.html). the prohibition of bicycle transportation is not mentioned in these rules, however, some points can be applied if desired:
9.3. Enter the station with ice cream, as well as with luggage and clothing that can stain passengers, wagons, facilities and station devices. As items that can contaminate or damage the clothes of citizens, carriages, structures and devices of the station, including food products without packaging or in open packaging, drinks in open packaging are recognized.
9.6. Carry bulky baggage, the sum of measurements of which in length, width and height, and for a roll. in height and its two diameters or axes at the base exceeds 200 cm, or the length of which is more than 220 cm, as well as any baggage that may cause injury to passengers during transportation on an escalator (linoleum, roofing material, metal mesh in rolls, heavy metal profiles, etc.)
9.25. Ride motorcycles, bicycles, scooters and other similar vehicles.
Most often, controllers refer to the above points of the rules: they offer to remove the wheel, allegedly to reduce the likelihood that the bike will independently leave the escalator, they ask to wrap the bike with a bag or film, in order to avoid contamination of the clothes of the surrounding passengers, or agree to let them in only after completing both of the above actions. If the controller behaved according to the above scenario, you are lucky, and you will most likely be allowed to pass.
However, there are metro employees who flatly refuse to let you in with a bicycle, and all attempts to reach an agreement end in nothing. You begin to reasonably hint at the first time that the rules of use have not been violated, and that there is no reason not to let you in, but there is a special postcard “On the procedure for transporting bicycles in the subway”, which prohibits the transport of bicycles. Its text is given below:
About the procedure for transporting bicycles in the subway
Instruct all involved workers that the effect of Postcard 88 dated 07/03/2002 is canceled.
Deputy Head of the Revenue Collection Service S.Yu. Klyuchenko
The above postcard cancels the effect of the previous one, in which it was stated that the bike can be transported with the wheel removed. Thus, the actions of the controllers are completely legal and motivated. It is possible to argue whether it is good or bad for a very long time, but at the moment the situation is as follows. Way out: pack the bike in a bicycle case, try to carry it disassembled or go by ground transport.
Is it possible to transport a bicycle in transport
In the process of driving around the city, circumstances may turn out so that you will need to get somewhere by public transport. This may be due to the breakdown of your iron horse, due to rain, due to lack of time, or simply due to laziness. However, it is unclear whether a bicycle can be transported in one form of transport or another. Let’s start with the metro.
Transportation of a bicycle in ground public transport (bus, tram, trolleybus)
The passenger is not allowed to:
That’s all that is said about baggage transportation. It is clear that it is possible to transport a stroller and a dog, but there is nothing clear about the bicycle. Do not rush to run for a tape measure. your bike (if you do not have a BMX) exceeds 180 cm in the sum of three dimensions (only the length is about 160 cm). As a result, we come to the conclusion that there is nothing to do with a bicycle (even in a bicycle case) on a bus, a tram, or a trolleybus, although you can always try to talk to the conductor (the main thing is politeness and rationality, remember, they have a very difficult and nervous work ).
From all of the above, only one conclusion can be drawn: unlike developed European countries, we have not yet created any conditions for cyclists, and in any case, a bicycle cannot be transported in public transport, regardless of the circumstances. Well, the rules will have to be followed. another great reason to ride through our wonderful, unfortunately, not quite cycling city.
