Is it possible to ride a bike in the rain

Clear lenses

Regular sunglasses let in too little light, which can make road obstacles difficult to see. Therefore, in conditions of poor visibility, protective goggles with clear or yellow lenses should be used. If you have vision problems and wear glasses with optical lenses, a bicycle cap with a visor will protect them from rain and splashes of dirt.

possible, ride, bike, rain

9.Bicycle machine

There is no better way to deal with the rain than not getting caught in it. A smart home workout from 30 minutes to an hour can have a dramatic effect on your fitness. Or you can just pedal and watch TV, nothing too.

Choosing a lamp and headlight for a bike

Chain lubrication

In the rainy season, use a more viscous chain lubricant and apply thicker. it is better to have a chain that needs cleaning than a rusted one. Remember that grease will not penetrate into the chain links unless the chain is completely dry.

Turns

Curves in the rain are treacherous and dangerous. Use your body to keep the bike upright when cornering. It should bend more than the bike to help maintain balance. By practicing these inclines, you will be able to turn at a reasonable speed in conditions where tires slide along drawn road markings or subtle oil slick.

What to wear when cycling in the rain

From time to time, there are questions about what to wear in the rain when cycling, so let’s talk a little about that. This topic should be considered not only in terms of clothing, but in general. how to increase the comfort of a cyclist in rainy weather.

To begin with, I will say that a downpour, storm, hurricane and other manifestations of the elements will have to be recognized as non-flying weather, because no matter how you dress, you will soon get wet, and you will not have to talk about any comfort.

A sudden change in the weather, unexpected rain, too, can hardly be solved with clothes. hardly anyone constantly carries with them all the rain ammunition. Therefore, our case is a constantly dripping rain, not particularly intense, but not going to end in the next hour.

4.Cleaning the chain

Immediately after returning from a trip in the rain, you will need a shower and a towel. The same goes for your bike chain. Clean it with a chain cleaner and wipe dry. A few drops of lubricant will protect the chain and can double its life cycle. It’s a good idea to do the same for the other mechanisms on the bike. front and rear derailleurs and brake calipers. Just keep the cleaner away from the bottom bracket, bushings, rims, brake discs and pads. Ideally, it would be to wash the bike completely, but we understand how unlikely this option is.

To work

It is worth remembering the location of all heating items and drying surfaces (as well as their availability and the possibility of using them in general) that are near your workplace. If you have a shower, then great.

Depending on the strength of the elements, take with you a set of spare clothes that will allow you to feel comfortable and not violate the dress code adopted in the organization.

If the rain is weak and its intensification is not predicted, it will be enough just to put on one of the universal raincoats, which can be easily put in a bag or backpack on the way back and dried on any nail sticking out of the wall.

It is also worth having a backup plan in case the weather worsens. find out in advance if it is possible to leave the bike at work in a safe place so that you can return home by public transport.

On a visit

Recommendations are similar to a trip to work, with the only difference that there is a possibility of intercepting dry and suitable clothes from friends.

But it’s still better to have the necessary minimum with you.

When visiting (if your friend is not Count Dracula), you have every chance to get the necessary set of heating surfaces and take a warm shower.

How to ride a bike in the rain

On business

The difference from the first two points is that this trip involves not just a trip from point A to point B, but includes a much larger number of points and stops in the route.

This means that you will not need to be in wet clothes for a long time and, most likely, you can limit yourself only to waterproof outerwear.

An important point is that it is better to clarify and remember the route using electronic maps before a trip or in dry intervals, since the touch screen becomes poorly controlled under the influence of drops and, moreover, there is a great danger of completely flooding an expensive gadget.

How to Ride a Motorcycle in the Rain (7 Steps)

Now let’s take a closer look at the purpose of your trip.

How to ride a bike in the rain

Rain by itself does not spoil your cycling day, it only imposes some restrictions, and in some cases even removes them.

Yes, a ride in the rain is not as pleasant as a ride on a spring morning, but it is exactly the same road, the same bike and the same arms, legs and torso! It turns out that it’s just a matter of mood.

The worst thing that water from the sky can threaten in the city is wet hair, clothes and the contents of bags, as well as the lack of a backup plan (how to keep warm, what to change into, how to revive wet equipment).

All these troubles can be avoided by remembering a few simple rules.

Let’s make a reservation right away that in this article we will not consider large cycling trips and situations when the Ministry of Emergency Situations sends an SMS with a recommendation not to leave the house.

Also, we will not consider the option in which your work is associated with constant traveling on bicycles. desperate bike couriers know what to do in the rain without this article.

About changing tires and chains specifically for weather conditions, perhaps also in a separate article.

The first, what you have to decide is the weather forecast and the degree of your trust in it. Better to always prepare for slightly worse weather than promised.

Third. it is the choice of what you would like to leave dry in the first place.

For documents / equipment. from a regular backpack with a bag system to a comfortable waterproof bag

For the body. a waterproof jacket, a raincoat or a bright and comfortable raincoat (I think why a bright one can not be explained).

For the legs. gaiters (for example, such) or just spare sneakers. Or at least socks.

For a bicycle (fenders. stationary or temporary, mud flaps, special water-repellent chain lubricant).

Bike ride

The easiest and most enjoyable of all types of rain trips.

Firstly, there are always few people in the rain, even in the most popular and crowded places.

Secondly, you can choose any convenient route for yourself (for example, avoid highways), as well as end the trip at any time and go to warm up with delicious coffee.

If the route of the walk is well known to you and is safe enough. for example, it is a park or an embankment. then your favorite music in headphones or a speaker will help to improve your mood (again, it is important to remember about the water resistance of the equipment).

Brakes

In wet weather, your brakes become less effective and perform worse. The reason is that when braking, the wheel needs to make a full revolution, during this period the pads completely remove water and sand from the braking surface. And only then they begin to fully fulfill their main function.

As a result, you have a longer braking distance. Remember this. Especially when there is a car, cyclist or pedestrian nearby. Brake in advance.

One more detail. For a month of “wet” races, the brake pads can be completely worn out, because water and sand is the easiest way to “kill” them.

Have to ride your bike in the rain. be prepared for the fact that you will soon have to spend money on new brake pads.

Road surface

In the rain, it becomes especially slippery: drops of gasoline, oil, fuel oil. all this rises to the surface and the asphalt turns into a continuous oil puddle, slipping and falling on which is easier than a steamed turnip. A few tips:

  • See a rainbow spot. go around it.
  • Do not brake abruptly.
  • We also do not recommend turning at intersections at high speed.
  • Road markings become particularly slippery when it rains. And with it. fallen leaves and metal surfaces. Drive around them.
  • Puddles. Even in the most harmless puddle, a giant pit can be hidden (it’s not for us to tell you what “Ukrainian asphalt” is). So stay as far away from puddles as possible.

On

Chain lubrication

The best option is to apply a thicker chain lubricant. Better to have a dirty than a rusty chain. Because the first chain can always be cleaned (find out how to do it right here). But with rusty, almost nothing can be done.

Rusty chain is every cyclist’s nightmare

Wings

To ride comfortably in wet weather instead of disgusting, you need to equip your bike with full-size bike fenders. The wider and longer they are, the less water will get on you.

Important to know: Not all bikes can be fitted with bicycle mudguards. And some do not want to install them at all. Like, it’s not aesthetically pleasing. It’s up to you to choose: feel dry and comfortable, or look beautiful, but ride with wet toes and feet. And the first will begin to rub over time, the second will begin to freeze. All this will cause terrible discomfort.

Yes, and your beautiful appearance will also quickly get dirty with a fountain of water, constantly dousing you from under the wheels of the bike.

Let’s pay special attention to group trips. On a rainy day like this, you should not appear without wings. this is one of the unspoken rules of cyclists. Dirty splash from under the wheels can reach a rider moving from behind up to 10 meters away. He won’t be delighted for sure.

Correct cycling gear

There are cyclists who don’t care about rain or snow: they feel comfortable in any, even the wettest, underwear. If you are not like that, wear suitable cycling equipment. For instance:

  • waterproof vest or jacket with a hood;
  • polypropylene thermal underwear;
  • woolen socks will not hurt;
  • on shoes. on top of it special neoprene bicycle shoe covers;
  • for hand protection. waterproof and windproof gloves.

Otherwise, you will get wet, freeze, and immediately catch a cold.

Remember: while cycling, your body sweats a lot. Therefore, clothes should be dry not only outside, but also inside. The most suitable for this task are modern materials such as Gore-Tex.

There is no money for such technology. just make sure that your clothes are well ventilated.

To avoid getting your shoes wet, wear special neoprene bicycle shoe covers

How To Ride A Road Bike In Wet Weather | Tips For Cycling In The Rain

Cycling glasses

We wrote here about why you need to wear cycling goggles. To this we just add that the accessory will additionally protect your eyes from splashes and raindrops. Important: insert transparent or maximum yellow lenses. Others will let in too little light. This will make road obstacles difficult for you to see.

Shine

You should always be visible on the road. Heavy rain and blinding headlights of cars in the “oncoming” are a factor preventing this. How to deal with this? A beautiful and bright cycling uniform will not help. The best option is a powerful bike light.

How to ride a bike in the rain: 8 tips for beginners

Sooner or later, everyone will face this problem. To cycle in the rain and stay dry, and if you’re lucky, also clean, read our BikeMe tips.

How to prepare for cycling in the rain

Today I deliberately rode my bike in the rain for the first time. Not because there was nowhere to leave the bike, and not hating the whole world for wetness and cold. And it’s even strange to write this, but I enjoyed the trip! After all, I was ready for bad weather.

I’ll make a reservation right away: the only way not to get wet and not bathe the bike in dirty water is not to ride it in the rain. But if you take certain measures, it will turn out to get wet moderately and not everywhere, dry out quickly and experience a minimum of discomfort during the ride. Or maybe even like

Body

Slim cycling (or running) rain jacket
Oilcloth raincoat

I tried both options. The raincoat does not get wet even in the pouring rain, it covers the legs and head (even with a helmet). If you come across a good model, it will resemble a chemical protection suit, covering most of the body. But the raincoat blows in the wind, and besides, it is very hot in the film. I had enough for 5 km of leisurely pedaling from a night ride in the summer, then I had to get loose and get wet.

Cycling raincoats are technologically advanced. My Summer Craft Move Rain Jacket has the front of the sleeves, chest and back made of windproof and drip-resistant fabric, and the sleeves on the inside and sides are made of mesh material. In the rain, the jacket gets wet quickly, but at the same time the sensations cannot be compared with riding in wet knitwear. most of the water flows down the fabric, and as soon as the rain stops, the material dries up in a matter of minutes. Plus fits into a jersey and weighs a couple of dozen grams. If possible, I advise you to get such a thing.!

When the rear wheel doesn’t throw water over your back and pants. thanks to the wing. you don’t have to worry about your legs. Sports cycling shorts do not get wet quickly, especially the diaper underneath, but dry almost instantly.

Head

Reflective fabric helmet cover
Cling film

Rolling with a wet head in the wind is at least unpleasant. And if you roll for a long time, then it is also dangerous to health. Today the mok is shameful. I just didn’t think to put a bag on my helmet. And although the film will always be with me, I will definitely spend on a special case.

Eyes

Expensive glasses with antifog and water-repellent coating
Any glasses

Glasses are an essential accessory for cyclists. Especially in the rain. Although the visibility in wet lenses is not ideal, rain drops do not flood the eyes and do not deprive the rider of the vision. We are talking about fractions of a second, but they can also be critical. It is better if these are sports glasses with maximum visibility and ventilation of glasses (or anti-fog), transparent or light yellow. Was at Lynx Norfolk today, great glasses for their value.

Legs

Cycling shoes with water-repellent overshoes
Sneakers in cling film

Would have ruined the new riboks if the Apollo Trace 45 was on a chain, not a belt. There was no cling film at work, the tightly tied bags were disheveled in the wind and were eager to penetrate the transmission. With known consequences. And so after 13 km, perfectly clean, albeit slightly damp shoes. Since the Kiev climate is amazingly changeable, I plan to cut the tube with cling film in two and always carry half of it with me in my backpack. Disadvantages of the solution. the legs are flat and the contact with the pedals is slightly worse (if there are no tenacious spikes).

Bike

Full size fixed fenders
Quick release folding wings

I had to suffer for two seasons, getting soaked 15 times to the skin and chomping diapers (thanks to the saddle with a hole) in order to always have a FunGuard wing curling into a tube. Looks like an amateur, but protects the ass and back perfectly. And if your feet get wet, let it be. I highly recommend their fenders if you don’t want to “decorate” the bike with a stationary structure. But on the main urban singlespeed Cutter I will still put Topeak DEFENDER.

Things

Waterproof backpack or backpack cover
Big package

My Gud Rolltop is extremely reluctant to get wet even in a rainstorm, so I limited myself to the rear fender so that the dirt from the wheel would not fly. If your backpack does not have this useful property, get a waterproof case. It is also possible to carry a duty package (certainly from ATB), but I see no reason to save on this.

How to ride a bike in the rain?

Can I ride in the rain? Of course. But, as with snow or heat, there are subtleties here.

The best bike for a city in the rain is a bike fitted with wide, full-size fenders. The more the wheel is closed, the less water will get on you. When you ride without wings, a fountain of water flies in all directions, and the first thing that gets wet is the butt and legs. But not all bicycles can be fitted with fenders, and some cyclists do not want to install fenders at all for aesthetic reasons. For such people, there are other types of protection from the rain. For example, quick-release fenders, zip-tie fenders, roll-up fenders. But all of them are less effective, often only cover part of the cyclist and are more suitable for wet roads.

City bike with full fenders. Denmark and the Netherlands have a lot of rainy days, making it difficult to find a bike without full-size fenders.

Full Size Road Bike Fenders.

It’s no problem for me to get wet from the rain. A jacket with a hood or a raincoat is enough. But there is no way to escape the splashing of cars. You have to go around the puddles so as not to give the driver a reason to shower you with a wave. Practice shows that quite a few motorists think that when driving through a puddle, they create big problems for pedestrians and cyclists. In all other respects, what flies outside the wings is only a small part of the precipitation, the presence of which can be safely tolerated. In warm summer weather in the Netherlands, for example, they ride in rubber boots or sandals. This way you can dry faster in place.

Other problems with cycling in the rain:

Never cross the lane mark at an acute angle! This is the same as crossing the rails. Modern markings are made from bulk thermoplastic. When it rains, driving on it is equivalent to driving on ice. It is very dangerous to overtake cars on the road, change lanes and cross pedestrian crossings.

In Bilbao, specifically for this, at pedestrian crossings in the center of each lane, one strip of zebra without white paint is left so that motorcyclists and cyclists do not slip.

Brake before turning. Enter the corner safely and only then accelerate. Grip on wet asphalt is significantly worse, which can lead to slipping easily when cornering. Particular attention should be paid to large puddles. They can hide many holes, cracks and even storm drains.

In addition, the water in the puddles is a mixture of sand, fuel oil and earth. All this dirt instantly falls on the wheel rim. This mixture greatly wears out not only the brake pads, but also the rim itself. Leaving it to dry is not recommended. The faster you wash away dirt and sand at home, the easier it will be to clean.

Don’t forget the headlights. Visibility decreases when it rains and you may be overlooked.

And finally, despite all the above discomfort, driving in the rain is a lot of fun. I don’t know a single person who accidentally fell into the rain, and then did not tell enthusiastically how much pleasure and joy he received. In addition, if you are not far away, you will not have time to think about the rain, as you will already be there.

Choosing the right shoes

“The head is cold, the feet are warm”. such a saying is very relevant for any person, especially for those who decide to start cycling in winter. Cyclists’ shoes must meet certain requirements that are designed to protect the wearer from exposure to extreme cold.

The ideal option would be regular sports sneakers with insulation. However, you should not choose a model that is too low, such as sneakers, as this can lead to cold wind and precipitation getting inside. However, it is also not recommended to choose too high shoes (boots, ankle boots), because they simply will not give the cyclist the opportunity to move normally.

As for the socks, they should be as warm as possible. From the material it is best to give preference to natural wool or cotton. You can also wear special shoe covers, which are recognized to keep warm for a long time. Remember that if your feet get wet or cold during the trip, you risk getting very sick.

Benefits of winter skiing

Many people ask themselves the question: “How can you ride a bike in winter, because it is very cold ?!” To answer it in as much detail as possible, strongly with the benefits of winter skiing, which are listed in the list below.

  • Skill training in extreme conditions. Winter is a great time of the year to improve your endurance while cycling. Many athletes compare this activity with extreme driving, which brings not only pleasure, but also tangible health benefits.
  • On soft snow, rubber does not wear off as quickly. And this is really a weighty argument in favor of the person who loves to go on a bike ride under the snow. Many athletes complain that even imported rubber wears out quickly on the asphalt, and.
  • The winter road is noticeably changing. Asphalt is, of course, good, but it is much more pleasant to ride on snowy roads, enjoying the picturesque landscapes. All puddles and potholes are covered with ice, and the environment is noticeably transformed.

Special mention should be made of the fact that any winter frost is tolerated by a cyclist much easier than a summer thunderstorm or heat. If you get cold during the trip, it will be enough just to warm up in some room, but drying wet clothes is a very unpleasant task. Although it should be noted that a bicycle is a type of transport that will become relevant in any weather.

Gloves and glasses

Cycling clothing in winter should provide good protection from the cold and wind. However, taking care of the condition of your hands will be as important as any other part of the body, because they must be on the steering wheel all the time. If you constantly warm one hand in your jacket and operate the bike with the other, you risk losing your balance on a slippery road and getting injured. Therefore, be sure to purchase quality gloves that are suitable for cycling.

It is best to give preference to ski equipment, since it is not too bulky and perfectly protects the wearer’s hands from the cold. In addition, it is important that gloves do not interfere with the driver’s free access to the brake levers, otherwise this will lead to dire consequences. So immediately exclude those gloves that have unnecessary elements with them (“knuckles”, plaques, holes on the fingers, and so on).

READ  The chain on the bike fell off what to do

As for glasses, they are not always necessary. However, if you plan to go for a walk on a clear frosty day, when everything outside is white and white with snow, it is best to wear them. A motorcycle or ski option will do. The most important thing is that plastic is used as the material for the manufacture, and not metal.

Hat or helmet?

As mentioned earlier, cycling in winter involves the use of quality equipment that will protect the rider from cold and injury. When traveling in the winter season, it would be best to use two pieces of equipment at once. That is, first we put on a warm hat, and over it we pull on a helmet, which will protect the wearer from head injury. If you decide to wear protection without a warm headdress, then no one will condemn you, however, such actions can easily lead to frostbite of the ears, because plastic during frost may not be warmer than ordinary iron.

Banning cycling in winter: myth or reality?

No, this is not a typo. Some people are wondering why not cycling in winter? However, traffic rules allow you to move freely on your bike as long as you do not disturb other road users or pedestrians. Where, then, are such rumors born??

It’s all about the restrictions that are established by the traffic rules in case of icy conditions. During such weather, it is strictly forbidden to move on such vehicles, even if you have special studded tires installed. One awkward movement. and the cyclist will be under the wheels of a car, which simply does not have time to brake. Therefore, it is allowed to ride on ice only on special paths designed for cycling, or on sidewalks that are not located near roads.

What bike can you ride in winter? Absolutely on any. whether it is a sports unit or a regular bicycle from the USSR. However, for safety reasons, it is recommended to properly prepare the vehicle for driving on snow. For example, you can install studded tires or headlights on it (so that the bike is visible in a snowstorm), put fenders to protect it from flying snow, and so on. Remember that cycling in winter is considered a very dangerous activity, so only you are responsible for your life.!

Legislative side of the issue

Many people are worried about whether it is possible to ride a bike in winter, according to the law of the Russian Federation. Especially for our readers, we answer: yes, you can. However, there are many prohibitions in the traffic rules, with the help of which the traffic police can mislead an inexperienced cyclist and even issue a fine. To prevent this from happening, with the legislative side of this issue.

What is driving a bike according to traffic rules in winter? The same points that must be observed in the summer, plus a few prohibitions. For example, it is forbidden to drive on the road in heavy ice or ride in a heavy snowstorm without any identification signals (headlights, reflectors on clothes and bicycles). Of course, the sanctions for such offenses will be minimal (from a warning to a small fine), but you should still familiarize yourself with all the traffic rules before setting off.

What to choose pants?

Now you know if cycling is allowed in winter. However, for many fans of this event, the main enemy is not a traffic police officer, but a strong cold. In order not to get hypothermia of the body, we advise you to choose suitable clothing that will protect your body from the effects of frost and strong wind.

Pants are one of the main elements of any outfit. They should consist of several layers of dense material that is designed to protect their wearer from the harshest conditions. It is also recommended to use special thermal underwear that keeps the body warm for much longer. The ideal option would be cross-country ski pants. they are quite narrow and do not hinder movement, but at the same time they retain body heat for a long time.

Features of the choice of equipment

In order to ride a bike in winter without fear for your health, you need to take care of purchasing high-quality equipment that will protect your wearer not only from the cold, but also from unexpected falls on the ice. Cyclist clothing must comply with the following guidelines:

  • must be clearly visible to pedestrians and drivers;
  • must be protected from moisture and strong wind;
  • should not be too warm or cold;
  • should not hinder the movement of the driver;
  • should not reduce the viewing radius.

The third point should be given special attention, since about it the most questions arise. With too cold clothes, everything is more or less clear. this is fraught with hypothermia of the body and the transformation of a walk into indescribable discomfort. However, what is wrong with the fact that the clothes are very warm, because we are talking about trips in extreme cold? The fact is that if a cyclist sweats too much in the cold, his body will quickly cool down during stops, when the blood stops circulating. Therefore, sweating in winter is strongly discouraged.

As for the rest of the features for the choice of equipment, they are strictly individual. Someone loves expensive, but high-quality clothing, while for someone, the appearance of equipment is much more important. In the following sections, you will find more detailed information on the choice of each of the elements, as well as a few tips to help you prepare your clothes for your winter cycling trip.

Getting around the city in winter

In winter, the right edge of the carriageway, where cyclists are allowed to move, is covered with cleaned snow or an uneven layer of ice on most roads. After a snowfall, the lanes for car traffic narrow, and icy ruts are often formed on them. In this case, you only need to ride a bike on secondary roads. Busy highways can sometimes be bypassed along pedestrian paths, so as not to expose yourself to increased danger when passing with an endless stream of cars.

It is better not to drive on rolled snow porridge. it is hard to pedal on it, and the speed of movement is comparable to the speed of a pedestrian. Rolled snow, lumps of snow will be wiser to go around.

It is advisable not to ride on a narrow track without having a lot of experience in cycling. It is very difficult to get out of a rut, and an unsuccessful attempt to get out of it ends in a fall.

Another danger is that in winter the curbs are covered with snow, and it is rather difficult to determine where the curbstone is under the snow. When moving from the carriageway to the sidewalk, you need to slow down and raise the front wheel in advance, and it is better to stop and move the bike. Crashing into a high curb with acceleration can not only break the spokes or punch the camera, but also break the fork.

Advantages of Winter Cycling Compared to Summer

  • No insects in winter.
  • Precipitation in the form of snow in winter is incomparably more pleasant than rain in summer.
  • Frost is much easier to endure than the heat in summer. Winter cold is not felt with active pedaling.
  • The bike is much cleaner after riding on snow than after riding on mud and dusty roads.
  • In winter, there is less risk of puncturing the wheels, since thorns, nails, glass, cans are covered with snow.
  • Tires wear less on soft snow than on hard asphalt.
  • Cycling in deep snow is a real sport, unlike summer walks.
  • Winter skiing greatly enhances the cycling experience.

Features of cornering

Always turn over a wide radius on a slippery road to avoid over-leaning the bike. When cornering, transferring power to the rear wheel, you stabilize the trajectory of movement, eliminating skidding. as with any rear-wheel drive vehicle. When turning, it is advisable to pedal, similar to pressing the accelerator pedal of a car with rear wheel drive or rotating the throttle handle on a motorcycle.

When making a turn, it is dangerous to brake, but you need to reduce the speed in a straight line in advance, before entering a turn.

It will not be possible to make a sharp turn in deep snow. the tire tread will not have time to properly hook onto a dense base, and the wheel will immediately skid. Also, you should not run into snowballs or areas with snow porridge when cornering.

Winter driving features

The road in winter changes beyond recognition An asphalt road, on which there was not a single hole in the summer, can be covered with an uneven ice crust in winter. Dirt paths with several puddles, in winter most often, becomes an impassable road with deep ruts. It is advisable for winter riding to replace the tires on the bicycle with others with a higher and wider tread. Studded tires are useful only for driving on clear ice, somewhere on frozen rivers or lakes.

On the surface of snow and ice crystals there is a film of water several hundred molecules thick. As the temperature drops, the water on the ice surface becomes more viscous, and the adhesion to the ice and packed snow becomes slightly higher. As the contact time with snow and ice decreases, less heat is transferred to them from the tire, and the water film on the surface spreads less. The colder it is outside and the higher the straight line speed, the better the grip on the icy road.

In winter, it gets dark very early and most often you have to drive in twilight and darkness. Therefore, it is very important to equip the bike with a headlight, necessarily, a rear light and additional reflectors.

Visibility on the roads is severely impaired in winter. as most often the days are cloudy, there is a little snow, there is also fog. For your safety, you must wear bright clothes, and best of all with reflective elements.

The choice of clothing for a winter cycling trip should be considered carefully. You need to dress in three layers: a knitted or woolen tracksuit, a thick synthetic tracksuit, a jacket with a hood that is not blown from the front and breathable on the back. Wear thin synthetic and thick woolen socks on your feet, you can put on sneakers. On your hands, also in layers, put on first thin fleece or woolen gloves, and then leather gloves or mittens. Put a knitted woolen hat or fleece balaclava over your head, and put a hood on top.

Grease becomes more viscous at low temperatures. Air-oil and spring-oil dampers become more rigid. The cables in casings with solidified lubricant, and especially with frozen water, move with great effort, and it becomes difficult to change gears, to press the rear brake. The grease is quickly squeezed out of the bearings in the bushings, carriage, steering column. Cured chain lubricant mixed with adhered snow is removed very quickly.

Plastic becomes brittle in the cold. Impacts can break the fasteners of the bike computer, flashlight, reflectors. Elastomer shock absorber forks harden in the cold and stop firing.

Gas pressure in sealed containers drops with decreasing temperature. If you roll your bike out of a heated room into the cold, then the tire pressure will undoubtedly decrease. The rigidity of the air-oil fork decreases in the cold, therefore, it is recommended to pump a little air into its shock absorbers before going out into the street.

READ  Switching speeds on a bike how to use it correctly

High humidity in winter Steel and chrome-molybdenum frames, chrome fenders, spokes, derailleurs and other metal parts of bicycles are prone to corrosion in winter, especially when in contact with salt water. After each ride, use a soft, long-bristled brush to brush snow and water off the bike and dry it with a large cloth. Bolts, nuts, springs in switches, all threaded and contact connections must be coated with a penetrating lubricant from a can.

Walks in the woods

It is not at all more difficult to move on a thin, loose layer of snow than on a layer of fallen leaves. The grip of a bicycle tire on a snow-covered forest path is no worse than on a dirt road after a summer rain.

When climbing a hill covered with snow, you need to press on the pedals while standing on them, while moving the body either to the handlebars or to the saddle, to maintain the stability of the bike. Distributes the center of gravity well and keeps the bike stable.

Slowing down, turning, going downhill on snow is as doable as on sand or softened ground after rain. You need to be a little more careful when making turns near trees and holes, since under the snow there can be quite thick branches, heaps of leaves and dry grass, against which the front wheel will rest and it will immediately be brought.

Riding on well-groomed forest roads is not only easy, but very pleasant. the wheels roll well on a hard surface, the bike is easy to operate, and all that remains is to enjoy the ride.

Winter braking

In winter, when braking, the main problem is that there is no way to stop urgently if you need to avoid a collision with a car, a pedestrian or a pit on the way.

On a straight section, you can press on both brakes, but first you need to put pressure on the rear one, and then, with less force, press the front brake lever.

On a descent or during a sharp “police” turn in the snow, only the rear brake will be useful. in these cases it works as a trajectory stabilizer. On the descent, the front brake can be connected in addition to the rear one, but only if there is confidence in the reliability of the grip of the wheels.

The braking method that imitates the work of ABS on cars and motorcycles, when you press the brake levers intermittently: pressed. released, with a high frequency, proved to be quite effective in terms of efficiency. Wheels when impulsively gripped by pads do not have time to lock, and skid does not occur.

Another important note is that if you cycle through deep snow or break through snow drifts, the snow will fall on the brake track of the rim or brake disc. After that, even with a strong push on the levers, the brakes will work very poorly, because a water film from the melted snow forms between the rim and the pads or the brake disc and the pads. It is very important to “dry” the brake pads after driving through snowy areas or puddles by slowly applying the brakes until they start to work.

Features of cycling in winter

Residents of Denmark, Norway, Sweden actively travel by bicycles both in summer and winter. Citizens of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia take their children to school on a bicycle in winter and use it to get to work every day. Love for the bike and hardening in harsh weather conditions has allowed many residents of these countries to become recognized athletes.

In winter, in Holland and China, neither snow nor cold prevents thousands of people from cycling. They just got used to driving light two-wheeled vehicles all year round and do not understand how they can do without it. In Russia and Ukraine, you can also successfully ride a bike in winter. After all, cycling in winter can be fun.

Overcoming ice covered areas

The rules of ice riding have long been written and have been successfully applied by many generations of cyclists.

  • Can’t turn while sitting on the bike.
  • Do not pedal while standing on them.
  • You can’t turn your head.
  • You can’t slow down until you go through the ice.

With tires with a high and wide tread, you can confidently ride on level ice, especially if its surface is rough and covered with frozen snowflakes. If the surface of the ice is covered with bumps and ruts, then it will be convenient to ride only on studded tires.

It is recommended to lower the pressure in tires, even in studded ones, for driving on ice. With an increase in the contact area with the road, although rolling resistance increases, but the grip of the tire on ice is significantly improved.

The conclusion is simple and specific. it is not difficult to ride a bike in winter, especially if both the bike itself and its owner are ready for it.

Rain bike

If the forecast shows that things are going to be bad in the coming days, and you need to ride, then first of all equip your bike with wings. It often happens that the rain is not very strong, and it does not so much water from above as it splashes from below, from the wheels of your bike. Ideally, it’s a good idea to have a separate bad weather bike with full fenders with mudguards.

Do not forget that in cloudy weather your visibility on the road is sharply reduced, so I advise you to turn on the rear and front lights on your bike even during the day.

When riding in the rain, all the mechanics of your bike require special attention, the chain must be lubricated every day, regardless of the mileage. At the end of the “rainy season” it will not hurt to look into all the places with bearings (steering column, bushings, bottom bracket, pedals). For prophylaxis, you can clean the cables and grease the switch spring with grease.

Flight information

Nowadays, the weather forecast works quite accurately, especially with regard to precipitation. in the limit of one day, predictions come true with a high probability. Knowing what the weather is waiting for you, you can adjust the departure time, or at least put on a waterproof jacket.

I currently use two good weather sites. yr.no, run by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, and ventusky.com. The last site gives a detailed model of the movement of air masses, this allows you to understand whether a cyclone is approaching your area or is it just the wind brought rain clouds.

The last frontier. rain clothes

Let’s start with the main protection from the rain. the jacket. To be honest, I could not find a cycling jacket for myself for riding in rainy weather, so that on the one hand it would not get wet for a long time and let in a large amount of steam, as I sweat a lot, and on the other hand, it would be worth sane money.

Since riding in the rain is not a priority for me, and I can easily cancel the ride if there is no gap in front, so I never bought an expensive membrane jacket, which, according to advertising statements, can stay dry for long hours. A compromise option with an inexpensive 10000/10000 membrane (moisture protection / vapor permeability) is enough for me to ride with relative comfort for an hour or two in light rain.

I can advise this option. proven jacket, comfortable fit, zip vents, mesh inner lining, taped seams.

Pants are more difficult, regular cycling trousers are most often sold with minimal or no moisture protection. Therefore, it may be a smarter move to buy separate loose-fitting rain top pants that are worn over skin-tight cycling shorts. For example, here’s an option. it’s not cheap, but the manufacturer claims 20,000/7000 water resistance, which is pretty good.

The disadvantage of these pants is that they are only appropriate when driving in the rain. to put on just in case and ride in them will be hot, especially when it comes to the summer season. However, in the fall season, such protection will come in handy.

Put on rain shoe covers on your feet, here I can not even recommend anything, they are not very expensive and tear very quickly, at least for me.

In the rain, I can still recommend to have a bike with transparent glasses, if the rain intensifies, it is better to protect your eyes from oncoming drops.

To summarize, the most important piece of rainwear is the jacket. Until the body is wet, you can ride and not experience much discomfort. Even if your thighs are wet, you will not freeze right away. the muscles warm themselves during work. It is advisable to keep your feet warm by putting on shoe covers.

Tell us in the comments what you wear if you have to ride a bike in rainy weather, and most importantly, what motivates you to do so! For me personally, rain is the biggest stop factor, even if there are waterproof clothing, I will most likely give up the trip.
