How to lubricate a bicycle chain
Apply light lubricant to each roller of the chain and then wipe dry the outside of the remaining substance. In motion, part of the lubricant gets out in any case. In this case, use a stiff brush to clean the chains, sprockets and rollers. Choose an accessory with medium bristles. Special brushes are available for easy penetration of bristles into hard-to-reach areas.
How to clean a bicycle chain if it is in disrepair, one brush may not be enough. Use a dedicated transmission cleaner (grease solvent). Its formula is specially designed to quickly remove caked grease mixed with dirt.
Sometimes cleaning the chain is not enough to remove all contamination, especially if the links are clogged with a mixture of grease, dirt, sand. In such situations, you need to know how to wash your bike chain. Use a chain hook with Multiple brushes. this device will greatly simplify the maintenance of the transmission.
How and what you can and should lubricate the bicycle chain
How to lubricate a bicycle chain so that the lubricant retains its properties for a long time and provides reliable protection for the part?
The quality of the lubricant directly affects not only the operation of the entire transmission system, but also its service life. To select a lubricant, it is important to understand exactly how this material differs from the substances used to process the second parts.
In motion, the chain constantly rubs the rollers into the stars. Such friction does not lead to significant changes, but internal friction can cause more damage to the mechanism. The chain includes many links, each of which contains 4 elements. plates (2 pcs.), Pin, roller.
To determine the place that most requires processing, you should understand which of the elements is subject to the greatest wear.
There is friction between the pins and the outer plates, because These elements are very tightly planted. The greatest friction occurs between the pins and the inner plates. The plates create grooves in the pin, which leads to its rapid depletion. As a result, the rollers do not join the teeth of the stars, which leads to their wear. The rollers of the rear derailleur, which are most often made of plastic, are not less affected. This leads to a decrease in the coordination of gear shifting, the appearance of Clicks, noise, chain slippage. What kind of oil is allowed to lubricate the bicycle chain to avoid unpleasant consequences?
For effective action, the lubricant must enter the interior of the system and remain there. In this case, the substance must have several more important properties:
- NO splashing out when driving;
- DO NOT wash off with water;
- DO NOT dry out.
If you treat the outer part of the chain instead of the inner one, the effect will be exactly the opposite. the thick fluid will collect all the dust and dirt from the roads, further polluting the transmission. So, rule # 1 for every cyclist is that the chain must be dry and clean on the outside and well processed on the inside.
Chain care: features
The bike drivetrain should shine. There should be no dirt or excess grease on it. Any moisture will become a prerequisite for the rapid appearance of new contaminants. Cleans the transmission, preferably every 100 km in good weather. How often do you lubricate the bike chain? It is all necessary to do this with every cleaning. Use a lubricant when the characteristic dry rustle appears.
Why Clean Lubricate Bicycle Chain
The longevity and health of your bike is largely up to you. Even the most advanced transport cannot take care of itself and the owner’s task is to provide timely care for the most important parts of the iron horse. Do I need to clean the transmission? It is enough to look at the state of the chain, cassette, led system, the owner of which considers this process unnecessary. Black spots, Drip, a thick layer of an incomprehensible mass, which contains dust, dirt, sand, oil, plant elements and much more, and not amenable to recognition. In this favorable environment, “steel gnaws”. bacteria that stimulate the appearance of corrosion and corrode metal, multiply very quickly. When asked whether it is necessary to lubricate the bicycle chain, the answer is unequivocal. it is necessary, moreover, first it should be cleaned.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain if it’s new
When assembling the chain at the factory, the manufacturer uses a very thick paste, the consumption of which is enough for 300-400 km of rides, after which the owner will have to cope with the task on his own. It is difficult to apply the same thick lubricant, so more liquid alternatives and sprays are used in everyday life.
After buying a bike, before the first ride, wipe off any traces of grease that have appeared on the outside. Use a soft cloth. There is no need to remove grease inside the chain! A simple procedure will not take much time, but will allow you to avoid serious pollution and damage to the chain.
What you can not lubricate the bike chain
The main mistake of the BIKER is the use of WD-40 grease and analogues. This aerosol is NOT a lubricant and has a completely different principle of operation. It is used to dissolve old grease (unblocking too contaminated and acidified compounds). Use a chain cleaner, not as a lubricant. The amount of oil in its composition is not enough to perform the necessary functions.
Engine oil will NOT be useful for the chain and the bike as a whole. This substance is designed for use in a closed atmosphere at elevated temperatures, which in no way can be applied to the transmission of a bicycle.
You should NOT look for an alternative. the consumption of special bicycle chain oil is minimal. A small jar will last for many years. Why replace it with unsuitable alternatives?
Can I lubricate my bike chain with grease? Comments, as well as lithol, sunflower oil and aromatic oils. Buy a product designed to work with bicycle parts.
Features of the choice of grease
Of all the parts of a bicycle transmission, only the chain needs lubrication. Do not lubricate the stars! What should be the lubricant? Easily penetrated the rollers, and does not flow out, does not dissolve in water, DO NOT dry for a long time. The lubricant does not have to be washed off in the rain or other precipitation, when traveling through puddles. As an analogue of bicycle oil, you can use motorcycle lubricant. It will not spatter at high speeds, but it is more expensive and sold in larger packs. Such a purchase is not always advisable.
All bicycle lubricants can be divided into 2 groups:
- For dry weather (Dry). Teflon-containing substance, has dustproof properties, protects the chain from moisture penetration. This grease is considered universal. Even if you get into the rain, upon arrival home, it is enough to clean the chain, wipe it, lubricate it, wipe it again.
- For high humidity conditions (Wet). It is produced on the basis of synthetic oils, in some cases it contains paraffin. The formula contains a large amount of silicone, due to which it perfectly protects against moisture, but is not suitable for use in dry conditions due to the increased fat content. This option is the optimal solution to the question. how to lubricate the bicycle chain in winter and autumn.
There are also special formulas with additives on sale. For example, ceramic forms a reinforced layer on the parts, which increases the strength and extends the service life of the chain.
Thickened formulas provide factory lubrication effects. Such substances are initially fluid, easily penetrate into the inner parts of the chain, after which the solvent evaporates from them and the paste thickens. The main thing is to wipe off the remaining grease from the outside in time.
Bicycle grease is sold in different packages. Packing in the form of a spray is not the most convenient option. The aerosol is uneconomical, its consumption is increased, moreover, by spraying it is easy to smear with grease those parts of the transmission that DO NOT need lubrication, as well as the rim, frame, spokes, brakes.
It is much more convenient to use a can or aerosol with a special tip. Grease can be applied to each roller without overshooting or causing the need for additional cleaning of the bike.
How to lubricate a bike chain
Transmission care. This is what you most often need to do with your bike if you want it to last long and look great. But there are important tricks here.
Cleanliness is the key to health! This expression is true not only for organisms, but also for bicycle transmission. A terrible dream of your bike. black (like night) cassette, chain and system, completely plastered over “plasticine” from old grease, dust and poplar fluff.?
In such a favorable environment, “steel cutters” usually start. Evil microbes that quietly devour stars, chains and rollers. :).
A well maintained transmission should look “brilliantly”.
This is the most important and frequent thing you will do with your bike. Ideally, after every 100 km of travel in dry weather, give the transmission 3-5 minutes of time to clean, and lubricate it only when I hear the rustle of a dry chain when driving.
Chain lubrication. One of the most important steps in bike care. Here is the used oil (lubricant) directly depends Not only on the quality of the transmission, but also the durability of the chain and sprockets on your bike. That is why today I will tell you how and with what you need to lubricate the chain, and how you should not lubricate it. How is bicycle chain lubricant different from other oils? The bike chain in motion, with its rollers constantly rubs into the stars, as well as into the rear derailleur rollers. Chain roller friction (external friction). Do not lead to “stretching” (increase in length) of the chain. The most intense friction occurs just inside the chain itself. Each link consists of four parts (2 plates, pin and roller). There are about 110 such links in the chain.
With its rollers, the new chain slides precisely into the teeth of the new cassette. To understand where the lubricant is most needed in the chain, you need to understand what exactly is wearing out in it. Please note that the pins are firmly seated in the holes of the outer plates, which means there is friction between them. There is friction between the inner link plates and the pins. It is here that the pin is developed, the inner plates rub the grooves in it, which leads to the lengthening of the chain (they say: “the chain is stretched”). As a result, the rollers no longer hit the sprocket teeth so accurately and wear them out. Rear derailleur rollers, usually made of plastic, also suffer. In addition, the clarity of gear changes is reduced, noise, clicks, chain slip and other undesirable phenomena occur. Thus, the most unwanted wear on the chain does not occur outside, but inside it.
The task of any chain lubricant is to penetrate inside, and stay there as long as possible: do not dry out, and do not wash out with water, do not spray when the chain moves. But on the outside, the lubricant does more harm than good, because. Combined with dust, it turns into an abrasive paste that does its job perfectly.
The chain must be kept dry on the outside and lubricated on the inside.
After you have added liquid (!) Lubricant to each roller, you need to wipe the chain dry with a soft cloth. When rolling, some of the lubricant still flows out and accumulates dust, so the chain, stars and rollers must be cleaned with a medium-length hard-bristled brush. It is best to use special handy brushes for this, which can clean hard-to-reach places, for example, derailleur rollers and the gap between the stars.
Cleaned regularly, your transmission will not only look great, it will perform well and last much longer.
To normalize the black “launched” transmission, a brush alone will not be enough, so you will need a chain cleaner. Also called “digreser” (grease remover, from the word de-greaser). This composition washes well stubborn grease with dirt. At worst, WD-40 will help out, but special cleaners work better. If a lot of sand or dirt gets into the chain (for example, after a serious “mud “), then the brushes are of little help: the chain should be washed. For this purpose it is better than a special chain wash, and not come up with. It allows you to gently wash the bike chain even in the apartment.
What to do with a new chain.
The new chain is lubricated when the links are being assembled at the factory with a thick but very sticky lubricant. It will be enough for 300-400 km of driving, after which it will be difficult to put thick grease in the rollers.
Before the first ride, wipe off the sticky lubricant from the new chain with a soft cloth slightly moistened with solvent. Do NOT wash out factory grease from the inside!
If you don’t wipe off the new chain, then very quickly the factory sticky grease will turn your transmission into black iron. By the way, for some reason the sellers are not talking about this, but this simple procedure will allow you to more easily maintain the transmission in a brilliant form (in every sense). Now let’s analyze the chain lubricants.
How not to lubricate the chain.
One of the most common mistakes. This is a chain lubrication with WD-40 aerosol and its analogues.
WD-40. It is a highly penetrating liquid designed primarily to unblock sour compounds and displace moisture. Yes, it contains a small amount of oil, but in essence WD-40 is “carbonated kerosene”, but not a lubricant. It is nevertheless good to use “Vedashka”, Anyway (XADO) and other analogs for dissolving old grease if you want to clean well “Running” transmission elements. In this case, it is necessary to spray the parts abundantly with a spray, placing a rag so that the composition does not fall on the other parts, and wait a little. After that, clean with a brush, wipe dry and lubricate with a special liquid chain lubricant (about it below).
Engine oil as a chain lubricant is already better, but for the time being it is a “four”. As the name suggests, this oil must work in motors, in a closed environment at high temperatures. Its outstanding motor properties are not required at all in bicycles. Conversely, engine oil is completely “does not promise ”penetrated well into the rollers, DO NOT dry for a long time, and do not wash off and weakly attract dust. The same can be said about oil for sewing machines, as well as transformer, motorcycle, olive, massage and aromatic oils.)) With excellent bicycle oils, it makes no sense to drip any other oil into the chain and think, “what will happen “.
I bought a jar of excellent bicycle chain oil for 100-200 UAH, you will present it to your grandchildren. Does it make sense to look for an alternative?
Only the chain should be lubricated in the bicycle transmission, and in no case should the stars.
As mentioned above, the following qualities are important in bicycle chain lubricant:
- He penetrated thes well;
- To hold there for a long time, and not to dry out and NOT to flow out;
- Attract as little dust as possible;
- Resist being washed away by rain.
In principle, motorcycle chain oil will work for us, but it should also NOT spray out of the rollers when the chain rotates at high speed. Therefore, motorcycle oil is more expensive, and there is more packaging in it. Bicycle chain lubricants are divided into two main types.
Dry grease. They are often made with Teflon and are designed for use in dry or not very humid conditions. It has a good dustproof effect due to the large amount of Teflon in the composition. Protects the chain well from short-term moisture ingress. If you get caught in the rain, this smear will protect the chain from corrosion, but as soon as you get home it is better to clean the transmission, wipe dry, lubricate the chain and wipe dry again. According to many mechanics, dry weather grease is versatile and can be recommended as an “everyday oil”.
Wet and wet lubricant (Wet). It is made on the basis of synthetic silicone oils, sometimes with the addition of paraffin. The lubricant protects the chain very well against direct and prolonged exposure to moisture. Due to the high content of silicone, it works well in wet and dirty conditions, but is categorically not suitable for use in dry weather due to the high fat content of the composition. We recommend using this type of lubricant on rainy autumn days, early spring, when participating in marathons in bad weather, and especially in winter.
Greases with ceramics deserve special attention. According to the manufacturers, they create a ceramic layer of increased strength on the rubbing parts, and their service life.
Greases with thickeners are also interesting. When grease is applied to the roller, it is very fluid, after which the solvent evaporates from it and becomes thick. Thus, it stays inside longer. When lubricating, it is important to wipe off the lubricant on the outside of the chain in time.
The main types of grease packaging. Tipped bottle and aerosol can. Despite the seeming primitiveness of the bottle, I still recommend it. With it, I apply lubricant directly to each roller, and it takes up less space in the backpack. An aerosol can be taken for a workshop where you need to quickly lubricate more than one chain a day. Due to spraying, a lot of lubricant is sprayed “by”, the consumption increases. Also, if you are not used to the spray, it is easy to stain the rims, spokes, frame, brake rotors.
I bought a jar of excellent bike chain oil for 100-200 UAH, you will present it to your grandchildren. Does it make sense to look for an alternative?
To sum up, I advise you not to skimp on lubrication and choose a special oil for bicycle chains. It takes into account all the nuances of the open bicycle transmission. I recommend choosing a bottle with a spout. If you choose a spray, be sure to put a rag under the stream so that the grease does not get where it should not. You only need to lubricate the chain, and only inside the rollers, only when you begin to hear the “dry” rustle of the chain while driving. After lubrication, I wipe the chain dry. Clean the chain, stars, rollers with a brush, do not allow dirt, sand, dust to accumulate on them.
How to lubricate a bike?
There are a huge number of names of various lubricants and oils. They are all great for bike care:
- Specialty liquid oils. This category is suitable for all types of chains, suspension systems and brakes. They completely cover all areas to be worked and ensure long-term smooth operation of bicycle parts.
- Aerosols with two components. They are great for a variety of derailleurs, thread lubrication and wire rope lubrication. Aerosols are designed in such a way that when spraying the oil they contain, even the most inaccessible places are covered, which is an undoubted advantage in the processing of bicycle parts. In addition, some contain kerosene. It is also a great helper in separating damaged parts. These include: “LM40” and “LM47”.
- Lubricating greases. They are used to lubricate and seal all types of joints.
- Lubricants with m calcium. This type belongs to the group of greases. They are also designed to lubricate all kinds of joints and assemblies. These include: “Solidol”, “Uniol” and so on. The advantage of using this type of lubricant is that calcium is able to stay on the surface of parts for quite a long time and, at the same time, provide them with excellent performance.
- Lithium greases. Another type of grease. These include: “Litol-24”, “FIOL” and so on.
All these oils and greases can quickly and thoroughly lubricate all parts of the bike. In addition, they keep the entire undercarriage in perfect order for a long time.
Bicycle chain maintenance
Since the chain is the most important part of the entire bike, it requires the most detailed and thorough care.
What needs to be lubricated in the bike?
In order for the bike to serve its owner as long as possible, it is necessary to periodically lubricate all its parts. The most important and first in line is the chassis. that is, all the parts that ensure the movement of the bicycle, combined into one system. These include:
- Chain. This detail is one of the main ones later, which ensures the movement of the bike. That is why the entire technical condition of this transport depends on the quality and quantity of lubricant applied to it. The first signal that the chain is out of order is its tinkling. You should also take into account such a moment as the wear of this part. It needs to be changed as often as possible. about every 1500 kilometers of cycling.
- Wasps of the brake system. The entire braking system is responsible for driving safety and stopping the bike in time.
- Roller wheels for chain tensioning. They help to keep the chain perfectly tight and resist loosening.
- Speed shifter. It consists of two parts: front and rear. The first is responsible for shifting gears, and the second is for gradually increasing speed. In order for these actions to occur flawlessly, constant lubrication and proper care of these parts is required.
- Shift and brake cables. Since neither the brake nor the switch can transmit commands through the air, each bicycle has special cables that carry two functions: combining the braking parts and the switch with each other and transmitting signals that induce action. To lubricate them, you need to drip a little oil near the entrance and exit of each cable and press a little on the pedals and switches.
- Carriage assembly. The carriage is a small bushing that contains bearings and special cups. This device is responsible for the pedals. The bearings help them to twist easily, and the cups keep the pedals from rolling and falling out. Thus, we lubricate the carriage, you ensure the safety of movement.
- Wheel bearings. They help the wheels move and keep the wheel from wobbling while driving. They also need constant lubrication.
- Damping system. She is responsible for the softness of the ride. In addition, in the presence of various obstacles, shock absorbers soften wheel impact and resist bike breakdown. The owner is required to lubricate the special front fork and rear shock absorber.
Thus, if the owner Lubricates everything in advance, then there will be no problems with the bike. He will not watch for a long time.
And now, finally, it happened! The bike was bought and even run in. And here a new problem arises: the pedals and all parts of the bike begin to creak, and the chain is slightly rusty. What should be done? The answer is simple: use a lubricant.
How to lubricate a bicycle fork?
Bicycle fork lubrication
The suspension forks on bicycles from different manufacturers are completely different from each other. However, the approximate list of actions for all surebets is almost the same. with the exception of some peculiarities. Here’s this fork cleaning plan:
- It is necessary to clean the fork of any debris, then remove the wheel.
- From the rods. the rods into which the forks are inserted. Unscrew the bolts. Then you need to remove the regulator.
- Then you should remove the brake system, and then pull the pants out of the bike.
- The next step: wipe the rods from grease and remove the stopper rings from the oil seals.
- Then you need to wipe the pants with a fork from the inside.
- Grease is applied to the oil seals, and a little oil is poured into each leg. Use, best of all, oils with m grease.
- Then everything is assembled the same way as it was sorted out.
- The inside of the fork is lubricated with an aerosol. Everything is ready.
How to lubricate shock absorbers on a bicycle?
The principle of disassembling the shock absorber was described above. After that, there is only one thing left to add: in case of rainy weather, cleaning and lubrication of the shock absorbers should be carried out daily. In the second cases. weekly. Cleaning is done with soapy water and a brush and lubricated with aerosol and oil.
The principle of operation of the machine for cleaning the chain (chain)
How the chain cleaner works.
The main and, probably, the key advantage of the chain cleaner is the ability to take care of the chain, and not remove it from the bicycle. To get started, it is enough to put the chain inside the machine, pre-filled with flushing liquid to the middle of the rollers (about 50 ml).
Then you should smoothly rotate the pedals, while carefully holding both the machine and the bike itself. In order not to spill the used liquid on the floor or drip grease, protect the floor covering with rags or newspapers: if weather conditions allow, then it is advisable to perform the procedure outdoors. this will relieve both stains and the strong smell of cleaning liquids. After the chain is cleaned of dirt, it is easy to lubricate it: for this, it is enough to replace the flushing fluid in the machine with lubricant.
The principle of operation of the machine is extremely simple, it is available to every bicycle owner, regardless of age and knowledge. Therefore, the presence of such a device can be considered justified, especially in the absence of experience in self-care and repair of bikes.
Hybrid bike chain lubricant
- Manufactured using a unique hybrid technology based on the principle of synergy between different materials.
- Has a high penetrating power, due to which the grease gets on the inner surfaces of the hinges.
- After evaporation of solvents, the high-viscosity oil reliably holds the grease in the friction zone.
- Solid lubricants form a thin layer that prevents dust from entering the chain.
- Convenient aerosol can with a tube nozzle allows for even application of material over the entire surface.
It is necessary to select the correct lubricants. This is the lubricant recommended by experts:
These are the most popular and effective lubricants to help keep your bike chain running smoothly.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain?
How to lubricate a bicycle chain at home?
A proven method: it is cooked in solid oil or lithol. Previously, when such an assortment of lubricants was NOT present on the shelves, a trouble-free technique was used.
In a metal container, thick oil was heated (preferably in a water bath). The chain was immersed in “boiling water” and boiled there for up to half an hour. During this time, the slurry penetrated into the thinnest gaps between the link plates.
Seasoned Cyclist Tips.
After removing and hardening the grease, all excess was removed from the surface with a clean cloth. Naturally, this method did NOT guarantee against traces of oil on the legs (when touched), but from the point of view of the quality of processing. the option competes with expensive specialized formulations.
Applying these lubricants in a thick form (at normal temperature) is pointless. It will not penetrate critical points: bushings, gaps between plates.
But to the question: “Is it possible to lubricate the bicycle chain with engine oil?”, The answer is negative. Such a lubricant can only work under sterile crankcase conditions.
When water gets in, it turns into an emulsion, and road dust will completely make an abrasive paste out of it. Engine oil is NOT compatible with bike mechanics at all.
How to find a lubricant for your bike chain.
Bicycle chain lubricant. correct selection and application
Everyone knows the saying: “Do you like to ride, love to carry sledges!” This rule applies to any technique that we use. For example: even a device as simple as a bicycle needs periodic maintenance.
Tightening bolts, chain tensioner, tire inflation. performed as needed. But there are also nodes for regular routine maintenance: chain and sprockets.
Bicycle chain lubricant provides a smooth ride, Reduces wear and strain on the legs. In addition, the chain on a bicycle is subject to the negative influence of weather factors (rain, snow), as well as the abrasive effect of road dust.
In fact, this technique is more about conservation than lubrication. Nevertheless, the anti-friction properties of paraffin are so high that the chains treated with it last much longer.
The solid composition is melted in a water bath, a bicycle chain is placed in it, the brew is “prepared” at least an hour. Paraffin coats the outer part and penetrates into the spaces between the links.
The chain is hot removed and hung vertically. Excess paraffin flows down on the surface and leaves the thinnest protective layer.
The only drawback is that this treatment is short-lived (especially in winter), so it should be repeated every 50 km. The problem is compensated by the penny cost of the material.
Naturally, thorough rinsing is required prior to the initial application. Re-application can be done immediately. Practically NO debris and moisture get inside.
Chain drive device
Despite the seeming simplicity of the design, it consists of many elements:
- Outer and inner plates that are subject to tensile forces. At the interface, the metal is constantly rubbing against each other.
- The rollers maintain the required distance between the plates, friction also occurs at the end.
- The bushings (glasses) act as plain bearings: of course, you cannot do without lubrication.
- The pins (so-called pins) are constantly rotating. Here is the quality (and availability) of lubricants depends on their durability.
Can I lubricate my bike chain with silicone grease?
If you are a supporter of modern materials, and you are not embarrassed by the high cost, consider a few examples of “advanced” formulations for bike bikers.
Silicone materials. They are full-fledged antifriction compounds that reduce not only friction, but also the noise of the drive.
Another positive property is that a thin layer of silicone does NOT stain clothes. Of course, no water (in the form of drops) gets into the chain. However, traveling through puddles leads to complete washing away after 20-50 km. Average cost, you can afford to use it after every difficult trip.
- Teflon bicycle chain lubricant is an expensive drug.
In addition, it dries for a long time after application, this must be taken into account if you want to use it on a long journey. If the layer is large enough, rain or snow is not terrible. However, the service life of such trains is NOT too long: no more than 100 km. The cleanliness of the clothes is guaranteed (after drying).
- Graphite compositions have practically no drawbacks. Except that you can get dirty in them.
Excellent adhesion, relative moisture resistance, inability to pick up road dust. And, of course, anti-friction properties, Which the newfangled silicone with Teflon never dreamed of. The price is quite affordable, at the same level as Litol.
If you have NOT decided what kind of lubricant to lubricate the chain on a bicycle, we offer a popular method available to everyone.
Sunflower oil option
For cleaning, special penetrating compounds are used, but ordinary kerosene or a solvent can be used. Sometimes the question is asked: “can a bicycle chain be lubricated with sunflower oil?” You cannot lubricate, but you can rinse.
More precisely, it is necessary to prepare a mixture of water, detergent and any oil, including sunflower oil. Such a composition washes away dirt particles well between the link plates. Of course, after applying water, the links are thoroughly dried, after which the bicycle chain is lubricated.
The gear shift is placed in a position where the tension is minimal. The roller of the gearshift mechanism is lowered into a glass of liquid, and several turns of the pedal sprocket are made. Then we lubricate the chain with oil, which in a small amount should be in the stock of every traveler.
Of course, this is NOT a complete service. But it will help NOT to spoil the drive after mud baths, far from civilization. You can argue as much as you like which lubricant is better, but in the described situation, ordinary lithol or solid oil is suitable. Moreover, some 20-30 years ago, nothing else was used.
How and how to lubricate the chain on a bicycle?
As a rule, special formulations are used, or grease resistant to “water procedures”. We will talk about this later, first we will analyze the order of work.
How often should you lubricate your bike chain??
Chain maintenance intervals are NOT directly related to timing. The nodes wear out depending on the mileage, as well as the intensity of use.
For example, if you spend most of your run on a flat track, you can increase the distance. And if the bike is used on off-road or rough terrain with frequent ups. the service interval is reduced.
For normal operating conditions, the range from grease to grease is 100-150 km. In severe conditions, or when operating in sports mode, it will be correct to lubricate the chain after 50-70 km.
In addition, the need to apply an antifriction compound can be determined visually:
- On the links, grease residues in the form of lumps are visible, the layer is uneven, there are traces of rust;
- If you loop the chain and set it vertically (3-4 links), it locks in that position (well-oiled links will fall down)
- The links creak, when winding on the chain they linger at the top point.
And, of course, the chain drive needs to be serviced after riding in rain, mud, and snow.
Chain cleaning methods
Before lubricating the bike chain, it must be cleaned of dirt and old oil. To do this, you can use a special “machine”, with which cleaning is done anywhere, even in the forest or on the highway.
If this is not done, even the highest quality composition of the new oil will instantly mix with the remnants of moisture and abrasive dirt.
If you are NOT a supporter of “advanced” technologies, you can use the artisanal method. The rinsing tray is made from a plastic bottle in a few minutes.
And finally, the old Dedovsk method, proven for decades. True, you will have to dismantle the chain using a split lock.
It is a link equipped with elongated pins and fixing with a leaf spring. Outer plates with eccentric pin holes are used on modern products.
Once removed, you can immerse the chain in a plastic bottle filled with detergents (previously used exclusively with kerosene). Then the “cocktail” is shaken vigorously like a shaker.
All contaminants are removed mechanically, remaining in the liquid. The process is repeated several times, with a change of washing liquid.
Of course, no one canceled the bath and the toothbrush. Moreover, you need to wash the bike chain and sprocket.
Here you need to remove the chain and rinse it in any organic solvent (gasoline, kerosene or white spirit). Easy to rinse in a bottle, jar or low-rise dish.
How are the methods combined? Alternate 3-4 quick washes with one major one and the cycle chain will serve the resource.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain
Let’s paint a portrait of the perfect bike lubricant:
- DOES NOT attract dust.
- Keeps the chain clean.
- Penetrates into the smallest crevices without flowing out of them at the same time.
- NOT flush out with water jet.
There is such a composition in nature. There are products for dry summer weather that are washed off in a flash, and lubricants for wet conditions that smear clothes and attract dust. Therefore, when choosing, it is completely indifferent which brand of bike is better and how high it is in the rating.
Alternative to liquid preparations
- Machine transmission oil. Simple and cheap analogue. On dry it is enough for 60-70 km, in the rain it is quickly washed out. Dust clings and chains are constantly dirty.
- Three-component composition (60% grease, 30% motor oil, 10% graphite powder). An old recipe for a mixture for cooking a bicycle.
- Three-component mixture (85% lithol, 5% soap, 10% graphite powder). Another Dedovsk recipe for cooking composition.
For wet weather conditions
It is better to lubricate the bike chain with heavy grease before it rains. It is delivered in a liquid state to the gap between the pin and the roller and thickens after a while. Crafting recipe:
- Find vehicle compound No. 158 for propeller shafts or “marine” consistency for hubs.
- Mix with gasoline Kalosh (alternative. fuel for lighters) in a 1: 1 ratio.
- Pour the mixture into a vial of nasal drops or fill into a syringe.
How to clean a bike chain
Whatever you lubricate your bike chain with, clean it first. The purpose of this event is one. to remove the mixture of dirt with oil and abrasive. At home, this cannot be done efficiently and quickly. But hardly anyone wants to spend about half an hour each time on service. Check out two methods and use them alternately.
How and how to lubricate a chain on a bicycle with a multi-speed transmission
For wet weather
Any bottle with WET on the label will do. Inside. solvent-diluted grease. When it hits the chain drive, it quickly disperses over the gaps, the solvent evaporates, and we have a thick composition between the roller and the axle.
The composition does NOT wash out, but quickly collects sand and dust in dry weather. In the rain, it serves about 150-200 km.
Can I lubricate the bike chain.
- Machine engine oil. Not recommended, it is watery, the chain dries quickly.
- Litol or grease. It cannot be applied directly: practically nothing gets into the friction points; it will quickly collect all the dirt from the road.
- WD-40. No, it’s a great degreaser, but NOT a lubricant. In the composition. white spirit and some light oils. The solvent transports the oils to sour spots where they thin out rust and other formations. In fact, they can only wash the bike chain.
For dry weather
A DRY bottle will work, but not any. If resource is a priority, choose Teflon, silicone or graphite bicycle lubricants. Their common disadvantage is that they dirty everything around. For those who love cleanliness, it is best to lubricate their bike chain with wax. But it also has a major drawback. it has Unimportant lubricating characteristics.
