How to use bike camera patches

The glueless method that comes from the automotive world is vulcanization, which is also used on a bicycle. Requires special equipment, but reliably repairs punctures. The essence of the vulcanization process is that the peeled patch and the chamber are pressed against each other with great force and heating, in fact, they are fused, forming a single structure.

Vulcanization is much more reliable than any adhesive patches, but requires skill and additional equipment. By the way, there are “household” or home-made vulcanizers, consisting of a vice with a cylinder and a chamber for burning, for example, gasoline or other fuel. The only advice that can be given is to be careful with fire.

Field repair of the camera. Many of us are cyclists, it is useful to read.

There are situations when, for some reason, it is not possible to replace or seal the punctured chamber, and sometimes the whole spare wheel was not with you either. If the hole is small, that is, the wheel descends in at least a minute, then they did the following:

The pump was filled with water. now, depending on its design, it can be done in different ways. then water was poured into the chamber using a pump. you need to fill in about 200. 250 ml. those. about a glass. then the wheel is inflated. water flows out of the wheel much more slowly than air comes out. after this operation, under the above conditions, it is possible to drive this wheel for at least half an hour. then you can pump it up again and add water if necessary. Thus, you can successfully reach the place where you can normally glue or replace the camera. it is worth, if possible, all the same, determine the puncture site and, at stops, make sure that this place is at the bottom and, accordingly, the hole is closed with water. and finally, after a normal repair, the water from the chamber must of course be removed. I would not call it a cool repair, but this method helped out more than a dozen times.

Repair of the chamber with molten polyethylene

During my school days, I rode a classic road bike from the Minsk Motorcycle Plant during my summer vacation at the dacha. Naturally, minor breakdowns occurred, of which, of course, the most frequent was a breakdown of the chamber (nails, wire, etc. are not uncommon on country roads). In the end, the patches ran out and the next breakdown of the rear wheel forced me to look for some simple solution “on my knees”, because I didn’t have a chance to replace the camera in the next few days. A solution was found pretty quickly, although it raised doubts about its effectiveness. I filled the camera with melt from a burning plastic bag. Oddly enough, the camera was holding. Over the next month, two, the chamber was pierced four more times and flooded in the same way. Old “patches” cracked along the edge, but they held. Subsequently, the same long-suffering wheel received a break along the cord in a section of 10-15 cm. The gap was tightened with a keeper tape on top and walked calmly for quite a long time. That bike is still in the country and, although not in use, is still on the move. with the same camera and tire.

in this way, you can reliably eliminate not only a puncture puncture, but even a puncture of several millimeters in 5 minutes. an ordinary coin is taken, preferably of medium or larger diameter, placed on a stone on the edge and with the help of another stone it is bent almost in half. a camera puncture is placed between the folded sides of the coin, and all this is held with the left hand. with the right hand, using a stone or something heavy, you need to hit the coin several times so that it bends as much as possible, pinching the rubber in the puncture area. of course, if you have pliers and a hammer, this will be easier. We tried the method not only on a bicycle tire, but also on a motorcycle camera. it works! moreover, the camera is not damaged. after arriving home you can remove a coin and put a rubber patch!

it’s amazing how quickly the distance scale changes in case of breakdowns: just 20 km to the house was just a stone’s throw and now a puncture. and 20 km turns into an insurmountable giant distance for a pedestrian.

so there is no first-aid kit, I don’t want to go, an old but effective method helped: in the nearest housing a piece of strong thread was obtained from some grandmother. the puncture site on the camera is pulled as much as possible to the side with one hand, and the other is pulled with a thread of 10-15 turns as tight as possible. the resulting pimple is not very aesthetic, but the air does not poison. if you pump up the wheel without fanaticism, you can drive for a week, the main thing is not to forget to glue it!

Repairing the camera with an adhesive plaster and a condom

There was a case in the Crimea. My wife and I rested there, and, although we lived in a small boarding house near Feodosia, the bikes were with us, and we even rode every now and then, examining the surroundings. And then one day we went to the Sea of Azov. We rented a dwelling there for a day, and in the evening went to the Arabat Spit to have a look. And the road on this arrow is a dirt road with protruding stones. And here on one of these stones on the bike of his wife a wheel broke through. Apparently, it was pumped up poorly. I rummaged through the s of my backpack. I didn’t have a first-aid kit, I left it in the boarding house. And how to get back there. it is not clear, not to stomp on foot? The next morning they began to think about how to fix the camera. And what rubber products can you get at the resort? In a word, we got hold of an adhesive plaster and. yes, it was him, they cut out the patch, glued it with a plaster, pumped up the wheel. it does not lower it! So we drove all the way back, only had to pump up a couple of times.

Standard repair process

As with any accident, there is a “routine procedure” for repairing a camera at home. It assumes that you have all the necessary tools, and behind your shoulders. at least a couple of cases when you had to remove and disassemble the wheels.

It will be difficult for beginners the first time, but no fundamental problems should arise during the repair process.

How to properly glue a bicycle tube?

In the event of a puncture or other damage, it is rare which professionals help to seal the bike camera, and the riders have to do everything with their own hands.

Looking for damage

Damage search is a creative thing, albeit rather primitive. Almost everyone recommends using a basin or other container of water to determine the point of damage by the bubbles, but this is not the easiest way, because you have to dry the camera and risk water getting inside through the nipple in order to save a few seconds.

10 Inner Tube Hacks | Mountain Bike Rider

The definition is much simpler and more accessible by ear:

  • Pump up the bike camera.
  • We bring it to our ear and look for a point where air etching is heard.
  • We localize the puncture site of the chamber by air flow or visually.

Everything is very simple. It is only necessary to check for damage around the valve. With such damage, it will no longer be possible to seal the breakdown without special tools.

  • keys and hexagons (for wheels without an eccentric);
  • disassembly, or assembly, is a small tool for bending the tire from the rim, can be easily replaced with a screwdriver or even keys, allows you to work a little more quickly;
  • a basin, jar or other vessel with water. to diagnose the site of damage;
  • vise. for pressing the surface of the camera and the patch to each other.

As you can see, the required set is very limited, which allows repairs to be carried out in almost any conditions.

Repair is carried out according to the standard procedure, after passing which at least once the gluing will not cause any questions.

Where to begin? Determine the puncture site

The most common causes of a tube puncture are tire wear and off-road driving. Although, in fact, there are much more reasons. Riding on a flat tire can become a common culprit for a hole in the cameras, which will lead to tire and rim wear, the repair of which is much more difficult and more expensive than repairing the camera.

Before proceeding with the gluing, you should make sure that there is a puncture in reality and determine its very place. To do this, you need to inflate the wheel, screw the nipple well and determine by ear where the wheel lets air through.

The next step is to unscrew the wheel. To do this, the bike should be placed on the steering wheel, having previously placed a protective base under the seat to avoid scratches and dirt. When unscrewing the rear wheel, place the chain on the back of the smallest sprocket. This will greatly simplify the procedure for assembling it after repair. The presence of a v-brake type brake shoe provides for its opening by means of a set of brake levers and pulling the metal arcuate tip of the jacket out of the groove. If the wheel is secured with bolts, loosen them. With normal fastening, it is worth unscrewing the eccentric by bending the lever and turning the nut in the opposite direction.

After the wheel is removed, proceed to disassembly:

  • we lower the wheel;
  • using a spatula-assembly, we hook up the side of the tire and turn it outward, attaching the other end of the assembly to the spoke;
  • repeat the procedure at a distance of about 20 cm from the first scapula;
  • remove the tire by hand.

If you don’t have tools at hand, try doing it yourself. A short video guide will help you:

After taking out the camera, you should pump it up and put it in the sink with water. The presence of holes in it will be seen by a thin stream of air in the form of bubbles. If the damage is very small, it is necessary to squeeze the chamber with your hand, increasing the pressure in it. This will lead to a faster release of air from it. Holes in the chamber can be caused not only by puncture, but also by breakdown. In the latter case, there will be several short parallel cuts. It is important to thoroughly inspect the tire for all sorts of stuck objects that can cause a repeated puncture.

What is required and what is the sequence of actions

Before proceeding to glue the resulting holes, you should stock up on everything you need:

  • hairdryer;
  • patches;
  • soapy water;
  • a knife;
  • marker;
  • planks;
  • clean rags;
  • glue;
  • clamp or vise.

If you want to solve the problem without buying new bicycle tires, the price of which can be considerable, then the process of rubber resuscitation should begin with a search for the damaged area. You can find it without removing the tire. Spray the inflated wheel with soapy water. Where bubbles appear, you need to put a mark with a marker. After that, disconnect the tire from the rim and remove it by stepping on the side around the circumference and helping yourself with your hands. Next, you will need to thoroughly clean the bike tires with detergents and dry them. Then, on the outside, they circle the puncture site, a similar mark is made inside. a patch will be put here later.

Using a hair dryer, heat up the damaged area, finally removing moisture residues from the tire surface. Wipe the patching area with a rag moistened with Liquid Tire Buffer until the dissolved rubber begins to leave marks on the rags. After that, repeat the operation with a hair dryer, drip glue onto the damaged place heated with it. The width of the area of application should be 0.5 cm larger than the area of the patch. After the glue has dried and the protective layer has been removed from the patch, it is carefully glued to the place of processing with glue in the area of the puncture. To obtain the desired result, after that it is worth placing the boards and carefully clamping them with a vice or a clamp for twenty minutes.

What glue to use

What is the best camera glue? Let’s analyze all the pros and cons.

First of all, you need glue, which, after drying, retains its elasticity, that is, does not harden. This is understandable. It is difficult to create a completely fixed connection on a flexible surface, therefore, the parts fastened together with a hardening compound will disperse over time and require repeated repair.

Therefore, all kinds of superglues such as “Secunda” and “Cosmofen” based on cyanoacrylate are not the best choice. As a temporary measure. quite yourself, in other cases it is better to take a specialized glue for rubber.

How to seal the bike camera

A line of all kinds of adhesives for rubber, the most famous of which is “Moment”.

Affordable, inexpensive, if you’re not in a rush. a good choice.

Red Sun, which is included in the bicycle tube repair kit. If you believe the instructions, then this is not really glue, but a cold vulcanization agent, which is much more effective.

Tip Top SC 2000. Quite a rare two-component adhesive, but one of the most tenacious.

  • Used for gluing industrial rubber conveyor belts.
  • The action is similar to cold vulcanization.
  • Drying time: 2 to 4 hours.
  • Price: about 150 r.

Assembling the wheel

After completely gluing the rubber surfaces, the wheel is mounted on the bike: first, the insulating tape inside the rim is checked, after which the camera is installed.

A weakly inflated wheel is placed under the tire as follows:

  • First, the nipple is threaded through the opening;
  • The tire fits inside the rim;
  • All edges of the chamber are neatly tucked inward;
  • The wheel is inflated with a pump and completely spreads around the rim perimeter.

After installing the camera, it is necessary to check the correct position of the nipple.

In order to put the rear tire, you need to lift the derailleur and set the chain to the sprocket.

After that, the wheel is inserted into the hub and secured with eccentrics. When installing, you must be guided by the rotations that determine the direction of rotation of the wheels.

I hate it when it happens

Larger punctures, like a nail like this, usually require an internal patch. In this case, the same method is used as for repairing the camera, but the tires must be more thoroughly cleaned and prepared, the release agent used in the process of their production must be removed.

Turn the tire inside out and look for the puncture. Clean the sealant from the repaired area.

Put on nitrile gloves and eye protection and apply a small amount of brake cleaner to a towel. Clean the area to be repaired clean.

Sand an area slightly larger than the intended size of the patch. Apply a thin layer of glue to the tire and carcass. Don’t use liquid glue. or you will fail.

Remove the protective film from the patch without touching the work surface. When the glue is dry, press the patch to the desired location, paying particular attention to the edges. LEAVE CLEAR PLASTIC IN PLACE. Removing the thin plastic cover of the patch runs the risk of peeling off the edges. a second hazard. Fit your tires and hit the road.

How to remove the tire and remove the camera

  • We release air from the chamber. This can be done by unscrewing the spool from the nipple, or simply by pressing the spool, wait until the air is released.
  • On the opposite side of the nipple, insert the mounting, perpendicular to the plane of the wheel, trying not to touch the camera.
  • Using the assembly as a lever, we move the tire by the rim, in a small area.
  • Then we remove the tire from the rim with our hands.
  • Carefully remove the nipple from the rim and take out the camera.

How to glue a bicycle tube?

It takes 10 minutes to seal the camera, but if you are in a hurry or the weather is bad outside, this time will be significant. Another difficulty: finding a hole on the camera. Small punctures are problematic to find.
