How to screw the front fender to the bike

Stationary long wings

They are made of metal and metal-plastic. Bolted to frame or fork at three locations. Provides maximum protection because it covers a quarter of the front wheel and half of the rear wheel, and is close to the tire. Stationary long fenders at the rear can be combined with the trunk. When buying such wings, one must take into account that they are heavy. Another disadvantage is that, due to the short distance, dirt gets clogged between the wheel and the wing. Therefore, such fenders are usually installed on road and city bicycles.

As you can see, there are no ideal bicycle fenders. The longer the wing and the closer it is to the wheel, the better the protection. But, such wings are not suitable, for example, for cross-country and other extreme disciplines. Even the best wings will not help in heavy rain. Extremals, for whom water and dirt are little things on the way to victory, they do not need them at all.

But Kotovsky has a different opinion about the road racers.

Road Bike & Hybrid Fenders

Here, the question of appearance is even more important than in the case of mountain bikes. There is a very elegant option that almost does not disfigure the highway. the Crud RoadRacer Mk2 Personally, I have not had time to get it yet, but a road friend recommended it to me.

The system is easily removable and adaptive; such fenders are almost invisible on a bicycle. According to my friend, they protect from water perfectly.

Alternatively, you can put on the classic SKS Race Blades. I put them on a hybrid, with the onset of the rainy season in our Estonia. The design is also easily removable, impressions from several years of operation are positive.

Cycle days. Not a day without a bike!

Types of wings and their effectiveness

Quick release short wings

Made of plastic, they are attached to the frame with a special clip. The distance between the wing and the tire is 10. 20 cm. Because of this, the level of protection is much worse and the dirt flies in all directions. The quick-release short fenders are insensitive to clogging with mud between the fender and the tire, and are quickly removed when transporting the bike. But, with them, the cyclist will be covered in mud. If the height is too high, such wings become a meaningless accessory that does not fulfill its main function. The plastic mount on my fender came off pretty quickly. Also not a hot option

Bike wings

Bicycle mudguards are the most controversial topic for all cycling enthusiasts and pros. Bicycle masters prefer to ride without them. But for regular trips around the city, and even outside the city, cycling wings provide a number of advantages. Did I have it myself, in total? 3 pairs of different types of wings. I haven’t found the perfect wing yet, but unfortunately only the rear bicycle wing.

It is secured with a plastic clip and fixed to the seat tube. Ideally. Spinning back and forth. But this is not critical. But the mount does not fall off.

On the Kotovsky website it is more or less about the wings on the bike. But not completely. Let’s go over the main arguments of the opponents of bicycle fenders.

Excess weight. In one of my articles, I expressed my attitude towards lightening the bike, but in short. do not do the crap. In relation to the fenders, this means that nowadays all good flap options have perfectly acceptable weight classes. Metal as a material is a thing of the past long ago.

The aerodynamics are deteriorating. In my opinion, this item could only be used in time trial races, where every second counts. In ordinary pokatushki, at normal speeds, the influence of the wings on aerodynamics is vanishingly small. For those who really feel the negative effect, I can only advise you to exercise and eat more.

Appearance deteriorates. I can’t argue with that. for me the wings on a bicycle are disgusting, and I can not do anything about it. I will only note that I am talking about sports bikes, on city bikes and touring shields look quite harmonious.

The wings will not protect you from the rain, you will still be wet. Sounds reasonable, but only in case of rain. Nevertheless, most often we have small rains, which are not a problem, as the bike dries before our eyes. It is quite another matter when the stream of water from the rear wheel beats gently into the loin, soaking the diaper. Riding with a wet diaper is quite unpleasant, and on many saddles, painful. I’m not talking about possible health problems.

If you are too lazy to read further, watch a video about wings. What are they:

The site lomasterclass.ru tells about different types of bicycle wings.

Stationary short wings

They are usually made of plastic. They are attached to the frame or fork or at one point with a bolt. They are about one and a half times shorter than the long wings. The stationary short fenders are close to the tire and provide pretty good protection. These fenders are lightweight and well-secured, but provide poor dirt protection for the front derailleur and shins. Personally, I had such wings and broke very quickly. The mountings were not at all so hot.

How to choose bike fenders?

Next, let’s talk about how to properly install the fenders on the bike. There is a good manual on the site http://bikes.sportiv.ru/.

Mounting mudguards on a bike is extremely easy, and finding a really good mudguard is much more difficult. The whole variety of bicycle fenders can be divided into two types: fixed and quick-detachable.

Stationary screws are attached to the front fork and rear stays. For urban models, they sell large bicycle fenders that allow them to cover up to half the wheel circumference (they are usually made of metal and are additionally fixed with long “mustache” of wire at the ends of the wheel axles).

screw, front, fender, bike

It should be noted that the longer the wing and the lower it is located above the wheel, the higher the degree of protection against splashes and the lower the passability: on difficult tracks, dirt will very quickly clog the space under the wings, making it difficult to move.

By the way, the installation of this type of bicycle fenders in pictures was described on the website http://velotur.org

So, this is what it was originally, a bicycle without fenders.

And here is a set for attaching one wing:

Now you need to fix the rods with the bicycle fender as follows:

We collect the wings and they look like this:

Before installing the fenders, it is advisable to completely turn off the rim brakes so as not to interfere.

We fasten the front fender in three places: we unscrew the white reflector and tighten the first fastener under its bolt and we had to put two clamps on separate bolts with large washers, and not on the axle of the front wheel, for which they (clamps), apparently, were intended.

For the rear wing, we bend the plate and fasten it in four places: we fixed two clamps as in the case with the front wheel, for the third fastening we need a bolt for six, we string it on the plate and the tube connecting the fork of the rear triangle

and the last one at the very bottom of the seat tube:

In the end, you may need to make some minor adjustments to the fenders, you can move the clamps and other mountings to seat the fender so that it does not rub against the wheel. And only then we tighten all the bolts to the end.

Installation of quick-release fenders

Quick release fenders attach to the head tube and seat post. These wings are usually very wide, so they provide good protection, including from side splashes. Their main drawback is, perhaps, one: not all quick-release rear fenders can be used with the trunk. The easy removability of the fenders does not mean that they will be easy to steal: the fender (which is rear, which is front) does not cling to the bike directly, but to the mount, and if the wing itself can be removed very quickly, then it takes time to release the mount.

Also, a special guard attached to the bike frame can be attributed to the wings. It can still catch a certain amount of dirt flying from under the front wheel.

It may be that a reflector (corner reflector) is already installed on your bike in the place where you need to mount the stationary fender. It’s okay, as a rule, the length of the bolt allows you to secure both accessories.

Installing the front fender

Usually, the front wing is fixed at one point (unless you have a design with a “mustache”), while the rear wing can have two fasteners: it is screwed to the frame with a screw and additionally fixed with the lower part to the very bottom of the seat tube (for this, at the narrow end of the wing there may be arcuate latch). Of course, if your bike has a rack, the rear fender fits under it. So that it vibrates less and does not shift when driving, you can use rubber bands, ties or somehow additionally pull the wing to the trunk.

Installation of easily removable fenders

Installing easily detachable fenders is also not difficult. The front fender strut mount is inserted into the head tube from below and tightened with an adjusting screw. All. Now insert the wing into the groove (until it clicks). Removing and putting on such a wing afterwards is a matter of a few seconds, but depending on the design, there may be some problems, the main of which is backlash. You may need to independently, as they say, “modify the structure with a file”: how exactly. see the situation.

The rear wing attachment is fixed to the seat post. If the post is too smooth, without the rubber pad to increase friction, the wing can move during the ride. In addition, if the wing is not rigid enough, it can also twitch from side to side, so choose a model that is wider. The easily removable rear wing has one important advantage: depending on the specific situation, you can easily change the distance to the wheel and the angle of the wing.

Remember that you can pick up the nicest fenders (and maybe even improve their splash-catching properties by attaching pieces of plastic to the ends of the fenders), but they still won’t protect you from splashing the cars on the left, and your back (or a backpack on it) from rain from above. Therefore, for a comfortable ride in wet weather, we recommend getting a backpack cover and / or raincoat. Also look out for visor helmets.

And one more video about the review and installation of the wings from the Author:

What to do if there are no holes in the frame?

If the manufacturer has not provided for the installation of full-sized wings, then you can independently make the mounting holes using a drill and a thin drill. Careful work will not damage the integrity of the frame. Side drill seizures can be covered with washers on both sides.

For a straight hole, the drill must go at the correct angle. You can achieve this result using an old plastic comb by clamping the drill between its teeth.

If you don’t want to make changes to the frame design, you should pay attention to the quick-release fenders, which are installed exactly in the crown of the front fork. Rear fender attaches exclusively to the seatpost of the bike frame.

Installation diagram

In most cases, the installation of protective elements is carried out according to the general scheme, which looks as follows:

  • We unfold the package with upgrade elements and a set of necessary fasteners.
  • We fix the rods on the protective elements.
  • We collect them.
  • When working with the front element, unscrew the white reflector and fix the first fixture under its bolt. Two clamps will have to be fitted onto separate bolts with large washers.
  • When working with the rear wing, it is necessary to bend the plate and secure it in four places. The fastening of the two clamps is carried out in the same way as described in the previous paragraph. For the third mount, you need a six-bolt. It must be strung on a tube and plate. The last fixture is at the bottom of the pipe on which the saddle is attached.
  • Fenders installed may require adjustment. Its meaning is to adjust the clamps and mountings in such a way that there is no friction between the wing and the wheel.
  • Now you can tighten the bolts to the maximum level.

How to attach a front fender to a bike

Installation of bicycle fenders is necessary, first of all, for the full operation of the vehicle, which is not limited by weather conditions. Despite the versatility of the bike in use, it is quite difficult to choose the right, and most importantly, high-quality wing.

It should be understood that such accessories are not always supplied with the bike, but there are quick-detachable and stationary models to choose from, which differ in the principle of fastening, design and, of course, in the field of application.

Do not forget about the design features of conventional road bikes, which can only be fitted with stationary fenders. The latter can be made of plastic, but with a similar feather mounting system.

  • screwdriver (preferably typesetting model);
  • socket or box wrench for 9-10.

The list is small, but work has to be done only with ready-made products that have original fastening systems in the kit.

Installation

Mobile versions of this part are quite easy to install, but the process of fixing stationary ones requires especially close attention. Before starting work, the rim brakes must be disengaged so that the rear fender can be attached without any problems. Then you remove the screw located under the seat and you need to put the element on the seatpost post. The front fender is easily bolted into place at the fork crown. It is important to calculate the force with which the bolts are tightened. If you tighten it too much, then the fasteners can be damaged and become unusable, in the opposite case. it will dangle freely and interfere with driving.

Most often, the option of installing one part is not chosen, it is more efficient to put a complete pair. This will provide the best protection against splashes and dirt. If you plan to install a roof rack, you must first install the rear wing. In the case of an already installed trunk, it must be removed.

  • Nuts;
  • Screws;
  • Screwdrivers;
  • Keys to fit.

Now the question of how to install the fenders on a road or road bike has been resolved. It is not difficult to choose the appropriate option, because modern manufacturers produce a sufficient range of such devices. You can also make wings yourself, but this is a rather laborious process. Correct fit will ensure the functionality of the part and will not render it useless, weighing down the bike.

Modern bike manufacturers do not consider it necessary to equip every bike with a complete set of accessories. But without them pokatushki will be accompanied by low comfort and safety. We are talking about the trunk, mirrors, fenders. It is with the installation of the last element that problems often arise, especially for novice cyclists. Today we will learn how to install fenders on a bike, consider various options and make you a professional in this field.

Bicycle fenders are almost always supplied with installation instructions, as well as the necessary fasteners.

Bicycle fenders are almost always accompanied by instructions for their installation, and the necessary fasteners are also included. An exception may be Chinese models. Some instructions even have a diagram that makes the job much easier. But questions still arise and they require immediate clarification.

Installing the rear quick-release wing

In fact, this is a continuation of the aforementioned work, but with regard to the rear wheel. The rear wheel needs to be prepared. For this, a small set of spare parts remained.

Square nuts are inserted into the grooves of the plastic clamp on both sides. They are needed to secure long bolts. The latter are threaded through the remaining extension piece and twisted, thereby creating an attachment of the desired length.

Next, you need to take the wing and put a groove for the holder on it. It is also secured with a screw and washer. We take the next part and insert a threaded pin into it. We fasten the resulting workpiece to the base, where the screw was previously removed.

The above connection is tightened as tightly as possible. If the nut from the kit turns out to be too small, and the probability of its failure into the cut for the groove when tightening takes place, then it must be replaced.

The next step is to secure the two-piece clamp to the seatpost. To do this, release the frame clamp and remove the saddle with the pin outward. The clamp itself is fixed with two screws.

Press the clamp evenly, gradually on both sides. This will eliminate the likelihood of plastic deformation and skewing of the new wing.

The resulting blank with a sheer wing is installed in the received place using the screw remaining in the kit. To fix it, use a hex key, which is also included in the kit. Tighten only by hand, without using additional tubes.

The rear fender can be adjusted in height in two places. at the base and at the point where it is attached to the yoke. Wing height adjustments are based on the slope that will prevent water from getting on your clothing.

These plastic quick-release fenders work well in mud. The distance from the fender to the tire prevents clogging of dirt and, as a result, immobilization of the bike.

For or against

Bicycle fenders have both advantages and disadvantages, which are determined by the type of bike and its purpose. Among the positive aspects of this part on the wheels, it can be noted that:

  • This is good protection against dirt and splashes from under the wheels;
  • Correctly selected, they do not spoil the appearance of the equipment;
  • Some types are quickly attached and removed.

Fans of sports bicycles often do without fenders, as they make the bike heavier, which is unacceptable for sports. For city driving, this detail can be very useful: it will protect the cyclist from getting dirt on his clothes. In order to understand whether the installation of this element is really necessary, you need to try everything on your own experience, as well as choose the right type of fenders on wheels. They can be:

  • Stationary short;
  • Quick-detachable short;
  • Stationary long.

The first option is quite common and they are made of plastic. You need to attach them to the fork or frame using a bolt. Protection is not complete, which in some cases may be significant. They are lightweight and therefore do not particularly affect the weight of the vehicle.

Quick-detachable short ones are also made of plastic, but they have mobility. They should be secured with a special clamp, which allows for quick installation and removal. Many cyclists use this type of fenders on wheels despite the fact that the level of protection is not very high. It is important to carry out the installation correctly, otherwise the part will be useless.

Long stationary fenders for a bicycle are metal parts that are installed by attaching in three places to the fork, frame. The area of protection against dirt flying from the wheels is quite large, but it is necessary to periodically clean the part itself. They are most suitable for road or road type bicycles.

Installation of fenders depending on the type of bike

Not all bicycles have the same fenders.

The fenders are mounted differently on different types of bikes.

Maintenance: DIY bike fenders

Cycling is a sustainable transport and riding is very popular. Owners of this technique must have some skills in maintenance and repair, because this will allow you to quickly and efficiently find a way out in unforeseen situations, for example, glue the camera or put the wings on a bicycle. The latter option causes a lot of controversy among fans of two-wheeled vehicles. It all depends on individual preferences and it is worth familiarizing yourself with this topic in a little more detail.

For or against installing fenders

If you are not an athlete and not a complete fan of the bike mount, then the installation of the wings is a must. Bicycle mudguards are determined by the type of bike and its purpose. Advantages of installing the wings:

  • This is protection against splashes and dirt sticking to you and the bike parts;
  • Correctly fitted fenders improve the appearance of the bike and even increase its safety on the road;

Vulcan LED Light Adapter Install

  • The period between preventive maintenance and mountain bike adjustments increases;
  • The bike breaks down less, fails and washes less often.
    • The fenders also break, both when driving, and when parking and transporting;
    • Fenders can be difficult to store and transport.

    True, some of these difficulties can be eliminated by installing quick-detachable fenders.

    Bicycle mudguards can be divided into two classes:

    • stationary;
    • quick-detachable.

    For mountain bikes, quick release mudguards are recommended. In principle, for a bike with two suspensions, this is the optimal solution. Almost all budget fenders are made of plastic, which practically does not affect the weight of the bike.

    Based on the above features, you can stop at the choice of suitable wings.

    Now, in fact, a short story about how to install the wings on a bicycle. Small, because almost always bicycle accessories are equipped not only with all the necessary mounts, but also with installation instructions, often with diagrams. Note for rim brake owners: loosen the fenders before installing the fenders.

Therefore, for a comfortable ride in wet weather, we recommend getting a backpack cover and / or raincoat. Also look out for visor helmets.

    And one more video about the review and installation of the wings from the Author:

    It is easy to guess that “standard” and “ordinary” wings do not exist in nature. They all differ in several ways.
    1. By the diameter and width of the tire
    2. By bike mounts
    3. Fenders for bicycles without fasteners on the frame
    4. Full-size according to the material of manufacture
    5. Selection of wings according to the method of attachment
    6. Exotic and homemade wing options

    However, the wings do not differ in diameter by the same diameter. Look at the width of the fender so that it can completely cover your tire. This is especially true of mountain bikes, where the tires can be very wide, and even more so for fat bikes.

    Selection of fenders for mounting on a bicycle
    Once you’ve decided on your diameter and width, look at your frame and fork. Are there any holes for the wing attachment? On the fork, they should be on the gorilla (the bridge connecting the 2 parts of the fork) and at the bottom where the wheel is attached. On the frame, the holes (or “ears”) should also be near the place where the wheel is attached to the frame, in the lintel connecting the upper frame stays, as well as at the bottom on the lintel connecting the lower frame stays.

    READ  Stealth bike height adjustment

    If there are holes, then feel free to take a set of full wings. this will be the most practical option. The most that can get dirty is your shoes. Although this can be prevented by installing a mudguard (it can be included in the kit). Don’t worry about the appearance of your bike, even if you have a mountain bike. The not-so-cool appearance of a wing bike is easily compensated for by your neat appearance, regardless of the amount of water and dirt in your path.

    Bicycle mudguards without frame fasteners
    If you have a mountain full suspension or a hardtail without frame fasteners, then we have bad news for you. It will not be possible to completely protect against dirt and water due to the lack of the necessary fasteners for installing full wings. But quick-detachable wings can save you from total washing. With such wings, clothes below the waist will still be dirty, but if you went to a meeting with a girl, you can hide behind a bush and give her flowers from there. After all, from the waist up, you will look impressively good.
    In general, of course, on mountain bikes, fenders are not the most practical accessory and rarely provide complete protection. This does not apply to city bikes, folding bicycles, and cruisers. There, the wings are a necessary element, without which it is impossible to imagine such bicycles, because they are equipped with fenders from the factory. True, the wings offered by the manufacturer may not always suit you. After all, even full-size wings have significant differences, primarily in terms of material.

    Differences between full-size wings in terms of material of manufacture
    Steel. Perhaps the most impractical option. Their only plus is that they are cheap. Everything else is a minus. They are heavy, making the bike significantly heavier. When shaking, they are very unreliable. the mount in the form of a corner strives to fall off the wing and often does it successfully. When driving, they create annoying noise, constantly blurt out, require frequent tightening of connections.
    Aluminum. Lighter than metal, but are very rare for the above reasons, and are much more expensive.
    Plastic. Also a rather rare option. They are much lighter than metal, inexpensive, but also not very reliable.
    Reinforced plastic. Most popular, reliable and lightweight. Due to the thin metal base and plastic surfaces, they have high strength, they crack much less from many irregularities, and are quite elastic.

    The rest of the wings differ in the way they are fastened.
    Quick detachable.
    The front fender is attached to the fork rod from below. The plastic sleeve is inserted inside, and thanks to the spacer mechanism, it is firmly fixed there. The rear fender is attached to the seatpost with a high-strength fabric clamp. Both wings can be removed in 5 seconds, which is why they got their definition.

    Simple fastening. The front fender is screwed onto the gorilla forks. The rear is attached either only to the bridge between the upper frame stays, or it can have an additional hook to the seat tube of the frame.

    Exotic and homemade wing options
    Such wings can only protect a small part of the body, but they have a place to be.
    The shield on the frame will take away some of the dirt sent to you above the waist.

    The guard on the fork will take away some of the dirt intended to get on your face, and also protect the working surface of the fork from heavy wear.

    The spacer between the gorilla and the crown of the fork is also designed to keep your face clean.

    Saddle guard keeps your butt dry and clean.

    How to install bike wings on a mountain bike with your own hands

    First, the rear fender mount was assembled. Watch the video.

    Next, I checked the assembly of the front fender. The two wing halves are fixed to the mounting platform. The platform, in turn, is easily attached and fixed on the bushing. The expandable sleeve is fixed in the column. The kit includes three bushing parts of different diameters. See the photo. The bushing part is clamped in the column with a screw, which is tightened with a hex wrench.

    Fastened the rear wing clamp to the saddle pipe. Adjustment of the wing position is carried out by turning the clamp, the angle of installation of the bracket and wing. The rotation of the bracket is fixed with thumbscrews, and the angle of rotation of the wing with a hexagon. When installing the wing, do not forget about the travel of the rear wheel on the shock absorber. Final fixation of thumbscrews requires considerable effort.

    Clamped the front fender mounting sleeve. I tried on the wing. Corrected the position of the wing by turning the sleeve. Installed the wing.

    The wings retain their shape while on the move (watch the video), but they are flexible enough, which will most likely save them from damage both from foreign objects on the go and during transportation or storage. The front fender can be removed almost instantly, and to remove the rear fender you need to unscrew one thumb screw.

    The question of how to install the fenders on a mountain bike was solved by me. In my case, with the exception of the “surprise”, it’s easy to do it yourself. I bought the wings here at this link http://ali.pub/1u8lhm. But there is also a budget option http://ali.pub/1ufqk7, although I will not say anything about the delivery time. I did not check.

    Thank you for your attention and good luck.

    How to install front fender on your bike

    Quick release short wings

    Made of plastic, they are attached to the frame with a special clip. The distance between the wing and the tire is 10. 20 cm. Because of this, the level of protection is much worse and the dirt flies in all directions. The quick-release short fenders are insensitive to clogging with mud between the fender and the tire, and are quickly removed when transporting the bike. But, with them, the cyclist will be covered in mud. If the height is too high, such wings become a meaningless accessory that does not fulfill its main function. The plastic mount on my fender came off pretty quickly. Also not a hot option

    Installation of finished plastic fenders type PM-05

    They are suitable for bicycles with wheel sizes ranging from 24 “to 26”. Everyone starts from the back. The bracket is placed on the seat post. Then the front part of the wing is snapped into it.

    If the brake system is on vibrating racks on a bicycle, they must be released.

    Next, you need to take a bracket, screw and nut. We pass the screw into the hole, and on the outside we attach the bracket. You need to fix the structure tightly, lifting it to the top as much as possible.

    I squeeze the edges of the installed bracket so that its edges lie in the grooves. It is quite simple to do this, even with one hand. The depth is chosen based on personal preference. The mount is based on a ratchet.

    Now take the front fender and the screw and nut. The front fender is also installed with a hole, but not in the crown, but in the gorilla of the fork. For convenience, you also need to release the brakes.

    The screw is threaded into the inner side. On the reverse side, we put on the wing, throw in the nut and fix it. You do not need to fully tighten the nut. For convenience, you can grab it with a spanner wrench, and wrap it with a screwdriver.

    The next thing to do is adjust the wing height. This is to prevent the protector from rubbing against it. Otherwise, when reversing, there is a high probability of damage to the product.

    At the end of the installation, the screw is tightened completely. That, in fact, is the whole process of attaching the front and rear fenders. These fenders are perfect for road bikes, as the distance from the tread to the fender is minimal. Such an installation will almost completely protect against water ingress on clothes.

    Installation of stationary metal wings

    The metal stationary model is also installed on the mount, and at the bottom it is fixed to the mounting places of the fork and chainstays. Before buying such fenders, take a look at your frame, check for mounting locations. This will allow you to determine if these wings will fit in size.

    If it is found that the bike does not have any mounting feather holes, you can cut a few pieces from the non-new spacer and tighten it all with ordinary clamps.

    Thanks to the all-metal construction and fixation on the long hard-wire whiskers at the wheel axle tips, half the wheel circumference is achieved.

    Installation is much easier than the one mentioned about the quick release models. The front is fixed to the frame with a fixing bolt and tightened with a lock nut. The nib pads are screwed onto the front fork with flat head screws.

    The installation principle of the rear wing is similar to the front one. One has only to take into account the fact that the longer the rear wing, the lower its location. This will allow for maximum protection, but will significantly reduce the ride height. Any dirt will fill the gap quickly enough to bring the bike to a standstill.
