How to ride a bike on the road

Drunk driving

Cyclists as road users are subject to all traffic rules. Therefore, a cyclist is prohibited from riding in a state of alcoholic intoxication or in a state caused by the consumption of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, their analogues, toxic or other intoxicating substances.

What should be a bike

The bike must have good brakes, steering and horns. It must also be equipped with a rear-view mirror and reflectors: white at the front, red at the rear, and orange on each side.

When driving on the road at night or in case of insufficient visibility, a headlight (lamp) emitting white light should be turned on on the front of the bicycle, and a red light at the back.

Types of intersections

In total, there are several types of intersections: unregulated, priority and regulated. Let’s take a closer look at each one, as this information is very important for the correct movement of cyclists.

Unregulated intersections are driven by the “obstacle from the right” principle. Before turning, you must pass all vehicles that move from there. If you need to turn left, then you should skip the entire oncoming lane.

Priority intersections are those intersections where, according to traffic rules, some pass through, no matter what, while others yield. Here the priority of roads comes first: main and secondary. In order to avoid problems with the definition, it is necessary to carefully study the rules for cycling. If you are driving along the main lane, you need to slow down a little before the intersection, you need to keep in mind that not everyone knows about the rules. If you need to turn left at such an intersection, then in this case it is necessary to skip vehicles moving from all directions.

Regarding regulated intersections, they are street intersections where it is forbidden to turn left. However, there are certain tricks in the rules for cycling. For example, you can do the maneuver in two ways:

  • get off the vehicle and walk along the pedestrian crossing;
  • drive a 90-degree angle, first straight to the end, turn left and straight again. This option is suitable for those roads where there are no zebras and cars standing nearby.

Difficult situations

In this question, we will consider several difficult cases, and the way out of them:

  • Overview. This is very important, because before each maneuver it is necessary to assess the situation. Bicycle lights and mirrors are not found on all vehicles of this type, so you have to turn your head. However, this action should not affect the quality of control, so you need to practice a lot.
  • Overtaking. Like other drivers, cyclists have the right to overtake. Cycling rules state that this maneuver should only be done on the left side. You can overtake other two-wheeled vehicles and move in two rows, if this does not contradict the rules.
  • Intersection of intersections. Priority like the main road extends to both the car and the bicycle. That is, no one canceled the “obstacle on the right”. Special attention should be paid to the left turn. It is allowed to maneuver on a single lane road. In other cases, it is recommended to get off the bike and go through the intersection in accordance with all pedestrian rules.
  • Obstacles. The roads are different, so it is possible to move near corners, tunnels, thickets and other obstacles. In this case, a regular beep is perfect to warn other vehicles of an approaching bike. In other countries like Ukraine and Belarus, every driver must have a call. In our country, this is not established by law, but it is implied for each type of transport.

How to ride a bike on the road

It should be noted that it is very problematic to move along pedestrian paths, and there are very few special bicycle lanes in a large city. Therefore, it is often necessary to drive on a common highway with cars. To avoid additional problems, you need to clearly know the rules of cycling.

Where are you allowed to travel?

This issue is quite acute, precisely because of the lack of special lanes, fans of a two-wheeled vehicle must move along the highway. So where can you go by bike? It is worth noting that such places are marked quite specifically:

In practice, most two-wheeled vehicle enthusiasts like to ride on sidewalks, which is, in principle, contrary to the rules. The cyclist is a road user, not a pedestrian. Keep this in mind when traveling.

Cycling Safety

At the end of the article, we will give a few theses that will help you protect yourself on the roads and minimize the likelihood of an accident. Let’s talk about this in more detail:

Driving a vehicle, you need to drop the pathos and focus on the road. This way you minimize the likelihood of an accident and injury.

The main responsibilities of cyclists

By observing these three simple points, we have the right to drive on public roads at any time of the day or year. I emphasize, including in winter, so that drivers do not shout there, who are disturbed by a bicycle due to the fact that they have to go on a rut.

Difficult situations

Safe flight when maneuvering

Maneuvering on the road is a deviation from a straight line. According to the traffic rules, the driver in this situation must give way to vehicles moving straight. Carriageway maneuvers are about starting, changing lanes and turning. We will consider the last category in a separate section, but now let’s talk about how to properly start the movement and rebuild.

At the beginning of the movement, it is necessary to give way to everyone who travels along the way: cars, motorcycles, other bicycles. As soon as a safe gap has formed and other rides are still far away, we deviate to the left, level the steering wheel and pick up speed. When turning onto the road from the adjacent territory (courtyards, driveways, platforms), you must also skip everyone.

How To Ride In A City | Bike Riding Tips For Busy And Urban Streets

Changing lanes is necessary when avoiding obstacles or moving in a permitted direction. For example, the right lane is only for right turns, but you must drive straight. The trajectory when changing lanes should be straightened as much as possible, so you need to start deviating to the left in advance. We give way to passing transport, reduce the speed. When avoiding obstacles on narrow roads with an exit to the left side, you must stop and let oncoming traffic pass. If the obstacle is on the side of the oncoming lane, then the cyclist has the advantage of passing on his territory.

Where can you ride

You should ride a bike on a cycle path, and if there is no one, on a sidewalk, sidewalk or footpath, without creating obstacles to the safe movement of pedestrians. If the indicated road elements are absent or it is impossible to move along them, cyclists are allowed to move along the carriageway in one row no further than 1 meter from its right edge. Wherein:

You cannot ride a bike on highways.

It is necessary to drive on the roads in the direction of movement of vehicles. Also, in the direction of travel in the dark or in case of insufficient visibility of the road, a pedestrian must walk if he moves along the carriageway and leads a bicycle, which at the same time must be indicated by parking lights, signal lights or reflectors.

Serviceability

First of all, the cyclist is obliged to carefully monitor the health of the vehicle.

Namely. check all the most important parts of the bike (handlebars, serviceable brakes), check if it is equipped with other important parts for driving on the track:

  • reflectors (back, front, and sides);
  • lanterns that work at night;
  • a good call to give a sound signal.

The cyclist should highlight his bike on the roadway so that both the vehicle and the driver himself are clearly visible from the side to all other road users.

Speed

According to traffic rules, moving in sync with the flow of cars is the safest option for each vehicle.

But on the road, you should develop and maintain a fairly high speed, at least 20 km / h.

It is necessary to adhere to this speed limit, since driving too slow can interfere with cars, since they have to maneuver around the cyclist.

This is especially true for narrower roads, where passing with oncoming and associated vehicles is difficult.

It is worth noting that high speed is only justified if all other vehicles are moving fast.

Fines and liability of cyclists for traffic violations

As for this point, it is much easier for cyclists than for car drivers. According to the law, violations of traffic rules on a bicycle are punishable by a fine of up to 800 rubles, or 1000-1500 in case of burden of alcohol intoxication. Yes, the fine for riding a bicycle while drunk is only 1,500 rubles, motorists are jealous.

In Europe, a cyclist is punished for driving a bicycle while intoxicated under the same article as a car driver. At the same time, if you have a driver’s license, then you risk losing it, which is somewhat unfair, because the one who does not have the right will get off with only a monetary fine (from 1000 euros and above, in case of repeated violations. a prison sentence plus a fine).

I don’t know if there are many people in the Russian Federation fined for drunkenness of cyclists (or for other sins), as if we are still “invisible” to the police. But this is for now, because the cyclist is the same tool for filling the state treasury, like any other participant in the movement. Therefore, it is better to accustom yourself to discipline on the roads now.

Traffic rules for a cyclist or how to ride and not get killed on the roads

Go

We take in hand a little book called traffic rules. Traffic Laws. We read carefully. It is not necessary to memorize how to tow the car correctly, but the rules for driving through intersections, what this or that sign means and who should be skipped when. you should definitely know. Sometimes it can save your life.

The cyclist is a full-fledged participant in road traffic. Accordingly, he has both rights and obligations. Yes, responsibilities too. The fact that we have two wheels does not make us special! Halo above the head does not appear and additional lives are not added!

If this is your first time on the road, it would be great to have an experienced cyclist friend who will show you how to ride competently in traffic. Ride with him for a week or two, look carefully at what and how he does. If this is not the case, watch the road while driving in a car, in a taxi, or on public transport. When and how cars get under way at intersections, how they turn right and left, how OT (public transport) drops off passengers and so on. This will help you quickly navigate in an incomprehensible situation. Intuition is just a memory

The first trips alone on the road are always a little scary, both by bike and by car. I share a life hack: leave very, very early at first. My first trips were in the summer at 4.00-5.00 in the morning. it’s already light, there are practically no cars on the roads yet, there is time to drive through the streets when no one bothers you to concentrate, study and remember the signs, the time of the traffic lights. I recommend that you pass all the intersections and junctions that frighten you in the morning, remembering how to pass them in a relaxed atmosphere, you will not be confused by them at rush hour. For example, I circled all the necessary areas and roads several times until I memorized everything to the point of automaticity. Having overcome the fear of the first trips. you can go on weekends: there are fewer cars, the drivers are not so nervous). Then. on weekdays, but in the afternoon, at 12.00-15.00. And already at the very end. rush hour, 8.00-10.00 and 18.00-20.00 in the city center (even more fun when you are in contact)). The whole process will take 2-4 weeks, depending on the frequency of your travel, although this is very individual.

Let’s say you still decide to leave. Check your bike for proper brakes and adequate gear shifting. Believe me, it is not very pleasant to find a faulty brake, for example, on Vladimirsky descent or a jammed chain and wheel, when a wagon flies next to you.

Helmet. I know many adherents of riding without a helmet, that allegedly motorists of riders without a helmet go around at a great distance, and that “but in Amsterdam they drive without helmets and nothing” and “I drive carefully and do not fall” But I also believe in laws physics. And the fact that the skull is clearly inferior in strength to asphalt or a car body. And in the fact that it is impossible to predict 100% when you will fall and not touch your head to something solid. The motorist is at least protected by metal, while we are only protected by a helmet and uniform. I feel sorry for my brains, they are not made of polystyrene, so the helmet must have.

Whether you wear it or not is everyone’s personal business. But in the city, he can protect you in case of a fall or collision, and at least protect you from CCI. And yet. beginners, despite the fact that they drive slowly, fall more often and with more serious consequences, please take care of yourself, do not neglect protection.

Rear view mirrors for cyclists. Personally, I drive without them, having learned from the first days to look around without wagging the wheel and assess the situation behind my back without distortion in the mirror. On the contrary, they help someone. In general, an additional source of information about the environment will not hurt you. Again a matter of practice.

How To Ride Safely On The Road | Ridesmart

DO NOT LICK YOUR WIDE. You do not need to drive very close to the curb. Leave yourself at least half a meter for maneuver, and even better 1-1.5. otherwise, a car overtaking you or will rub you on the curb, whether you yourself will catch on it with a pedal. The closer you drive to the middle of the lane, the more chances that the car will overtake you by changing lanes, reducing the risk of catching you with a mirror like if it was driving in the same lane with you. It is clear that there is no need to be impudent and proudly ride in the middle of the lane in a traffic jam, collecting the tail from the dissatisfied. but still think about your safety There are also storm drains at the side of the road, where the wheel can fall and the road surface is not in perfect condition. And there is also a lot of garbage and you can catch a kaku that will pierce your camera.

Straightness of movement and signals. Drivers are not telepathic. They CANNOT predict or read your mind. whether you want to turn or dodge on the road. The cyclist also has no turn signals. Therefore, hands remain. The traffic rules clearly indicate how to indicate to the cyclist “turn left”, “turn right” and “stop”. Even if not all drivers remember them, in any case the car driving behind you will react to any hand movement and prepare for your maneuver or turn. The same applies to bypassing parked cars or other obstacles on the road: take a look (look in the mirror), make sure that there is no car driving close behind you, show with your left hand that you are going to go to the left and only then change lane or go around the car / minibus / pit / repair or whatever else prevents you from driving in your lane). If there are a lot of parked cars, but they are located at some distance from each other (for example: near KPI or Shevchenko Blvd.), then you do not need to wiggle around each one. go straight until the lane is free. In general, try to drive straight and predictably for other road users.

Mark your carcass on the road. Day and night. I really “love” ninjas that cut through at night without a single identifying element. flashing lights or reflectors. YOU CAN’T SEE. Absolutely, absolutely, 100%, for sure, for sure, really, really. Observe other cyclists yourself at night. who will you notice earlier and whether you will notice at all: with or without a flashing light. Please do not rely on street lights or car headlights. The moment when you are in a black jacket on a black bike (and at night EVERYTHING looks black) will still be noticed. it may be too late. Lethally late. A rear blinker or reflective bracelet costs a penny, but will save you from a rear-end collision. Front light is equally important if you often drive in the evenings. On the roads there are holes, branches, dogs running over your trajectory and much more that the headlight will help you notice before you run into it and fall. You will also be seen by leaving cars at intersections or secondary roads. I recommend turning on the headlight for a couple of seconds into the “flashing lights” mode when you pass the exits from the courtyards or secondary ones and see a car there. an active light source is more noticeable, against the background of more powerful car headlights your will not get lost and the leaving car will notice you. The same applies to the rear flasher. in the city in traffic, switch to flashing mode.

The most dangerous time on the road is twilight. When everything merges into gray. It is recommended to turn on the light already when it starts to turn gray.

During the day, a bright uniform, a T-shirt or a backpack will also make you noticeable.

I think. there is no need to talk about the ban on driving at a red light, right?)

Whom and when to skip (this is all in the traffic rules):

And in general. if you are not 100% sure that they are seeing you and that you will not run into this or that road user. give in, be attentive and careful.

Crossroads when there are a lot of cars. If you stopped at a red and are waiting for a green one, move literally half a meter forward in front of the cars so that the motorists who are standing with you will see you. You should not huddle under a car, especially under minibuses or trucks. Then you will not get into the blind spot of the car. And at the start you will be visible. A couple of seconds that you spend on acceleration will not really slow down the car from behind, but they will definitely see you and drive around at a safe distance. If you are passing an intersection and you need to go straight, and the car wants to turn right behind you, move to the middle of the lane, the car will let you pass if you take the lane and only then turn, and not cut you off (one of the common accidents with a cyclist). If there is a blue sign with arrows and the extreme right lane is intended only for turning to the right. move to the second lane and let the car turn right.

Turns. Turn right. look around in advance (or look in the mirror), make sure that there is no car behind you, SHIFT to the middle of the lane and only then turn. In this case, the car that will also turn after you will have to let you pass and wait until you pass, and will not rub you to the curb. Also, do not go into a turn at the same time with a car, and even more so with minibuses / trams or trucks. this can end in disastrously. With a red traffic light, but with a green arrow, you can turn right, but first skipping pedestrians and cars that are moving to their green.

Turning to the left. yes, the cyclist can turn left. But only when there is no more than one lane in one direction. And when there are no tram rails. And all the maneuvers must be done, after making sure that you are in a safe environment behind your back and that you have been noticed. They looked around, made sure, showed the turn, moved to the left edge of the lane, missed oncoming traffic, and turned. If there is more than one lane, we go straight. before the pedestrian crossing we turned and again drove straight with the whole stream. Or dismounted and crossed the intersection like a pedestrian. Yes, this is also possible and the crown does not fall Especially if the intersection is busy and you are not sure on the road yet.

Avoiding minibuses, buses, parked and leaving cars. Drive around within an open door distance. Look at the vehicle signals and the wheels. If the turn signal lights up and the wheel has already begun to turn, be careful, now the car will taxi and you may not be seen. Look at the car mirrors. if the cabin is empty. you can go around the car closer, if not. with a margin on the open door. You can exit as a driver. and the passenger, this must be remembered. If the door opens and you realize that you do not have time to slow down, a loud shout is enough to warn you. If, nevertheless, you entered the door (although it is better not to do this), call the police. On the part of the motorist, this is a violation of traffic rules, it is not your fault.

In buses and minibuses, keep an eye on passengers. if they just get in or out. the bus will not leave soon, you can go around. DO NOT do it on the right! There a passenger can come out of the door and then you will lie on the asphalt together. When you drive up to the OT stops, it will not be superfluous to make sure if there is a minibus / bus / trolleybus following you that will want to overtake and cut off you, having dropped off passengers. If one is approaching you, either skip it (remember, you are alone, but there are many passengers) or, if there is enough speed, quickly pass the stop by shifting to the left so that you are not pressed.

Driving in lanes for OT. There is no unambiguous prohibition in the rules, so it’s possible). Because there is clearly safer than between the OT lane and the rest of the cars. But remember, yes, that you are alone, and there are many passengers, for example, on a trolleybus. Therefore, if you drive along the OT lane, then you must skip this very OT.

Blind spots near the car. They are there and it is better not to get there. Especially for large vehicles. No need to crawl under trucks / trucks / trolleybuses, etc., and even more so when turning and changing lanes. Better to skip than then “easier to paint over than to scrape off” a moment of black humor.

Tram rails. And not only trams. They are slippery. Highly. Even when dry. Especially for road wheels or city bikes on slicks. And wet after the rain all the more so. Therefore, try to cross tram tracks at right angles. Otherwise, you can slip or hit the wheel in the gap between the asphalt and get stuck and then it hurts to lie on them. In general, carefully with the rails :).

ride, bike, road

Sound signals on the bike. Honestly. I drive without them. Never needed. But many people use the same AIR ZOUND and are happy. I don’t know, I can’t say anything. The only thing is that I don’t like it when they scare pedestrians on the sidewalks or bike paths. It’s enough to say politely to be missed.

Conflicts with motorists. I didn’t have those, so that it was against the background of violation of certain rules. But I can say that deciding something by force is not an option. Call the police and do not enter into dialogues with outright hamams. this will not end well. Lifehah girls. to some unreasonable claims or flirting with rubbing to the side of the road. say loudly “YOU SCORED ME!”. This works much better than reciprocal rudeness, because very few people expect this in response.

And remember, even if someone nervously honked you in the back without your fault, or yelled, or got nasty for no reason. he spoils his own nerve cells, not you :). Grow a huge zen for city trips, it helps preserve STIHL and the nervous system).

Fatigue. If you are really, really tired / rolled away or did not get enough sleep: this greatly reduces the concentration of attention. If possible, do not drive on the road in such a state. Somehow, after 220 km and a sleepless night on the way home, I fell asleep (!) For a couple of seconds and almost drove off the road to a ditch near the forest, since there was no one around. Better to crawl quietly onto the sidewalk and carefully roll home, remembering that pedestrians have an advantage on the sidewalk. Helps wash with cold water. But in general, you shouldn’t ride tired or sleepy.

Headphones. Do you like music? Can’t live without the songs of your favorite artist? So. you will listen to them while cycling. the figurative expression will become a reality. There is no need to deprive yourself of one of the senses: you may not hear the signal of the car behind your back, the grinding of brakes, or something else. which will require an immediate response. Love music. listen to it at home / at work / in the car in general, anywhere, but not on a bicycle. As an alternative. a portable speaker, IMHO, is also distracting, but at least not as much as earplugs. They’re on the taboo road.

There will be no more horror stories. Written a lot, but in combination with time, a habit is developed to follow the road almost automatically. Specifically, in traffic I feel like a fish in water.

  • be predictable
  • be visible
  • always remember that you may not be seen

On this basis, behave very carefully on the road. For we are small and very fragile. While there are no bike paths and the world as a whole is imperfect. you have to ride in what it is

Something like that Good luck on the road!

But there is also a fly in the ointment: there was also news that a car hit a cyclist in the city of N. Because it’s spring, and not all our drivers are so conscious as to prepare for the spring season of cyclists on the roads. Many of whom have a very vague idea of the rules of the road and their rights / obligations on the road.

The text is illustrated with a wonderful creative from Pavel Korzhavin

Let’s start. I will try to share my experience and observations over 5 years of active driving along the streets of Kiev for 5-10,000 km per season, and, I note, without a single collision or conflict situation with motorists. I traveled both on MTV and on a highway. Notes are probably more suitable for beginners who are starting out on the road for the first time. Or those who actively ride, but still do not travel further than the forest or park. Naturally, we are talking about driving on public roads. According to the rules, a cyclist must follow them if there is no cycle path nearby. And since we practically do not have them, we go on the roads :).
