How to ride a bike hands-free

There is no specific technique for performing this trick. If you are trying to figure out how to ride a bike hands-free, the first step is to understand the physical meaning of the process. As you know, a bicycle maintains a balanced position and does not fall due to constant steering and deflection of the cyclist in the right direction. What changes when we try to move without arms? In fact, practically nothing. The cyclist simply cannot steer with his hands. Otherwise, only the weight distribution of the bike changes. Instead of resting on the steering wheel, the person rests completely on the saddle. Now you need to steer with the help of balancing. Imagine that you are holding the steering wheel with your hands and steer towards the fall. Replace the movement of the rudder with a deflection of the torso, and the rudder, thanks to the castor, will return itself to the balance position when leveling the position in the vertical plane. This is the standard bike ride.

Accordingly, cycling without hands is possible due to the deviation of the body in the right direction. But it’s easier to tell than to learn to do.

Learning to ride a bike hands-free

Before starting this small master class, we must remind you that everything that you do is your conscious choice. The editors are not responsible for the possible consequences of performing such a trick. Take the issue seriously. While riding without hands, you can get serious injuries, so be sure to behave very carefully and, for a start, use special protection (helmet, gloves and knee pads). Safety is the most important point in these exercises.

So, back to doing the trick. As we wrote above, the secret lies in the ability to balance. This means that nothing should prevent the handlebars of the bicycle from moving and turning freely. If your bike’s steering column is overtightened or not yet run-in, the handlebars will have difficulty spinning when the bike is tilted. This may cause the trick to fail.

For training, choose some kind of flat area without unnecessary pits or obstacles.

Get on your bike and ride in a straight line several times. Now repeat the exercise alternately holding the steering wheel with your left or right hand.

The next step is to try to let go of both hands. Please note that it is necessary to release both hands at once. If you release one hand first and then try to release the other, an imbalance will occur and the bike will collapse. An experienced cyclist can easily solve this question, but if you are only learning to ride a bike without hands, then this will not work.

Letting go of your hands, raise them carefully above the steering wheel so that in case of loss of balance you can quickly grab the steering wheel again. To do this, until you feel confident in movement, do not move your palms further than 3-5 cm from the handlebars. Choose a comfortable speed. Obviously, this is not great speed. But she’s not small either. That is why we use the term “comfortable speed”.

When you take your hands off the wheel, you begin to feel that delicate balance that we wrote about earlier. Please note that the more confident (stronger) you hold the bike with your feet, the easier it is to maintain a straight forward direction without holding the handlebars. You can gently press down on the pedals to balance. This will affect the “equilibrium process”.

Another life hack for maintaining balance is pedaling in the right gear. If you let go of your hands without pedaling, the stability of the bike becomes lower. Select the appropriate gear and pedal, trying to slowly release your hands. The twist should be uniform, calm and not require a large expenditure of force.

We performed all the previously described actions in the “hands next to the wheel” mode. When you already feel confidently in balance and see that the bike is obeying, you can try to spread your arms out like a “T”. This is not much more difficult, but often intimidating to the inexperienced cyclist. First of all, let go of your hands by quickly spreading them in different directions and also quickly returning them to their place. Through this exercise, you will get a feel for the behavior of the bike and see if you can increase the time of cycling without hands.

True, there is another important point. The height of the seatpost also greatly influences the mastery of this exercise. Pick it up that is comfortable for you. Keep in mind that the taller the bike saddle, the harder it is to get your hands off the handlebars. For experiments, it is better to raise the saddle so that your feet can reach the ground.

The presence of a rear suspension also affects the learning process. It is often easier to do this trick on long travel double suspensions, especially for a beginner. The width of the rubber also affects. The softer and wider the rubber, the easier it is to balance.
