How to choose a tricycle
Cycling stroller. useful for a child 1-2 years old. Has pedals, steering wheel, seat belts and a trump card. Most often completely controlled by the parent, since the child can rarely reach the pedals at this age.
Tricycle. designed for children from 2 to 4 years old. The main advantage of such a bike is stability, so no skills are required from the child to use it. In addition, tricycles with a handle can be used as a bicycle stroller.
There are models in which the handle can be removed when the child grows up to self-control the bike.
Important: the bike must be fitted with a live fitting. The kid, being in the saddle, should touch the ground with his whole foot.
- Tricycle with parent handle
- Self-driving tricycle
Klaxon. with its help the child gives a signal, notifying about the approach of the bicycle. In addition, the horn serves as additional entertainment for the baby.
Fenders are plates that protect the cyclist and others from dirt and splashes flying from under the wheels while riding. Very useful for riding in wet weather after rain.
Pedal Lock. Allows you to disconnect the pedals from the wheel. Thus, they will not rotate while the bike is moving. Relevant when using a bicycle as a stroller, since the risk of pedals hitting the child’s legs is eliminated.
Important: Although pedals are unlikely to be needed for a one-year-old toddler, they will eventually start using them. It is better to choose bikes with long and wide (but not heavy) pedals. Small pedals are uncomfortable for a child. the legs will constantly slide off them.
A footrest is a platform on which a child can place their feet by removing them from the pedals. Useful when using the bike as a stroller.
Visor. protects the baby from direct sunlight and rain. It is found in various versions. an umbrella, a canopy, a folding dense hood. For more convenience, it is worth purchasing a domed awning.
Game bar. provides the child with additional entertainment and is placed on the steering wheel. Performed in the form of switches, buttons, dials, toys.
Trunk. used for transporting goods on a bicycle. In a tricycle it has the shape of a deep tray in which it will be convenient for the kid to carry his toys.
Bag for things. plays the same role as the trunk, located on the parent handle. The bag, unlike the trunk and the basket, is made of soft material and has a fastener.
Plastic. do not have tires, are varied in color and are inexpensive. However, they are not shock-resistant (they can crack), transmit strong vibrations to the bike and make a lot of noise.
Rubber one-piece. consists of a rigid solid rim and a solid tire. These tires do not need to be inflated and are not puncture sensitive. On the other hand, such wheels do not absorb shocks well and damp vibrations poorly.
Plastic rubber. consist of a plastic rim with a thin narrow rubber coating. They have the advantages and disadvantages of plastic wheels, but they smooth out vibrations a little better.
Polyurethane. consists of a rigid rim and a solid tire. Similar in properties to wheels made of solid rubber.
Rubber inflatable. consist of a rigid rim and a tire filled with pressurized air. Advantages: soft ride, good shock absorption, structural strength. Disadvantage. puncture sensitivity.
Wheel sizes are indicated in inches. The height of the bike depends on this value. Better to opt for a bike with large and massive rubber wheels. Such a bike will be stable and have better flotation. A bike with small or plastic wheels is unstable, especially on muddy or wet surfaces.
Parental Grip. Allows you to control and guide the movement of the bike. It is a bar with a handle located behind the saddle. Using the parental handle, you can push the bike or prevent your baby from driving in a dangerous direction, and also use the bike as a stroller.
Seat belts. prevent the child from falling out of the bike, even with a strong push.
A safety rim is a handrail located around the saddle of a tricycle. Serves the same function as seat belts. Relevant for the smallest children.
Helmet. protects the baby from craniocerebral injuries when falling, and also performs a decorative function. in such a helmet the baby will feel like a real cyclist.
The seat of a tricycle is either triangular or rectangular. It is better to opt for a triangular seat, as its elongated edge will prevent the baby from sliding forward onto the frame. As a rule, the seat is equipped with a backrest on which the child can lean.
Usually the seat is made of plastic, sometimes a fabric insert or splashes of rubber are used to prevent the baby from slipping. There are seats with a soft liner, providing the child with maximum comfort.
Since the child is constantly growing, it is advisable to purchase bicycles in which horizontal (up to the handlebar) seat adjustment is provided. This will provide additional comfort for the baby and will allow you to use the bike for a long time.
Initially, the handlebar serves as an additional fulcrum for the child, and the parent controls the bike using the parent’s handle. Then the baby independently controls the bike using the steering wheel.
Steering lock. allows you to lock the front wheel in a straight position. In this case, the child will not be able to operate the bike. This feature will allow the parent to use the bike as a stroller.
Radio Flyer Hubcap Removal
Important: it is recommended to choose bicycles with rubberized grips on the handlebars. this will prevent the baby’s handles from slipping off the handlebars.
It is advisable that the handlebar is adjustable in height (lift adjustment). this will extend the life of the bike for a growing child. It is worth paying attention to the ease of steering wheel adjustment (no tools).
The group of the cheapest bicycles is made up of products of the brands Orion, Pilsan, cheap models Bambi, Profi Trike, Smart Trike, TechnoK. These are bicycles without handles for toddlers who can already ride on their own. When choosing a model, choose the most durable frame, but most importantly, one that is comfortable for the child. Brand doesn’t play a decisive role.
The Alexis, Ardis, Smoby models are quite good tricycles with a handle and cycle carriages in the middle price segment. Good assembly and safety can be accompanied by minor flaws, for example, the lack of adjustment of the visor, parental handle, safety rim and other parts. With such a budget, it is better to pay attention to Bambi, Geoby bicycles, budget ProfiTrike models. These cycle carriages are often lighter in weight, beautiful in design and performance, equipped with good inflatable wheels.
Of the more expensive models, it is worth noting the brands Fisher-Price, Injusa, Kettler, Peg Perego and others. It is worth choosing bicycle strollers from specialized manufacturers, because the choice of models and is much higher there. For bicycles of well-known “adult” brands, for example, Schwinn, the price can be significantly overpriced.
How to remove the rear wheel?
The rear wheel removal process is COMPLETELY the same as the front wheel removal process. You don’t even need to look at the equipment suspended from the back (you only have to remove the chain from the axle if it gets caught).
How to remove wheels from a tricycle
Some novice cyclists ask the question of how to remove a wheel from a bicycle. over, difficulties arise, as a rule, with the rear wheel. Quite often you can hear such phrases: “Oh, I’m afraid to take off the rear wheel, there are so many things screwed up, screwed up, I will never put it back on and I will definitely break something. I’ll go to the service center.” Of course, you can do this, but than repeatedly spending your time and money for going to bicycle repair, it is easier to just figure out how to do this operation on your own, especially since such a need may arise somewhere in the forest outside the city, and a bicycle workshop there it will definitely not be found.
Installing the front wheel
As you perfectly understand, the process of installing the front wheel is the opposite of removing it and it makes no sense to describe it in detail.
We put the wheel back, as it was. Do not confuse the direction of rotation of the wheel (written on the tire). Remember that your bike is overturned and it is worth considering the direction of travel. In the case of disc brakes, it is difficult to confuse, since it is necessary that the disc hits exactly between the pads.
We tighten the nuts or tighten the eccentric
If you have rim brakes, you need to return them to their original condition. We check that the wheel does not dangle, turns freely and the brake functions, otherwise we check everything again point by point.
How to remove the front wheel?
Now carefully turn the bike upside down. In this case, it turns out that he stands on the handlebars and saddle quite steadily. At this stage, you should carefully monitor so that the equipment attached to the handlebars (bike computer, bell, bike headlight, etc.) is not damaged. In addition, it is best to place a cloth under the gear selectors to avoid scratching them. If your bike has hydraulic disc brakes (a hose with brake fluid comes from the brake lever, and not a regular shirt with a cable), then it is not recommended to keep the bike upside down for a long time, in order to avoid air getting into the hydraulic line, since if this happens, you will need to pump brakes (although the process is not complicated, but rather laborious).
Next, we look at how the wheel is fixed to you: is it an ordinary nut or an eccentric (small lever).
3.1. If your wheel is secured with a nut, then you need to take two suitable keys. Throw one on one side, the second. on the other, and turn one of the keys counterclockwise, holding the other in place. It is not necessary to unscrew the nuts all the way, but simply loosen until the wheel can be safely removed.
3.2. If your wheel is fastened with an eccentric, then everything is generally simple. no tools needed. We pull this eccentric towards ourselves, as shown in the figure, after which it is necessary to unscrew it a little more counterclockwise, holding it on the back side with your hand until it becomes possible to pull out the wheel.
At the last stage, simply pull the wheel up, and if you did everything correctly, it can be easily removed. On bicycles with disc brakes, do not press the brake lever with the wheel removed, as this may compress the pads, and you will have to tinker with them too.
Installing the rear wheel
The installation process is also similar to the installation of the front wheel, with a few exceptions: the chain must be seated correctly. To do this, we bring the wheel to the attachment points, put the chain on the sprocket and then put the wheel in place. True, a situation may arise in which it seems to you that the chain is twisted, and in order to unravel it, you will need to remove it. This is not true. You just need to twist it back and forth, imagine how it was installed before on the stars and most importantly. do not panic. That seems to be all. Now you have mastered the art of removing and installing wheels.
Removing a wheel from a bike?
If you have never done something, then you may think that it is difficult to do it. If you have never removed the wheels from a bicycle before, then you may also be afraid that you will not cope, especially with the rear wheel (after all, there is a chain, a bunch of stars and this tricky derailleur!). But now we will tell you everything about this simple operation. There is nothing supernatural here. In short, we have already touched on this issue in the article on how to disassemble a bicycle, and now we will open this topic a little wider. You will have to remove the wheel not only if you need to disassemble the bike for transportation or storage, but also in order to replace the camera, tire or spokes (we will devote a separate article to what the wheels of a bicycle consist of), get rid of the figure eight.
How to remove wheels from a bicycle with rim brakes
If you have rim brakes, release them first. To do this, slide the brake levers towards each other and lift the cable lock up.
If you need to remove both wheels, release both brakes at once so that you don’t have to turn the bike over again. If you have tires with a large tread or they are large in diameter by themselves, then you will have to deflate a little air from the tubes. Now turn the bike upside down (if you have any accessories installed on your handlebars that can be damaged in this position, it is better to remove them in advance). The bike will stand stable enough for any operation, but if you have hydraulic brakes, it is better not to leave it in this position for a long time. air can get into the hydraulic line, which will entail a not very difficult, but tedious and time-consuming process of bleeding the brakes.
How to remove the rear wheel of a bike
If you will be removing the rear wheel, to make it easier to do, loosen the chain as much as possible by switching it to the smallest sprockets. The wheel can be attached to the frame and to the front fork in two ways: with two nuts (less often) and with an eccentric. If your wheels are secured with nuts that screw onto the wheel axle, then you need two wrenches. You just throw one on one side and hold it in this position, and twist the other counterclockwise. It is not necessary to unscrew the nuts all the way; it is enough to loosen them to the extent that they do not interfere with the removal of the wheel. In the event that the wheels are fixed with an eccentric, then everything is even easier: you don’t even need tools. Pull the eccentric lever towards you, then, holding the axle on the opposite side, make a few turns counterclockwise until the wheel is free. Everything, the wheels can be removed. Yes, and the rear one too: just lift it up and remove the chain from the stars.
How to remove wheels from a bicycle with disc brakes
If you have disc brakes, just in case, insert something into the pads, in the slot where the disc was: if they accidentally close, it is very difficult to release them. And if you don’t open it, don’t put the wheel on. The role of something can be, for example, a piece of paper folded several times. And sometimes new bicycles come with a special plastic plug.
The assembly is carried out upside-down. To make it easier with the rear wheel, bring it to the attachment point, put the chain over the sprocket and after that insert the axle into place. Make sure the axle fits into the groove all the way and symmetrically. Are you convinced that there are no difficulties in installing the wheels on the bike? But there is one caveat: in order for the protector to work as it should, it must be oriented in the right direction. For the convenience of orientation, an arrow is drawn on the tire. in this direction the wheel rotates when the bicycle moves. But the fact that the bike is upside down when installing the wheels can be misleading. Therefore, take your time. This does not apply to the owners of bikes with disc brakes. it is impossible to confuse here. Do not over-tighten the eccentric; put the brakes back in place. Everything.
For adult bicycles
Bicycles for adults tend to be of almost the same dimension. There are minor differences depending on the type of bike.
Most often they prefer to choose a diameter of 26 inches. This size is very convenient to use and transport, and it also takes up relatively little space, which is very practical when stored in an apartment. For those who prefer high speed, the 27-inch version will do. Most often, this dimension is found in road, high-speed bicycles.
For people with a height of 180 cm or more, you can purchase 29-inch wheels, so it will be much more convenient to ride.
For children’s bicycles
For children’s bicycles, it is important that the big is not too large or too small, so there are many tables with the ratio of the child’s height to the diameter of the wheels. Thus, choosing a bike suitable for the age and height of the child is now not difficult. The main thing is to carefully study the parameters of the bike.
Wheel sizes for children’s bicycles range from 12 to 24 inches. Thus, you can pick up a children’s bike for absolutely any height.
Basically, the rear and front wheels of a child’s bike are the same size, however, on some tricycles, the two rear wheels can be reduced.
Starting at 24 inches, it is considered that the wheel is already suitable for a teenage bike. A larger diameter of 26 inches may already be suitable for an adult. Children’s bike wheels are usually cast, so they cannot be inflated. In case of damage, in most cases, you have to buy a new one.
Dimension of wheels
Often, in order to just ride a bike, there is no need to know exactly how to make the spokes of the wheel and how many inches it has, how to change the sprockets and what parts the bicycle fork consists of, as well as in which places the play is especially dangerous. Most bike owners only need to know how to change or inflate a tire and hang a loose chain on sprockets.
However, if a person is going to know a little more about his iron horse, or is even going to assemble his own bicycle on his own, he must have sufficient knowledge in this area in order to know well what parts it consists of, how it can be assembled and disassembled, how to produce repairing a tire, straightening a figure eight, spacing a wheel or, for example, changing an asterisk, and not just being able to pump a deflated tube.
In order for the bike to be well suited to its owner, it was comfortable to ride on it, and also in order for it to be as convenient and functional as possible, it is necessary to choose the right size. Most often, attention is paid to the size of the frame and wheels. Their size is considered to be the outer diameter, which is the outer side of the tire.
To find out the dimension, you just need to measure the diameter with a tape measure. As a rule, the value is measured in inches, so after that you will have to translate your measurements into this number system.
How to remove a wheel?
The main parts that make up a bicycle wheel are the rim, hub, spokes, tube and tire. Its dimension, for the most part, depends on the size of the rim and the length of the spokes, which practically reaches the radius of the wheel. In order to change any of the parts, it is necessary to remove the entire wheel. Most often, changing a wheel means replacing a bicycle camera, which has a habit of bursting, or when, for example, you need to edit a figure eight, but these cases are rare. This is usually not difficult to do. First you need to set the bike upside down. After that, it remains just to remove the wheels.
Removing the front wheel is extremely easy. To do this, you need to unscrew the fasteners on which it is held. As a rule, these are either nuts, or a small lever called an eccentric, it must be rotated 180 degrees. Once these elements are unscrewed, the entire structure can be easily removed from the fork. The main thing is not to forget that before that you need to remove the rim brakes, if any.
The rear wheel is removed in much the same way as the front, except that sometimes you have to remove the chain, while it is better to switch the speed to the smallest sprocket. In this case, the stars themselves can not be removed. Then the nuts or eccentric are also unscrewed, after which you can safely remove everything else.
After everything is dismantled, you can safely remove the tires and pull out the camera. Then you need to install a new camera and after that you need to rebuild everything. When installing the rear wheel, you need to pay attention to the chain. it can twist, so in order to avoid such a problem, you should carefully put everything in its place.
At the moment when it is already necessary to assemble the bike, it is worth paying attention to the fact that there should be no backlash at the place where the bicycle wheel is attached. Everything should fit snugly, but at the same time, the nuts and eccentric should not be overtightened.
When assembling the bike, you should pay attention to the fact that both the rear and front wheels must spin forward.
After everything is assembled, you can completely pump the chamber with a pump.
- It is best to slowly inflate the chamber with a pump when it is not completely covered by the tire. In this way, twisting can be avoided, which in turn eliminates the sudden rupture of the camera.
It is very important to inflate the tires correctly. If they are too soft or, conversely, too hard, they will burst very quickly. Each tire has special markings that indicate to what extent they can be inflated. There is no need to frequently inflate the cameras, especially if they are new. You can ride with these for a couple of months without thinking about the fact that they need to be pumped up.
How to remove play in the wheel
Backlash is a small gap in the parts of the bike. Its presence can lead to rapid damage to the bike.
2,600 Mile E-Trike: Repairing Bent Axle on Schwinn Meridian
If there is any play in the front wheel, the first step is to tighten all the nuts. The main thing in this business is to make sure that they are not overtightened, otherwise they will break. If this does not help, it is worth checking the bearings to see if they are intact. In this case, some cyclists advise to completely replace the wheel.
If backlash is found in the rear wheel, then it is also worth tightening all possible reasons for the weakening of parts. If this does not help and the backlash remains, most likely the case is in the bushing, and you will have to either sort it out or change it completely. As a last resort, I have all the rear wheel.
