How to remove the pedal hub on a bicycle

Bicycle pedal device

The design of bicycle pedals is very similar in principle to the front wheel hub. Unless, instead of spokes, a platform is fixed on it under the cyclist’s foot, and there is a thread on its axis with which it is attached to the connecting rod. Therefore, below we will consider what a bicycle pedal usually consists of. But before that, it should be clarified that today on the market for bicycle parts, pedals are divided into three (this is not counting the division for different bicycles) main groups: classic, platforms and contact.

In this article, we took a quick look at the different types of bicycle pedals and which ones are better. Now we can confidently say that for each type of bike, those that were specially designed for it should be used. On mountain ones, for example, you can install almost any type of pedals, and platforms are better suited for a freeride bike. But the main thing when using bicycle pedals is to timely carry out maintenance, disassembly, lubrication and, if necessary, repairs (all the more, removing them from the bike is not such a difficult task).

Lubricate the pedals without completely disassembling them

If you find that the pedals have become difficult to rotate, and there is no way to disassemble them at the moment, then lubrication without complete disassembly may be a temporary solution. For this, you can use almost any liquid oil. In my case, I used liquid oil for sewing machines I-20.

remove, pedal, bicycle

But let’s clarify right away that this is only a temporary solution; in the future, a complete lubricant change should be performed.

  • We put the bike on its side so that the pedal, which will need to be lubricated, “looks” with its end straight up.
  • Remove the plug at the end with a screwdriver (or other improvised means).
  • Slowly pour liquid sewing machine oil (about 2 ml.) Inside the pedal (while you can rotate it slowly).
  • Install the plug and, without lifting the bike, quickly rotate the pedal for 10 seconds.
  • We put the bike on the wheels and pedal several times. It should spin easily and for a long time.

This completes the process of lubricating the bicycle pedal without completely disassembling it. Over time, liquid oil will still leak out of its cavities, and the problem will return. Therefore, as free time appears, you should still disassemble and replace the grease in the bearings.

The form factor of this type of pedal is a monolithic wide platform made of aluminum or magnesium by casting or milling (although some of them are made of high-strength plastic). In fact, the body of the part is one whole product, inside which there is also a threaded axle, bearings, washer and locknut. They can additionally have reflectors and hook pins screwed into the body. The latter prevent the sole from slipping on the bicycle pedal.

The advantages of this type of pedal include increased durability, which is why they are often used on BMX bikes. Although they can also be installed on mountain, road and city bikes. Not recommended for road racing due to heavy weight.

Cons: slightly more expensive and heavier than classic pedals.

Assembling the bicycle pedal

After we have decided how we will lubricate the bearings, we will proceed to assembling and installing the pedals on the bike.

  • Apply grease to the second bearing cup. You do not need to overlay it too much, but it is also not worth saving. The golden mean will be to apply so much grease that you can “glue” the bearing balls to it so that they do not fall out.
  • We put the balls of the second bearing in the cup. For convenience, it is better to use tweezers. It is important not to confuse them with the first and count carefully so that everyone is in place.
  • We set the axis carefully. We do this slowly so as not to displace the balls of the second bearing. After the axle is inserted into the pedal body, make sure that it does not fall out back.
  • We apply grease to the cup of the first bearing in the same way as in the second.
  • We put the balls of the first bearing in the cup.
  • We screw the cone onto the axle and adjust its tightening. To do this, we gradually tighten it and check that there is no axle backlash in the pedal body (longitudinal and transverse). A minimum tightening should be achieved at which backlashes will be completely absent. The pedal should rotate easily.
  • We put on the washer, tighten the fixing nut and close the hole with a plug.

At this point, the pedal lubrication and assembly process is complete, you can install it on your bike. When installed, the right pedal is twisted into the crank arm clockwise, and the left pedal counterclockwise.

Clipless pedals are mainly used on mountain bikes or road bikes. Although some bike travelers fit them on hybrid bikes as well. The main difference from the previous ones is the toe, which engages with the mechanism on the sole of the specialized cycling shoe. This design allows you not only to push the pedal down while driving, but also to pull it up, which increases pedaling efficiency and reduces the effort expended when pedaling.

We examined the main varieties, but we will talk about other types and how to choose pedals for a bicycle in one of the following articles.

Pedal design

They are not all the same and you need to know a little about their construction. So, the pedal is part of a system that includes a set of sprockets, a crank carriage and, in fact, a set of axles, platforms, bearings and accessories. on this below.

Structurally, a bicycle pedal consists of several parts:

  • The axle is a metal pin that is screwed into the connecting rod. Provides the basis for the rest of the structure.
  • Platform. a plane that contacts the foot and is fixed on the axis.
  • Bearings. the assembly that connects the axle and platform, allowing rotation.
  • Fittings. bolts and nuts that fix all the components of the pedal. Unscrewed during disassembly.

On the platform, the pedals are divided into contact (with fastening for special shoes) and ordinary. The method of removal depends on the type: for contact mechanisms, the fastening scheme is a little more complicated. Combined options, combining, on the one hand, an ordinary platform, and on the other, a contact device, are no different in terms of dismantling from contact.

Some features

Since the system is constantly exposed to the environment against a background of severe mechanical stress, torsional problems can arise. In this case, two methods are used:

  • Soaking the bike pedal in kerosene or solvent to remove as much dirt as possible that is blocking rotation.
  • Heating of the connecting rod and axle. Slight deformation helps loosen the threads and remove the axle.

It is also important to carefully tighten the axle during installation so as not to damage the threads, which is a considerable problem in case of subsequent removal.

How to unscrew the pedals on a bike?

The pedal is a simple part, but due to some mounting features and a very long service life, not every cyclist is able to remove them from their bike on their own. Why remove the pedals?

  • Change them after damage.
  • Pedal lubrication.
  • Connecting rod repair or replacement.

First, let’s look at how they are arranged, what types are there, what features should be considered, what tools to prepare before work.

Removing the pedals

After preparation, you can proceed to the removal process. For conventional mechanisms, it looks like this:

  • We move the system to the working side. in the direction of the steering wheel.
  • We try to carefully unscrew the pedals from the connecting rod.
  • Remove the plug at the end of the platform, open the lock nut.
  • Unscrew the lock nut, holding the axle at the connecting rod with the second key.
  • Remove the washer (also at the end).
  • Unscrew the cone.
  • We remove the platform from the axle, holding the bearings (it is better to remove them separately, if they are bulk, then put a rag or sheet so that they do not roll far).
  • Pedal removed and disassembled!

It is important not to forget that the left and right pedals are unscrewed from the connecting rod in their direction: on the right axis. the right thread, on the left. the left.

Contact devices are a little more difficult to disassemble, but they will not cause any problems. when twisting and disassembling, a puller is used, which should hold the axis with a small contact pad.

Required tools and materials

Before removing the pedals, it is necessary to prepare the tool and auxiliary materials that are most likely to be needed.

  • lubrication. it is recommended to clean and lubricate the removed parts;
  • cleaning rags;
  • kerosene or solvent. in case the axles do not unscrew or there are large contaminated areas.
  • an adjustable wrench is a universal solution, a small one is desirable, otherwise it will be difficult to get to the nut;
  • open-end wrench for 15. fits almost all models;
  • bicycle kit. in case of emergency;
  • pedal wrench. supplied by manufacturers for non-standard nuts and just in sets;
  • puller. addition to the foot pedals. a standard tool, often supplied by the manufacturer, serves to hold the axle when turning to the side with a wrench.

Removing the pedals from the bike is easy enough, but don’t forget about preparing tools and materials, as well as possible problems. The main thing is to keep the entire system in order, since in case of damage or other problems, the inconvenience of using the bike will be very great.

Remove the steering wheel

Unscrew the bolts located on the stem of the steering column, they tightly fix the steering wheel in one position.

Do not lose the lock plate after removing the last bolt.

Pedal device

Before removing the pedals, first you need to familiarize yourself with the structure of this unit. These steps must be performed before any such repair operations. The pedal consists of several elements, and each model can have a different design, namely:

  • the axle is a special metal pin that is screwed into the connecting rod. She is the base for the rest of the details;
  • platform. a flat surface in direct contact with the sole and located at the end of the axis;
  • bearings. the elements necessary to connect the previous parts into a single mechanism, it is they that allow the platforms to rotate;
  • accessories. a variety of bolts and nuts that hold all the components of the pedal together. When disassembling, the fasteners are unscrewed with special tools.

Depending on the platform, pedals are divided into two groups: contact pedals, in which it is assumed that there is a special mount for cycling shoes, and standard models.

Removal of simple devices does not require much effort, and contact mechanisms with more complex latches are not easy to dismantle.

Remove the plug

Pull the fork out of the frame so as not to lose the bearing ring from the bottom cup.

Pulling up, remove the bearing ring and cup from the frame.

Remove the right connecting rod

Remove the right connecting rod in exactly the same way as you removed the left one. There is an asterisk on the right connecting rod. If there is a need to replace it, unscrew the bolts that hold the sprocket on the connecting rod with a hex wrench.

How to disassemble pedals on a bicycle

First, let’s look at the simplest pedal problems (crackling, crunching) that can occur:

  • It is necessary to check for any damage to the pedal (cracks, chips, etc.);
  • Check the place of attachment of the pedal axle to the connecting rods, over time it can weaken or moisture and sand can get into the connection. For prophylaxis, you can unscrew, carefully wipe the axle thread and the connecting rod itself, grease with thick grease and tighten again;
  • We check the pedal for backlash. To do this, we hold the pedal axis and try to move the platform in different directions with our hands. If there is a backlash, then this is corrected by tightening the lock nut, which is located under the plug (see figure)
  • If the pedal is spinning tightly or there is play, it is advisable to completely bust the bicycle pedal. It will not take you a lot of time. Let’s get started:

All you need to remove the pedals from the bicycle crank is an adjustable wrench.

The pedal axis usually has several edges, which allows you to unscrew it without much effort.

  • Remove the pedal cover with a screwdriver, which is located at the end;
  • Unscrew the lock nut, while holding the axle with a key;
  • Removes the lock washer;
  • Unscrew the cone;
  • We take out the bearings (Be careful, as the balls can roll in different directions)
  • Removes the pedal platform from the axle.
  • Pedal types

    • regular (platform);
    • contact;
    • combined.

    Each of the types of pedals has its own specifics: the first is created for any footwear, the contact type exists for grip with sports shoes and the universal third type, which has a platform on one side and a clutch mechanism on the other. The method of disassembly also depends on the type of part. The mechanism of conventional pedals is simpler and faster to disassemble.

    Pedal design

    All pedals, despite their different features, have a common design:

    • Platform. the surface on which the foot rests, which is fixed on the axis.
    • Metal axis. a pin made of metal. Has a thread and is screwed into the connecting rod.
    • Bearings. provide torque. Serves as a connecting element between the axle and the platform. There are simple bulk and cartridge bearings that differ in weight and quality.
    • Bolts, nuts.

    It should be noted that the design of the pedals is not as simple as it seems at first glance. Therefore, before tackling such problems, for example, how to remove the axle of a bicycle pedal, you should carefully study the overall design.

    Removing the pedal from the bike: step by step instructions

    So, let’s look at the main steps on how to remove a pedal from a bicycle without a puller:

    • Using a screwdriver, remove the plug from the end of the part.
    • We unscrew the platform from the connecting rod using an adjustable wrench. Right pedal counterclockwise, left pedal clockwise.
    • We unscrew the control nut. At the same time, we hold the connecting rod axis with the second key.
    • Remove the washer, which is located at the end of the pedal.
    • We remove the platform from the axle and at the same time hold the bearings. Dismantling ready.

    With clipless pedals, the circuit is a little more complicated. Therefore, before removing the pedal from the bike, you must have a special device. The connecting rod has a thread into which the puller is screwed in and begins to squeeze the connecting rod from the axis. At the end of the work, we put the pedal in place, check the strength of the part, and install the plug.

    Pedal types

    • regular (platform);
    • contact;

    Pedal Features

    Constant mechanical stress on the pedal can cause rotational problems. To quickly deal with them, it is necessary to heat the connecting rod and axle. As a result, the process of metal deformation will take place. This will help to easily remove the axle.

    To prolong the life of the pedal, use a chain treatment agent. Thanks to the solvent, stubborn dirt such as bolts can be removed. We use a solvent and a rag (napkin). In this case, the solvent can be replaced with kerosene. You should also not forget about the toxicity of these funds.
