Signs and causes of rear chainring problems
To begin with, let’s take a closer look at the ratchet mechanism of a multi-speed bike in more detail.
The pawl engages the rear wheel ratchet. The ratchet mechanism itself crackles slightly at the same time. This is the normal operation of the device. Otherwise, when there is no sound, it pulls the chain forward when driving idle.
The lack of engagement of the dog is usually associated with the malfunctioning of its spring, which pushes the dog. The following factors can serve as the reasons for malfunctioning:
- absence or high density of lubricant in the mechanism;
- breakage of the dog itself;
- the spring is worn out;
- a large amount of dirt;
- part of the dog is inside the mechanism.
The cleavage of the dog itself can still be repaired separately, but with its seat the situation is much more complicated. It should be noted that this type of fastening of transmission stars is inferior to a cassette in terms of reliability, since a break in the axis in half is far from uncommon. You will have to completely remove the ratchet and install a new one.
How to remove and replace a ratchet on a bicycle
The ratchet mechanism is widely used on sprocket speed systems and includes rear sprockets, drum, ring and bearings. Built-in freewheel prevents the sprockets from spinning backwards, thus maintaining the directionality of both the sprockets and the chain.
A feature of the ratchet on a bicycle for high-speed cycling is its complete replacement in case of critical wear of the stars. The system is screwed onto the thread of the rear wheel hub, which is fundamentally different from the cassette. In addition, one worn sprocket can be replaced on cassettes, which cannot be done on a ratchet.
The mechanism is operated under dynamic conditions, which is why it will sooner or later become unusable. We will talk further about the signs of failure and how to remove and change the ratchet yourself.
Removing the ratchet from the bike
It is not always possible to correctly see the malfunction when the ratchet mechanism on the bike itself is not always possible, so the best solution would be to disassemble it.
Before proceeding with the repair of the ratchet, it is necessary to correctly determine in which direction to
unscrew the nut. It is not necessary to lean heavily to one side or the other, otherwise the thread of the sleeve can be rolled up. If the thread is right-handed, screw it up counterclockwise, and put it on clockwise.
Behind the nut is a row of balls, which can themselves fall out of the mechanism. They must be carefully removed, cleaned of dirt and set aside. The disassembled device is cleaned of excess grease and foreign particles with gasoline or thinner.
The same goes for transmission stars. If the stars of the entire system are not worn, and the problem is in the threaded ring, it should be pulled out of the drum and replaced. Along the way, the dog and the spring are changing.
After the bulkhead, the ratchet is put back on the rear wheel hub. To do this, you need to carefully place the bearing balls in their seats, firmly install the mechanism and tighten with a wrench on the bushing. If the ratchet does not work and there is an overshoot of the chain at idle, most likely a new part is needed.
- Remove the old mechanism. This will not work without a puller, do not forget a special key.
- Inspect the rear hub axle.
- Mount the new part on the bushing.
It is recommended to hang a new chain together with the ratchet so that there is no imbalance between the new sprockets and the worn chain. It is also useless to put the part on the damaged axle of the hub itself.
If the output of the transmission mechanism is too high, it will be rational to supply a new spare part. In most cases, the problem of malfunctioning ratchets is solved by a simple bulkhead and cleaning from dirt. Finally, do not forget to lubricate the newly assembled parts.
How to disassemble tubeless tires with your own hands
All of the above operations will also work for tubeless tire removal. However, there is one nuance that should be remembered: very often the edges of such tires are literally welded to the rim, so it can be difficult to tear them off without damaging them.
And shock methods of disassembly in the case of tubeless tires are dangerous to use. To carefully separate the edge of the tire from the rim, it is advisable to use an ordinary jack, which is either tied to the wheel with a belt or placed under some kind of support (if you had to change the tire on the road, then the bumper of the car can serve as a support).
Installing a new tire
We put on a new tire on one “edge” of the wheel, so that we have a free for inserting the camera.
Quick Cycling Tip: How to Remove a Tight Tire the Easy Way
We take a new chamber (deflated) and, starting with the nipple, we lay it along the rim.
While the camera is not yet closed, pump it up a little to make sure that it is laid flat and not twisted anywhere. If the camera is kinked or twisted during the installation process, it will most likely burst as soon as you get on the bike. Agree, you don’t need such unnecessary frustrations, because these are not only spoiled plans, but also additional financial costs.
Now you need to “tuck” the tire into the rim. In the first steps, this is done manually, but at the end, editing will be required again. You can do it with one, but it’s better to use two. Use it to pull the tire slightly towards you so that it fits easily into the rim. You can push the tire a little inward with the assembly so that it is better fixed. The main thing is that the mounting depth is the same throughout the entire circle.
After the wheel is closed, pump up the chamber to the desired state. Usually, the pressure you need is indicated on the tire, check it to get your pump set up correctly.
Now screw the cap on the nipple to fix the condition of the wheel.
It remains to put the wheel in place and that’s it. Now your bike is back on the move! Do a small circle on it at low speed to make sure everything is secured correctly and you feel comfortable. If necessary, inflate the chamber of the second wheel so that they are equally elastic. Many cyclists experience minor riding discomfort after replacing one camera. If everything is ok, you can go on the road. Suddenly what happens, you already know how to change the tire and you can do it even in field conditions.
How to remove a tire procedure
To remove a tire from a bicycle wheel, proceed as follows:
How to install a tire?
- We place the camera on the tire. Make sure it is not twisted. To do this, we slightly pump it up with a pump.
- We put on the tire. This must be done carefully with a puller. First we put one side inside the rim. Then we press the valve in the spool, release the air and put the tire on the other side with a spatula. It is necessary to check whether the camera has become correctly and slowly inflate it, paying attention to whether the tire has become even.
- We put the wheel in place. Put on the chain, fix the brakes.
How To Change A Tyre With No Tools | Mountain Bike Maintenance
There is nothing difficult in replacing. Even beginners can handle this. The main thing is to remember that everything must be done carefully. Tires constantly require replacement, and, in general, it is difficult to protect yourself from punctures. Therefore, a little effort and time, the availability of the necessary tools. and replacing the tire will not be difficult.
Benefits of using mounting blades
To remove a tire from a bicycle wheel without any tools at hand, you need to be an experienced bike mechanic. If you are not, then it makes sense to use edits. These are special plastic paddles sold as a set of several. Their main advantage is the material from which they are made. The fact is that the use of metal tools at hand (keys or screwdrivers) will most likely damage the rim or the camera cord. Mounting blades avoid such negative consequences. How to perform disassembly with its help, we will now find out.
We take out the punched camera
To remove the damaged camera from the wheel, it is necessary to remove it from the bike. it is much more convenient to work this way. Then follow the step-by-step instructions:
1.Unscrew the protective cap from the nipple. If necessary, completely deflate the wheel. This will make the job easier, since there will be no unnecessary resistance.
2.Using the razor, hook the edge of the tire and pull it out of the rim. Special tools allow this procedure to be carried out quickly and as painlessly as possible. If you don’t have a rigger, you can try using any thin and sturdy object, such as a spoon. Its handle has repeatedly helped out cyclists who did not have repair tools at hand. Make sure that it does not bend over.
Important: The tool should not have sharp ends, so a screwdriver is not the best solution, although it does fit the intended shape. You can only damage the wheel more with it. If you want to keep the tire, don’t.
Optimally use two assemblies. First, pick up the edge of one, then, when you fix the position, in 2-3 centimeters, pick up the tire with the second mounting. This will be followed by a release of pressure, and the work will go easier. Continuing to support the first assembly with your hand, continue to pry the tire in a circle with the second until it is completely released from the rim.
4.Now that one edge of the tire is completely removed, release the nipple and remove the damaged tube.
We will consider the installation process with the installation of both a new camera and a tire. If you keep the old camera, skip the first step.
The process of mounting a bicycle tire is the same, but in reverse order.
For installation it is necessary to perform the following steps:
- Put the tire on the rim, then begin to put it into the rim gradually, first from one side;
- Install the tube by placing the edge of the tire inside the rim;
- Repeat the whole set of actions with the other edge of the tire, until you finally put it on.
It remains to mount the wheel and close the brakes. When handling the tire, keep in mind that the tube is made of a soft and thin material. All actions must be carried out so as not to damage the camera.
Removing and replacing a bicycle tire yourself is not a big deal. Most cyclists do this job successfully the first time. A careful approach to work and the availability of convenient accessories are all you need to successfully remove the tire.
