Advantages of loose-type rolling bearings:

  • ease of removal and installation;
  • can be adjusted in the field;
  • it is permissible to change components separately.

Disadvantages include frequent adjustments and the need to clean up trapped dust and dirt.

Prom bearings do not require adjustment, lubrication or cleaning. The position of the balls, the amount of lubricant in the closed housing are kept constant. No water or abrasive gets inside the cartridge.

However, if the bearing is worn out, it will need to be replaced entirely. Far from civilization, this is problematic. The price of “prom” is significantly higher compared to the cost of bulk.

Ceramic and ceramic-metal bearings should be noted separately. They are completely or partially made of ceramics, due to which they have higher corrosion resistance compared to their metal counterparts. In addition, they are better able to withstand temperature extremes. Parts of this type are installed on high-end bicycles.

Replacing wheel hub bearings

The hub is not just a wheel pivot. Without the built-in articulation mechanism, forces would be transmitted unevenly to it, and the bike would not be able to move. The same symptoms appear when the bearings are worn out.

Disassembling the hub is as easy as disassembling a fork. For the rear wheel, the procedure will be slightly more complicated than for the front wheel, since you will first need to remove the cassette with sprockets. On a single-speed bike, the retaining ring and the sprocket itself are dismantled.

In general, the disassembly looks like this:
1. Remove wheels from dropouts.

Dismantle the sprockets with a cassette puller and a locking whip. On single speed, open the stopper with a screwdriver or a special spreader.

Unscrew the fastening nuts with a 15 wrench. For the rear wheel hub, unscrew the nut on the side opposite to the stars.

Pull out washers and bearing units. Bulk ones are being moved, industrial ones are being replaced by new ones.

Clean parts and replace damaged components.

Pull out the axles, wipe the inner cavities of the bushings.

Reassemble in reverse order. It is important to place the bearings correctly and press the cones in the same way as before disassembly. In no case should it be skewed, the details should exactly fall into their rightful places. It is not advisable to swap them during a bulkhead. This threatens backlash and deterioration of wheel travel.

New bearings are selected in advance according to the old ones. they must be the same as they were before the repair. Lubrication is the key to rebuilding and replacing (in the case of “bulk”). When installing the “flush”, the assembly itself does not need to be lubricated, only the inner cavities of the bushing and the axle. After installation, we check the performance of the wheels: smooth running without play and clamps indicates that the parts are installed correctly.

So, the bicycle bearing, as we found out, is the most important part in every moving unit. Its good condition, timely maintenance and replacement will ensure good running characteristics and travel safety.

Self-disassembly of the direct drive wheel motor

Electric vehicles of TM Volta Bikes are equipped with motor wheels and high quality components that do not need regular maintenance for a long time. Almost all direct drive wheel motors, the first of which we started selling in 2007, are serviceable and work with our customers, without any repair and maintenance to this day.

During the warranty period (1 year), malfunctions of the motor of wheels with direct drive TM Volta bikes account for 1. 2% of the total number of sold components. The reason for their failure is usually a malfunction of the Hall sensors due to overheating of the wheel motor, water ingress, or the formation of condensation from a temperature drop. Sometimes the Hall sensor fails for no apparent reason. If during the operation of the wheel motor there are any signs of a malfunction, we recommend contacting our service center, where Volta Bikes specialists will diagnose and, if necessary, perform the required repair work in a qualified manner.

For people who want to independently diagnose and eliminate possible malfunctions of a direct drive wheel motor, in this article I will tell you how to disassemble and assemble a wheel motor without breaking anything.

There can be several reasons for disassembling the wheel motor: this is a complete failure of the electric motor, jerking when driving, extraneous noise when rotating a suspended wheel, failure of any elements of the wheel motor as a result of mechanical damage.

The desire to replace the grease in the friction units of the wheel motor (in this case, in the bearings) cannot be a reason for disassembling it: low operating temperature (usually no more than 60 degrees Celsius) and low rotation speeds of the wheel motor have a minimal effect on lubricants. However, bearings, even of very high quality, wear out over time and play and noise appear in the mechanism.

Disassembling a brushless direct drive wheel motor is a relatively simple procedure that requires a minimum of tools and skills.

To disassemble the spoked wheel motor, it is not required to free it from the spokes and rim.

1.Unscrew the bolts of both covers with a hexagonal wrench (fig. 1)

With light blows of a hammer through a wooden spacer along the end of the electric motor shaft, knock out the cover (together with the anchor) a few millimeters, then remove it with screwdrivers (Fig. 2.3)

3.Remove the second cover in the same way.

The rotor of the motor is now held in the stator by the force of the permanent neodymium magnets. Extraction of the rotor will require caution and a sufficiently large effort: very powerful magnets are used in the TM Volta bikes motor wheels (Fig. 4)

In order to remove the rotor, you need to fix the opposite edges of the wheel motor housing on any supporting surfaces (for example, we specially used improvised means), so that the rotor hangs in the air, held only by magnets, and then gently squeeze it down without damaging the magnets and keeping the rotor from falling (see Figure 5).

After removing the rotor, you can proceed with the necessary troubleshooting and repair work.

Support bearings of the axle, or shaft of the wheel motor, are pressed into the covers of the wheel motor; sealed bearings are used here, which are lubricated for life. If the bearing has a noticeable backlash, sticks or makes noise when turning the inner ring relative to the outer ring, it should be replaced.

Three Hall sensors located at the end of the rotor (Fig. 6) are secured with silicone glue. To replace the sensor, pry it with a screwdriver and remove it from the groove. Secure the new sensor with silicone as well. Make sure that the hardened silicone does not protrude beyond the geometric dimensions of the rotor.

When assembling, pay attention to the location of the cable: it must be laid to the side in cases when the motor-wheel rests on the end of the shaft (Fig. 7)

Be sure to place the spring washer on the opposite shaft end (fig. 8) before installing the cover.

We recommend that before installing the covers, lubricate their adjacent surfaces with automotive sealant. Moisture resistance of the wheel motor is an important indicator of its durability.

The wheel hub caps with shaft support bearings center the rotor relative to the stator. Honor follows this when tightening the cap bolts: first tighten all cap bolts 3-5 turns, and only then finally tighten them.

Check the quality and ease of rotation of the shaft at the end of the assembly.
