My name is Vyacheslav. It was boring during the coronavirus crisis, so I started running. I ran 350 km in 3 months and ran the Moscow Half Marathon on 08/02/2020.

After running, I decided to try a road bike. I, who have not yet seen the contact pedals, have already looked after the slots for sprints for Ironman for 2021, it happens. I chose the most budgetary bike and equipment, so the scope for imagination and improvements is open.

Arduino Code

I picked up the parameters. moreover, some speeds for switching up and down required a different angle of rotation of the servo.

3D printed the case for the Arduino, servo and battery. Attached the body to the frame, connected the cable from the servo to the cable of the standard system (photo of the KDPV, see above).

The first tests showed the survivability of the system, so I decided to add features.

By adding a Hall sensor and a magnet on the leading star, I got a cadence sensor, now I can change gears automatically depending on the drop in cadence.

With the addition of a 3-axis gyroscope and an MPU6050 accelerometer, I had to tinker with the calibration. Knowing the angle of the bike, we can switch gears automatically uphill and downhill.

In general, automation is rather distracting, having two buttons with instant switching is always more convenient to change the speed yourself.

Electronic gear shifting

In my road bike, the gears are shifted in the middle of the handlebars, so you have to let go of the ram to constantly shift, it’s very inconvenient. In more expensive shifting systems on the ram itself, but there one system is more expensive than my entire bike.

My task was to make convenient and fast electrical switching in parallel with minimal modifications and preserving the existing switching option.

For the prototype, what was at hand was used. Having measured the movement of the cable (22mm) and the required force from the native system, I chose the ds3115mg servo.

Elementary design: Arduino nano battery, two servo buttons.

Friction transmission

This type of electric drive, although it is found on the market, is not very popular. Its principle is simple. Tips for choosing a bike with speeds

Today, high-speed bicycles prevail on sale, so there is plenty to choose from. All classes fall into this family:

To choose the right speed model for yourself, you need to decide where and on what routes you plan to drive. For example, for city riding, you do not need to take a professional mountain or road bike with a lot of gears, a classic road model or a bicycle on a planetary hub will suffice. But there are some subtleties here: it is best to control the speed with both brakes at once, starting from the rear: this way the pads will last longer, and the risk of accidentally flying over the steering wheel (for example, if the rear brake cable breaks on a particularly steep slope and emergency braking by the front one) is much lower.

Owners of fixed gears that are not equipped with brakes will have a harder time. If the descent is not very steep, and your feet are strapped to the pedals, you can simply relax, but otherwise you can use a technique similar to the one above. But the efforts should be directed not in the direction of the pedal stroke, but in the opposite direction. The pedal should be pushed when it is about to go back.

We go up the hill

Instead of circular uniform pedaling, you should switch to sequential: that is, you need to press on the pedals alternately with different feet. The easiest way to do this is by standing on them, and alternately transferring body weight to one or the other leg. But sometimes, if the climb is especially steep, this is not enough (and it is problematic to do this on a fixed gear).

In this case, a technique similar to rowing will help, but it is not the arms that work in it, but the legs. You should bring your tailbone back as much as possible (you can generally hang it from the saddle) and stretch your arms, imagining that we are hanging on a horizontal bar. If you do not lean your tailbone against a bicycle saddle, your back muscles will also participate in pedaling, which will further increase its effectiveness. The pedals should be pushed alternately, and the maximum force should be applied at the moment when the pedal is at the highest point of the trajectory, the force vector should not be directed downward, but forward. For more authenticity, you can imagine that instead of a rudder, you grabbed the oars.

Another trick: on a wide road, you can move not straight up, but at an angle, that is, with a snake. To do this, simply shift the wheel to the opposite side after a few jerks. Let the distance traveled increase, but the steepness of the ascent becomes less.

Well, if the slide is too steep, you can spare your pride by dismounting and rolling your bike into it with your hands. No wonder the fans of this bike joke that in fact they have not one gear, but three. sitting, standing and walking.

How to remake Singlespeed

Let’s try to turn a regular bike into a high-speed one with a single shifting system. For this you will need:

  • singlespeed;
  • non-brake bushing;
  • v-brakes or pliers, front and rear;
  • rear cassette 6 stars;
  • two chains for a high-speed bike;
  • switch;
  • shifter;
  • switch cable;
  • clamps.
  • spanners;
  • squeezing the chain;
  • cassette remover;
  • grinder.

At the very first stage, you should choose the type of brakes, which we will then install on the bike. We look at the feathers and the fork. if they do not have seats for the brakes (they are not provided on classic frames), then we purchase pliers. If there are sockets, we take v-brake. Another, more complicated, option is to place a similar fork under the vectors, and put a tick back. In this case, you will have to remove and change the plug.

How to convert a single speed bike into a multi speed bike. step by step instructions:

Remove the rear wheel with a wrench and disassemble it.

Open and remove the chain. you will no longer need it.

Make one of the two chains, with 128 links for a 6-speed cassette. To unclamp additional links to the standard chain and connect them, you will need a squeeze.

Next, you need to put a non-brake hub in the rear wheel. The work is divided into 3 stages: dismantling a conventional bushing, re-spacing the wheel and installing a new bushing. It is quite difficult to do the repositioning, therefore it is better to entrust this work to the master. A simple option is to purchase a ready-made wheel with a 6-star cassette.

If you install the sprockets yourself, you will need a cassette remover.

It will not work to put the rear wheel on the stays of a standard frame. the speed hubs are wider. To do this, you need to unclench the feathers by 2-3 cm.This is easiest to do on the machine.

The next step is to install the derailer. the rear derailleur. Choose a device with an axle mount, because no special attachment for classic frames.

Apply front brake. standard procedure.

The front sprocket on single speed bikes has thicker teeth so the speed chain will not fit. We remove the star paired with a connecting rod, grind the teeth on a milling machine.

Assemble the bike: place the wheel on the feather dropouts, the chainring on the bottom bracket and clamp the chain.

When the rear wheel is in place, apply the rear caliper brake.

By changing the configuration of the transmission and installing a new braking system, a simple bike can be turned into a high-speed.

The high-speed bike has a multi-stage transmission, which fundamentally distinguishes it from the classic bicycle with one gear. A big problem for singspeed (single-speed) is steep and long ascents, especially without perpendicular slopes of the road. The low gears of the high-speed bike reduce the speed, but make it possible to overcome the hills without additional power costs. High gears allow you to accelerate the bike on level ground, and it will outperform singlespeed in speed.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Speed ​​Bike

For trips around the city on flat roads and simple rides in parks and embankments, the presence of a high-speed bike is not essential. A simple one-gear touring bike is fine here: it is both cheaper and does not require frequent maintenance.

Another thing is long trips on highways, dirt roads and, even more so, off-road. Here you will need a more stable bike that will pass under any conditions, save energy, and make the trip more comfortable. It is difficult to imagine a long tourist route on a single speed, to put it mildly, although, in principle, nothing is impossible.

Compared to a single-speed model, a bicycle with a multistage transmission has several advantages:

  • climbing hills in low gears;
  • less power costs in a headwind;
  • acceleration on flat areas;
  • maximum accuracy of adjusting the bike to specific riding conditions (especially on models with a large number of gears);
  • constant cadence, less fatigue;
  • the braking system of high-speed bikes is more powerful than singlespeeds.

Let’s see on the other hand how single-speed models outperform their rivals:

  • the bike is cheaper;
  • undemanding to maintenance of the transmission: the chain and sprockets are designed for almost the entire life of the bike;
  • if the chain is replaced, it is easily rubbed against the old stars;
  • singlespeed gives a good workout for all leg muscle groups on the rise;
  • allows you to develop the skill of high-frequency pedaling.

The controversial advantage of the single-speed model is the reduction in weight due to the absence of switches and cassettes. Only valid when comparing identical models with and without cassette. To put in one row, for example, a light road bike with speeds and a steel road road in this sense is wrong.

Today, high-speed bicycles prevail on sale, so there is plenty to choose from. All classes fall into this family:
