How to convert a mountain bike to a single speed bike

Hopefully my recent post, One Is Enough, has convinced some of you to try your hand at mountain biking alone. The good thing about singles riding is that you can do it cheaply by retrofitting a bike you already own for less than 30! You can spend a lot more, but the basic conversion will only allow you to ride in one gear and is ideal if you just want to try a solo sport. Converting an old bike to SS. Also a great way to breathe new life into it and finally get it out of the garage and hit the track again.

Riding my SS to help with the One Is Enough article. Brianw decided to convert his old 1991 Trek 830 to SS. We’ve only done a basic rework on his bike, and that’s what this article is about. Future updates are included at the end, however, if you want to make a full, bombproof conversion.

1. To the right the wheel back into the fork: If you have rim brakes, be careful not to dislodge the calipers when reinstalling the wheel. If you have disc brakes, place the rotor between the brake pads.

2. Tighten here: If you have a quick release here, fully install the wheel in the dropouts. Make sure the quick release is on the non-drive side of the bike, in line with the wheel. While holding the lever in place, tighten the nut on the opposite side and move the lever to the closed position. It should feel tight to the touch, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to close the lever. If you have Thru, here, match the hubs with the holes in the bottom of the fork. Look at which side of the fork there is a thread, and push it from the opposite side. Turn the lever clockwise to thread it into the fork. After tightening, move the lever to the closed position.

3. Flip the bike: If you have cantilever or rim brakes, make sure the brake cable is reconnected or tightened correctly.

4. Spin the wheel: When spinning the wheel, you make sure your brake pads are not rubbing against the rim or rotor. If your wheel isn’t spinning, it might be bent in the fork dropouts. Turn the bike over, Loosen here, push the wheel and tighten again here.

Helpful Hint: If you have hydraulic disc brakes, do not apply the front brake after you have removed the front wheel. The brake pads will move closer together and you will NOT be able to return the brake rotor between the pads. If your brake lever is accidentally compressed, the ideal shoe separation tool is a shoe separation tool. If you don’t have this tool, you can use a flat-blade screwdriver or credit card to insert a wedge between the two pads and gently separate them. Too much force can damage the pads. Also, make sure any tool you are using is clean and does NOT contaminate the brake pads. Change the wheel and press the brake lever several times to reset the pads.

Quick Connect or Through Here?

The quick release here has a 5mm rod with a cam lever on one side and a nut on the other, and its function is to allow you to remove the wheel from the bike without using a tool. The quick release here also allows you to remove the wheel instead of removing it. That will stay in the hub, all you have to do is move the lever to the open position and loosen the nut on the other side.

Some bicycle hubs (especially mountain bikes) require larger axles (12mm, 15mm or 20mm) called thru axles. These wasps also have a cam lever on one side of the hollow shaft and the other side is screwed into the fork. This system allows you to remove the wheel without using any tools, BUT you need to remove it from the hub to remove the wheel from the bike.

Disc brakes

Bikes that use disc brakes on the hub need special attention. Wheel disc brakes (Dual Pivot, Linear Pull, Cantilever, Sidepull, etc.) generally do not apply significant axle pressure. Disc brake systems are fork-mounted and apply a load to the rotor, which is attached to the hub.

There is an external load on the hub axle, which tends to push out of the overlay on the frame. It is especially important to secure the pin properly in disc brake systems.

Required details

Spacer kit. Get one that includes different sizes of spacers to fine tune the position of the rear gear for a truly straight chain line. Some cheaper kits only come with two spacers. I do not recommend them.

Rear hub. If your hub has a steel hub casing (common on most low end bikes) a cheap stamped cog will do, but if your hub has an aluminum hub casing you should get a custom SS cog with a wider base to avoid the hub casing extruding.

Tensioner. It keeps the chain in good condition and tightens and prevents it from falling. There is a small chance that you will not need it, but very small. Take one. You can always pick it up if it turns out that you don’t need it.

Chain. Most stainless steel rear cogwheels do not fit 9 prong chains, so you will need a stainless steel chain or 8 gear chain. If you are remodeling an old bike, it may already have an 8 speed chain on it, so DO NOT hesitate to reuse this chain on your SS setup unless it is too worn out.

Some companies offer stainless steel conversion kits that include spacers, teeth and tensioner, which is easier and cheaper than buying the parts separately.

A quick note on gearing: The gear ratio / combination you use depends on your skill level and where you live. Someone in Denver, Colorado probably needs lighter gear than someone in Savannah, Georgia. Ask in your area for recommendations.

How to remove a wheel on a bicycle.

Solid here

The rear frame pad in the solid axle can also have a gearshift mechanism that is bolted on. There must be a bolt and a nut that holds it. The wheel is mounted on a suspension. Quick release

The eccentric mechanism for fixing the axles of the wheels uses a hollow bushing equipped with a shaft, a lever, which works as a cam mechanism, and an adjusting nut. The eccentric mechanism for securing the axles of the wheels is equipped with two conical springs. The small end of the spring faces the axis and the large end faces outward. These springs make it easier to fit the wheel. If one or both springs are twisted or damaged, they can be removed. They don’t matter as long as the wheel is firmly attached to the bike.

The so-called “open cam” may require more tension. These levers have a cam mechanism and must be lubricated frequently.

How to put a wheel on a speed bike. When is it necessary

Like any vehicle, a bicycle must be inspected and repaired in a timely manner. One of the mandatory procedures is to separate one or all wheels from the frame. The reasons when dismantling is required may be:

Removing a wheel

It will be easier to work if you do it in a place where it is convenient to approach the bike from either side. Dismantling wheels from a bicycle with rim brakes is carried out as follows:

Before removing the front wheel, the eccentric clamp (located to the left of the hub) must be turned 180 °. On the right side of the sleeve, the nut is turned a couple of turns. It remains to release the front wheel from the bike by removing from the fork tip.

If the bike has disc brakes, then before removing the wheels, you need to take care that the discs do NOT accidentally close. Otherwise, you will have to spend a lot of time and effort on unclenching. To prevent this from happening, you need to insert an object (a piece of cardboard, folded paper) or a plastic plug (included in the kit) into the slot.

1. Disconnect the brake cable.

2. Set the reverse gear so that the chain is on the smallest sprocket.

3. Loosen the eccentric handle and carefully remove the wheel.

How to remake Singlespeed

Let’s try to convert a regular bike to a high-speed one with a single shifting system. For this you will need:

  • Singlespeed;
  • Non-brake bushing;
  • V-brakes or pliers, front and rear;
  • Rear cassette 6 stars;
  • Two speed bike chains;
  • Switch;
  • Shifter;
  • Switch cable;
  • Clamps.

Tools and working devices:

  • Spanners;
  • Chain squeezing;
  • Cassette remover;
  • Grinder.

At the very first stage, you should choose the type of brakes, which we will then install on the bike. We look at the feathers and the fork. if they have seats for the brakes (they are not provided on classic frames), then purchasing pliers. If there are sockets, we take v-brake. How to convert a single speed bike into a multi speed bike. Step by step instructions:

1. Remove the rear wheel with a wrench and disassemble it.

3. Make one of the two chains, with 128 links for a 6-speed cassette. To unclamp additional links to a standard chain and connect them, you will need a squeeze.

4. Next, you need to put a non-brake hub in the rear wheel. The work is divided into 3 stages: dismantling a conventional hub, re-spacing the wheel and installing a new hub. 5. If you install the sprockets yourself, you will need a cassette remover.

6. Putting the rear wheel on the stays of a standard frame will NOT work. the speed hubs are wider. To do this, you will need to open the feathers by 2-3 cm.This is easiest to do on the machine.

7. The next step is to install the derailer. the rear derailleur. You should choose a device with a mount on here, because. No special attachment for classic frames.

8. Apply front brake. standard procedure.

9. The front sprocket on single speed bikes has thicker teeth so the speed chain will not fit. We remove the star paired with a connecting rod, grind the teeth on a milling machine.

10. Assemble the bike: place the wheel on the feather dropouts, the chainring on the carriage and clamp the chain.

11.When the rear wheel is in place, apply the rear Caliper brake.

13. Connect the shifter and the switch, fasten the cable to the upper tube of the frame with clamps.

What are high-speed bicycles

By the type of transmission, bicycles with speeds can be divided into three types:

  • Dual Shifting: Mountain, Road and Hybrid bikes;

Speed ​​bikes

The high-speed bike has a multistage transmission, which fundamentally distinguishes it from the classic one-gear bike. A big problem for singspeed (single-speed) is steep and long climbs, especially without perpendicular slopes. The low gears of the high-speed bike reduce the speed, but make it possible to overcome the hills without additional power costs. High gears allow you to accelerate the bike on level ground, and it will outperform singlespeed in speed.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Speed ​​Bike

For trips around the city on flat roads and simple rides in parks and embankments, the presence of a high-speed bike is not essential. A simple one-gear touring bike is fine here: it costs less and does NOT require frequent maintenance.

The most common rear wheel hub failure is a loose cone or over-tightening. The weakening of the taper leads to an increase in the wheel axle play. The nipple must be of the same material as the spoke. Otherwise, due to electrochemical corrosion, it is difficult to tighten and replace the spoke. The spokes are tightened only with a spoke wrench, in no case with pliers or other handy tools.

Knitting needles:

  • Rolled knitting needle. budget option.
  • The drawn spoke is lighter in weight but more expensive.
  • The flat spoke is the most expensive, significantly superior to other types both in weight and in the resistance of the oncoming air flow.

Varieties of rear bicycle hubs, how they differ from each other

The hub is the base of the wheel. Here is the quality of the hub, its weight and size depends on the roll of the bike and the energy consumption of the cyclist during the ride. Bicycle hubs differ from each other in strength, the presence of additional elements and the level of protection from external climatic factors.

The hub is located in the center of the wheel and rotates on bearings. Collapsible balls or factory-made universal sealed bearings are used as bearings. The bearing carries all the pressure of the bike while riding, so its quality must be high.

Hub by means of spokes connected to the wheel rim. Outdated Torpedo bushings contain a brake drum inside the structure, with the help of which the cyclist brakes by reverse pedaling.

The modern bicycle hub features a ratchet mechanism and a cassette cassette that slides over the drum. On the ratchet hub, the bearings are closer to the center, so the load is NOT evenly distributed. Hubs of this type are installed on teenage or budget adult bikes.

The cassette hub is another popular type of rear hub. It has slots on which a cassette with stars is fitted and is fixed with a cassette nut. These bushings are more reliable, the bearings are further from the center of the hub, so the bike can support up to 120 kg.

The third type of rear hubs is a hub with a planetary gearshift system. It combines the functions of the hub and the gearshift of the bicycle.

The entire mechanism is located inside the hub and is protected from dust and moisture. The chain on a bicycle with such a hub lasts longer, as it does NOT change its position. The planetary hub has a high degree of reliability.

The SRAM 3-Speed ​​Planetary Hub design is very simple. But 5 and 7-speed is better not to disassemble. Planetary gears are installed in a special position. this requires a special tool.


Spoke is the order in which the hub, spokes and rim are fastened together. There are two main types of wheel lacing: “radial” and “cross”.

When viewed “radially” the spoke does not intersect with the others. When assembling “crosswise”, the knitting needle is crossed with the rest of the knitting needles several times, depending on the selected spoke method. On widespread 26-inch wheels more often use “three-cross” lacing.

Bushing lubrication (maintenance)

A tightly spinning wheel means the hub bearings require maintenance. To get to the bearings on the bushings, you must first remove the stars. This can only be done with a special puller. It is allowed to lubricate the bearings with liquid grease, fill it with a medical syringe.

Teflon-based grease has proven itself well. it is a widely used grease that is effective, versatile, and not the most expensive. However, this grease evaporates easily, so green grease can be mixed with Teflon-based grease to increase viscosity.

A crunchy sound of a spinning wheel after assembly means that sand has entered the bearing, or defects have appeared on the rubbing surfaces. Must be disassembled and re-lubricated or replaced Defective parts.
