How to put on a loose chain on a speed bike

Chain adjustment on speed bikes

To save money, some craftsmen “cut” the chain, that is, cut it and reduce the number of links. Of course, this option is also possible, but it is important to understand that a stretched chain is a worn out mechanism and it will not last long.

For people who still remember Salyut bicycles, the suggestion “to choose a new chain for a bicycle” sounds somewhat wild. The answer is simple: in those bicycles only one speed was provided, so the chain was constantly in a calm state and did not wear out as quickly as on modern bicycles.

No lock

If the bike has a chain without a lock, then you will have to press the axle out of the chain link. Also, this process will need to be carried out in order to reduce the number of chain links when necessary.

A special tool is needed to press out the chain axle. squeezing the chain. For this operation, you can select any link in the chain, the only condition is, when re-pressing it is better to use a new one, since after the operation the link loosens a little.

Insert the chain link into the tool and secure with the screw. Please note that in some chain releasers there are two seats, one for pressing the axle out (it is closer to the fixing screw), and the second one is used only for adjusting the axle. Tighten the squeeze screw carefully, thereby extruding the axle.

Do not push the axle out to the end if you plan to assemble a link with the same axle, otherwise it will be problematic to install it back.!

How to install a chain on a bike

Let’s start disassembling the bike chain. Everyone knows why you need a chain on a bicycle. Next, you need to put a chain on both sprockets of the bike. On regular road bikes, the chain is not that difficult to tighten. For some reason, then the chains served almost longer than the bicycle itself. The fact is that in such bicycles, the machine is responsible for the chain tension. In order to disconnect the bicycle chain, we installed a special lock on it, shown in Fig. 14.

An important element for the bike’s performance is the chain, the life of which depends on timely care. When working, it should not crack and creak. When adjusted correctly, the chain should have a slack of 10-12 mm. When pulled with your fingers, it should give in by 10-15 mm, and if this value is greater, then it must be pulled. Note that this is only relevant for bicycles or without derailleurs, or with planetary gears.

If the chain is too tight, it becomes very difficult to pedal on the bike, the parts of the chain drive wear out quickly. The amount of chain tension on a bike with a rear parallelogram derailleur is determined entirely by the force of the derailleur spring. But if the chain is too long, then this tensioner will not be able to compensate for its slack, and it will begin to hit the frame. This is especially true for bicycles with a short rear thrower.

This primarily applies to two-suspension bicycles. Very often, when installing a new chain on a high-speed bike, it is necessary to shorten its length, that is, remove several links. On double suspensions, it will be more correct to adjust the chain length by pressing the rear swingarm to the position when the front sprocket cassette is as far as possible from the rear ratchet.

The chain starts to slip when the tension is released due to its extreme tension. If this is not the first time you tighten the old chain, get ready to replace it soon. The bicycle chain is one of the most important parts of this mode of transport.

In addition, they are the driven link of the bicycle gearbox. At the same time, it is not difficult to guess that if the chain breaks off, the transport will not be able to go further. In the event of a collapse or breakage of the bicycle chain, with the best outcome, the driver will get off with the fact that he will not be able to go further. But often with this there are more serious consequences. For example, if there is no special guard on the rear wheel, the chain can fall into the spokes, but here the outcome is unfavorable in all cases.

The next danger in the event of chain breakage or loosening applies to those bicycles that do not have a handbrake. Before you start to tension the chain, it is important to understand one truth.

Another symptom that should alert the driver is if the chain began to slip. To begin with, the problem of sagging is most often encountered by owners of regular single-speed bicycles. The thing is that here the chain is not able to tension automatically, as in mountain or other similar types of bicycles. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, any chain has the ability to stretch, despite the fact that it is made of metal.

For bicycles, chains are produced with and without locks. In this article I will write how to remove the chain from the bike for cleaning and lubrication, or to replace it when it is already worn out.

Instruments

  • key for removing the rear wheel;
  • pliers for holding segments and pins;
  • squeeze. a device for pressing out pins, without a lock. the most important tool in the process.

Chain Removal Situations

Maintaining your bike is very important, and there may be several reasons for removing the chain:

  • Deep cleaning. it is recommended from time to time to remove all elements and clean from grease and accumulated abrasive.
  • Link damage and replacement.
  • Replacing a worn chain.
  • Length change with a new sprocket combination, e.g. on a mountain bike.

Home wear is primarily determined by elongation. An overstretched chain is cause for concern, as link misalignment will severely damage the sprockets and can be hazardous to derailleurs.

It is quite difficult to notice wear by eye, and to determine it there is an indicator. the length of 24 links:

  • if it is equal to 305 mm (304.8 value for a new set), everything is in order;
  • 306.5-307.5 mm. it’s time to change;
  • 307.5 mm. if the bike was still in use with such wear, then most likely the whole set of sprockets is damaged;
  • 308 mm. the value of the damaged transmission.

Objectively, it is recommended to service the transmission every 500 kilometers, but this value is not fixed, since 50 kilometers on rough terrain with an abundance of sand and dirt in terms of wear can correspond to another thousand on clean city roads.

Some people prefer to cut the chain, but the stretch is usually evenly distributed, and the links can still damage the stars that cannot be repaired.

No tools

In the absence of squeeze, you can install everything back without it. Pliers and any sturdy cylinder, for example, a small hexagon, will help. Gently clamping the cylinder, the pin can be riveted similarly to the work of the squeeze, it just requires much more attention and application of forces.

Models with a lock can be disengaged using a tight rope or cable. This allows for prompt repairs literally in the field, for example, when the chain suddenly breaks on a short hike.

Standard withdrawal process

All guides describe the same removal procedure. This will require, first of all, a small set of tools. without them it will be quite difficult.

How to remove a chain from a bicycle

Depending on the riding style, the question of removing the chain arises either almost immediately after the start of riding, for example, in a trial or downhill, or, after many kilometers of walks, when maintenance and replacement of the chain is required.

Important points

In addition to conventional devices, there are models with a lock. a special link, which is slightly different in shape from the others, and allows you to open the link using reverse tension without using a squeeze or other tools, the main thing is to put the lock link correctly. It is not recommended to open the links next to the lock, as this will reduce the reliability of the entire mechanism.

It is very important to remember how the chain is connected to the system, cassette and switches before starting the removal. without a little experience in installation and dismantling, it may be difficult to put it back on.

Process

Let’s take a step-by-step look at how to remove the chain from a bike:

  • We clean the links from dirt. it will interfere with each subsequent step.
  • Removing the rear wheel is optional, but it’s much easier to work without it.
  • Extrude the pin (the metal cylinder that closes each link) using a squeeze.
  • Disconnect one link.
  • Remove extreme links from switches.

The reverse sequence is the same. put the chain in place and assemble the structure back, riveting the pin with a squeeze, and rotating it in the opposite direction.

Now about how to put the chain that has flown off on a single-speed bicycle into place.

The idea is this: First, it is completely put on one of the stars (usually on the back, but you can also on the front) and thrown over the second sprocket (front or, respectively, back) to lie on the part of the teeth. Further, when scrolling the pedals in the direction of travel, the chain is captured by the remaining teeth of the sprocket and completely lies on the entire sprocket and is thus put on.

What to do if the chain fell off the bike

Imagine this situation. you are riding, drove quite far from your home and then a “bryms”, a bicycle chain flies off. The problem is not the worst, but if you have never put the chain back in place before, difficulties may arise. It is especially unpleasant that cyclists usually do not have any tools with them.

This article is planned as a quick emergency guide that can be used in the field. And also, below we post a video so that you can quickly solve this problem.

How to Tighten Bike Chain | Single speed and Internal Gear Bikes

First, be prepared to get your hands dirty with oil. As they write on modern memes: “You can’t just take and put the chain in place without getting your hands dirty”.

Secondly, problems will begin not just when the chain has fallen off the bike, but when the chain gets stuck between the system and the frame. This is the worst case. But let’s take everything in order.

First, let’s figure out why the bike chain flies at all.?

Roulette

It is often used as the most accessible tool when there is no caliper or caliber at hand. Using a tape measure, the total length of the first 24 links is measured (from the center of the first pin to the middle of the 25th axis), on the basis of which the conclusion is drawn:

  • Up to 304.8 mm. The chain is new.
  • 304.8-306.4 mm. You can ride.
  • 306.4-307.9. Change.
  • than 307.9. Replace chains and cassette.

Why Mountain Bike Chain Slips Under Load

There are, in fact, only two reasons. The rear derailleur is incorrectly adjusted or the chain and sprockets of the system and / or cassettes are worn out.

Elimination of breakage

Often, users are interested in what to do if the chain on the bike flies constantly. The repair algorithm depends on the type of bike. To eliminate the cause of scrolling the tract while loading the pedals of a conventional bicycle, you need to:

  • unscrew the rear wheel axle nuts;
  • pull it towards you;
  • ensuring the immobility of the wheel in relation to the center of the frame, tighten with nuts.

Performing the same work on a high-speed bike is more difficult. First, you need to measure the stretch of the chain. in the worn part, the size of the part does not match the pitch between the teeth of the stars. The result is a transmission failure. The level of production must be determined as follows:

  • using a tape measure, measure 24 segments of the tract on the stretched upper part (normal value is 30.5 cm);
  • determine the distance from 1 to 25 axis.

In this way, the degree of stretching is determined. Finding a malfunction affects the operation of the transmission. If the chain falls, the timely replacement of the part will avoid many problems in the future.

Results from 30 cm 64 mm to 30 cm 79 mm indicate that stretching has reached a critical state. In this case, install a new chain and sprockets.

To avoid problems, you should adhere to a certain algorithm. Instructions on how to put the chain if it flew off on a bicycle with several speeds:

  • place the link on a special squeeze so that the pin is in front of the axis;
  • slowly turn the handle until the pin is almost completely squeezed out;
  • install a new chain, starting to fix the switches with small stars;
  • put a chain on them, taking into account the location of the tension rollers;
  • aligning the links, clamp the chain, press in the axle.

After installing the chain, turn the pedals to check the operation of the element. It is advisable to do this with pressure. If all the steps are performed correctly, the chain on the bicycle will not fly off, sag.

To replace the cassette, you will need the following tools: an adjustable wrench and a wrench with a chain, a snap ring puller. Step-by-step instruction:

  • remove the wheel;
  • install the puller, making sure that the spitz is in the retaining ring;
  • make sure that the handle of the key with the chain from the cassette is located on the right side, and on the teeth of the star from below so that its links lie tightly;
  • put an adjustable wrench on the cassette remover, holding the whip to prevent the stars from turning; turn it counterclockwise;
  • unscrew the locking wheel;
  • dismantle washers, stars, laying them out in the same order to facilitate subsequent installation;
  • pins, grooves of bushings and stars are of equal dimensions, which facilitates correct installation;
  • put on stars and spacer rings in turn;
  • install the outer gear, screw on the retaining ring, check the correct assembly, tighten it up to the stop with a puller.

To prevent the chain from slipping off the rear large chainring of the bike, it is worth installing a damper. Rockrings, which they are equipped with, protect the elements from damage while overcoming obstacles.

Step-by-step instructions on how to install dampers:

  • prepare tools: hexagons, rubber clamps, keys for removing bonks, carriage pullers, grease, squeeze;
  • dismantle the stars with connecting rods so that the large one is located on the middle one;
  • screw on the rockring;
  • determine the correct position of the roller;
  • tighten the bolts;
  • drip in the area of the fastening bolts with threaded clamps;
  • install connecting rods;
  • put stars on the tract;
  • fix the rollers;
  • align the spacing between the inner pancake so that it coincides with the outer one; the chain should not touch the pancakes;
  • tighten the bolts all the way.

Installation must be carried out strictly following the instructions. Only then can the long-term operation of the transmission be guaranteed. Accelerators are mounted on some high-speed bikes.

The algorithm of actions when putting on the chain is approximately as follows.

  • Turn the bike upside down, placing it on the saddle and handlebars, or lift it up so that the rear wheel rotates freely.
  • If the bike has a bicycle chain guard, it is better to remove it. This will make it easier and more comfortable to reach the chainring. If you are too lazy to shoot, or you can already reach the asterisk. well, it’s up to you.
  • Place the chain completely over the rear sprocket. (If you have not removed the protection, then it may be more convenient to completely put it on the front sprocket).
  • Place the chain over the chainring in the direction of rotation and pedal forward in the direction of travel. When the pedals are rotated, it itself is thrown over the remaining teeth.

Here you need to understand that if the bike is upside down, then the chain is thrown onto the lower part of the sprocket (in relation to you) and, scrolling the sprocket itself by the pedal clockwise, we throw it on the front sprocket entirely. If you start to throw the chain over the top of the sprocket in relation to you, you will not be able to pedal. after all, in fact, you will have to press the brake.

If the bike is in the normal position (wheels down), then again throw the chain on top of the sprocket and pedal clockwise. as if you were driving forward.

How to increase the tightness of the bike chain

The case with high-speed bicycles is much more complicated. How to chain a bike at speeds?

The transmission unit for bicycles with speeds, of which the bicycle chain is an element, consists of cassettes with several sprockets. Therefore, the repair work to eliminate chain slippage and sagging on such bicycles has its own nuances. To understand the causes of the problem, you must:

  • If the chain constantly flies on a high-speed bike, it is worth checking if the sprockets are not damaged. If one of the stars in the cassette unit is deformed, the chain can be thrown over another star to continue moving. But in this case, you need to understand that you cannot switch the speed. This method is suitable in order to get to the house for better repairs. To eliminate the breakdown, the deformed star will have to be replaced, and if the assembly is not collapsible and the entire cassette is malfunctioning, then it must be replaced.
  • the chain flies on a high-speed bike; the reason is a failure of the speed setting. Check the quality of the setting. Very often, a failure in the speed setting will cause the chain to hit. The setting is made according to a special scheme.
  • After eliminating the root cause, the chain must be put back in place.

To properly attach the chain to a speed bike, you need to disconnect it with a squeeze. If you take a new chain, then you need to measure the required length, for which the chain is thrown over the large stars of the cassette blocks and connected, measuring the required distance. The excess piece of the chain is removed using a special squeeze tool. By turning the screw, the link axis is pushed out and the unnecessary chain section is removed. Then the chain is passed between the speed switches and connected using the same tool.

If the chain flies on a children’s bicycle, then, depending on the design, the same actions are performed as with an adult bicycle.

A malfunction of the transmission unit on a high-speed bike can threaten the health and life of its owner, the cyclist can fly out of the saddle by inertia, so you need to remember to carry out preventive maintenance work on the chain, check the condition of the speed switch and the integrity of the main parts. It is especially important to carry out a technical inspection of your vehicle before starting the movement, in the event that you make long cycling trips and crossings. Timely diagnostics of your bike is a guarantee of safety.

Rear wheel deformation

Perhaps the problem is the deformation of the rear wheel. One of the most unpleasant cyclist problems is the so-called “eight”. “Eight” is the deformation of the wheel, violation of its shape and the inability to perform functions. This problem is eliminated by tightening and loosening the spokes with a special spoke wrench. To do this, the wheel is removed, the affected area is determined and the central spoke of the “figure of eight” is highlighted. Then the needles are pulled through one.

Speed bike problem

For a regular bike, this problem is easy to solve, but what if the chain jumps off on a high-speed bike? Among the most common causes of this problem are the following:

  • deformation of one of the stars. Gear shifting on multi-speed bicycles is carried out using cassettes consisting of several stars. These designs are collapsible and non-collapsible. Replacement of a damaged sprocket is possible only in collapsible structures, if the structure is non-collapsible, its complete replacement is required.
  • Mistakes in the setting of the derailleur can cause the chain to fly off the bike when shifting gears. Gear shifting should be fine-tuned. If the bike owner himself cannot do this, you need to contact a specialist, or carefully study the instructions for setting the bike speed switch. The safety of the cyclist depends on the quality of this function.
  • Stretching the bike chain. This process is associated with long-term use of the chain, the application of high dynamic loads to it, irregular cleaning, due to which the residues of lubricants, mixed with dirt and dust, accumulate on the chain links. In this case, the chain must be shortened or replaced. To shorten the chain, you need to remove several links from it. This is done using a special squeeze tool. This simple tool is a must-have for every cycling enthusiast. With its help, the axle of the link (pin) in the lockless type bicycle chain is pushed out. If there is noticeable stretch on the bike chain, and the service life is long, it will be more advisable to replace it completely. To maintain the chain in good condition, it must be periodically rinsed in kerosene and cleaned.
  • Curvature of individual chain links as a result of which the chain flies off the bike.

There are several reasons:

Most often we deal with a combination of factors at once.

The most unpleasant situation when the chain falls into the space between the frame and the star occurs if at one of the moments the chain is “in an advantageous” position for this. All factors described may play a role.

The principle of a light bulb in the mouth works here. it falls in one direction, but does not get back. But, unlike a light bulb, the situation can be corrected without the help of a traumatologist.

Depending on the type of bike you are using, there are two different options depending on the type of transmission.

What to do if the chain fell off the bike

Imagine this situation. you are riding, drove quite far from your home and then a “bryms”, a bicycle chain flies off. Secondly, problems will begin not just when the chain has fallen off the bike, but when the chain gets stuck between the system and the frame. This is the worst case. But let’s take everything in order.

First, let’s figure out why the bike chain flies at all.?

Deformation of one or more teeth in the chainring or chainring

Why can the teeth warp? The first obvious reason is due to impact, the second is due to severe wear. In any case, if the chain falls off solely due to problems with the cassette teeth, then it must be replaced with another one.

Curvature of one or more links

Such a problem can be encountered quite rarely, but it can still bother you at any time. If you notice that the links are curved, you have two options. The first is to completely replace the chain. The second is to get rid of the bent links using a special squeeze. Do not use this method on bicycles without variable transmission. On models with gear derailleurs, it is recommended to use this method as a temporary solution.

Deformation of the teeth

The teeth can deform over long periods of time, resulting in severe wear or severe impact. If the chain on the bike constantly flies on this pretext, it is worth replacing it with a new one.

Important! If the chain is stretched after a sufficiently long period of operation, it is not possible to return its previous state, so you will have to put on a new one.

Insufficient tension

If you have a bicycle without gears, first unscrew the nuts on the rear wheel, there are two of them, pull the wheel towards you. Then put the nuts back in such a way as to prevent the wheel from shifting towards the center. That’s all there is to it. It will be more difficult to fix this problem with a unit with speeds. There is a spring in the gear derailleur of a high-speed bike, which independently tightens the chain, over time it stretches, in which case you need to change the derailleur.

I used to have such a misfortune from time to time, on my bicycle (a regular one-speed a la Ukraine) the chain suddenly began to fall off. In the course of the experiment, it turned out that there can be many reasons. I wanted to be smart and generalize)).

The most elementary. The chain is not tight enough. The deflection of the chain should not be more than a centimeter (half a centimeter up and down). It is also impossible to pull too much, especially on old sprockets / carriages, where its tension may depend on the position of the pedals. After adjustment, it is imperative to slowly turn the pedals several times and make sure that the chain in any of their positions is not too tight and does not interfere with the free running of the stars.

It even happens that yesterday it was pulled well, but today it sagged. This can happen if the rear wheel was not spun well enough, or (I have had this) the hub is not assembled correctly, for example, after lubrication. During the ride, some mechanism that did not fall into place jumps off and gets there, and the length of the bushing decreases and the wheel is released.

READ  How to apply the brakes on a speed bike

I will move away from the topic. A dismount can also happen at the footboard if it is not installed carefully (it has happened). It also then falls into place in the same way and it turns out that the wheel is not spun. But here the chain is unlikely to sag, since the footboard is on the other side. But the wheel can shift and start rubbing.

A very easy reason. The carriage collapsed. If the bearings in it consist of a piece of tin with balls, then this will happen all the time. A good sleeve, in the form of a one-piece cassette, costs 10-15% more, but it will pay off. However, before buying, it is better to make sure that it fits the frame. After the bearings have crumbled, the chainring may wander and the chain links do not always hit the teeth.

How to Replace a Chain on a Single Speed Bike. Sizing, Installation & Tensioning

This reason is a logical continuation of the previous one. If you drive for a long time with a faulty carriage, then replacing its bearings creates the visual impression that everything is fine. But the axle may already be licked a little. Sometimes, to see this, you need to strain a little. Riding with such a bottom bracket will cause the chain to fall off, even if the bearings are intact. It can be diagnosed “by eye” as follows. Turn the bike over, pedal and look at the chainring. She looks completely flat, but she walks crookedly. At the same time, the axis of the carriage also goes crooked.

Curve star. Perhaps it was removed with a hammer. If its course is curved, and the course of the carriage axis is even, then the point is in it.

One of the stars (most likely the front one) was eaten very badly. Most likely they drove on a stretched or unlubricated chain. Visually, its teeth will look like billowing waves in a child’s picture)). I can’t describe it more precisely. In short, they will be licked from the load side of the chain.

Stretched chain. it does not hit the teeth of the stars, since their pitch is less than the pitch of its links. We measure. In the new chain, 24 links (12 full pairs of links) are 304.8 mm, this is the distance, for example, from the center of the first pin (link axis) of the first link to the center of the first pin of the 25th link. But when measuring, it should be as tight as possible. If the distance is more than 306 mm, then it is time to change the chain urgently, otherwise, even if it does not fall off, it already begins to lick the teeth of the stars.

The chain came off on a speed bike

Bicycles with gear derailleurs have several other reasons why the chain falls off. For example, if the sprocket on the front sprocket system is bent or the speeds are not set. When the star is bent, it is worth switching to a different speed, where this problem is absent, and continue driving. This will help if you are not using all speeds, otherwise the star will have to be replaced.

If the stars are okay, check the speed setting. Perhaps the reason for the chain jumping off is in them. There are bolts on the gear derailleurs that need to be adjusted according to a special scheme.

It is far from always necessary to immediately change a loose chain with a new one, perhaps it should be repaired, or maybe the problem is in the speed switch on the bicycle. It is definitely worth servicing your bike.

If the chain flies on a child’s bike, the causes of the problem, tips for its elimination are similar to those given above for an adult bicycle.

Important! If you notice any malfunction in the bike, including the chain slipping off, you should immediately understand the cause and eliminate it, as it may be unsafe.

Weak tension

If your chain goes off on a bike without gears, all that is needed is to unscrew the two nuts on the rear wheel axle and then pull it towards you. Tighten the nuts, but make sure that the wheel does not move closer to the center of the frame. By following these steps, you will see that the chain will not sag. Accordingly, the likelihood that it flies again is completely excluded. But in the case of the occurrence of this problem on a high-speed bike, you will have to sweat. A special spring is installed in the gear selector, which automatically pulls the chain. With prolonged use, it loses its elasticity, which leads to similar problems. Since the transmission is not separable, you will have to change the switch to a new one.

Switch configured incorrectly

This reason only applies to cycling vehicles with a gearshift switch. You need to make the adjustment of the rear derailleur as precise as possible.

On models with gear derailleurs, it is recommended to use this method as a temporary solution.

The reasons

There are a number of reasons why the chain fails. They are listed below:

  • weak tension (applies to both bicycles without gears and with variable transmission);
  • curvature of one or more links;
  • deformation of one or more teeth in the chainring or chainring;
  • the chain is stretched as a result of prolonged use;
  • incorrectly configured front or rear derailleur.

Now let’s take a closer look at each problem. Here we will also offer solutions to emerging difficulties.

The chain is stretched due to prolonged use

This happens in the process of wear and tear. The switch spring cannot tension it normally, it constantly sags. In this case, there is only one way out. to replace the circuit with a new one. In practice, it is rare to find bicycles in which the chain is stretched and bounced when shifting gears. It is virtually impossible to restore its elasticity.

What to do if the bike chain falls off?

During the operation of the bicycle, the owner has to deal with a situation where the chain comes off during the ride. This situation is dangerous when driving at high speed, as well as in the process of screwing down a hill. Even if you use slip-on pedals with shoes to keep your foot from flying off the pedal, when the chain falls off, the cyclist can sprint over the handlebars or fall on his side. In this article, we will look at the main reasons why the bicycle chain flies, and also give practical advice on how to fix this breakdown.
