How to properly lubricate a bicycle chain
Today, when I lubricated the chain on my bicycle, I thought that I must be doing something wrong. And that lubricating a bicycle chain with sewing machine oil is not very correct 🙂
I decided to google and look for material After all, everything that is stolen is stolen before us! 🙂 So, a good article about bicycle chain maintenance, let’s use it 🙂

The procedure for using the washing machine should be read in the manual for it.
If there is no such machine, then you can remove the chain from the bike and rinse it in a bath with solvent or detergent, cleaning hard-to-reach places with a brush (you can use an old toothbrush). If the circuit is split, then this is probably the best way. For a one-piece chain, each link opening operation reduces the service life, so this method should be left only for deep cleaning, and after rolling through the mud it is better to still use the machine.
The chain must be lubricated. Again, those who ride on wet / muddy or dusty / sandy terrain need to lubricate the chain more often than fans of the park’s asphalt paths.
What needs to be lubricated in the chain? The lubricant should be under the chain rollers. There is no need to lubricate the outside of the chain. the lubricant will only pick up a lot of dirt and dust, which will penetrate into the chain, under the rollers. Therefore, after lubrication, the chain must remain dry on the outside.
What is a good lubricant? Good lubricant should easily penetrate hard-to-reach areas such as between rollers and link pins. (So it must be liquid). On the other hand, it should not flow out of there. (So it should be thick.) In addition, a good lubricant should not be washed out with water, should not enter into chemical reactions with the metal from which the stars are made, and a lot of things should be done. That is, good chain lubrication is always a compromise.
Aerosol lubricants. Supplied in aerosol cans. On bezrybe, you can use domestic UNISMA oil or imported WD40.
Pros. the aerosol can penetrate into the most inaccessible places of the lubricated unit.
Cons. it often turns out that aerosol lubricant does not go where it is needed, but quite the opposite, where it is not needed at all (on rims, tires, etc.)
Liquid lubricants. Supplied in oil bottles. In principle, automotive gear oil can be used.
Pros. spot application. Using a medical syringe, oil can be dripped precisely into the gaps between the rollers and the link side plates.
Cons. not all, but many such lubricants thicken in the cold and cannot get into the right place in the chain.
Two-component greases. Supplied in oil bottles. This is an attempt to kill two birds with one stone and make the lubricant thick and liquid at the same time. Such oil is a thick grease, diluted in a solvent, so that it is a liquid (consistency. like water). When lubricated, this fluid easily flows under the chain rollers. Then the solvent evaporates and a thick grease remains inside.
Pros. as with any liquid lubricant, spot application is possible.
Cons. it takes time for the solvent to dry, that is, after lubrication, you can ride only after a few hours.
An example of a two-component lubricant is White Ligthning. As it is written in the annotation, if you lubricate a clean chain with this oil, then it is not necessary to wash it before each lubrication. White Ligthning, after drying, does not let dirt inside. But you need to lubricate it often (every 50-100 km)
Thick lubricants. Supplied in cans or tubes. An example of such a lubricant is LITOL-24. In principle, they can also be used for chains, but such oils have a huge disadvantage. it is very difficult to deliver the oil to the right place in the chain. You can, of course, boil the chain in hot oil, but then you will have to first remove the chain from the bike for each lubricant, and then, before installing, clean it from the outside It turns out that thick oils are poorly suited for the chain.
When to lubricate the chain? How do you know when it’s time? It’s time when the chain starts to creak slightly when pedaling, or every 100-150 km. Whichever comes first.
How to lubricate the chain? Only a clean chain can be lubricated. For good, it must be washed to such a state when the solvent remains transparent, and when the chain is bent in the transverse direction, no sand crunch will be heard. It will not hurt to wash both the system sprockets and cassettes. (otherwise the dirt from them will fall into a clean chain)
Then the chain must be dried, or at worst, wiped with a clean cloth, because the solvent will destroy fresh oil.
Then you can start with lubrication. If we use liquid or two-component lubricant, then, without removing the chain from the bike, we drip from an oiler or from a medical syringe into the gaps between the rollers and the side plates of the links. This must be done for each link in the chain (pedaling backwards)
Remember from which link you started the lubrication, so as not to go to the second circle, or count the already lubricated links. If oil gets on the rim, brake disc, tire, then remove it with a cloth.
After all the links are lubricated, rotate the pedals in the opposite direction for a few minutes, then dry the chain and cassette sprockets with a cloth.
And the right video, about the correct lubrication of the bicycle chain:
Bicycle chain maintenance
A bicycle chain is a rather complex mechanism containing a large number of parts. The condition of the chain affects the ease and quietness of the bike ride.
Bicycle chain lubrication and maintenance
Chain maintenance is one of the darkest issues in bicycle mechanics. How and when to lubricate it, when and how to change it. everyone has their own opinion, and everyone does it in their own way. All authorities agree on only one thing. an unkempt, dirty chain greatly affects the ease of movement, and accelerates the wear of the cassette and system sprockets. And since the chain of an imported bicycle is quite expensive, it makes sense to take care of it sometimes.
The bike chain should be as clean as possible. It is much easier for those who ride only on asphalt in good weather to keep the chain clean than for those who like long-distance cycling, who may encounter muddy sections of roads, fords, and complete off-road. It happens, of course, that the chain itself is not visible under the layer of dirt, and there is no time to wash it. you have to go forward On good, the chain must be washed after each ride on dirty or dusty terrain. Sand and clay, getting into the links of the chain, sharply accelerate its wear. If you leave the chain dirty for a few days, rust will appear on its links.
How to wash a bicycle chain?
Sometimes you can hear recommendations to wash the chain with soapy water or non-abrasive household detergents (such as Fairy). In my opinion, this is not the best option. although valid. In any case, soap can be used in the living room as well. But after such a wash, the chain must be quickly dried so that it does not have time to rust.
The quickest way to clean the chain is to simply wipe the outside of it with a dry cloth. The cleaning quality will be low, but if the chain is not very dirty, then it’s okay.

How and what you can and should lubricate a bicycle chain
How to lubricate a bicycle chain so that the lubricant retains its properties for a long time and provides reliable protection for the part?
The quality of the lubricant directly affects not only the operation of the entire transmission system, but also its service life. To select a lubricant, it is important to understand exactly how this material differs from the substances used to process other parts.
In motion, the chain constantly rubs the rollers against the stars. Such friction does not lead to significant changes, but internal friction can cause more damage to the mechanism. The chain includes many links, each of which contains 4 elements. plates (2 pcs.), Pin, roller.
To determine the place that most requires processing, you need to understand which of the elements is subject to the most wear.
There is no friction between the pins and the outer plates. these elements are very tightly planted. The greatest friction occurs between the pins and the inner plates. The plates create grooves in the pin, which leads to its rapid wear. As a result, the rollers do not join the teeth of the stars, which leads to their wear. The rear derailleur rollers, which are most often made of plastic, are equally affected. This leads to a decrease in the coherence of gear shifting, the appearance of clicks, noise, chain slippage. What kind of oil is allowed to lubricate the bicycle chain in order to avoid unpleasant consequences?
For effective action, the lubricant must enter the interior of the system and remain there. At the same time, the substance must have several more important properties:
- do not fly out in splashes when driving;
- do not wash off with water;
- do not dry out.
If you treat the outer part of the chain instead of the inner one, the effect will be exactly the opposite. the thick fluid will collect all the dust and dirt from the roads, further polluting the transmission. So, the rule for every cyclist is that the chain should be dry and clean on the outside and well processed on the inside.

Why clean and lubricate your bike chain
The longevity and health of your bike is largely up to you. Even the most advanced transport cannot take care of itself and the owner’s task is to provide timely care for the most important parts of the iron horse. Do I need to clean the transmission? It is enough to look at the state of the chain, cassette, led system, the owner of which considers this process superfluous. Black spots, drips, a thick layer of an incomprehensible mass, which contains dust, dirt, sand, oil, plant elements and much more that cannot be recognized. in this favorable environment, “steel gnaws” multiply very quickly. bacteria that stimulate the appearance of corrosion and corrode the metal. When asked whether it is necessary to lubricate the bicycle chain, the answer is unequivocal. it is necessary, moreover, first it should be cleaned.
Chain care: features
The bike drivetrain should shine. There should be no dirt or excess grease on it. Any moisture will cause the rapid appearance of new contaminants. It is advisable to clean the transmission every 100 km in good weather. How often do I lubricate my bike chain? You do not need to do this every time you clean. Use a lubricant when the characteristic dry rustle appears.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain
Apply light lubricant to each roller of the chain, then wipe dry the outside of the substance. In motion, part of the lubricant gets out in any case. In this case, use a stiff brush to clean the chains, sprockets and rollers. Choose an accessory with medium bristles. Special brushes are available for easy penetration of bristles into hard-to-reach areas.
How to clean a bicycle chain if it is in a running state, one brush may not be enough. Use a special transmission cleaner (grease solvent). Its formula is specially designed to quickly remove caked grease mixed with dirt.
Sometimes cleaning the chain is not enough to remove all the dirt, especially if the links are clogged with a mixture of grease, dirt, sand. In such situations, you need to know how to wash your bike chain. Use a chain cleaner with several brushes. such a device will greatly simplify the maintenance of the transmission.
How to lubricate a bike chain if it’s new
When assembling the chain at the factory, the manufacturer uses a very thick paste, the consumption of which is enough for 300-400 km of rides, after which the owner will have to cope with the task on his own. It is difficult to apply the same thick grease, so more liquid alternatives and sprays are used in everyday life.
After buying a bike, wipe off any traces of grease that have appeared on the outside before the first ride. Use a soft cloth. There is no need to remove grease inside the chain! A simple procedure does not take much time, but will avoid serious contamination and damage to the chain.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain
The main mistake of cyclists is the use of WD-40 grease and analogues. This aerosol is not a lubricant and has a completely different principle of operation. It is used to dissolve old grease (unblocking too contaminated and acidified compounds). Use a chain cleaner, not a lubricant. The amount of oil in its composition is not enough to perform the necessary functions.
Engine oil will not be useful for the chain and the bike as a whole. This substance is designed for use in a closed atmosphere at elevated temperatures, which cannot be applied to a bicycle drivetrain.
There is no need to look for an alternative. the consumption of special bicycle chain oil is minimal. A small jar will last for many years. Why replace it with unsuitable alternatives?
Can I lubricate my bike chain with grease? No, just like lithol, sunflower oil and aromatic oils. Buy a product designed to work with bicycle parts.
How to remove a chain from a bike without tools.
The “chain lock” is very easy to use. you just need to learn how to connect and disconnect it correctly.
Chain preparation before lubrication.
Turn on the paraffin heater. While the paraffin is heating, thread the wire through the chain links so that it can be easily dipped in the paraffin. I took a short piece of wire and passed it through the outermost link and the link in the middle of the chain. I also strung the two halves of the chain lock on the wire and put them together.
As soon as the paraffin becomes completely liquid, you can begin to immerse the chain in it.

Immersing the chain in paraffin.
Lubricating the chain in hot paraffin is a snap. Be careful as the paraffin wax and heater are hot enough to burn yourself. Dip the chain into a container of paraffin so that it is completely immersed in it. Hook the wire over the edge of the paraffin wax container so that you can easily grab it when you take out the chain (see photo above).
Leave the chain in paraffin for 4.6 minutes. There should be no bubbles on the surface of the wax. Stretch the chain so that the paraffin penetrates better and it lubricates well.
How to properly lubricate a bicycle chain
We will lubricate the chain by immersing it in hot paraffin. The main advantages of this chain lubrication system are its simplicity and speed. The chain is automatically cleared of dirt, and at the same time the risk of staining your clothes is minimized. It is for these reasons that I long ago abandoned the time-consuming process of lubricating the chain with oil. I try to regularly lubricate the chain with paraffin every three weeks or every 500 km.
We take out the paraffin chain and cool it.
Remove the paraffin wax chain and place it on a paper napkin lined tray. The heated paraffin has a magical effect on the chain. now it is very clean and just shines.
Leave it to cool for a few minutes.
What is needed to lubricate the chain.
Probably the most difficult part of chain lubrication is collecting all the necessary tools and materials, but this also applies to any other bike repair. So, to lubricate the chain on a bicycle, we need:
An interesting application in modern times is becoming a two-component bicycle lubricant. It is based on two components. a liquid-based solvent and a thick lubricant mass. The most effective influence is carried out on parts that rub tightly. The exposure technology provides for the lubrication of the chain, followed by the evaporation of the solvent and the presence of thick grease in the right places. The disadvantage is associated with time. After the procedure, the bike cannot be used for about an hour. During this time, the solvent will disappear.
These lubricants are the most popular among cyclists. Depending on the basis, they have different characteristics and seasonality of use. They have one common property. durability during operation. Usually, a field of heavy rain quickly dissolves, but at the same time they perform their functions very efficiently. In more detail, their classification and characteristics are reflected in the paragraph on lubricants.
Any such lubricant is sold in a special bottle that is equipped with a nozzle for pinpoint action when lubricating bicycle chains. If you do not have individual preferences, feel free to make those choice in favor of liquid. Even a hard-to-reach place where you can’t stick a spout can be lubricated with a regular syringe. After the lubrication procedure, the excess must be removed. The only drawback is the ability to use at subzero temperatures (begins to thicken).
Bicycle Chain Lubrication Signs
There are several basic signs that an experienced cyclist can use to determine if a bike chain lubricant should be applied. The most common symptom will be stiffness during motor movements. An indirect sign may be the cyclist’s fatigue. The appearance of rust on the chain elements also indicates untimely cleaning and insufficient lubrication. Well, pay attention to the extraneous sounds when driving. A rustling and crunching sound should make you take up the service immediately.
Such features lead to premature wear of the sprockets, failure of the tensioner and destruction of the product links. In order not to get such a result, it is imperative to clean and lubricate the bicycle chain when exposed to unsightly weather conditions, after a long journey on an unpaved surface and, of course, after “hibernation”.
Bicycle Chain Lubrication Instructions
Every novice lover of cycling fun is worried about the problem: how to properly lubricate a bicycle chain. This procedure consists of two key stages.
- Cleaning the chain from clumps of remaining material. It is a mixture of previously applied grease and adhered dirt.
- The second step is directly applying the lubricant.
Let’s look at two cleaning methods. fast and global.
Fast cleaning is characterized by the absence of actions associated with dismantling the chain. The main condition is that such cleaning must be carried out on the street.
- We begin to wipe the chain with a dry cloth, accompanying the action with a rotational movement of the pedals. We work to get rid of all the dirt.
- Wipe off all the stars.
- We clean each link of the bicycle chain with a small rag.
- Having previously diluted the detergent in lukewarm water, use an unnecessary toothbrush to thoroughly clean the bicycle chain.
- After rinsing, wash with plain water.
- Wipe dry and leave to dry.
- It is advisable to repeat this process with asterisks.
Global cleaning involves dismantling the entire chain and placing it in a special cleaning agent. Using a rag and a brush, we rip out the product to perfect condition.
- The assembled chain must be in place.
- We start lubrication from the first link, marking it with some sign.
- Each roller must be greased meticulously.
- Avoid getting lubricant on the tire, rim or brake.
- After the end of the process, we rotate the pedals for two minutes to evenly apply the bike lubricant.
- Remove excess with a rag.
An aerosol type lubricant represents the liquid consistency of oil in a container. The lubrication process is carried out through a suitable tube. Suitable for hard-to-reach places. The second plus will be its low weight, which makes it possible to take it with you on the road. Low efficiency due to the spray area, which also touches other parts.
Bicycle chain care
One has only to forget about maintenance of the chain, and the bike will cease to function normally. An abrasive mixture is formed between the links, which includes dust particles, sand and remnants of old grease. Over time, this mixture actively and aggressively affects the metal of the chain and the bicycle sprocket. As a result, the mating parts are deformed, the chain stretches and eventually becomes unusable.
Correct and timely lubrication helps to overcome these problems, but only when applied to a clean and properly prepared surface. Before lubricating the chain, it is recommended to remove the chain from the bike and place it in a container of solvent for a while. For this purpose, ordinary kerosene or a special liquid capable of dissolving old grease is suitable.
Chain maintenance should be regular. It is largely determined by how often you cycle. In general, the chain should be cleaned and lubricated on a monthly basis, and at least once a week when driving on bad roads for a long time.
Under no circumstances should fresh lubricant be applied to a dirty chain, as this will only increase the abrasive effect of old deposits. Every chain lubrication must be thoroughly cleaned of any contamination.
Bicycle chain lubrication
The recommended lubrication frequency for the chain is largely determined by the type of substances used for this purpose. Among cyclists, the boiling of links in graphite lubricant has become widespread. To do this, the removed chain is placed in a metal container with graphite grease and kept on fire for 10-15 minutes. This treatment allows you to apply lubricant even to the most difficult to reach places. This procedure is usually repeated every 350-400 km of riding, and when operating the bike in the rain, this can be done even more often.
Cycling enthusiasts today can afford to choose a chain lubricant from a wide range of similar products, focusing on their financial capabilities and operating conditions of the equipment. Bicycle lubricants are very convenient, which are sold in the form of bottles with a narrow “nose”, although if you wish, you can completely use a medical syringe. Grease should be buried in those places where the links directly connect, preventing the compound from getting on the outside of the chain.
Remove excess substance with a clean cloth. Such a lubricant, with moderate use of the bicycle, performs its function for several weeks.
Multipurpose aerosol lubricants are considered to be especially convenient to use. They can be used in any weather conditions. Using aerosol lubricant is very simple: just point the spray device at the link connections and spray them lightly. It is recommended to use such a lubricant more often than usual, focusing on the degree of contamination of the chain.
How to lubricate a bicycle fork?
Suspension forks on bicycles from different manufacturers are completely different from each other. However, the approximate list of actions for all surebets is almost the same. with the exception of some peculiarities. Here’s this fork cleaning plan:
- It is necessary to clean the fork of any debris, then remove the wheel.
- Unscrew the bolts from the rods. the rods into which the forks are inserted. Then you need to remove the regulator.
- Then you should remove the brake system, and then pull the pants out of the bike.
- The next step: wipe the rods from grease and remove the stopper rings from the oil seals.
- Then you need to wipe the pants with a fork from the inside.
- Grease is applied to the oil seals, and a little oil is poured into each leg. Use, best of all, oils with m grease.
- Then everything is assembled in the same way as it was sorted out.
- The inside of the fork is lubricated with an aerosol. All is ready.
How to lubricate your bike?
There are a huge number of names of various lubricants and oils. They are all great for bike care:
- Specialty liquid oils. This category is suitable for all types of chains, suspension systems and brakes. They completely cover all areas to be treated and ensure long-lasting uninterrupted operation of bicycle parts.
- Aerosols with two components. They are great for a variety of derailleurs, thread and cable lubrication. Aerosols are designed in such a way that when spraying the oil they contain, even the most inaccessible places are covered, which is an undoubted advantage in processing bicycle parts. In addition, some of them contain kerosene. It is also a great helper in separating damaged parts. These include: “LM40” and “LM47”.
- Lubricating greases. They are used to lubricate and seal all types of joints.
- Lubricants with m calcium. This type belongs to the group of greases. They are also designed to lubricate all kinds of joints and assemblies. These include: “Solidol”, “Uniol” and so on. The advantage of using this type of lubricant is that calcium is able to stay on the surface of parts for quite a long time and, at the same time, provide them with excellent performance.
- Lithium greases. Another type of grease. These include: “Litol-24”, “Fiol” and so on.
All these oils and greases can quickly and thoroughly lubricate all parts of the bike. In addition, they keep the entire undercarriage of the bike in perfect order for a long time.
The principle of the machine for cleaning the chain (chain)
How the chain cleaner works.
The main and, probably, the key advantage of the chain cleaner is the ability to take care of the chain without removing it from the bicycle. To get started, it is enough to put the chain inside the machine, pre-filled with flushing liquid to the middle of the rollers (about 50 ml).
IMPORTANT! Usually a simple detergent like Fairy, thinner, white spirit or kerosene is used for this.
Then you should smoothly rotate the pedals, while carefully holding both the machine and the bike itself. In order not to spill used liquid on the floor or drip grease, protect the floor covering with rags or newspapers: if weather conditions allow, then it is advisable to perform the procedure outdoors. this will relieve both stains and the sharp smell of cleaning liquids. After the chain is cleaned of dirt, it is easy to lubricate it: for this, it is enough to replace the flushing fluid in the machine with lubricant.
The principle of operation of the machine is extremely simple, it is available to every bicycle owner, regardless of age and knowledge. Therefore, the presence of such a device can be considered justified, especially in the absence of experience in self-care and repair of bikes.
Bicycle chain maintenance
Since the chain is the most important part of the entire bike, it requires the most detailed and thorough care.
And finally it happened! The bike has been bought and even run in. And then a new problem arises: the pedals and all parts of the bike begin to creak, and the chain is slightly rusty. What should be done? the answer is simple: use a lubricant.
What needs to be lubricated in the bike?
In order for the bike to serve its owner as long as possible, it is necessary to periodically lubricate all its parts. The most important and first in turn is the chassis. that is, all the parts that ensure the movement of the bicycle, combined into one system. These include:
- Chain. This detail is one of the most important because it ensures the movement of the bicycle. That is why the entire technical condition of this transport depends on the quality and quantity of lubricant applied to it. The first signal that the chain is out of order is its tinkling. You should also take into account such a moment as the wear of this part. It needs to be changed as often as possible. about every 1,500 kilometers of cycling.
- Brake axles. The entire braking system is responsible for driving safety and stopping the bike in time.
- Roller wheels for chain tensioning. They help keep the chain tight and resist loosening.
- Speed shifter. It consists of two parts: front and rear. The first is responsible for shifting gears, and the second is for gradually building up speed. In order for these actions to occur flawlessly, constant lubrication and proper care of these parts are required.
- Shift and brake cables. Since neither the brake nor the derailleur can transmit commands through the air, each bicycle has special cables that carry two functions: combining the braking parts and the switch with each other and transmitting signals that induce action. To lubricate them, you need to drop a little oil near the inlet and outlet of each cable and press a little on the pedals and switches.
- Carriage assembly. The carriage is a small bushing that contains bearings and special cups. This device is responsible for the pedals. The bearings help them to twist easily, and the cups keep the pedals from rolling and falling out. Thus, by lubricating the carriage, you ensure your own driving safety.
- Wheel bearings. They help the wheels move and keep the wheel from wobbling while driving. They also need constant lubrication.
- Damping system. She is responsible for the softness of the ride. In addition, in the presence of various obstacles, shock absorbers soften the impact of the wheels and resist the breakdown of the bike. The owner is required to lubricate the special front fork and rear shock absorber.
Thus, if the owner lubricates everything in advance, then he will not observe any problems with the bike for a long time.
Hybrid bike chain lubricant
- Manufactured using a unique hybrid technology based on the principle of synergy between different materials.
- Has a high penetrating power, due to which the grease gets on the inner surfaces of the hinges.
- After evaporation of the solvents, the high-viscosity oil reliably holds the grease in the friction zone.
- Solid lubricants form a thin layer that prevents dust from entering the chain.
- Convenient aerosol can with a straw nozzle allows you to evenly apply the material over the entire surface.
It is necessary to select the correct lubricants. This is the kind of lubricant recommended by experts:
These are the most popular and effective lubricants to help keep your bike chain running smoothly.
Bicycle bearing grease
Bearings require a lubricant that will keep them running smoothly for a long time. This includes a lithium-based grease. It can last for a whole year without requiring replacement or addition.
Before applying it, the bearings must be rinsed with kerosene and allowed to dry. And only after that, the grease is applied to the separator, which holds the bearings together, or directly into the cup, where, then, the balls are pressed.
Review of popular paraffinic cycle lubricants
The most common paraffin-based lubricants include:
- Krytech Paraffin from Finish Line
- Universal Chain Lube by Smoove;
- Chain Lube Long Lasting by Squirt
- Low-Temp Chain Lube by Squirt.
Finish Line Krytech Paraffin is designed for use in dry weather conditions. After drying, it forms a strong film with high antifriction characteristics and excellent dustproof properties. Ideal for dry, dusty trails.
Squirt Chain Lube Long Lasting is another versatile all-weather compound. It lasts a long time, repels water and dirt, so the bike chain stays dry and clean.
Squirt Low-Temp Chain Lube is a paraffin wax bike lubricant designed for use in low temperatures. It contains modifying additives that prevent the wax from hardening in the cold.
Lubricating the bike chain with paraffin
Chain lubrication is one of the key steps in maintaining your bike. During the ride, the chain experiences intense friction, so it needs regular cleaning and lubrication.
Important! If you ignore the procedures for cleaning and lubricating the bicycle chain, then very soon mechanical stress, moisture, dust and dirt will cause abrasion and corrosion of the main components of the mechanism.
It is very important to choose the right lubricant for the bike chain, the efficiency, reliability and durability of the transmission mechanism of the bike depends on it. There are several types of lubrication products, one of them is paraffin wax bike chain lubricant.
It is not worth saving on lubrication, a new bicycle chain or transmission repairs will cost more. Choose special bike chain lubricants, they are relatively inexpensive and economical to use. At the same time, they take into account all the features of the functioning of the open transmission of bicycle bikes.
Thoroughly wash the bike chain, cassette, chainrings and rear derailleur rollers before applying paraffin wax. If this is your first time using such a product, then it is better to install a new chain.
Drip each pin in a circle, then pedal to change speeds. After drying, the chain will be completely dry, its accidental touch will not stain clothes.
Benefits of paraffinic lubricating products
Lubricants with paraffin (wax) form after application a strong film that repels dust and dirt. The wax glides well, preventing dirt from getting inside the transmission elements. When using wax, the bike chain needs to be cleaned and lubricated much less often, and the drive itself looks clean and dry.
often than not, cyclists choose between paraffin and Teflon lubricants. Let’s compare these funds according to two main criteria.
|Characteristics||Paraffin lubricant||Teflon lubricant|
|Application features||Lays down on metal in a thick layer, rarely needs updating.||Needs to be refreshed after being exposed to rain.|
Important! Paraffin-lubricated bike chain for crisp, confident and quiet transmission.
How and how to clean a bicycle chain
It is best to use a special cleaning machine to clean the bicycle chain, since in this case we will not need to remove the chain from the bicycle, which will extend its life (if the chain is without a lock). We will talk about a special machine for cleaning bicycle chains in a separate article.
So, if we do not have a car, then it will be necessary to remove the chain. After the chain is removed, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse it in a specially prepared bath with detergent. You can use a brush or an old toothbrush to remove dirt and old grease from hard-to-reach areas. Many cyclists use a plastic bottle to wash their chains. We push the chain into a bottle of detergent, close and shake it until the chain is washed.
What is the best chain lubricant
- Aerosol lubricants. poorly suited for lubricating the chain, since they must be used very carefully, avoiding contact with other parts of the bike, which ultimately complicates the whole process.
- Grease. This makes chain lubrication even more difficult than aerosol greases. This is understandable, because it is necessary to lubricate the chain inside the rollers, and thick grease will not allow this, so this lubrication option should be swept away first.
- Liquid lubricants. most often sold in tubes, sometimes even immediately in oil cans. This lubricant is best suited for the chain as it can get into the most difficult to reach areas of the chain rollers.
- Two-component greases. Consists of grease and solvent. Why is this necessary? The answer is simple. for high-quality chain lubrication, it is necessary to lubricate the roller inside so that the lubricant stays there for a long time. It is the two-component lubricant that allows the grease to be delivered to the inside of the roller. Such a grease is a diluted thick grease to a liquid state in solvents, which allows it to penetrate deeply into the roller, then the solvent itself dries up, and the grease inside the roller thickens and remains there for a long time.
How often should the chain be lubricated and cleaned
This is a very popular question, especially among beginner cyclists, to which there is no definite answer, since it all depends on the riding style. But it is important to keep in mind that ideally the chain should always be clean and lubricated. Therefore, if dirt appears on your chain or you notice extraneous noise in the chain, then it is necessary to carry out its maintenance. lubrication and cleaning. It is worth noting that it is impossible to ideally service the chain, but it is worth carrying out this procedure as efficiently as possible.
Cleaning and lubricating the bike chain
Cleaning and relubricating your bike chain is an important part of maintaining your entire bike. Not only does a dirty and poorly lubricated chain cause inconvenience when riding (squeaks and difficult pedaling), but it also has a detrimental effect on the associated elements of the bicycle. A dirty chain contributes to the rapid wear of the chain itself, as well as the rear sprockets of the cassette and chainrings of the system, which in turn leads to frequent and unreasonable expenses for the purchase of new parts.
Proper lubrication of the bike chain
The chain is cleaned, the lubricant is selected and now you need to move on to the actual process of lubricating the bicycle chain. This process is long and requires patience, because it is necessary to lubricate each video separately. You need to apply a little grease to each roller (one drop is enough). After all the rollers have received their portion of the lubricant, it is necessary to rotate the pedals so that the lubricant disperses. After all this procedure, you need to wipe dry the entire chain and stars of the bike. Ideally, we should have a chain lubricated on the inside, but dry on the outside. The chain is completely ready for work.
Proper lubrication of the bike chain
