The first step is determining the length of the bike parts
If you have to adjust the spokes on the front wheel of the bicycle, then you can not even deal with determining the length of the parts. it is believed that it is the front wheel that is structurally simple, the length of all spokes is absolutely the same.
As for the rear bicycle wheel, things are a little more complicated. The fact is that in this wheel the spokes are set of different lengths, since it is necessary to observe the difference in inclination.
Note: experts do not recommend that you independently determine the length of the spokes. For this, there are special calculators on the sites that allow you to get the necessary calculations online.
Fitting the spokes of a bicycle wheel
Adjusting the spokes on a bicycle is carried out in several stages. All work can be done at home if the necessary tools are available.
The second step is editing
To carry it out, you need some tool. a spoke wrench and a screwdriver. And you need to do the work in strict accordance with the step-by-step instructions:
- Lubricate the connection points with the nipples on the wheel parts and the threaded part of the spokes.
- If there is a recessed entrance on the flange only on one side, then the spokes must be installed from the opposite side.
- Nine spokes are installed in the flange. this is done through one hole, that is, there should be a free niche between the spokes.
- If the work is carried out with the rear wheel, then the spokes are mounted to the right of the hub.
- We find the same located on the right side of the valve inlet on the rim, place a spoke in it and twist the nipple, making 2 turns.
- From the first installed spoke, we count 4 inputs clockwise and mount the second spoke and also twist the nipple with two turns. Note:the sleeve with the threaded part must be located to the one who carries out the work.
- In the process of installing the spokes, you need to check the correct operation. the spokes must connect the rim to the right with the hub flange, and there should be three free inputs between the installed spokes.
The subsequent spokes are installed according to the same principle, and then the wheel must be turned towards you with the opposite side and the spokes must be installed in the order indicated above. Installation begins with the key spoke, which is located to the left of the valve inlet.
Note: when all the spokes are installed, you need to align the nipples to the same twist depth. That is why it is recommended to make 2 turns in each case so as not to make a mistake, and it will be easier to regulate them at the end of the work.
How to correctly install and / or tighten the spokes on a bicycle
No matter how the statement of bicycle masters sounds, but the problem with installing / replacing and tightening the spokes on a bicycle wheel is the most common problem when customers contact service points. But for experienced cyclists, such statistics are not at all surprising. thin spokes have a great influence on the dynamics of the bike, and the quality of riding, and on the safety of the bike.
In order to tighten the spokes, a special tool is used. a spoke wrench. The bicycle parts under consideration are installed and tightened by twisting the nipple, while the main point in the process is the uniform tension of all the spokes. this serves as a guarantee of even distribution of the load on the wheel rim.
In general, bicycle wheel lacing can be done in different ways, but the most popular and reliable are radial and cross. At home, experienced cyclists often make a three-cross spoke setting, that is, the spokes in the wheel intersect three times with each other.
How to tighten the spokes on a bicycle
The structural part of a bicycle wheel, which, according to its technical characteristics, is the rod connecting the hub and the rim, is called a spoke. It is the spoke that is designed to facilitate the design of the wheel, while not reducing its strength.
The spokes can be installed and tightened with your own hands. for this it is absolutely not necessary to possess any specific knowledge, which excludes contacting the bicycle service centers. For absolute beginners in this business, it is enough just to get acquainted with brief information about what types of spokes can be installed on a bicycle and how to change / tighten them correctly.
Types of spokes for bicycles
Bicycle spokes are divided into three large groups, which differ in their technical characteristics:
- by the thickness (caliber) of the knitting needles. this rod can have a thickness of 1.5 mm, 1.6 mm, 1.8 mm, 2 mm and 2.34 mm;
- by the type of head. bent spokes, used on assembled wheels, and straight spokes, installed on branded wheelsets;
- by design type. cylindrical with butted and flat (aerospitz).
Note: butting is a reduction in the thickness of the needle in the middle (central) part of it, although towards the edges the spoke acquires its declared thickness. Thus, manufacturers reduce the weight of the spoke, while not at all reducing its quality and functionality.
Step Three. Tensioning the Spokes
This step is considered final and easy to complete. You just need to make sure that the nipples are screwed in the same number of turns. If the needles are short, this can be determined by the number of visible thread steps in the nipples.

After all the steps are completed, you need to install the wheel with the dialed spokes on a special machine or any other device (you can use a bicycle for this). It is in this position that all the irregularities will be visible. the skew of the wheel in any direction can be corrected by adjusting the twist of the nipples. In most cases, half a turn is sufficient to align the wheel. Please note that such a check must be carried out twice. when the wheel is horizontal and when it is vertical.
Spoke torsion deformation
When tensioned on the needles, a torsional deformation is formed. If the spokes are left deformed after assembling the wheel, the whole setup will soon deteriorate. This will happen when the spokes return to their normal position. To avoid this, when working with a spoke wrench, you need to tighten the spokes more than necessary, and then return it a little back.
Set with a different number of crosses
The article describes a way to set a wheel in three crosses. If you are assembling a wheel with a different number of crosses, simply replace the corresponding numbers. For any number of crosses, the last intersection closest to the rim is intertwined, one spoke overlapping another.
Key spoke. the first installed spoke, its position determines the positions of all subsequent spokes. It should be on the side of the sprockets and will be the “tail” one. It is better to start with the “tail” spokes, since they are located on the inside of the hub flanges and will not interfere with the installation of the “leading” spokes.
Slide the key needle through the hole so that it runs inside the hub flange and the head of the spoke is on the outside.
The holes for the spokes on the rims are not located on the same axis, but offset one from the center to the right and to the left.
Spokes from the left flange pass through the holes shifted to the left, the holes on the right. to the right flange. The key spoke must go through the first hole, offset to the right, following the hole for the camera nipple.

It is most convenient to fill the wheel while sitting, and keep the rim on your knees. For beginners, it is better to fasten the spokes on the rim in groups. Traditional sets have four groups of spokes: half Half of the spokes come from the right hub flange, half from the left. On each flange, half of the spokes are “tail”, and half are “leading”:
- Tail spoke. The rear wheel has tail spokes. these are the spokes whose tension increases as the pedals are depressed. They are called “tail” because they are directed in the direction opposite to the rotation of the sleeve. In the illustrations for this article, the tail spokes are shown in blue and green.
- “Leading” spoke. These are the spokes that are directed in the direction of rotation. They are shown in black and gray in the illustrations.
The first group of spokes
Tighten the nipple a few turns. so that the spoke does not fall out. Pass the second spoke through the hub flange, one hole from the key spoke. This spoke must also go inside, and go into the rim hole located three from the first spoke (there should be three empty holes, do not count the hole for the camera nipple), slightly fasten the spoke.
Install all nine spokes of the first group in the same way. As a result, there should be one free hole between the spokes on the hub flange, and three empty holes on the wheel rim. All spokes must go through the right flange and go to the right holes on the rim.
Turn the wheel towards you again with the right side so that the stars are looking at you. Insert a third group spoke into any hole in the hub flange. Turn the bushing clockwise until it moves freely. When typing in three crosses, this spoke must intersect the three “tail” needles coming from the same flange.
The first two crossings of the spoke of the fourth group will pass outside the “tail” spokes. and the third intersection should be from the inside. To do this, during installation, you will have to bend the “leading” spoke.
There will be two holes on the rim where you can install the spoke of the third group, you must use the hole that is located on the same side of the rim as the side of the flange where the spoke comes from. This hole should not be near the “tail” spoke coming from the same hub flange.
The next seventeen “leading” spokes of the third and fourth groups are established according to the same rules.
Upon completion of the installation, check again that the spokes go alternately to the left, then to the right flange of the hub strictly through one.
Spoke and nipple requirements
It is better to use stainless steel knitting needles. They are durable and non-corrosive, unlike cheap chrome or galvanized carbon steel spokes. Titanium spokes are good for everything, but they are very expensive. Carbon spokes are too fragile and dangerous.
On the rear wheel of a multi-speed bike (with a large “umbrella”), it is better to use thicker spokes on the right side than on the left. Since the spokes on the left side are weaker, they are less likely to loosen over time.
Turning a pair of wooden knitting needles
The most common nipples are nickel-plated bronze. The thread of such nipples has low friction, and due to the material, they do not corrode for a long time. Aluminum nipples are used for high-end lightweight wheels. They are quite reliable, but they can only be used with rims that do not have aluminum caps, otherwise chemical welding may occur between the nipple and the cap.
Different bushings have different flange thicknesses. However, the bend of the spoke must fit snugly in the flange, otherwise the periodic tension will bend the spoke at the end, which will lead to its breakage. This can be avoided by laying small washers under each spoke head. Best bronze washers, 2mm bolt washers will work for most spokes. Some hub-flange combinations require two washers, some require a washer only for the spokes coming from the inside of the flange, or require two washers on the “inside” spokes and one washer on the “outside” spokes.
Before assembling the wheels, you need to decide on the number and thickness of the spokes, determine the required spoke length and in which spoke set you will assemble the wheel.
