Toilet paper is also not so good. it creates an even layer around the circumference, but the walls of the tire remain open. With wear, when the walls are covered with microcracks, this version of the sealant does not work. The inner foam tube has also been removed. It is filled with sealant and, accordingly, it does not work where it should.

A long time ago, in 2013, I switched to tubeless wheels. Tired of regularly glueing cameras, catching unexpected punctures in unexpected places, so a tubeless tire is a necessary and useful solution. The main punctures occurred due to thin wires, staples. This is a very small inconspicuous hole through which the wheel descends in ten minutes.

There are several methods for installing a tubeless. I chose the so-called tubeless ghetto option. In this version, there is a camera, but it is cut lengthwise and actually serves as a gasket between the rim and the tire.

The first step is to glue the holes from the knitting needles. You can use scotch tape, but this time I tried to seal it with reinforced tape. The main thing is that there are no sharp protrusions so that the camera does not rub against them.

Further along the radius of the rim, a hoop is made of thermal insulation for pipes. On a 26 “wheel, we take a 24” camera. We cut it lengthwise and put it on the rim. Then we put on the tire with one edge, a hoop made of thermal insulation, the second edge of the tire.

Next, it’s up to the magic ingredients. We take some toilet paper and fill it inside.

The main thing is that the paper does not stick out. The camera should be tightly pressed against the tire everywhere.

It turns out something like this. The “skirt” of the camera should run smoothly along the edge of the rim. Correct if necessary.

This is how it all looks assembled. The most interesting thing is to pump it all up. A hoop made of thermal insulation is exactly what is needed for this. it does not allow the sides of the tire to converge to the center and, accordingly, they are better pressed against the camera. Ideally, when you press the tire, it should “puff” through the nipple, in which the spool must first be unscrewed.

If it is not unscrewed, then we unscrew the spool from the nipple to make it easier to pump and then fill in the sealant. Further, in one place, we raise the sides with our hands as much as possible to the edges, then the entire tire is pressed more tightly against the camera and it will be much easier to plant it. Then we take a pump with good performance and put the tire in place. Usually, when the tire sits down, the air stops coming out, everything is completely sealed.

The insulation hoop sits tightly and does not allow air to escape even without a spool. 🙂

Next, we take the second important ingredient. liquid soap. Pour it into a convenient bottle of Decathlon sealant, dilute it with a little water and pour it into the wheel.

How it works. After some time, toilet paper will grind and mix with liquid soap into a homogeneous mass and then work for the benefit of reliably retaining air inside the wheel. This mixture protects against most punctures. There were no problems with her for 5 years. In winter, the mixture in the wheel does not collect in one lump and does not strum in the cold. In case of repair, it can be easily cleaned with water. It even helps to wash it so that it is very clean. 🙂

What to do in case of large cuts. To do this, I have a supply of superglue in the repair kit. The best gel is the one that spreads less. A patch is made from a piece of the camera and glued from the outside to the place of the cut. This is enough to get to the house and properly glue it from the inside. Twice I had to do such a marching repair. In the first case, I planted both wheels on beaver pencils in the stream and, despite the spare camera, sealed the holes and drove 50 km to the house. The tires survived. In the second case, in winter, I put the wheel on a wire sticking out from under the ice. I pasted over and drove the whole trip. Houses were sealed capaciously.

With tubeless tires, rolling is noticeably better. The wheels are hardly lighter. the weight of the sealant is about the same. In any case, it’s worth doing it. It works!

I make a sealant from the following components: remnant, water and finely chopped synthetic rope (re-cord). The remnant in the water will turn into a slurry, which will thicken. If necessary, it can be diluted with water without loss of properties. The fibers are very thin and do not disintegrate like paper. While observations show that the whole tire is covered up tightly. there is no need to pump up. To make it easy to install. I coat the bead and rim with liquid soap. In this case, it just well covers the micro-slots, allowing the tire to disperse and abut against the rim walls. Also, on soap, the tire immediately sits evenly, does not stick anywhere.

All this is good, but in comparison with the branded ones, the sealant has a minus. it does not patch forever, and is also designed for small punctures. Of course, it won’t keep cuts. The main task that he solves is to make it possible to get to the house (or a clean place and a good pump) and repair. to seal the hole. Fortunately, the soap is easily washed off.

To strengthen the structure, I cut a blank out of 4 mm plywood to fit the bottom. I just fixed it not inside, but outside. Box dimensions 140x300x400 mm.

From a metal strip 2×20 mm, an angle grinder cut four blanks 2x20x180 mm. And since the width of the standard rear trunk is 140 mm, the stripes overlapped it in width.

I stepped back from the edge of the strips by 15 mm and drilled a hole in them. From them I set aside 20 mm to the center of the workpiece and again drilled holes d 6 mm. they just hit the edges of the trunk bars.

I also drilled the corresponding holes in the plywood. I connected the blanks-strips, a regular bicycle rack, plywood, a box and tightened it with MB nuts from the bottom. It turned out, maybe not entirely aesthetically pleasing, but convenient.

DIY bike bag

The whole family loves cycling. it is both interesting and good for health. When traveling long distances, it is advisable to equip the transport with spare parts. a camera and patches, as well as a tool necessary for repair. That is why I sewed a simple and roomy bag.

On cardboard, I traced the inner contour of the frame (the upper corner next to the seat) of the bike with a marker. I cut off all unnecessary with scissors and rounded the corners, I got a triangular template (see the figure on page 15) (the dimensions are arbitrary and depend on the shape of the frame). Marker marked the places where the belts were sewn in for fastening to the frame.

Using a leatherette template, I cut out two blanks of the sidewalls in a mirror image and prepared an average sewn-in tape with a small allowance along the length.

Before installing the arm, determine which side it is suitable for. The lever that has a collar is suitable for the side that has a cable.

Now about the installation. The lever should be put on the axle, and a lock should be inserted into one of the holes. Start with medium. If you don’t like the way the brakes move, then simply reposition the lever lock. It should be borne in mind that they must stand in the same position.

Now screw the fixing screw in the hole in the axle. To tighten the screw, take the paint and run a little along the threads. Install the second brake lever in the same way.

Now let’s take the brake pads and install them (if you haven’t already). Do not overtighten them as they still need to be adjusted. First, install the pads so that they are perpendicular to the rim and brake levers.
