How to Make a Bike Step

Bicycle footrest

Many people say that a bike pedestal is not cool at all, and there is no need for anyone to put it on! But each person must make their own choice between “cool” and “convenient”. We will only show you the advantages and disadvantages of installing a footrest on your bike. And the choice will be yours anyway.

If you are driving through fields, forests, orchards on weekends, you usually have a lot of trees on your way. In such cases, a footrest is not particularly necessary. But this is a matter of habit. if you have a footboard, then it is comfortable enough to put the bike on to stop on the way. to rest, drink water. And you don’t have to throw your bike on the ground (after which the handles are dusty!), Or look for trees. For those who like to ride fast on a road bike, the footrest is just additional unnecessary weight. Therefore, such racers can do without this accessory. Almost every gram is important to achieve high speed on the road. Therefore, it is not advisable to install a footrest on a road bike.

Here is the situation when the footrest is not needed :).

If you are going on a cycling trip with tents and equipped your mountaineer with cycling pants (a special bicycle backpack that attaches to the trunk and resembles pants in shape) or any other load, then you find yourself in a more difficult situation. You can lean the bike against a tree if there are any. If not, then consider putting the bike on the ground with a loaded rack on the ground, you need to make an effort (do not throw it). However, if there is nothing beating there and you don’t feel sorry for your bike, then you can quit. But to raise it later will require even greater efforts. In addition, do not forget that the rack is not designed for lateral loading, and with a large mass of cargo and frequent “throwing and stowing” of the bike, the trunk may not withstand and break.

  • Have you decided to go camping with a bike? Then an article on how to choose a camping tent for you.
  • Touring cargo bike trailer.

Here’s another situation. we are looking for support everywhere.

Buying and installing a regular footrest for a bicycle will hardly help. after all, the load on the trunk redistributes the center of gravity of the bicycle, and the usual footrest will simply fold under this entire weight, or the bike will sling over it. Therefore, for such cases, you need a footrest that will fix the bike from the frame to the ground.

You can also look for a two-legged footrest. It has two points of contact with the ground and is more stable, but before placing a loaded bike on it, you should check its stability.

Another feature that needs to be taken into account when you put the bike on the step or against a tree, a post, a wall and much more (who has something nearby and what has enough imagination) is that the insidious front wheel has such an ability to spin and drive bicycle into an unstable, but rather recumbent position.

To eliminate this effect, you can wind a rubber band on the steering wheel, which will fix the front brake during “parking”. You can take an ordinary old camera and cut off a piece from it. And whenever you stop, putting rubber on the brake handle and locking the front wheel, you keep your bike from falling.

So there are the following types of bicycle footpegs:

  • an ordinary one-legged footboard that leans to the side and the bike is placed on it at an angle;
  • a two-legged footrest (like on motorcycles) provides greater stability to the bike;
  • a long footrest that links the frame to the ground is indispensable if you have a large backpack or cycling pants on the trunk.

Installing a footrest on a bike

The footrest does not require a separate installation. Some two-legged footpegs are also put in place, and tinkered with separately from the bike. Therefore, every time they have to be taken out of a backpack, or bag, and a bike is installed on them. Having a lot of weight and the stability of the footrest justifies this process, so it’s a matter of habit.

In general, someone puts the footpegs, someone does not. It’s just like with horns on the handlebars of a bicycle, someone considers them a necessity, and someone is an absurd fashionable trick.

We wish you to make the right choice that will facilitate your parking!

How to make a bicycle basket with your own hands. What are bike baskets

Mountain bikes, road bikes and, in particular, sports bikes are not designed for this accessory.

Mountings

There are several types of bike basket mounts. First of all, this is the position. The bicycle basket can be mounted both in front of the handlebars and behind the seat. The installation methods are also different, below are some of them.

Permanent handlebar mount

The bracket is attached to the handlebar and is integral with the rest of the basket. Most inexpensive, but not universal mount.

Quick-release handlebar mount. Permanently attached to the frame

The basket in this design replaces the trunk using its attachment points on the frame. The most convenient and reliable fastening, but constant use of such a basket is a rare case.

Materials

Natural materials

Indeed, on bicycles you can also find baskets made from natural twigs, for example, rattan. The woven material is environmentally friendly, very light, and, no matter how strange it sounds, it is reliable. Over time, the rods lose their properties, but up to 5 years, such a product is one of the best choices. There are only problems with mounts. It is not so easy to attach a basket and a sufficient number of rods to a small bracket element for a reliable structure.

Metal grid

The main block of materials for “branded” models is a metal mesh. It is lightweight, versatile and reliable enough. With proper metal processing, the mesh is not susceptible to rust, temperature extremes and does not lose its properties over time, unlike natural materials.

Plastic

Metal pipes, bracket and walls made of solid plastic or plastic mesh. this is the most practical bicycle basket. For ladies’ bikes or for serious camping trips, the manufacturers have the right plastic model.

Usually plastic accessories come with replaceable parts and, unlike solid metal alternatives, they can be easily replaced part by part and repaired after damage. In addition, plastic walls allow you to install additional elements of the interior space, for example, soft inserts for dogs, which will be described below.

Other materials

We’ve written about standard materials, but of course that’s not all. For example, there is a large layer of models of solid baskets, which are more logical to call “boxes”. with a stationary mount, they turn an ordinary bicycle with a basket into a cargo one, and they themselves are made of solid metal elements.

Homemade accessories also stand apart. Here you can find weaving from natural or synthetic materials, and fabric upholstery, and natural wooden boxes. there are simply no restrictions for imagination.

Pets

As a separate point I would like to talk about accessories for transporting animals. After all, if there are special armchairs for children, additional seats and even trailers, then little care for pets.

The bike basket is a rare accessory that can be very useful nonetheless. It is actively used both on walking bicycles and on village “workhorses”. It is not difficult to choose a reliable model, and many decide to make an accessory for themselves, which, due to the exceptional simplicity of the device, is quite possible.

How I made a bicycle basket with my own hands

Recently I wrote about how I turned the rear rack into a front rack and installed it on my PVZ 10 V bike. So now I’m going to put a basket on this rack, or rather a wooden box.

I will make this box myself. Although if I knew that similar boxes are sold in Ikea, I would still buy it there. But on the other hand, I made it exactly the width of my steering wheel and exactly in the dimensions that I needed.

Any boards are suitable for the box, the main thing is that they are strong. At home I had this rack from Ikea:

I took it apart a long time ago, but the boards lay idle. I used them to make the box. In addition to the boards, you will also need a square bar for the walls.

I used screws to connect all the parts together. I drilled holes in the boards, and a screw was screwed directly into the bars themselves.

I collected the box from the bottom, first to the bottom (of 3 boards) I screwed one side board, then 2, 3, 4. Then I screwed the racks (bars) and to them the upper side walls of the box. But I assembled this way due to the fact that I had grooves in the lower side walls and I inserted the bottom into these grooves for better rigidity, if the boards are ordinary, then it is better to assemble the frame (nail the side boards to the bars), and only then attach the very bottom.

As a result, it turned out to be such a strong, but very heavy box:

Next, I had to figure out how to attach it to the bike. Of course, I would like something quick-release, since it is not always necessary to carry the box with you, but so far I haven’t come up with anything better than to drill a few holes in the bottom and attach 4 clamps to the trunk.

How the bike behaves under load from a loaded box

Once the box was loaded over the top with various books (I think there were 15-18 kilograms for sure) and I confess to be honest it became very difficult to steer. the steering wheel was hard to spin and it was impossible to turn sharply, but this is a payback for the convenience of transportation.

There were also parking drawbacks, because of the heavy box (even when it is empty), the steering wheel, if not to hold it with your hands, always wants to turn in one direction or the other, which is why there were several cases when my bike fell, but here you just need to get used to or come up with a quick release mechanism.

That’s all for me, if you also made such a basket for yourself or want to do write in the comments it would be interesting to know about your experience.

What do travelers with a bicycle put in it? A bottle of water, some food, no further distraction by the lack of household trifles. But we will consider in detail the methods of fastening baskets and their purpose in this article.

Species variety of fasteners

Before dealing with the method of securing the basket to the bicycle, first consider the starting positions of such an accessory. There are two main positions:

  • on the front of the bicycle handlebars;
  • rear seat on trunk.
  • The basket is attached to the handlebars of the bicycle:
  • permanent, with a reliable and durable fastening (for example, a basket for a bicycle on a children’s handlebar);
  • steering rack that can be quickly removed.
  • The bike frame is taken as the basis for the fasteners. Reliable, durable and thorough.
  • Fastening to the trunk with removable elements.

Permanent handlebar mount

  • Option number 3. There are simply no attachment points. We solve the problem like this. A basket for a bicycle, that is, it is attached to the handlebars by hand. We put a clamp on the feathers, and fix the top of the basket with a clamp at a suitable point. This design is not durable and not strong. It can only be used for walking short distances.
  • Option No. 4. The steel bracket is attached to the handlebars and spliced with the basket. reliable than the third option, but will not differ in durability.

These features should always be considered when securing the basket to the handlebars.

Quick Release Handlebar Mount Option

Typical basket manufacturers have models that are designed to be instantly attached to the handlebars for directional travel. The cantilever version of the basket, which is quick-release, will become the traditional form.

The main advantage is the ease and simplicity of installation. Various modifications can withstand from one kilogram to fifteen.

The mounting options are different. From simple horns that secure the basket with a canopy to more complex mechanisms with brackets and clamps. It all depends on the purpose and capacity of the accessory.

Permanent fixing of the basket to the frame

This version of the basket will be fixed to the points of the frame for maximum reliability and comfort. The popularity of this location is very low. The most commonly used is a removable frame mount option. Permanent attachment. very rare.

Typically, such structures are made in the shape of the letter V. In such a basket you can carry significant baggage, large weight. If permanent fastening is carried out using a frame, then such a bicycle will become a reliable “workhorse” for trips to the country or for the transportation of permanent loads.

Mounts are varied, but all use points on the frame. Additionally, other elements of the bike can be involved.

Removable basket mount with base on the trunk

The design is not common. After all, the trunk itself is a kind of platform for transporting goods.

Most often, there are models made by folk craftsmen on their own. Products from serious manufacturers will not have a quick release design. Here you need details that will allow the basket to carry weight up to 35 kilograms.

The baskets mounted on the trunk have increased capacity and carrying capacity. This model can even be adapted to a mountain bike.

As a support, not only the trunk is used, but the stays of the rear of the bike. Additionally, it can be fixed with clamps to the frame. A self-made or purchased bracket will become the main part of the fastener.

The scope of such an accessory is tourist trips, long trips.

Where to place pets on a bike?

Special baskets are designed and sold for your pets. Of these, the most popular model will be the handlebar bike basket for dogs. It is the dog who will be able to endure a long bike ride if you are going out of town. The design features of such a product suggest the presence of a special cover, breathing holes and a soft bedding.

Carrying capacity does not exceed fifteen kilograms. Mounting takes place on the steering wheel. It can be removed quickly, or it can be mounted more durable. It all depends on the frequency of your walks with pets.

When choosing a basket and mounting options, be sure to think about the purpose and frequency of use of such a product.

Bicycle basket with colorful pompoms

The rest of the materials can be found in your own wardrobe or simply purchased.

So, you will need: Instructions

Secure the basket to the handlebars with cable ties, but not rigidly, but so that you understand where it should be. The best option looks like this: the upper edge of the basket rises slightly above the horizontal steering tube, while the clamps are fixed at the same distance from the stem, in those places that will wrap around the belts.

Take a marker and draw a line under the bottom edge of the cable tie. You will later make an incision along it, through which the belt will be passed. All the same must be done on the other side.

Before making an incision, place the strap against the marker line and make sure that the incision is not too narrow or too wide.

Take sharp scissors and carefully cut the holes in the wall of the basket.

Use glue to secure strips of vines or twigs around the cut to prevent further damage to the weave structure.

After the glue is dry, pass the belts through the holes prepared for them.

Check again that the slot size and the belt width match.

If you use a belt made of leather strips like the one in the photo below, you can do without punching holes. Just tighten the strap (not too tight or you will break the basket bars) and slide the buckle tab between the leather strips. Don’t cut off the excess belt just yet.

If you are dealing with a one-piece belt made of leather or vinyl, most likely there will not be a hole in the right place in it, so you will have to do it yourself. Mark the point where it should be, and only then remove the belt from the handlebars. Take a leather punch or drill with a 5 mm drill bit and prepare a wooden board.

First, make a few test holes in the part of the belt that will then be cut off to see how the material behaves. If the leather is not torn or cracked, proceed to drilling or punching a hole in the designated place.

Thread the strap through the slot in the basket and fasten it in the usual way.

Place the free ends of the straps inside the basket.

Thread the free ends through the slots again so that they are behind the back of the basket.

Apply a small amount of glue to the inside of the belt as close to the notch as possible and cut off the excess.

Fix the bonding area with clothespins until the glue is completely dry.

Remove your clothespins. Here’s what you should end up with:

If you are working with a braided belt, immediately tie the strips of leather together after cutting off the excess. For reliability, coat them with glue.

And of course you can decorate the basket to your liking. Pompons, belts or fringe. the choice of decor options is limited only by your imagination!

How to install a kickstand on a bike. Bicycle footrest

Bicycle footrest, what is this item, is it really necessary? This article explains in detail the types of footboards, as well as the materials from which they are made, the advantages and disadvantages of the attribute. You can also find out about the footrest attachment points, cases in which a bicycle support is needed like air, or when you can perfectly do without it.

Driving mode

Of course, each owner decides for himself whether to purchase such an accessory or not. Why does the choice depend? First of all, on the type of bike, because there are different models on the market, for example, walking, mountain or hybrid bikes. Then it is worth evaluating the mode of its use. For example, for a road bike, which is designed exclusively for fast movement on very smooth asphalt, a bicycle pedestal is not needed, it will even add unnecessary grams of weight and thereby affect speed. Or, for example, why such an accessory for a children’s bike?

A variety of accessories are on sale, which differ among themselves by the material of manufacture, the type of support and the method of fastening.

Stands for supporting a bicycle in an upright state are made of steel or aluminum. The steel footrest is highly reliable and durable, while the aluminum footrest is lighter in weight.

According to the number of supporting “legs”, the footboards are divided into one-legged and two-legged. When the rack of one bike is at an angle to the ground, in the case of two points of support, it can be installed almost vertically. Thus it is possible to achieve the fact that the front wheel will even be raised, as if “hanging” in the air. This will prevent the front wheels from spinning. The two-legged support adds stability to it, it looks like a motorcycle footpegs.

Depending on the design of the bike, the footrest can be mounted either on the side or in the center.

The footpegs produced are, as a rule, universal, they can be adjusted to any wheel size, since the design has a telescopic extension mechanism. If the owner wants to always install his “iron horse” strictly vertically, then he gets a long step with attachment to the frame.

Benefits

What situations a cyclist can safely avoid, having in his arsenal such an extremely useful “little thing” as a stand:

  • When parking, it becomes possible to avoid the bike falling when the front wheel is turned sharply.
  • Deformation of the trunk from falling is prevented, accordingly, it will be great for longer serving the owner.
  • When a bike falls to the ground, especially a heavily loaded one, it often gets very dirty in dust, mud, and the owner spends time cleaning, while the stand will help to avoid such situations.
  • Saves a lot of what used to be spent looking for a bike support in case of a stop.

What inconvenience can you expect?

During the movement, dirt will collect on such an accessory, so it must be cleaned regularly. She adds, albeit small, but still weight, the structure becomes heavier, it becomes more difficult to develop speed. If it is not properly secured, it may rattle when driving and distract attention from the road.

A footrest is not purchased if they clearly know the places where you can lean your bike on the route.

The footrest of this bike attribute is not only a fashionable accessory, it is also functional, comfortable, brings comfort to the owner, makes the bike stylish and modern.

How to choose a footrest for your bike: tips for choosing

There is no consensus on the need for a footrest, but it’s safe to say that it’s more comfortable with it than without it. However, there are situations where a footrest is even necessary. As with many other things, first you need to understand the purpose of use.

Walking skating

Riding in the evening or on weekends in the park with friends or with a girlfriend is very pleasant, and sitting on a bench and chatting is doubly pleasant. And the question “what to lean the bicycles on?” will not occur if they are equipped with a footrest. Otherwise, you have to look for trees, poles, or lean bicycles against a bench, narrowing the effective seating space. over, if you decide to stop for rest and socializing in the Volgograd steppe, bicycles without a footrest will have to be stacked on one side.

Working use

With constant travel in the city on business, the use of a footboard will make stopping much more convenient. It is good if there are bike parking lots at all stops. they partially replace the footboard. But if on the way you urgently need to make a stop, with this accessory you will not have to stand in an embrace with a bicycle or run to the nearest post.

Tourism

Oh yes, the step is essential here. After all, lifting a bicycle loaded with things from the ground is not the most pleasant experience. On top of that, lying on its side can damage some of the things in the bags.

Just as there are no standard bicycles, there are no standard footpegs. Let’s analyze the differences between the footpegs by the type of attachment.

Mounts between the frame bottom bracket and the rear wheel. Most road bikes, or simply inexpensive mountain bikes, have footrest pads. Footpegs vary in length depending on the diameter of your wheels.

However, the lack of a platform is not a problem, because footboards have also been invented for bicycles that do not have a special place for their fastening. This footrest has not only a bolt, but also a clamp placed on the chain stays. It is universal because it has a retractable mechanism, so it fits on wheel diameters from 20 to 28 inches.

Universal pen rest

Attaches to the lower frame stay on the left side. Has varieties.

Differs in greater rigidity

The most convenient option for tourism. The aforementioned footpegs will not work because the load on the bike will simply tend to tip it over. With such a footrest, the bike will be very stable, and in addition to this, you can fix minor malfunctions in the field.

Stand

An exotic thing, but known in narrow circles. Foldable, lightweight, small-sized, which is very important in tourism, when there are already a lot of extra pounds on the bike. Its only drawback is that you have to get it from somewhere. But the bike will stand on it, rooted to the spot, because it is placed under the lower tube of the frame.

Bicycle footpegs: types and tips for choosing

In our time, the variety of bicycles is as great as the variety of different attributes to them. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the topic of bicycle footpegs. This small, unobtrusive detail is a very convenient addition to the bike. We will also consider bicycle footpegs for 16, 26, 29 inches wheels and review the brands Cube, Merida and others.

What is it for?

A footrest is a part of a bicycle that provides a stable position of the vehicle when it is stationary. Public opinion in the usefulness of this accessory is fundamentally different: some of the footrest is necessary for cycling in the same way as wheels, others consider it very uncomfortable and remove it from a new bike as soon as possible.

A footboard is necessary under certain conditions in which the ride is carried out. Most often, a bicycle is used for:

  • trips to parks, bike zones, courtyards, paths and sidewalks;
  • movement on highways and city roads;
  • cycling tourism (around the city, hills, forest roads);
  • cycling.

There are a number of cases where a bike stand is not needed. For example, it is not needed at all for a tricycle.

For those who cannot imagine cycling without a footrest, it is often needed as an additional accessory. Indeed, during measured walks through the zones of parks, stadiums or playgrounds, it makes no sense to use a footboard: you can hold the bike yourself or lean it against a tree or a bench, for example. In such cases, the kickstand does not play an important role, but it is not necessary to remove it.

Another group of people are cyclists on city bikes. They use special road bikes with either one or multiple gears or an integrated planetary gear system. For these bicycles, the footrest is installed by the manufacturer.

It is simply impossible to lean it against something and put it steadily, so a footrest will be very useful here.

Highways. This is a group of cyclists who ride the lightest bikes. The complete absence of all accessories, including footpegs, bells, mirrors, trunks, is essential for speed development. The weight indicator plays an important role during acceleration and further coasting on asphalt. Considering that the stand is not at all heavy, the question arises why not leave it. However, every road driver knows that when driving, the influence of each gram increases several times.

One of the popular hobbies among owners of a two-wheeled horse is cycling. Riding is over rough terrain and involves many obstacles such as uneven roads, thick grass, bushes, ravines and steep slopes. If a bike without a stand is to be placed on the ground, it will create an obstacle for other cyclists. In this case, it will be much more difficult to move it in a lying position, it may be difficult to choose a place where to put the bike.

When the luggage rack is heavily loaded, the stand allows you to put the bike in a stable position. However, pay attention to the surface where to put the heel of the footrest. It must be firm so that the bike does not rock.

A stand is required for a touring bike. Loaded with everything you need, it will be easy to stably place it if you need to stop, have a snack, rest or take photos of the area.

Cycling people do not really need a footrest. It must be removed during competitions, as well as when riding in the mountains or participating in “dancing on two wheels”, performing tricks.

Bicycle accessories. Part 1.

Good afternoon, dear readers. Since the cycling topic turned out to be interesting for some readers, I decided to continue it in the field of bicycle accessories. I wrote this article specifically for a bicycle site, but since the authorship belongs to me, I post it for a wide review with new additions. I do not pretend to be know-it-all, and if I did not take into account something, write. I will definitely add it to the best of my knowledge and capabilities.

Links to previous articles on choosing a bike:

Any serious bicycle manufacturer provides its buyer with the opportunity to personally choose for himself exactly those accessories that suit him, leaving the factory complete set of the bike in the simplest form. That is why, almost all brands of bicycles are equipped with the most common pedals, seats and grips (handlebars). The only thing that you should not count on is a full line of branded accessories, exactly the brand to which your bike belongs. As practice shows, not all branded accessories look cool, and for some brands they are simply limited in variety. Therefore, when choosing accessories, be guided by personal needs and taste. There are firms that specialize in the production of only trunks, pedals, etc. And I must note that their assortment is usually always richer.

This memo will help you choose bicycle accessories based on your personal understanding of their need and purpose.

A basic list of recommended accessories:

Bicycle footrest

Bike footpegs are bought by those riders who are used to parking their bike in an upright position. Often when traveling, there is a need to make a stop or a short rest. In this case, the footpegs act as protection of the bike body from dirt and scratches that can occur if the bike is placed on the ground, supported by a fence or tree. Vertical parking is also relevant if a load is attached to the bike. The footpegs are made of durable alloys and are usually attached to the rear stays. They are easy to install and adjust in height thanks to special screws. There are special footpegs that are recommended for use on a bicycle with disc brakes.

WHAT ARE THE BIKES? FOOTREST CLASSIFICATION

Before buying a bike foot, it’s important to understand the different types. Depending on the design features and mounting methods, the following types of footrests are distinguished:

  • Carriage. suitable for city bicycles, flat roads. The footrest is placed next to the bottom bracket and is capable of holding the bike in a tilt position. It is small and able to withstand a significant load, especially if it falls on the trunk. A stable position can also be achieved by hanging a load on both sides of the steering wheel.
  • Rear wheel. located on the rear wheel axle or mounted on a feather, allows you to adjust the distance to the rear bicycle wheel.
  • Front wheel. suitable for touring or city, mountain biking. This method of fastening makes it possible to carry a large load on the trunk. In this case, the main load goes to the rear wheel, the front wheel counteracts the fall. It is in the front that you can hang a bag or a bag, which is convenient for cyclists.
  • Double. symmetrical center stand. It resembles a flyer and lifts the bicycle wheel slightly. Attaches this accessory between the bottom bracket assembly and the wheel at the rear, ensuring an even weight distribution. Due to the huge area at the heel of the foot, a level position is achieved. There is also a minus of this design. a decent weight is not less than a pound. On the other hand, if you transport a significant load on a large, this disadvantage will be insignificant. To attach the double footrest, you need a special platform, which is found on many models of mountain and road bikes.
  • Under the frame. it is also called the “long” leg. Externally, the design resembles a long tight pin with flyers along the edges. One of them is attached to the frame and the other is placed on the ground. This is the best bike for hiking, but it won’t fit on a city bike.
  • The center stand is easy to install, even if there is no dedicated mounting area. It is equipped with a special retractable mechanism, as well as a bolt and a clamp that are attached to the chain stays. Another plus of this accessory, it fits almost all bikes, the wheel diameter range is 20. 28 ”. These are suitable models for kids bike.
  • The bike footrest is always mounted on the left, it is more rigid. It can be easily installed on both the upper and lower frame stay.
  • Telescopic. allows you to change not only the length, but also the slope. The leg is mounted regardless of the wheel diameter and the type of bike. But you can only adjust the angle and length once, before installing. Everything needs to be fine-tuned so that the bike doesn’t fall. The price for such a footboard will be much higher.
  • The foldable foot helps create a stable position great. It is mounted in the hub area, directly on the rear wheel.
READ  How to set up disc brakes on a bicycle

The specific length of the footrest is suitable for the specific wheel diameter. For example, for 16 inches. this is 18-20 cm.On a children’s bike with a wheel diameter of 20 inches, a footrest with a length of 22 cm is suitable. For 26 inches, this is a leg with a length of up to 27 cm, for 28 and 29 inches, a length of at least 29 cm is suitable.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT OPTION?

In addition to the wheel diameter, it is important to pay attention to the type of bike and riding conditions. For baby bikes, you need the simplest side step. A touring bike can be fitted with a two-legged footboard, while a city bike can be fitted with a bottom bracket model. The single-legged steel footrest with carriage attachment is suitable for multi-day cycling trips. For heavy e-bikes, choose the strongest model.

Another important criterion is the material of the bike foot. Typically, these are aluminum, titanium or steel. Let’s consider them in detail:

  • Aluminum bike footpegs are light but expensive and are more fragile.
  • Steel are able to withstand any load, they are heavier than titanium and aluminum.
  • Titanium. they are highly durable, will last more than one year. In addition, they are lightweight, like aluminum. On the other hand, such a leg for a bicycle is more expensive, it is rather difficult to find it.

Bicycle footrests

Wheels, handlebars, pedals and a saddle attached to the frame. this is how a bicycle is depicted on diagrams or signs, for example, bicycle parking. In fact, a bike, even the simplest, is equipped with various attributes, both necessary and not so. These include all devices, from the trunk with fenders to the bell, rear-view mirror and parking stand.

The footrest is a special accessory for the bicycle that gives it a stable position when stationary. There is often debate among cyclists about the usefulness of this device: some simply cannot live without a footboard, but others absolutely do not need it. over, they even take it off the bike they just bought. And if you look at it from an objective point of view? How much this accessory justifies itself, we will consider further.

Bicycle stand: where you need it, and where not

The expediency of using a footboard is determined based on the conditions of movement. The main areas of use of the two-wheeled horse:

  • Relaxing rides in parks, sidewalks and paths.
  • Driving on city roads.
  • Moving on the highway.
  • Cycling: city and cross country cycling (hills, forest roads).
  • Cycling in various directions.

For representatives of the first group, a bicycle footboard will serve as an excellent attribute for beauty. Indeed, with simple measured trips around courtyards, parks or playgrounds, there is no particular point in putting a great. As a last resort, you can hold it behind the wheel or lean against something (a tree or a post, for example). Although, if there is a stand, you can sometimes use it and not remove it from the bike: it does not ask for food, and its absence is not important.

The next group is cyclists who ride around the city on “city bikes”. road bicycles with one or more gears or with an installed planetary gear system. As a rule, the footrest is installed on them by the manufacturer.

Moving on to the highways. Anyone who has tried to lift a road bike has always wondered how light it is. Almost complete absence of accessories: there is no bulky trunk, shields, mirrors and bells. There will be no footrest here either. What’s the matter? At high speeds, the weight of the bike is very important: the lower it is, the easier it is for the cyclist to accelerate on asphalt and coast. But how much does this stand weigh? Hardly more than a pound, right? Yes, it is absolutely correct, however, every gram is of fundamental importance to highways, because when driving, its effect on speed increases significantly!

What if you need to park? There are two options: put the bike on the ground and close the rear wheel with an anti-theft cord, or tie the bike frame to a post, pipe, tree, or, if there is a bike parking, drop the bike on it.

Cycling is a popular hobby among lovers of two-wheeled vehicles. Perhaps the importance of a bicycle peg in this area can hardly be overestimated. Driving on rough terrain is associated with constant obstacles: the roads are uneven and surrounded by dense grass, ravines, steep slopes. If the bike is put on the track itself when stopping, it may interfere with other cyclists or cars. The kickstand will help position the bike off the side of the road, and even if it gets in the way, it’s very easy to move.

The stand allows bike travelers to position the bike evenly when the trunk is heavily loaded and serves as a support around which the weight of the entire load is distributed. It is only important to find a hard surface, especially if the heel area is small.

Among biker travelers, most of the bike stands on a stand whenever you need to get off it to rest, have a snack, take pictures of the area or inspect for malfunctions.

Do you need a kickstand on a sports bike? In principle, if it stands idle for a long time, then yes. But in the process of cycling competitions she is simply removed from the bikes: she is unnecessarily. For example, why should she be during extreme descents from the mountain (downhill), when the cyclist simply will not stop and, even more so, set the bike. The same goes for bicycles used in BMX: “dancing on two wheels”, tricks on a dirt track, vert, street.

Varieties of footboards

The classification of devices is outrageously simple: distinguish between “carriage”, “rear-wheel”, “two-legged” footboards and stands under the frame.

City bikes designed for city and flat terrain are already equipped with the first type of footpegs. They are located in the area of the carriage mechanism and keep the bike in an inclined position. As a rule, the heel of such footpegs is small, which does not allow the bike to stand in the sand or on scattered small stones. Such stands do not withstand a large load, especially on the trunk, but they perfectly allow you to balance a bike, if you hang a bag or backpack on the steering wheel from the opposite (mainly right) side.

Sometimes on road bikes you can see stands attached to the drive wheel. They are also present on mountain bikes. With this support, you can load the rack: all the weight falls on the rear wheel, and the rest of the bike resists the fall. This option is good for tourists: in addition to the knapsack on the trunk, you can also hang the backpack on the steering wheel on the other side, and load the middle part of the frame from it.

The “rear” supports are not always attached to the wheel axle. They can also be placed on the pen and the distance from the rear wheel can be adjusted.

The “bipedal” symmetrical supplies are very similar to their motorcycle counterparts. They resemble flyers in shape. A bike with this kickstand stands with a slightly raised front wheel. The weight of the bike and the load on it is evenly distributed between the stand and the rear wheel. Distinctive features are the level position of the standing bike and the large area of the stubborn heels. Disadvantages: rather large weight, about 600 grams. However, with a 20-kilogram backpack, this weighting will not be too noticeable.

make, bike, step

And finally, let’s get acquainted with the so-called long footrest, or stands under the frame. In shape, it is a tight long pin with flyers along the edges: one for securing the frame, the other with stops for installation on the ground. Also an excellent option for travelers, but absolutely pointless when used on city bikes.

The bike stands level, and the weight and load on it are evenly distributed between the front and rear of the bike, thanks to the connection of the middle of the frame to the road surface. Better to use on hard surfaces, in sands the stand can get stuck and lose stability.

Nevertheless, with a few exceptions, a bicycle footboard is a useful attribute that will not interfere with it on the road and will help to place a two-wheeled horse, and not dismissively put it on the ground or lean against something. However, how to handle the bike. to put it on, lay it down or lean against it. is a matter of habit, the main thing is that it does not cause any inconvenience.
