How to properly clean the chain and mechanisms
You should not spare your efforts on the chain. The dirt is wiped off with a stiff brush (you can take a shoe brush). In order not to stain the floor and hands, we put it on a thick rag, and put gloves on our hands. In the longitudinal direction, brush along the chain several times, then turn over and repeat the same.
An excellent option would be a special device. a chain wash. It is especially useful in cases where the gaps between the rollers are clogged with heavily hardened clay or the chain is not removable.
Cleaning the chain with a sander will probably get rid of the dirt faster, but it will also leave cuts on the outer surfaces. If the chain has already seen the views and is not afraid of mechanical stress, remove it from the bike, fold it into a circle and carefully pass it with a nozzle. This method will well clean the dirt from the outside (and will scratch the chain), but it is ineffective if dirt has accumulated between the rollers.
Kerosene is what remarkably relieves the chain from the stuck dusty-oil suspension. It is placed in the tray in such a way that all the gaps between the rollers are open. Cleaning time. from 12 hours to 24 hours. After kerosene, the chain is wiped with a dry clean cloth.
Cleaning of switches: carefully and methodically all dirt is removed with a damp cloth, abrasive products cannot be used. The same applies to a dirty brake:
- Remove the pads, wipe them.
- Use a moistened clean sponge to collect all adhering dirt from the pressure mechanism.
- Wipe the cables.
- Lay out the brake mechanism, pads and mountings separately, allow to dry completely.
It is also better to clean the stars by hand: it is much more effective than washing them under the tap. Since the surface of the sprockets is not only dirty, but also oily, a mild cleaning agent (for washing dishes, for example) is just right here.
A little cleaning compound is applied to a sponge soaked in hot water. With a foamed sponge we pass through problem areas. First, the dirt is thoroughly removed with the hard side of the sponge, then the surfaces of the stars are wiped dry with a clean soft cloth or rag. Particular attention should be paid to the gaps between the teeth, as well as between the stars themselves. Washing direction is from top to bottom. There is also a special brush for cassettes on sale. It is compact and convenient:
Compared to washing under running water, cleaning the sprockets by hand has disadvantages:
- it is difficult to crawl into the space between the stars;
- dirt can be pushed even deeper;
The main advantage of the manual method is that the surface of the stars does not deform, water is not poured where it is not necessary.
Where to wash your bike
Washing the bike in the bathroom
- You can wash your bike not only at home, but also at a car wash. The process of washing a bike at a car wash is very quick and takes a few minutes. High pressure is strictly contraindicated, it is advisable to wash yourself at a car wash where there is such a service.
There may be several options for washing places:
- In the courtyard of a private house.
- In the garage.
- At the car wash.
- Houses in an apartment.
- On the staircase or under the staircase.
Let’s start with the ideal option. there is a private house or garage.
Here you can easily wash your bike without fear of getting dirty, using a hose or just a bucket of water. Perhaps especially advanced bikers, besides motorists, even have small-sized carcher washes. It is very quick and convenient to wash with them, although there are some nuances, which we will talk about below.
You can also wash your bike at a car wash. This is not to say that this is a very common service (although I personally saw some of it in the price list), but often car washers take on this simple matter for them. The nuances are the same as when working with home Kerher.
Outdoors. next to a river, a lake. Most often this is an intermediate option to clean your iron horse on a hike or after a mud section of the road. This is where most of the dirt and road dust is usually washed away, especially the wheels, transmission and frame. You don’t need to completely throw it into the water. just put the wheels in the water and wash calmly.
As for attempts to wash the bike in seawater, it is probably clear that it is highly undesirable to do this, because sea salt, once dry, will continue to work as an abrasive and dramatically increase the possibility of corrosion. Well, or at least wash off the main dirt with sea water and then thoroughly wipe the bike with fresh water to wash out the remaining salt.
We washed it, put it on the shore, so that it would definitely dry out before the next stage of the journey, and rest
Yes, and don’t forget to lubricate it after drying.
Washing in the apartment or on the staircase. The most inconvenient, but common option.
In this case, you need to be careful and immediately clean up after yourself.
As a child, we still washed our bikes under the porch. They took out water and rags in a bucket. and the whole crowd scrubbed all the big ones at once. This method had two big advantages: Firstly, there was no need to clean up after ourselves, and, secondly, while the bicycle was washed and dried, we continued to fool around. And bringing one or two buckets of water in the elevator (they still worked normally everywhere then) or even running away on foot. for us was no problem.
Washing in the bathroom, in my opinion, is quite real, but not the most convenient option.
Firstly, the bathroom and the bathtub itself are simply often too small to break in with a bicycle, dragging it around the apartment and not getting anything dirty at the same time.
Secondly, most often you need to disassemble the bike or remove at least the front wheel. otherwise it simply won’t fit into it. At the same time, try not to scratch the bathroom itself with a fork without a wheel.
Thirdly. After washing the bike, you will also need to wash the bathroom from dirt. Consider one more thing: if the wheels have tires made of cheap rubber (not branded), then they can leave black marks on the tile or on the white surface of the bath itself when the wheel strikes against the bathroom wall or on the tiles.
And fourthly. Not every housewife will be happy that a bicycle is also washed in the bathroom.
Those who like to wash in the bathroom with a bicycle would like to wish from the bottom of my heart to move to the next stage of cycling as soon as possible and start washing each other in the bath, not the bicycle. In my opinion, it has much more benefit
So everyone decides for himself. where and how to wash his iron friend.
Bike wash with Karcher
This type of cleaning is great for removing dirt, certainly faster than home cleaning, and the quality of cleaning is much better. However, not all cyclists agree that knocking dirt off a bike at a car wash is a good way to go. Why?
The jet is very powerful, so a safe distance from the hose to the bike must be maintained. Despite this, there is still a risk of a jet hitting the bushings, their mechanical damage or water leakage inside.
We bypass the bushings, it is undesirable to pour water over the carriage. In some cases, the spray can knock paint off the frame. True, there is no need to talk about the quality of this paint, tk. it must withstand mechanical stress and harder. It is undesirable to clean the sprockets with Karcher, they can be easily bent, and also let water inside the rear hub.
And finally After washing the bike, you need to slightly lubricate the outer surfaces of the bushings and carriage, and also apply the correct lubricant to the chain and sprockets. After that, the bike is calmly going back. Washing and cleaning will not take much time, but it will give comfort on trips and extend the life of the entire bike.
What you need to wash your bike:
- Naturally water.
- Sponge (preferably double-sided).
- Stiff bristled brushes, toothbrush for cleaning tight spaces or special brush for cleaning cassette.
- Soft cloth.
When washing is great, besides water, it is good to use ordinary laundry soap (dissolve it in water) or any ordinary household detergent. Fairies are most often recommended, but others do the same. Although, to be honest, in our childhood we always washed only with water, without any Fairy and Gala. But after this house they washed their hands with soap.
I do not recommend washing with various detergents. They often leave divorces, which are not so easy to get rid of later.
Car shampoos can also be used instead of detergent or for a clean wash after the main dirt has been washed off. They are softer and form a protective wax film on metal surfaces, which has additional protective properties and gives the bike a peculiar shine.
There are also special detergents for bicycles, for example, Pro-clean, Pedro’s, etc., which not only wash away dirt, but also various bituminous, oil and other stains of unknown nature.
To wash away stubborn dirt, when washing by hand, use brushes or the hard side of a sponge. We rub streaks and streaks with the soft side of the sponge. Finally, wipe the bike with a clean dry cloth.
Be sure to check that no water remains inside the frame pipes. it will dry there for a very long time and cause rust.
How to wash your bike
If there is a lot of dried dirt, wet it and clean it off when it is already well wet. It is best, of course, to wash it off with a pressure of water or, if I wash it with my hands from a bucket, then brush off the dirt with a brush. You can use the hard side of the sponge, but then gently.
Try to rinse off the maximum amount of dirt with water, so that later on the paint on the bike parts will not scratch with the remaining particles when working with a sponge.
Then, as usual, nothing special. Try not to clean off the dirt with any wires, knives, sharp pieces of iron. take care of paint and varnish. To do this, there are brushes (including an old toothbrush) and a jet of water. In some parts of the bike, you can only brush off dirt with an old toothbrush.
A common mistake when washing is forgetting to wash the feathers, the bottom tube of the frame and especially the carriage from below.
If the bike is stored at home, then the tires, of course, are washed more thoroughly, if in the garage or in another place. here at will. But still try to wash as much dirt from the tread as possible. otherwise, its grip on the surface will be poor.
Often we washed the wheels simply by putting them in a bowl of water and, slowly spinning it in the water, washed out all the dirt.
The wheel (rims and spokes) are not afraid of water, but after washing them with a jet, it is still better to wipe them again with a sponge, and then with a dry cloth.
Bushings, cassette, carriage should be washed, being careful not to get water inside, especially if it is some kind of Auchan bike.
Thoroughly wash away any dirt in the rear and front gearshift mechanisms.
The most difficult step in washing is washing the transmission: chains, cassettes and systems. We will not dwell on this here, since everything is described in the article How to properly wash and lubricate a bicycle chain.
If there is a suspension fork on your bike, wash your feet carefully so that water does not get under the boots.
How to wash your bike; what means to use
A garden hose is best for washing your bike, but the water pressure should not be too strong. You can also use a bucket of water, only the water in the process of washing, the bucket should always be clean, it should be changed often. Many people ask. is it possible to wash a bike with a Karcher? Yes, you can, but it must be borne in mind that Karcher is a high pressure washer and it is worth washing the bike with it with the weakest pressure. Washing the bike under strong pressure can damage the attachments of mountain bikes. In addition, water under pressure can penetrate into the closed elements of the bicycle. the carriage, the hub.
As a detergent to improve the quality of washing, car shampoos are best. You can also use ordinary detergents, or better Fairy, as a bicycle shampoo. Well, in general, there are a lot of detergents for bicycles on sale now. Do not use detergents, they will leave streaks.
It is best to apply detergent and wipe dirt off the bike with a soft brush. Sponges and rags should be discarded, as dirt and dust particles get stuck in them, which I scratch the paintwork.
Chain washing. Bicycle chain washer
The chain is very susceptible to dirt when driving, not only in the rain, but also on asphalt roads in dry weather. The chain is the element of the bicycle, which should always be contained in the frequency, the rate of its wear and associated parts depends on it.
The ideal option for washing the chain is to have a special machine for washing the bicycle chain. The machine is filled with a special cleaning agent or soapy water. By passing the chain through this machine, you can wash it completely, including hard-to-reach pin joints.
If you did not have time to acquire a chain machine, this does not mean that it is impossible to thoroughly wash it. You just need to remove the chain and wash it in a specially prepared bath with a solvent or similar liquids.
Bicycle chain washer
About mountain biking. How and what to lubricate the bike?
The bicycle is a unique mechanical invention of mankind. And he certainly needs lubrication to improve performance. Proper lubrication of all moving parts is essential to reduce friction between them and facilitate movement. Therefore, beginners ask themselves the question: when and how to do it correctly.?
Special oils, liquid in consistency, are suitable for lubrication of all types of chains, damping systems. The structure of the oil penetrates well into hard-to-reach places, ensuring in the future the trouble-free operation of bicycle assemblies and components.
When is the best time to tidy up your bike? Do not forget that it is imperative to clean the body of the part from dirt before lubricating. To do this, you will need the following necessary tools and tools: a bucket of very hot water, car shampoo or dishwashing detergent, brushes, sponges, an old toothbrush for hard-to-reach places, narrow flat screwdrivers, degreaser, rags. We wash the bike and let it dry for a few hours or wipe it with a rag. Only then we proceed to the procedure for lubricating the parts.
Fast cleaning This procedure serves as an intermediate between major cleanings. This can be the removal of dirt from the chain without directly dismantling it. To do this, you can wash the chain from dirt with a rag and brush, or use a special machine to clean the chain. It all depends on the possibilities of your budget.
Major cleaning To do this, you will have to remove the chain from the bike. Depending on whether there is a connecting link on the chain or not, squeezing may additionally be required. After dismantling the chain, place it in a container with a cleaning agent and use a brush and rags to wash it to maximum cleanliness.
5 Common MTB Drivetrain Cleaning & Lubing Mistakes | How To Avoid Them
It is better to change the water in the container after each remedy. In addition to the chain, other important components should be well cleaned. For convenience, it is recommended to remove the rear wheel to wash the cassette and disassemble the rear derailleur foot with rollers, then get to the tensioner roller, in the case of the tensioner itself installed on the bike.
Cleaners and Lubricants Experienced cyclists have identified several topical cleaners for excellent dirt and lubrication from your bike.
WD-40 Sprayer with fine and long tubular nozzle. A huge plus of the tool is easy access to time-consuming component connections. Will help remove rust and remove old grease from the surface.
2K Spray Ideal for cleaning and lubricating switches, threads and cables. The aerosol can is adapted to work even in a hard-to-reach place to wrap around bicycle parts. If you need to separate damaged parts, use LM40 and LM47 aerosols. Among the key ingredients is kerosene. It is this substance that will gently make this difficult procedure. The surplus can be removed with a cloth.
Liquid oil Universal agent for all types of chains, shock absorbers. The structure of the oil envelops the surface of the treated area 100%. It is characterized by a long-lasting effect for the smooth operation of parts. The disadvantage is a strong thickening of the consistency in the cold and the likely collection of dirt when riding in bad weather.
Calcium-containing greases A popular type of grease for the care of all kinds of parts and assemblies. The advantage of such a lubricant is stability on the surface of the parts (the formation of a protective layer for excellent bike performance). Unlike lithium products, they have a high level of adhesion and anti-corrosion effect. Bicycle cosmetics with m calcium do not react with aluminum, so they are more expensive in price and are used to care for expensive bikes. The tool will take care of the sealing of the joints.
Lithium Lubricants Helps keep your bike’s undercarriage in good shape. These greases are suitable for the maintenance of bearing axles and carriage. A substance called lithium gives the product a specific slip, it does not thicken at temperatures up to 50 ° C and does not liquefy when heated to 150 ° C. Negative nuance. high level of water solubility.
Silicone Lubricants Easily apply to bike parts. Can repel dust and water, but dry faster.
Teflon based lubricants The composition uses a substance for all types of chains. The fluid has an extremely low coefficient of friction relative to the contacting solid surfaces of the chain. For better penetration into hard-to-reach areas, Teflon grease is diluted with oil or solvent. The ratio of the components depends on the operating conditions (dry asphalt road, dusty primers or wet roads). It exists in the form of an aerosol can, but its use is fraught with too fast a consumption, therefore it is better to give preference to a liquid analogue.
Wax lubricants Can last several months in dry driving conditions. Frequent mechanical cleaning of the chain is not required. But the wax itself can fall off over time in the form of scales and flakes. It is difficult to treat hard-to-reach areas with this type of lubricant.
Graphite Lubricants Good for overloaded components. An important plus is the long-term effect. Minus. the grease very much stains everything that comes into contact with it.
How to carry out the lubrication procedure correctly? Begin lubricating the bike from any node. Lubricate cassettes and chain sprockets several times and turn the crank arms counterclockwise. A small amount of lubricant is sufficient. Remember, it shouldn’t be too thick. Your cycling comfort depends on the regularity of the procedure. the chain will not buzz, you will immediately feel lightness and freedom in shifting gears. In addition to lubricating, keep an eye on the mileage of the bike chain. On average, after every two thousand kilometers, a part needs to be replaced due to sagging, fuzzy gear changes and damage to the cassette sprockets on the rear wheel.
To lubricate the brakes, clamp them and apply the agent to the cable and pivot, the point of entry of the cable into the jacket. If your bike is equipped with V-brakes, try not to get oil on the rim. otherwise, the rim must be wiped off, otherwise the braking performance will be reduced to zero. Aerosols for a more metered spray are best suited for lubrication. Apply a drop of oil to the outlet and inlet of the cables.
The carriage is one of the key components of the bicycle, which sets the working impulse to other parts of the device. The speed and ease of movement depends on its condition. You will need a thicker lubricant to lubricate the carriage than a chain or cables.
Wheel axle bearings require frequent lubrication. The care scheme for them is identical to the previous one.
All moving parts must be lubricated in the front and rear derailleurs. They are often clogged with deposits from the thickened mass of grease and dirt around the perimeter. They can be gently removed with a flat screwdriver. Move the switch in different directions to see which parts require more lubrication. Remember to machine the rear derailleur roller bearings. they directly affect pedaling.
To process the rollers, you need to apply a dotted liquid on the axis to relieve them of squeak and tight rotation. Lubricated rollers are capable of turning with minimal resistance. For the procedure, experts recommend using aerosol products. When lubricating the chain, it is important to apply lubricant to each link and preferably in a thin layer. If you are using a liquid lubricant, you can use a syringe or oiler for more accurate application.
Taking care of the front shock absorber allows you to travel more comfortably over difficult terrain. A good shock absorber can handle both small and large bumps, so keep it in good condition. Depending on weather conditions, the suspension fork is filled with oil of a certain viscosity, the same is true for the rear shock absorber.
After lubrication, it is worth scrolling the pedals, pressing the brake levers a couple of times, shifting gears. Remove excess grease so that it does not collect dust later. When using an aerosol, make sure that the jet hits all hard-to-reach places. Avoid getting oil on tires, rims, disc brake rotors and other parts.
Chain cleaner: is it necessary or not? Not all newfangled devices are actually very useful. At first glance, this device may make life easier for a novice cyclist and will be completely unnecessary for a seasoned cyclist. In any case, do not leave the chain without proper care.
There are several types of bike chain cleaning machines. They differ in configuration, price and durability. The most affordable models from Bike, Barbieri, Hand and Birzman are machines with three cleaning wheels and a convenient reservoir. A more expensive machine from Kettenmax has all the necessary additional components in its arsenal. In fact, the final choice will depend on your financial capabilities. The key advantage of the machine is the ability to maintain the chain without removing the part from the bike.
To start the procedure, you need to place the chain directly into the machine. The container is filled in advance to the middle of the rollers with flushing solution (the norm is 50 ml). After that, smooth pedaling is ensured. Hold the clipper and the bike at the same time. For the procedure in a living room, it is better to protect the floor with pieces of cloth or cover with paper. The cleaned chain must dry and only then can the lubricant be applied.
Optimal lubrication intervals There are no clearly defined guidelines. it all depends on the owner of the bike. It is enough to carry out the lubrication procedure a couple of times a season to extend the durability of the bike. at the beginning and at the end. After heavy extreme loads, it is advisable to wash the bike and not be too lazy to re-lubricate parts and connections. Some cyclists lubricate the chain after every hundreds of kilometers, regardless of weather conditions.
What you can not lubricate the bicycle chain Experts strongly do not recommend the use of thick lubricants. this will prevent the proper penetration of the product into all the necessary places. Another minus is the adhesion of road dust. Do not use concentrated grease and lithol, sunflower oil.
It is advisable to avoid the use of automotive gear oils, sewing machine oil-based fluids. They attract dust. after two trips, you will have to clean the dirty chain again. Also, such oils are very afraid of moisture, which cannot be avoided in rainy weather.
Bottom Line Remember that the market today is full of bike cleaning fluids. This is all well and good, but car shampoo and hot water will have a similar effect. Hot water is the key to removing dirt, and all cleaning fluids simply speed up the process and save time.
If you love your bike, polish it with a soft cloth and paint polish. As a result, it will look shiny and become more resistant to dirt sticking.
Bicycle care: 6 basic rules for washing, lubricating, storing your bike
Regular and proper care of any type of bike is a 100% guarantee of an increase in its useful life and an increase in the level of safety while riding. In addition to the neat appearance, do not forget about the brakes, shock absorbers, chains and other elements of this transport. Each stage of great care has its own nuances. Which ones? Read more about this in the article.
A nuance: most electric vehicles do not require as much care as a bicycle. It is enough to keep the device clean and recharge it on time.
How to care for shock absorbers?
In order for the bike to continue to ride successfully without any complaints from the rider, it is worth figuring out how to maintain the bike fork.
There are 2 types of service:
Intermediate. care for a pair of friction: legs and pants. They are protected by a rubber boot, but not 100% protected from dirt and water. Therefore, first of all, during intermediate maintenance, you need to remove the pants by unscrewing 2 bolts from the bottom of the fork, and clean them from the inside, then put new grease and reinstall them.
Complete. includes replacement of oil and seals in the damper. This is more complicated and requires a repair kit, bike tools and fork knowledge. If all this is not there, it is better to contact the workshop.
How to properly lubricate a bicycle fork? The process takes place in several stages: removing the plug from the mount; parsing it into its components; applying lubricant to active parts of the system; collecting and installing the plug back.
Another common question: what kind of oil should you put in your bike fork? Fork lubricants can be grease or liquid. Which one is right for a particular product? Better to focus on the manufacturer’s opinion. Experimenting with gear and machine oils can negatively affect the condition of the fork.
Prevention of gear shifting systems
The switches must function flawlessly so that the climbs and descents on the bike go smoothly. The bicycle rear derailleur is lubricated as follows:
unscrew and disassemble the rear derailleur;
wipe and lubricate it (it is advisable to also lubricate the spring and washer);
The function of the switches also depends on the condition of the cables. Lubrication of the cables of any type of bicycle is carried out only from the inside of the shirts. If you do this outside, then dust will stick to them. To clean and lubricate the cables, you will need to unscrew them, loosen them and pull the shirts out of the slots on the frame. After the end of the procedure, return everything to its place.
The cables that run through the bike are responsible for the correct function of the speed switch. The correct operation of the switches depends on how tight / loose the cable is. During operation, the cables can stretch, which negatively affects the functioning of the switches. Accordingly, it is necessary to tighten or loosen the adjusting screw. The procedure is repeated until the correct operation of the switch is achieved.
A common question is: why do bike brakes squeak? There are several reasons depending on their type:
V-brake. if the pads are made of hard rubber, then the unpleasant squeak from them is quite strong. The wheel rim squeaks if it is very dirty or worn out and needs to be replaced. In addition, the pads must be strictly parallel to the rim, without skewing, otherwise annoying creaking cannot be avoided.
Disc. Rear and front disc brakes must be kept clean. The material from which the rotor is constructed is also important: the softer the steel, the quieter the brakes will be.
How can you lubricate disc brakes on a bicycle? The answer is nothing, otherwise they will not fulfill their purpose.
To eliminate the creaking of the brakes, you need:
regularly clean the rim. wipe it with thinner or gasoline to remove the rubber from the worn pads, which has adhered to the rim and increases the friction force;
How to wash your bike?
In dry weather, such a need rarely arises, but after riding in mud and slush, the bike will definitely need to be cleaned. Can the bike be washed? If you do not pour water on it with buckets, then, of course, yes. Ideally, the washing process is best done outdoors or in a garage.
How can you wash your bike and what you need for this:
detergent (can be standard, for washing dishes).
How to clean, lube and care for your bike
If there is a lock on the bike chain, it is better to remove it and clean it separately so that dirt does not get into the rollers. It is worth starting washing from the lower pipe, since it is there that the largest layer of dirt is located. Then you need to walk over the rest of the frame. In places with difficult access (for example, a carriage assembly), you can wield an old toothbrush. Wheels can be removed and washed separately. During washing, it is worth avoiding vulnerable places of the led, for example, bearings, forks. Finally, wipe the bike dry with a dry cloth.
Bicycle chain maintenance
Cycle chain links constantly rubbing against each other need regular lubrication. But before doing this, you need to know how to properly clean, wash and generally care for the bike chain (for example, from the Discovery brand).
So, how to wash the chain of a two-wheeled friend. a bicycle:
Washing the bike chain in solvent. This method is best suited for chains with detachable links. chain locks. It is necessary to remove the bike chain from the transport and place it in a plastic bottle, after filling it with solvent. It remains only to thoroughly shake this cocktail, then remove the chain and rinse it under running water.
For him, you will need to purchase a special machine. a clinging machine. Their main plus is that the chain does not need to be dismantled for cleaning. The principle of operation of various models of machines is almost identical and boils down to the fact that you need to pour the cleaning agent into a special container, tuck the chain into the guide rollers, close the lid and turn the cycle completely several times until it is completely cleaned. At the end, all that remains is to drain the cleaning agent.
After getting it in shape, it’s time to lubricate the bike chain.
There are 3 ways to lubricate your bike chain:
To drip the links with a special tool, each separately (for this you need an oiler).
Apply an aerosol spray (you need to additionally purchase a can with it).
Dismantle the bike chain and boil it in a thick lubricant.
It is best to lubricate every 50-100 km of cycling or if you hear a specific rustling sound while riding.
For lubrication, you can use:
have convenient packaging, can be used with any model of bicycles, excess grease can be easily removed with a cloth
sold in bottles with a special spout that helps to conveniently apply lubricant, you can use an ordinary syringe to apply them
durable, resistant to temperature extremes, protect against corrosion
convenient and economical to use, repel dust and moisture
withstand high pressure, have good penetrating ability, contain antistatic agent
After all the links of the bike chain have been processed, it is worth eliminating the excess lubricant with a rag, otherwise dust will stick to the lubricated places.
How and where to store your bike?
A haven for your iron horse should be chosen carefully, for its own safety, integrity and preservation of operational qualities.
How to store a bike at home. 2 types:
Assembled. it is better to hang the led on the wall so that the wheels do not come into contact with the floor. If during such storage the pressure in the tires drops, then the wheels will not deform. It is better not to leave the bike bike in rooms without heating, since the rubber can crack.
Disassembled. the wheels and saddle must be removed from the bike. All this is packed in fabric or plastic bags to protect it from dust, and can also be hung on the wall. The saddle should also be kept warm to prevent deformation of the saddle cover.
How to store a bike in the stairwell? This place can only be chosen as a short-term shelter for the led, since even if the transport is equipped with a lock, there is a high probability of its theft by intruders. There is a lot of traffic in the entrances, so you should choose more secluded places for storage: a glazed balcony, a garage, a storage room.
Tip: if you want fewer storage problems, you should think about purchasing a compact electric unicycle, gyroboard or even an electric scooter. the latter folds elegantly, so that it can even be stored in a closet. And the newfangled electric rollers can be thrown onto the shoe rack.
And the last question. how to store your bike in winter? First you need to thoroughly wash it, clean and lubricate the chassis, chain, bushing. The led is sent for wintering only after it is completely dry and the grease is absorbed.
So, bike care is necessary and important. Without timely cleaning and lubrication of the chain, shock absorbers and other things, the bike can fail at the most crucial moment. Most of their described procedures are within the power of everyone, the exception is that if you need to disassemble the parts is large, you cannot do without the help of the masters. Cycling bikes do not like dirt and severe frosts, so the rider’s task is to organize suitable storage conditions for the bike, so that at the beginning of the season there is no need to repair the two-wheeled vehicle.
Remember not to lubricate a dirty bike. Before you lubricate it, you need to clean it well, leave it to dry for several hours in a dry place, and only then, when all the nodes are dry, proceed to the next stage of care. Lubricating a bike can take hours. At the same time, avoid products that contain lithol due to the harmful effects of lithium (which is an alkali metal) on aluminum.
To lubricate the undercarriage of the bike that needs it the most, you can use the following remedies:
- thick graphite grease;
- liquid lubricant (mineral or transmission oil);
- two-component lubricant in a can (Teflon or silicone).
None of these products can be called ideal for lubricating a vehicle, each of them has both positive and negative sides. The difficult method, in fact, turns out to be the most durable and is not immediately erased from rubbing parts. An easier way of lubrication is less durable and reliable. Having tested each of them, experienced cyclists choose the optimal one for themselves, which they then resort to regularly.
Many bicycle owners have come to love this two-component Teflon spray lubricant. AB-80 is a mixture of a volatile solvent and Teflon that minimizes friction during evaporation of this solvent. By lubricating your iron friend in this way, you save your time (the process itself is pretty fast) and put a minimum of effort (the method is very simple). Already 15 minutes after you spray the bike chain from an aerosol can, the bike is ready for use, and dirt practically does not stick to it. But, as we said above, each method has its drawbacks. And fragility is the main disadvantage of this method of bicycle lubrication. You can enjoy a lubricated bike for no more than 40 kilometers. Having passed this distance, you will hear a characteristic, unpleasant for the hearing of a cyclist, murmuring grinding.
The next type of oil we will look at is gear oil. One of the advantages of this thick oil is its reasonable price. The oil is poured into the links using a special watering can. an oiler. In order for the oil to get into each link, after it has been poured, the chain must be rotated and switched in all directions. It will begin to bend and all links will fill with transmission oil. To save oil consumption, the bike should be left for 8-10 hours after such treatment (ideally, lubricate overnight). Wipe down the sprockets and the chain with a cloth before using the lubricated bike. Don’t worry about wiping off the oil. it will remain in the chain itself, although it will be dry on the outside. Another advantage of this lubricant is its durability. Lubrication with transmission oil will be enough for you for a distance of 70 to 100 kilometers. Provided, of course, that you use the bike in dry weather and on normal roads. Remember that if you lubricate the uncleaned chain with transmission oil, you will hear a characteristic unpleasant rustling after the first 20 kilometers of driving.
Dirt is one of the enemies of the bike. This is worth remembering when purchasing any mechanical tool. And if you want to be a joyful owner of a bicycle that will serve you for a long time with faith and truth, take the trouble to cleanse your iron friend of dirt after each ride, regardless of distance. A prerequisite is a perfectly clean undercarriage: bike chain and sprockets. Cleaning the bike frame, of course, is not so important, but it will not be superfluous.
You are in luck if you are the proud owner of a Karcher sink. It will keep your steel friend perfectly clean. Residents of apartment buildings living on any floor above the first floor will most likely have to wash their bicycles without leaving the apartment. It is easy to adapt the bathroom for this purpose. In the bathroom, disassemble the bike by removing the pedals, and turning it upside down, place it in the bathroom sink on the seat. At the same time, the grips stand on the edges. Remember that large lumps of dirt, earth, and grass can clog the bathroom drain. Therefore, first clean the bike of such coarse dirt. This can be done with a regular rag. A powerful stream of water and a plastic brush will quickly and efficiently remove dirt. In case the bike is very dirty, a good dishwashing detergent will help you. But, generously pouring water onto the vehicle, make sure that water does not get into the grooves of the steering part and the carriage. Remember that extreme temperature changes are harmful to your bike. Therefore, after walking in the cold season, leave it to warm up a little at room temperature, and only after a while, when the bike heats up, start cleaning it. Cool water is good for washing your bike after such a walk. Pay particular attention to washing the wheels. Avoid getting water in the grommets.
Steering and bushing care
If you do not have enough experience in riding a bicycle, you should not take the risk and dig into the hubs yourself. Do not hesitate to seek advice or even help from more experienced cyclists before lubricating and bulkheading. Grease works best for the bushings. It is also perfect for lubricating steering columns. By lubricating the eccentric axles with a thin layer of oil, you will protect them from rust, from which it often suffers.
Maintenance of cables, shirts
Some cyclists believe that cables, if they are of good quality, made of Teflon, do not need to be lubricated at all, but only buy new ones every season. experienced cyclists or professionals use Pedros SynGrease grease. A thin layer of it is applied with your fingers to the cables when they are installed. The part of the cable that is not hidden under the jacket is wiped dry to remove grease residues.
Fork and caring for it
The inside of the plug is inviolable, so you should never climb there. But the space under the anthers needs regular cleaning. Therefore, remember to clean it at monthly intervals, such as spraying with the Teflon spray lubricant discussed above. After that, squeeze the plug well and leave it for 8-10 hours. After a while, wipe the plug dry with a cloth and put on the anthers.
Maintenance of brakes, rear and front derailleurs
These components do not need to be cleaned frequently. Because of the mud, neither the brakes nor the switches are likely to let you down. It is enough to lubricate them with a small amount of gear oil (one drop is enough) every 2-3 months in those places where the parts rub against each other. After 1-2 hours, wipe these parts dry with a cloth and use the bike. When caring for the brakes, lubricate only the bushings (the vibrake drives rotate relative to them). But the rollers of the rear derailleur need to be lubricated quite often, because, quickly becoming dirty, they begin to whistle unpleasantly.
Bicycle care or cleaning, washing and lubricating the bicycle
When buying a new vehicle, most inexperienced owners are interested in caring for it. And this is true. After spending a certain amount from our budget, we want the purchase to serve us as long as possible, and so that the further operation of the bike does not introduce even greater costs.
Among cyclists, both in live communication and in online communities, there is a basic principle of vehicle care, based on two components: washing and lubricating. Most people think that a bicycle chain just needs to be boiled and lubricated on a regular basis. Although, in fairness, it should be said that not everyone agrees with such methods of bicycle care. After all, there is an alternative to these methods of leaving. We will dwell on this in more detail.
Chassis and care
This is the part of the bike that tends to get the most and most dirty. The chain, cassette, system is rather difficult to clean. this is where road dirt and bike grease are mixed. But using a chain cleaner with a little hot water and dish detergent (many cyclists use Fairy for this) can solve this problem by using a chain cleaner with some hot water and dish detergent to clean it. The same Fairy and a plastic brush will come to the rescue when cleaning bike stars.
