Some experiment with other liquids, such as vegetable oil, soapy water, or alcohol. An important point: if you immediately put on new grips after that, you will have to wait a little until the water / oil / alcohol wears out and the handles do not turn. Depending on the type of liquid used, as well as the material of the pen, the period can be from 15 minutes (in the case of alcohol) to a day (if oil was used).

If the handle “sits” too tightly on the handlebars, you can pierce it with a syringe needle in several places and pour water. Rubber, non-rigid grips can be heated in hot water and can be removed easily. For the same purposes, it is convenient to use a hairdryer or an electric kettle with boiling water.

How to change the handlebar grips

Sooner or later, every cyclist faces the question of how to change the grips on the bicycle handlebars. For example, the “default” ones turned out to be inconvenient, worn out, or simply liked more beautiful and functional ones. And the first attempt to pull off the handles using the strength of your own hands and the simple push-and-pull method, as a rule, fails. Only in this case you need to lubricate the steering wheel itself. If there is no set of clamps at hand, and the water-alcohol method did not help, there is another way out of the situation. They can be successfully replaced by a small piece of sling (you can cut it off from the handle of an unnecessary backpack). Slide the fabric into the grip so that there is a long enough “ponytail” from the edge for you to grip comfortably with your fingers. Slide the handle onto the handlebar and then pull out the sling. A quick way, which is good when you need to put on the handles and go straight away: sprinkle hairspray on the inner surface of the grip. It glides well and instantly locks the handle.

It happens that it is not important for the cyclist how to change the grips on the bicycle handlebars, but simply to fix the handles if they begin to scroll, even if the pipe is not dirty. How to wear handlebar grips effortlessly

Put on the handlebars in the same way as they are removed. The technique, in principle, is to wet the grip by making it wet in this way. Can be moistened with water. The handle can then be put on easily and without problems. But there is one BUT. In this case, it will dry for a day, if you do not wait for it to dry, then it can scroll or even slide off while driving.

Therefore, it is better to choose the second method. The second method is to use alcohol instead of water for wetting. You can use a regular deodorant for this, for example. Everything happens as in the first case (with water) without problems, only the alcohol dries very quickly and you don’t have to wait a whole day for the handles to dry.

Another method. If you have very tight grips, and there are some. What are we doing? Bring water in a saucepan to a boil, throw in your bicycle handles for a couple of minutes, take them out and.   • We fix the bicycle brake cables with strapping tape. This is done so that the cables do not interfere with us when winding the tape around the steering wheel;
  • The left and right handlebars are wrapped with tape clockwise and counterclockwise respectively;
  • There is a small piece of tape in the tape set, which is used to slide it under the brake lever cap. Usually the tape is wide enough that this short length of tape is considered justified. If the tape is narrow, then quite often cyclists pass the section of the brake levers in an eight. throwing the tape alternately in the shape of an eight, wrapping the brake levers in this way. If you have a wide tape, then in this case, an uncomfortable build-up of an extra tape (bulge) may form, which you absolutely do not need. In short, use the very short section of the tape for this;
  • Further. The tape on the other side has a self-adhesive surface. we make a couple of turns of the tape at the very edge of the steering wheel in order to initially fix the tape, and then we begin to wind the tape around the steering wheel tightly and firmly. We also go around the area with the brake lever carefully and slowly, covering our already applied piece of tape with a new layer of tape. We reach the point where the tape breaks and carefully cut it off with scissors;
  • Now it remains only to wind the electrical tape on the cut off area. We lay down the electrical tape in several layers and cut it off. We go through steps 3-5 with the opposite handle of the bike, winding the tape in the opposite direction.

I would also like to say in pursuit that sometimes some tapes have so-called caps. They are convenient in that they form a single whole with the tape. We put on the cap and start winding the tape. By the way, there are also special soft long grips for road bikes. Which one to think for you, but more often they still use winding tape in such cases. It is convenient to put on such grips with an atmospheric air supply apparatus. But these are usually used only in specialized workshops, so it is better to use the above methods of putting on the grips on the steering wheel.

  • The main winding on one side of the tape is impregnated with a self-adhesive impregnation for fixing: with the adhesive side, make several circles at the edge of the steering wheel, then continue winding the tape tightly pressing it to the bar;
  • Thus, wrap the entire handlebar including the section with the brake lever;
  • After wrapping, cut off excess with a knife.

Long soft attachments are available for road bikes, but before choosing grips, you should clarify the installation method: mainly installation of grips on a road bike is done in bike shops.

Therefore, if you are planning an independent replacement of the handles, it is better to use a winding tape.

Removing old grips from a bike

After some time of operation, especially if at least a couple of years have passed, the grips are not so easy to remove from the steering wheel. They seem to “stick” to the metal surface. She must sit firmly on the steering wheel and not scroll.

Sometimes it comes to the point that you just have to cut them off with a hacksaw or file.

It is best to twist it with rotational movements around the steering wheel axis and at the same time pull to the edge.

What to do if the handles turn?

If the handles scroll or do not sit tightly, dirt or water has gotten under them, they must be removed, the surface of the rod must be dried, the diameter of the parts must be checked to within a millimeter, and only then reinstalled on the steering wheel.
