ANT Bike Speed ​​/ Cadence Sensor: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know

After the popular “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know” post I wrote on the pedals this winter, I decided it was time to continue with the speed / cadence sensor. Fortunately, the speed / cadence sensor is actually a little less cryptic than the pedal, primarily because it is a very simple device from a mathematical point of view (as opposed to the pedal, which calculates distance based on a number of calibrated factors).

Well, there are actually three different types of ANT sensors. related to this area, which correspond to three different official ANT sensor profiles for speed and cadence sensors. You:

Each of these different devices uses different types of ANT profiles. This means that just because a device supports one type of profile does not mean that it will support other types. The combination sensor was the oldest and most widely supported. I don’t know of any ANT devices. which doesn’t support it. Meanwhile, only speed and cadence sensors are newer and much less supported. For example, Garmin FR305 does not support these new ANT profiles.

What do I mean by ANT profiles / device types? Well, every ANT device has a profile, think of it as “classification”. There are ANT Heart Rate Straps (HRM device profile), power meters (PWR Meter device profile) and others. There are even new profiles for data streams such as skin temperature and electric bicycles (LEVs). Each of them. it is just a standard identifying a device, because without ANT standards, the ecosystem will not work too well.

Speed ​​/ cadence sensors:

For most people, the most common speed / cadence sensor is the 35 Garmin GSC-10, no doubt the Microsoft Office of the ANT world almost everyone has. These are just three parts. But there are others who have created combined speed / cadence sensors, most of which have slightly different designs. Speed ​​Only and Cadence Only Sensors:

Next, we have those devices that are speed sensors or cadence sensors. but not both. These sensors are designed to transmit data about speed or cadence. They cannot do both, and can only measure what they are designed for (that is, you cannot use a speed sensor to measure cadence). The most common reason people use these sensors rather than the combination ones is because their bike has a specific configuration that the combination sensor does not fit. In particular, they are more popular with unique bicycles such as recumbent and tandem bikes.

Bontrager also manufactures a speed sensor that also mounts directly to the fork, similar to the frame-mounted sensors mentioned in the next section below.

Bontrager also makes a cadence sensor, although they tend to be more difficult to find simply because there is so little demand for them.

In both of these situations, these single function sensors require the ANT head unit to support single function profiles.

Newer bike computers like the Edge 500 and Edge 800 don’t, but many older computers don’t, so be aware of this.

The latest category of speed / cadence sensors. These are sensors built into the frame. Technically from ANT’s point of view, it is just a combined speed / cadence sensor. And today only one company makes them. Bontrager. as part of their Duotrap line. And besides, they are supported by only one bicycle frame manufacturer today. Trek.

Finally, it should be noted that most cycling powered power meters will include information such as speed, cadence, or both.

The type of data these power meters collect will vary depending on how a particular power meter measures its power data. This in turn determines whether speed or cadence data is detected. and if so. whether they are measured or calculated (estimated).

Take, for example, crank power meters (such as the Quarq and SRM).

These power meters use magnets to detect cadence. they simply measure every turn of your grip (what your foot ultimately connects to). Here is an example of a Quarq power meter with a magnet visible at the bottom attached to a small metal ring next to the bottom bracket (taken from the top of the crank rings and chains):

Then you have other crank power meters such as the Power2Max, which doesn’t actually use magnets at all, but uses mathematical equations to determine your cadence based on other known variables. In this case, these calculations usually specify a specific cadence range. to which they are accurate. For example, Power2Max is specified from 30 to 180 rpm.

And finally, you have hub-based power meters like PowerTap that can measure both speed and cadence. In the case of speed, he can measure this directly, since he knows the rpm based on the rotation of the hub. But for the cadence, he actually calculates it mathematically. Overall this is pretty accurate, although like the Power2Max it knows ranges or extreme scenarios where it doesn’t perform as well (really high cadence), but more than enough for typical day-to-day use.

In most head unit (i.e. display) configurations, cadence information from a power meter always takes precedence over cadence information from a separate stand-alone sensor.

Why you need cadence or speed data anyway?

Well, it depends on the circumstances. Let’s start with a cadence. There has actually been quite a bit of research done on both sides of the cadence coin. One side says that a higher cadence, such as 90-95 rpm, is ideal, while the other claims that a “self-selected” cadence is most effective. Many people do exercises at a high cadence. to be able to rotate at higher rpms if necessary. not taking such big beats on heart rate, just to twist the cranks faster if necessary (i.e. sprint to the finish line).

As you can see, speed and cadence sensors are fairly common but are also an essential part of many cyclists. The good news is they are pretty cheap: most ANT devices cost around 35, which is well within the budget of most people.

We’ve all been into this: you walk into your first indoor cycling lesson and it immediately scares you. Subdued lights, loud music, and a lot of queers who seem to know for sure. what to do. Saddle height should be at hip level.

Shoes with a stiffer sole (think running shoes instead of flexible, cushioned shoes) will help prevent this.

Since the system is constantly exposed to the environment with severe mechanical stress, torsional problems can arise. In this case, two methods are used:

  • Soaking the bike pedal in kerosene or solvent to remove as much dirt as possible that is blocking rotation.
  • Heating of the connecting rod and axle. Slight deformation helps loosen the threads and remove the axle.

It is also important to carefully tighten the axle during installation so as not to damage the threads, which is a considerable problem in case of subsequent removal.

Removing the pedals from the bike is easy enough, but don’t forget about preparing tools and materials, as well as possible problems. The main thing is to keep the entire system in order, since in case of damage or other problems, the inconvenience of using the bike will be very great.

How to remove pedals from a bike

The pedals should be removed when:

  • The bike must be packed in a cover;
  • The pedal creaks, crunches and therefore needs to be cleaned;
  • The pedals do not squeak yet, but you carry out regular maintenance (if everything is in order, then it is enough to clean, lubricate and adjust the pedals once a year or two);
  • You change the pedal to a new one;
  • There is a need to set up a new pedal.

To do this, you need a special pedal wrench (it can be replaced by a 15 mm open-end wrench or a 6 or 8 mm socket wrench), rags and grease.

How to remove pedals from a bike

Put the bike on wheels (using a special stand that keeps the bike suspended, specifically for this case, is not the best option, because when unscrewing the pedals, you have to apply a very large force, which can be extinguished by the stand structure).

Please note that the threads on the left and right pedals are different! This is to prevent the left pedal from spinning out spontaneously when cycling. Thus, you unscrew the right pedal (on the side where the stars are) as usual, counterclockwise; however, to loosen the left pedal, you need to turn the key clockwise. This is very important to remember so as not to tighten the left pedal even more.!

If you need to remove both pedals, start with the right. Place the connecting rod parallel to the ground, pointing it forward. So it will be more convenient for you to unscrew the nut, pressing your weight on the key; you are also less likely to hit the frame stays in the rear wheel area. Be careful not to injure your fingers on the chainrings! After you loosen the pedal, unscrew it completely, while making sure that the washers, which may be there, do not roll anywhere.

To unscrew the left pedal, orient the crank in the same way. We remind you again: here you need to unscrew it clockwise!

After you have removed the pedal, first of all, so as not to forget, wipe the threads in the connecting rods. remove any remaining grease and dirt.

How to disassemble, adjust and assemble the pedal

Now proceed to disassemble the pedal itself. While holding the axle from the end that was screwed into the connecting rod, loosen the nut at its other end with a hexagon or another wrench. If you do not see a nut or a groove for a hexagon on the second side of the axis, look, perhaps there is an overlay. pry it with a knife and remove it. After unscrewing all nuts, remove the axle and all bearings.

Wash all parts in gasoline or kerosene, wipe dry. After that, you can start assembling.

Grease the bearings and lay them down with the balls towards the inside of the pedal. Now. put on the axle, screw on the cone and locknut (if there were washers, then also place them where they were).

Before you screw the pedal to the bike, you need to adjust it. Take it by the axle and twist it. The pedal should rotate as easily as possible, while there should be no backlash. well, perhaps only the very minimum. Adjustment is carried out as follows: by unscrewing or tightening the lock nut, ensure that the pedal rotates with sufficient ease. As soon as you get a satisfying effect, you can screw the pedals to the cranks (apply some lubricant to the threads).

At the same time, remember that you need to tighten them in the opposite direction to unscrewing: the right, as usual, clockwise, and the left. counterclockwise. Start spinning the pedals with your hands first in order to fit them as correctly as possible without breaking the thread.
