It is a group of several stars that are inextricably linked. In this case, you will have to replace the entire spider. Many cyclists are faced with the following problem. After replacing several stars, there is great discomfort in the operation of the chain. This is due to the fact that the chain has already passed a certain mileage, has worn out and now it is difficult for it to interact with new parts. Therefore, experts recommend the simultaneous replacement of the chain and worn sprockets. This greatly minimizes the complexity of your bike’s drivetrain.

If you own a single speed bike, the process of replacing the rear chainring will be simplified to a minimum. You just need to open the retaining ring. If your own ring has become unusable, it must be replaced immediately, even if you are not going to replace the stars in the near future. Otherwise, the chain will lose its fixation, and this threatens with backlash. The process of replacing the ring is very simple, you do not need to perform the slightest forceful manipulations. Therefore, if you are talking about a single-speed bike, everything is very easy and understandable here. However, the owners of such models should carry out the process of dismantling the cassette only if one or more of the largest stars have worn out. If a small asterisk begins to fail, this is not a cause for concern. Whatever you ride, remember that both the simplest road bike and the super-fast bike need a proper transmission. A badly worn chain and stars will not allow you to drive even a couple of meters. Pay close attention to the mechanics and promptly replace worn-out parts. Number of stars

The cassettes are selected according to the number of stars. Older bike cassettes mostly have seven stars, nowadays 8/10/11 and even 12 star cassettes are installed on road and mountain bikes.

You can determine the number of stars by marking, for example, 11-36 T, 10 speed indicates the number of teeth (1 small, 36 large) and 10 stars.

Removing and installing a star on cassettes

Unlike ratchets, in this system the stars can be changed individually. All that is needed is to remove the old part and put a new one in its place. Special rivets and small spacers are located between the stars, which allow them to hold a fixed position and facilitate the installation of the cassette itself. It is very easy to screw the desired star from the device, the main thing is not to get confused in the sequence, especially on large cassettes of high-speed mountain bikes.

Sometimes “spiders” can be found on cassettes. rigidly fixed areas of several stars. Here you will have to replace the entire set, on which one of the stars is badly worn out. True, this only applies to large transmission rear wheel sprockets.

When replacing a single chainring, you may encounter the problem of the difficulty of switching the chain to it. This is due to the fact that the chain already has wear compared to the new sprocket. And if this is not so noticeable with one detail, then several new stars will immediately bring a tangible dissonance to the operation of the transmission. That is why it is advisable to change the cassette at the same time as the chain.
