How to attach a basket to a bike. How to independently install the front bike basket on the front handlebars and fork of a mountain bike if you have front shock absorbers. Mounting the basket in front of the bike with visual diagrams, photos and videos. Korzina
Types of bike basket designs
A bike ride can be extreme, a bike ride through historic sites, or a city trip. The basket in front of a mountain bike, as an accessory, will become indispensable on any trip. This design has two mounts: cantilever or rigid.
When choosing a shopping cart, it is worth considering a few points:
- Rim or disc brake system.
- Number of holes for fixing the structure.
- Estimated load on the basket.
- Strength and lightness of the installed device.
- Fastening reliability.
- One-piece or collapsible.
- Protecting the entry of the bike basket into the wheel spokes.
Suitable for transporting small items. Console basket version (quick-detachable). not suitable for transporting heavy loads (possible breakdown). This is due to the lack of solid fastening in one place (frame). The advantage of this basket rack is easy installation.
When choosing a basket in front of a mountain bike, you need to focus on personal preference. Going on a trip, you should make sure that the structure is securely fastened. Such systems are fastened with bolts. It is important to choose the right luggage system for the basket itself, capable of withstanding the load that will not harm the bike. For those who are financially independent, you can experiment and achieve goals based on your own mistakes, comparing options. There is an option to get advice from experienced cyclists or qualified specialists.
Possibility to install the bike basket on different types of bicycles
The mechanism is more rigid. Option III. Lack of connection points. This incident can be solved as follows: fasten to the upper stays from below and to a convenient point from above with clamps. The design is unreliable. Can be used for short trips. to the chainstays and chainstays (a convenient place) we fasten with clamps. reliable system. Two-suspension. it is difficult to install a rack-box, which will be rigidly attached. The console type is more suitable here.
You can also use a rack with a stays on the rear suspension. This design is unreliable when traveling in mountainous areas. Mounting the basket on a mountain bike is the ideal solution, it is to make your own bracket. For reliability, fasten with clamps to the frame. There are three types of bicycles by frame type: double suspension (mountain bikes, sports); hardtail (several mountain, tourist, hybrid); rigid (most tourist, road). For the last 2 types, classic baskets are suitable.
Material of manufacture Several materials are used for the manufacture of cycling baskets. Features of installing the front rack basket with your own hands Not always on bicycles there are holes for attaching the rack. Sometimes it is not enough for a reliable installation of the system. There are several recommendations for seasoned cyclists: Under-file the disc brake caliper. The luggage rack struts must not touch any parts of the brake system. Use brackets. Use the clamps with a rubber pad to avoid damaging the frame.
Tips for buying a bike basket
It is much more convenient if the rack is fixed on the bike. A few tips: Lightweight yet durable. Wide, long roof rack. Suitable for the width of the bike bag. The front and back platforms are raised (prevents the backpack from moving). Clamp for load.
Adjustable rack height. Some manufacturers produce bike carriers with hooks or load holders. Overview of manufacturers and models There are more and more enthusiasts to use a two-wheeled vehicle. Manufacturers are worried not only about the production of bicycles, but also the necessary accessories. Quite a well-known brand Tranz X, inherent in the JD Components corporation from Taiwan. Introduces the classic basket rack with 3 straight struts. Universal luggage system, can be installed on several models of bicycles. The kit includes clamps and brackets. There is a bracket for clamping the load.
Cycling accessory designers have come up with many different baskets for a wide variety of bike models. And it’s not just about design. In addition to their appearance, these bike accessories differ from one another in:
- degree of load;
- type and nature of fastening.
Each cyclist or cyclist chooses a basket according to their own requirements. And they can purchase several of them, as they say, “for all occasions”.
Front and back baskets. On the steering wheel
Grabbing everything you need and traveling while pedaling is the dream of any cycling fan or aficionado. And “everything you need” fits into the basket, because there is no other way to ride a bicycle. precisely, it will work out, but it will not be so convenient. According to the general opinion of the majority of owners of two-wheeled vehicles, the basket is the best thing that was invented by the developers and designers of bicycle accessories for fans of cycling.
On the trunk
The trunk basket is chosen depending on the location of the trunk. The rear bicycle baskets are more spacious, they can hold up to 10, 20, or even 40 kg of cargo (for different bicycle models. differently). But the rack baskets above the front wheels are more compact and less spacious (but still they can be folded much more than those that are attached to the steering wheel).
Baskets installed on bicycle racks are often used to transport pets. often dogs than cats, because the former are much easier to tolerate any road and practically do not need constant control of the owner during movement. However, special luggage baskets have been developed for small animals, which have not only a fixing cover, but also a soft bedding with sides.
Bicycle baskets are not very roomy. Materials for making bicycle baskets
Bicycle baskets are made from different materials depending on the purpose. This could be:
- Aluminium alloy;
- and even titanium.
Wicker baskets made of vine decorated with textiles are very effective. These are the ones most often chosen by the fair sex for their bicycles. The most popular ones, combining lightness, strength and optimal price, are bicycle baskets of various designs made of ultra-strong and ultra-modern aluminum alloys.
Bicycle basket construction
Any modern bicycle basket, regardless of design or material, is a lightweight and durable construction that resists drops or bumps. She is also not afraid of unfavorable climatic conditions. Bicycle baskets can withstand torrential rains and the scorching sun with equal ease. True, it is better to protect products with a textile finish from constant exposure to sunlight (so as not to fade), and after a trip in the rain, it is worth wiping both the bike and bicycle accessories with a soft dry flannel cloth.
Many bicycle baskets have lids. Including “carriers” designed for comfortable transportation of pets. small dogs, cats, ferrets, etc.
Many luggage baskets have special hooks that make it easy (but secure) to fix and just as easily remove these accessories from the bike.
Structurally, bicycle baskets designed for mounting on the handlebars are made especially durable, since in a possible collision with moving or immovable objects they take on a rather large shock load.
Bicycle baskets can be attached to a two-wheeled vehicle not only in different places, but also in different ways. that is, using different fasteners:
- Universal steering. This one is easy to remove, weighs little, has a low selling price and, most importantly, reliably holds the basket.
- On a bracket with a support. Attaches to the hub axle on bicycles with 28 ” wheels.
- Quick-detachable plastic (in various configurations) on the steering wheel.
- Steering collar, etc.
Video review of bicycle baskets with a universal plastic mount on the handlebars: Bicycle Basket Manufacturers
Many well-known global brands that manufacture bicycles of various models also produce their own lines of accessories for these vehicles. Including. and a variety of bicycle baskets.
However, there are also firms that make only “mounted” elements for two-wheeled “iron horses”. Among the most famous companies working in this area are the Italian “Elite”, the American “Easton” and “Lizard Skins”, the French “Look”, the German “XLC” and “SKS”, as well as the Japanese “Mizumi”.

There are many attractive bike baskets on the market. However, if you love the DIY slogan, then this project is for you. It is easy, affordable and exclusive to do this, because no one will have such a basket.!
In order to get started, you will need the following materials:
Basket; 2 leather belts for clothes; Nylon or wire cable ties; Polyurethane glue; Scissors; Punch for leather or drill; Special pencil or marker;
Wooden stand for work;
Once you’ve selected your basket, roughly secure it in place with wire. Position your basket so the top edge is just above the handlebar tube where the straps are attached. Stretch the wire and fasten evenly between the center point of the handlebar.
Take a marker and mark a line at the bottom of the tie. This will be the cut line and the area through which the belt will be pulled.
Before cutting, position the belt loosely along the cutting line marked with a marker. Make sure the strap fits properly without pulling or loosening.
Take some sharp scissors and cut holes in the side of the basket. Cut neatly through the basket weaving.
Use polyurethane adhesive at the cut. This will keep the cut and breakage of the vine on the basket weaving.
After the glue is dry, pull the strap through the holes in the basket.
Repeat these steps with the second belt.
If you are using a woven strap, you don’t have to worry about punching extra holes, just pull the strap too tight to avoid ruining the basket’s woven structure and secure it. Do not cut off excess belt.
If you have a leather or vinyl belt, holes are essential. You can make a new hole in the belt with a hole punch or drill. To do this, do not remove the belt from the handlebar, carefully mark the puncture site and make a hole with a diameter of 5 mm.
Thread the strap through the basket and wrap it around the handlebar grip and secure it there.
Place the free ends of the strap inside the basket.
Then thread the free ends back into the slots so that they come out on the back of the basket.
Apply a small amount of glue to the back and the inside of the belt and then cut off the excess strips of the belt so that there are small “ponytails”.
Fix the bonding points with clothespins and leave them to dry completely.
After the glue is dry, remove the clamps. Everything is ready!
If you have a woven belt, tie the ends together and glue them down a little for a strong bond.
And don’t forget to add flowers to the basket!
What are bike baskets
Mountain bikes, road bikes and, in particular, sports bikes are not designed for this accessory.
There are several types of bike basket mounts. First of all, this is the position. The bicycle basket can be mounted both in front of the handlebars and behind the seat. The installation methods are also different, below are some of them.
Permanent handlebar mount
The bracket is attached to the handlebar and is integral with the rest of the basket. Most inexpensive, but not universal mount.
Permanently attached to the frame
The basket in this design replaces the trunk using its attachment points on the frame. The most convenient and reliable fastening, but constant use of such a basket is a rare case.
Removable on the trunkMaterials. Natural materials
Indeed, on bicycles you can also find baskets made from natural twigs, for example, rattan. The woven material is environmentally friendly, very light, and, no matter how strange it sounds, it is reliable. Over time, the rods lose their properties, but up to 5 years, such a product is one of the best choices. There are only problems with mounts. It is not so easy to attach a basket and a sufficient number of rods to a small bracket element for a reliable structure.
The main block of materials for “branded” models is a metal mesh. It is lightweight, versatile and reliable enough. With proper metal processing, the mesh is not susceptible to rust, temperature extremes and does not lose its properties over time, unlike natural materials.
Metal pipes, bracket and walls made of solid plastic or plastic mesh. this is the most practical bicycle basket. For ladies’ bikes or for serious camping trips, the manufacturers have the right plastic model.
Usually plastic accessories come with replaceable parts and, unlike solid metal alternatives, they can be easily replaced part by part and repaired after damage. In addition, plastic walls allow you to install additional elements of the interior space, for example, soft inserts for dogs, which will be described below.
We’ve written about standard materials, but of course that’s not all. For example, there is a large layer of models of solid baskets, which are more logical to call “boxes”. with a stationary mount, they turn an ordinary bicycle with a basket into a cargo one, and they themselves are made of solid metal elements.
Homemade accessories also stand apart. Here you can find weaving from natural or synthetic materials, and fabric upholstery, and natural wooden boxes. there are simply no restrictions for imagination.
As a separate point I would like to talk about accessories for transporting animals. After all, if there are special armchairs for children, additional seats and even trailers, then little care for pets.
The bike basket is a rare accessory that can be very useful nonetheless. It is actively used both on walking bicycles and on village “workhorses”. It is not difficult to choose a reliable model, and many decide to make an accessory for themselves, which, due to the exceptional simplicity of the device, is quite possible.

For lovers of such transport as a bicycle, it is very convenient to have baskets that free their hands while riding and will help transport small items. The basket is most often attached to the handlebar for a bicycle, and can be made of different materials.
Bicycle basket construction
There is a wide variety of baskets for two-wheeled vehicles. The material of manufacture is different, however, they have one thing in common.
All bike baskets are strong and virtually weight-free, which translates well to bike speed while on the move. Products are pre-processed, do not erode and can be used in any weather conditions.
Some models are equipped with covers and close when driving with locks, devices can also be equipped with handles and other additional functions.
The basket is attached to the bike using a special hook or clip and is firmly attached to the handlebars, even during fast driving.
Baggage items can be made from the following materials:
- braided from natural rods. These types of devices are very rare. However, they are very durable and attractive in appearance;
- metal. made of a metal mesh, which has rigid inserts that do not allow the device to deform. They are used very often, with dents, a person can fix the problem on his own, but in case of damage to the mesh, it is very difficult to repair it. Also, without the lack of the necessary processing and maintenance, it can become rusty;
- plastic. this type is made of durable plastic and can last a long time, the models do not withstand shocks and quickly become unusable when cracked. Practically indestructible;
- textile material. these types have a rigid frame, and the walls are made of fabric. The models are not used to transport heavy objects and are damaged very quickly.
There are a large number of models, as well as the material from which they are made. Each cyclist individually approaches the choice of a device that will serve as a rack on a two-wheeled vehicle.
Fixing the basket
The basket can be mounted using the following methods:
- The device is installed using a bracket and supports on the steering axle and remains for a long time. This mount can be mounted without further regular removal of the luggage compartment.
- Temporary mount. can be removed and mounted on the handlebar.
- Plastic mount to the steering wheel. Quickly removable if necessary. Special clamps can also be used to fix the luggage box to the frame.
The type of fastening depends on the material from which the basket is made.
Tips for choosing a bike basket
When choosing a trunk, you should consider some recommendations:
The type of trunk is determined individually, depending on the purposes for which it will be used.
How to attach the basket to the steering wheel?
The basket is simply mounted, just follow these steps:
- on the side that will be placed on the steering wheel, there are special mounting holes;
- using the special plastic fasteners included in the kit, fix it on the steering wheel;
- fix the second part of the mount on the basket in the place of special holes with the bolts included in the kit;
- insert the plastic mount into the lock until you hear a click. In order to unfasten the structure, press the button marked on the mount.
If there are no fasteners, you can attach the luggage container using clamps or belts.
Bicycle Basket Manufacturers
The following well-known bicycle luggage companies stand out:
All manufacturers of bicycle equipment produce their own additional attributes, including baskets of various types. Designs can be designed for a specific type of bike or have a universal character.
I use this type of transport to go shopping in the supermarket, so using the product for transporting luggage is a good idea. I bought the transport already with a basket. Now I want to change metal to wicker.
I bought a stylish basket, which is made of vine, inside is a textile lining. It is mounted on temporary fasteners, so you can always unfasten the device and carry it by the handles. I use the product regularly for trips to the park with children. Fits everything you need plus children’s toys and does not need to carry bags and bags.
I go cycling every weekend. Using roof racks reduces stress on shoulders and arms. This type of trunk is much more convenient than bags that are mounted on the frame and interfere with pedaling.
Baskets look stylish and can free your hands from unnecessary weight.
The basket for the bicycle device is a useful accessory that will not leave anyone indifferent. The use of such a device is convenient for transporting not only purchases, but also pets.
However, it is recommended to use an additional special cage for this. Such a cage is most often attached to the top of the trunk and prevents unpleasant situations while driving.
How to make your own bike basket
Here are some tips for our DIY bike basket.
Zippers. Ties are useful to secure the basket to the handlebars and uprights. The zippers are strong, but if you want to make your basket prettier, you can grab the ribbon to tie it up.
Drill 3/16 (5 mm). You will need to punch a couple of holes in the aluminum strips, for this you will need a drill and a drill that can drill through the metal. If you do not have this home, I will explore your options in the next section.
Hacksaw for metal. What? Don’t have a hacksaw for cutting aluminum at home? You don’t need to buy it. I will cover this in the next section.
Metal files. You won’t want to leave sharp edges on your bike rack racks.
Gripping vise. Again, if you don’t have a grip at home, you have a choice.
Make your own bike rack racks
Brand. Also mark your aluminum strip with an X where you want to drill holes. This will be ½ “(1.3 cm) above the bottom of the aluminum and about ½” (1.3) cm from the top of the aluminum. Also draw a line where you want the metal to curve to create a resting place for your basket. It should be about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) from the top of the metal strip.
- Cut the aluminum where you marked with a hacksaw with a metal cutting blade. Place the aluminum strip in a vise so that it is parallel to the floor. Press down and cut through the metal with smooth movements.
- File the end of the aluminum where you just cut it until it is smooth.
- Remove the freshly cut aluminum from the vise grip and place it back into the vise grip so that it is perpendicular to the floor. The top of the clip should be aligned with the line you drew on the aluminum where you would like to bend. Place one hand on the aluminum next to the clip and the other. higher on aluminum to get some leverage. Press down until you bend the aluminum strip 90 degrees.
- Remove the aluminum strip from the vise clamp and drill holes in the top and bottom of the aluminum strip. Placing the aluminum strip in a vise so that it is flat will make it easier to drill holes.
ADVICE. If you attach the racks to your bike on an axle, use a thinner aluminum strip; the thicker your aluminum, the more weight it will carry in the basket. However, you may need to buy a longer axle.
Put it all together
- If you attach the spacers to the lugs on the bike, align the hole on the non-bent end of the aluminum strip with the bolt hole above the axle.
- Screw in the bolt with a suitable wrench until it stops.
- Hold the other end of the rack under the bike basket and make sure everything is in order before securing it with a zip tie.
- Thread the zip through the bottom of the basket and the hole in the metal strip. Close the zipper all the way.
- Do the same on the other side.
- Finally, cut off the excess zipper and cover it with a nice bow if you like!
- If you attach the struts to the axle, the process is the same except you remove the axle completely, line up the holes in the struts with the hole in the bottom of the fork, and replace the axle by passing it back in. and tightening the nuts or quick release coupling.
Dehydration and its effect on the body
From the school course on anatomy, everyone knows that the human body is about 70% water. With a lack of fluid in the body, its work is disrupted at the cellular level. Dehydration has a negative effect on the work of the joints, and since when cycling, the main load falls on the knees and back, they are the first to suffer.
The cartilage tissue at the ends of the bones protects them from direct contact with each other. It contains a large amount of water and allows cartilage to slide over each other’s surface. A decrease in the amount of intra-articular fluid during dehydration of the body makes the cartilage less slippery and causes pain.
The environment in which cartilage functions is alkaline with normal moisture content in the body. With a lack of water, it oxidizes, destroying joint tissue and increasing friction. The joints become swollen and lose their mobility. As a result, bone growths appear. Dehydration of the body leads to very sad consequences and causes osteoarthritis.
Dehydration also has an extremely negative effect on the functioning of the spine, provoking the erasure of intervertebral discs, disrupting their structure, making them brittle and fragile. This leads to the occurrence of protrusions and intervertebral hernias, causing severe pain. It is dehydration that is responsible for the onset of torcalgia and lumbodynia. Therefore, diseases of the musculoskeletal system are occupational ailments among sportsmen-cyclists.
Another danger for cycling enthusiasts is heatstroke. Even with a leisurely movement on the bike, it seems that a light breeze is blowing around you, creating a deceptive feeling of freshness. Even if the outside temperature is not too high, the risk of overheating in the sun during long cycling trips is very high.
Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, a feeling of weakness, rapid breathing and palpitations. this is not a complete list of symptoms inherent in heatstroke. In especially severe cases, loss of consciousness and even death is possible. Therefore, during a bike ride in the heat, it is very important to drink a lot of fluid, which is secreted with sweat and serves for proper thermoregulation of the body. Lack of water leads to overheating, the consequences of which can be extremely severe.
Bicycle bottle holders, their types and installation
As we have already found out, a lack of water not only causes discomfort, but can also cause serious health problems. You can use a backpack or bag to carry fluids while cycling, but if you are racing, this method is not acceptable. In addition, in the sun the backpack heats up the back a lot. Traveling as part of a group will also not allow this option, because all participants in the race will have to stop every time someone wants to quench their thirst. Therefore, it is most convenient to place the container with liquid on the bike itself.
The water supply can be stored either in a regular plastic or glass bottle, or in a special bicycle flask designed for this purpose. The second option is preferable, since such vessels have a valve that allows them to be opened with one hand. In any case, to fix the bottle, you need to install a special mount, which makes it possible to easily and quickly get water and drink.
Types of bottle cages
A bicycle water holder is one of the most needed accessories. The correct choice of this device determines the reliability of the flask fixation and the comfort when riding the bike. The sudden loss of a vessel distracts attention at the most inopportune moment. As a result, you or your friends riding behind can fall and get injured, and constant stops and searches for the lost bottle can ruin the pleasure of any bike ride.
There are many different types and designs of bicycle bottle cages. They differ from each other in location, material of manufacture and method of fastening. Most often, they are a bottle holder and fasteners that hold it. The retainer is adjustable and non-adjustable, and the holder itself can be mounted on a variety of parts of the bike.
Location of bottle cages
The most common locations for bottle cages are:
Frame. This is the most common and convenient option. Almost any modern bicycle has special threaded holes with a diameter of 5 millimeters, which are located on the bottom or seat tube of the frame and serve to attach a pump or bottle holder. Typically 64 millimeters apart, they are standard sizes and fit any type of bottle cage.
The handlebars are another common place for attaching a canteen. The fluid container is attached directly to the handlebar with clamps. In this case, you don’t even have to bend over to get the bottle and get drunk. However, it already contains many different devices: shifters for shifting gears, brake levers, rear-view mirrors, a bicycle computer, and much more. The flask will distract and also add weight to the front of the bike.
Another way is to install the holder with ties to take out. Another interesting, but rather rare option is the installation of a special plate with holes for the stem cover. Hole diameters and spacing are usually standard, allowing for the most common types of bottle cages that are usually mounted on the frame.
Upper frame tube. If the hike is to be long, then this place, as a rule, is located jars with an additional supply of water. They are usually placed in a case or bag made of fabric or leather and are attached with straps. It is also possible to install a holder made of plastic or metal wire. The top tube is still not very suitable for transporting bottles of liquid, especially non-standard sizes, as they can touch your knees with active pedaling and create inconvenience. In addition, cables are usually laid along it.
Seatpost. It also hosts flask holders quite often, as it is easily accessible while riding. The disadvantages of this arrangement are the lack of holes for fastening, as well as the impossibility of visual control. If the flask falls out on the move, then you most likely will not notice it, and as a result, it will be lost.
Saddle. The saddle frame can also be used to install the holder. Most often, holders made of metal wire with special clips or screws are used, which are attached quickly and easily and allow you to transport several flasks at once. The main disadvantage is the same as in the previous method. difficult control.
The trunk. If your bike is equipped with this device, then you can also place a supply of water on it by installing special holders on it. In this case, you can transport a fairly large number of bottles, placing them horizontally or vertically. Since the trunk is located at the back and when driving falls out of sight, this option has the same drawback as the previous two.
Front fork. In some cases, the front fork of the bike is used to transport water. The holder attaches directly to the pants, and you can use both sides at once. right and left. This method is good in that there are no special restrictions on the size of the container with the liquid and allows you to attach rather large bottles. The fork is always in front of your eyes, which is another advantage, since the loss of the flask will not go unnoticed.
Bike helmet. This is a rather curious way of transporting flasks, in which the holder is located directly on the protective helmet. Water weighs quite a lot, and an additional pound or more creates an unnecessary load on the neck, so this option is not widely used.
As you can see, there are quite a few places that allow you to fix a bicycle bottle cage, and everyone can choose the design to their liking, guided by criteria such as ease of access, convenience and reliability of fixing the vessel while riding, as well as personal preferences.
Materials for making holders
The design of bicycle bottle cages is quite diverse both in design and appearance, as well as in color and material that is used in their production. In most cases, the following materials are used for the manufacture of such fasteners:
- Aluminum. The bottle cages made of this metal have a low weight, high strength, but with constant use they scratch the bottle. In addition, the fixing reliability decreases over time.
- Plastic holders are one of the most popular, as the bottles fit very tightly in them, and they can be removed and put back in quickly and easily.
- Stainless steel is a fairly reliable and inexpensive material, but with intensive riding on rough terrain, structural destruction often occurs in spot welding.
- Titanium alloy. Titanium holders are strong and lightweight, but quite expensive.
- Carbon. CFRP is the lightest material used in bicycle bottle cages, but is very expensive and is mostly used in professional sports.
- Cloth and leather are commonly used for holders that attach in places that have no seating holes. As a rule, they have an individual design and serve as a beautiful and stylish accessory.
The design of the bottle cage and the material from which it is made largely depend on its location, as well as the expected operating conditions. For simple rides over short distances, a regular plastic or aluminum bottle holder is suitable for a small size. Those who are going to participate in races or long trips should pay attention to titanium or carbon.
Methods for attaching bottle cages
In most cases, installing the bottle cage is straightforward. To attach it to the bike, simply align the holes in the base of the holder with the corresponding holes on the tube and fix it with screws. Difficulties arise when there are no special seats on the frame or when placing the bottle clamp in a non-standard place.
There are several ways to solve these problems. The easiest way out of the situation is to fix the holder using special clamps, which are usually included in the product delivery set. Some cyclists use straps or plastic ties, but this is highly discouraged as they may not provide adequate support.
The next option is to drill holes in the frame and fix the bottle cage with self-tapping screws. Doing this is also highly discouraged, because such actions can lead to weakening of the frame structure and its destruction.
You can fix the device for transporting water bottles with glue, but the reliability of such an installation is due to the properties of this glue itself. Modern formulations may well provide sufficient fixation strength, but it all depends on the magnitude of the loads that the holder experiences when driving.
In some cases, the bottle cage is simply welded to the bike frame or other location. This method is most suitable for frames made of alloy steel. It is still better to weld not the holder itself, but a separate plate with projections and holes, to which it will be screwed in exactly the same way as in the very first standard version.
Leather or fabric straps with tongue or slotted buckles, or Velcro straps can also be used as fasteners, especially if the holder itself is made of these materials. This mount is quite reliable and easy to install and remove.
Some companies offer a rather unusual bottle holder. with magnets. The kit includes a special bottle and a plate that fits into a regular slot on the frame. The surface of the bottle has a groove in the shape of this plate and a strong magnet that is attracted to the plate. The manufacturer claims that in the course of the tests carried out, this method of installing the flask showed excellent results. The cost of such a device is approximately 50.
Homemade flask holders
To make the simplest bottle holder, you need three narrow plates made of tin or plastic, the size of which is selected depending on which vessel you plan to use. The plates need to be drilled for standard mounting screws. Then two of them are bent into a circle, and their ends are connected with screws that will be used to fix the holder to the frame. The third plate bends in a semicircle and serves as the base for the holder.
The bottle cage can be made from thick steel or aluminum wire, based on production models. The wire should be bent in the shape of a holder and then metal plates with mounting holes should be soldered to it. Bending will require special equipment, although if you are smart, then a pair of pliers with a vice will be enough.
A holder made of leather or fabric is also suitable for self-production. Such a device can be easily sewn with your own hands, you just have to show a little imagination and diligence.
As we have already seen, there is a huge variety of bicycle bottle holders. They can be mounted in different places, they are made from different materials, and the cost varies widely. The choice is yours!
