Types of wings and their effectiveness
Stationary short wings
They are usually made of plastic. They are attached to the frame or fork or at one point with a bolt. They are about one and a half times shorter than the long wings. The stationary short fenders are close to the tire and provide pretty good protection. These fenders are lightweight and well-secured, but provide poor dirt protection for the front derailleur and shins. Personally, I had such wings and broke very quickly. Quick release short wings

Stationary long wings
They are made of metal and metal-plastic. Bolted to frame or fork at three locations. As you can see, there are no ideal bicycle fenders. The longer the wing and the closer it is to the wheel, the better the protection. Installation of quick-release fenders
Quick release fenders attach to the head tube and seat post. These wings are usually very wide, so they provide good protection, including from side splashes. Their main drawback is, perhaps, one: not all quick-release rear fenders can be used with the trunk. The easily removable wings does not mean that they will be easy to steal: the wing (which is rear, which is front) does not attach directly to the bike, but to the mount, and if the wing itself can be removed very quickly, then it takes time to release the mount.
Also, the fenders include a special flap that is attached to the bike frame. It can still catch a certain amount of dirt flying from under the front wheel.

Removing and putting on such a wing later is a matter of a few seconds, but depending on the design, there may be some problems, the main of which is backlash. The rear wing attachment is fixed to the seat post. If the post is too smooth, without the rubber pad to increase friction, the wing can move during the ride. - Saddle clamp. not very popular, but cheap type of fastening, which is less and less common. Has a regular bracket with two eccentric ears. Clamped by it, no additional tools are required.
Installation of a sports bog
It should be understood that all bogs are different, so it will not work to tell how all models and types are mounted. To mount both bogies, we need a 4a hexagon and / or a screwdriver (depending on the type of wings) for older models. open-end wrench 10 mm and 15 minutes of free time.
The rear wing mounting process is as follows:
- Cut off the label and plastic ties, if any.

Suppose your frame and fork allow for bog mounting. In this case, you need a screwdriver and / or a 10 mm wrench. To fasten the arcs. an 8 key or a 4 hexagon. Attaching the front fender is very simple:
- Lean the front fender against the hole in the crown of the fork, or on the gorilla if the shock absorber.
- Insert the supplied mounting bolt, washer and nut. If there is a thread in the gorilla, then just attach the bolt.
- As you can see, the arcs have almost fallen into place, and they only need to be tightened. All modern forks are threaded in the bow ears. So just screw both arcs.
- Adjust the height of the bog so that it is as low and close to the tire as possible, but does not hit it.
- Tighten the bolts all the way.
Installing the rear mudguard
The rear fender is a little more difficult to install on a bike. A full-length bogie at the end can be attached to the frame or have a quick-release seat tube clamp. The latter is more versatile and fits almost all bicycles, and does not require removing the wheel for mounting. Also, almost all modern bogies have adjustable bows for greater versatility. - If it has a thread, just insert the bolt, otherwise insert the through bolt, washer and insert the nut.
- As in the first case, screw the arcs to the frame.
- Screw / snap the clamp onto the seat tube or screw the end to the frame.
- Adjust the bogie in height relative to the frame and tighten all the bolts.
- Put the wheel back in place and recheck the brakes if necessary.
Done, you have installed both fenders and are now completely protected from dirt.
Should you leave your bike in the workshop?
If you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to take it to the workshop for installing swamps. The procedure will take about 20 minutes for complex frames, in most cases it will be done right in front of you.
Usually the desire to install bicycle fenders comes after driving on a field road in rainy weather. Of course, the work in this case will be dirty. It is recommended to clean the bike before taking it to the workshop.
