How to Attach Mudguards to a Bike

Sports bicycles (mountain, cross, two-suspension) are usually ridden without wings, in sportswear. But if you want to install the wings, it is better to choose quick-release ones. They can be carried in a backpack when rain is expected and quickly attached to the bike when needed. The rest of the time they will not rattle and annoy you. Such “mountain” or sports quick-release fenders do not completely cover the wheels, but only the most important areas (opposite the back and chest, face). If you often ride in regular clothes around the city, then you better install full-size fenders that cover a large sector of the wheel. In this case, pay attention to the possibility of attaching them to the frame of your bike, or simply contact our consultants. A compromise option for sports may be a small guard on the lower tube of the frame. It does not interfere, does not rattle, but protects from splashes only the most important part of the body for safe sports skiing: the face and eyes. You don’t need much more if you choose a mountain bike or fitness bike.

Bike wings

Bicycle mudguards are the most controversial topic for all cycling enthusiasts and pros. Bicycle masters prefer to ride without them. But for regular trips around the city, and even outside the city, cycling wings provide a number of advantages. I myself had a total of? 3 pairs of different types of wings. I haven’t found the perfect wing yet, but unfortunately only the rear bicycle wing.

It is secured with a plastic clip and fixed to the seat tube. Perfect. Spinning back and forth. But this is not critical. But the mount does not fall off.

On the Kotovsky website it is more or less about the wings on the bike. But not completely. Let’s go over the main arguments of the opponents of bicycle fenders.

Excess weight. In one of my articles, I expressed my attitude towards lightening the bike, but in short. do not engage in crap. In relation to the fenders, this means that nowadays all good fenders have perfectly acceptable weight classes. Metal as a material is a thing of the past long ago.

The aerodynamics are deteriorating. In my opinion, this item could only be used in time trial races, where every second counts. In ordinary pokatushki, at normal speeds, the influence of the wings on aerodynamics is vanishingly small. For those who really feel the negative effect, I can only advise you to exercise and eat more.

The appearance deteriorates. I can’t argue with that. for me the wings on a bicycle are disgusting, and I can not do anything about it. I will only note that I am talking about sports bikes, on city bikes and touring shields look quite harmonious.

Wings will not protect you from rain, you will still be wet. Sounds reasonable, but only in case of rain. Nevertheless, most often we have small rains, which are not a problem, as the bike dries before our eyes. It is quite another matter when the stream of water from the rear wheel beats gently into the sirloin, soaking the diaper. Riding with a wet diaper is quite unpleasant, and on many saddles, painful. I’m not even talking about possible health problems.

If you are too lazy to read further, watch a video about wings. What are they:

The site lomasterclass.ru tells about different types of bicycle wings.

Types of wings and their effectiveness

Stationary short wings

They are usually made of plastic. They are attached to the frame or fork or at one point with a bolt. They are about one and a half times shorter than the long wings. The stationary short fenders are close to the tire and provide pretty good protection. These fenders are lightweight and well-secured, but provide poor dirt protection for the front derailleur and shins. Personally, I had such wings and broke very quickly. The mountings were not so hot at all.

Quick release short wings

Made of plastic, they are attached to the frame with a special clip. The distance between the wing and the tire is 10. 20 cm. Because of this, the level of protection is much worse and the dirt flies in all directions. The quick-release short fenders are insensitive to clogging with mud between the fender and the tire and are quickly removed when transporting the bike. But, with them, the cyclist will be covered in mud. If the height is too high, such wings become a meaningless accessory that does not fulfill its main function. The plastic mount on my fender came off pretty quickly. Also not a hot option

Stationary long wings

They are made of metal and metal-plastic. Bolted to frame or fork at three locations. Provides maximum protection because it covers a quarter of the front wheel and half of the rear wheel, and is close to the tire. Stationary long fenders at the rear can be combined with the trunk. When buying such wings, one should take into account that they are heavy. Another disadvantage is that, due to the short distance, dirt clogs up between the wheel and the wing. Therefore, these fenders are usually installed on road and city bikes.

As you can see, there are no ideal bicycle fenders. The longer the wing and the closer it is to the wheel, the better the protection. But, such wings are not suitable for cross. country and other extreme disciplines, for example. Even the best wings will not help in heavy rain. Extremals, for whom water and dirt are little things on the way to victory, they don’t need them at all.

But Kotovsky has a different opinion about the road racers.

attach, mudguards, bike

Road Bike & Hybrid Fenders

Here, the question of appearance is even more important than in the case of mountain bikes. There is a very elegant option that almost does not disfigure the road. the Crud RoadRacer Mk2. Personally, I haven’t had time to get one yet, but a roadie buddy recommended it.

The system is easily removable and adaptive; such fenders are almost invisible on a bicycle. According to my friend, they protect from water perfectly.

Alternatively, the classic SKS Race Blade can be supplied. I put these on a hybrid, with the onset of the rainy season in our Estonia. The design is also easily removable, impressions from several years of operation are positive.

How to choose bike fenders?

Next, let’s talk about how to properly install the fenders on your bike. There is a good manual on the site http://bikes.sportiv.ru/.

Installation of fenders

Mounting mudguards on a bike is extremely easy, and finding a really good mudguard is much more difficult. The whole variety of bicycle fenders can be divided into two types: fixed and quick-detachable.

Stationary screws are attached to the front fork and rear stays. For city models, they sell large bicycle fenders that allow you to cover up to half the wheel circumference (they are usually made of metal and are additionally fixed with long “mustache” of wire at the ends of the wheel axles).

It should be noted that the longer the wing and the lower it is located above the wheel, the higher the degree of protection against splashes and the lower the passability: on difficult routes, dirt will very quickly clog the space under the wings, making it difficult to move.

By the way, the installation of this type of bicycle fenders in pictures was described on the website http://velotur.org

So, this is what it was originally, a bicycle without fenders.

And here is a set for attaching one wing:

Now you need to fix the rods with the bicycle fender as follows:

We collect the wings and they look like this:

Before installing the fenders, it is advisable to completely disable the rim brakes so as not to interfere.

We fasten the front fender in three places: we unscrew the white reflector and tighten the first fastener under its bolt, and we had to put two clamps on separate bolts with large washers, and not on the axle of the front wheel, for which they (clamps) were apparently intended.

For the rear wing, we bend the plate and fasten it in four places: we fixed two clamps as in the case with the front wheel, for the third fastening we need a bolt for six, we string it on the plate and a tube connecting the fork of the rear triangle

and the last one at the very bottom of the seat tube:

In the end, you may need to make a small adjustment to the fenders, you can move the clamps and other attachments to seat the fender so that it does not rub against the wheel. And only then we tighten all the bolts to the end.

In total, the wings are installed.

Installation of quick-release fenders

Quick release fenders attach to the head tube and seat post. These wings are usually very wide, so they provide good protection, including from side splashes. Their main drawback is, perhaps, one: not all quick-release rear fenders can be used with the trunk. The easily removable wings does not mean that they will be easy to steal: the wing (which is rear, which is front) does not attach directly to the bike, but to the mount, and if the wing itself can be removed very quickly, then it takes time to release the mount.

READ  How To Change The Code On The Bike Lock

Also, the fenders include a special flap that is attached to the bike frame. It can still catch a certain amount of dirt flying from under the front wheel.

Now, in fact, a short story about how to install fenders on a bicycle. Small, because almost always bicycle accessories are equipped not only with all the necessary mounts, but also with installation instructions, often with diagrams. Note to rim brake owners: loosen the fenders before installing them.

It may be that a reflector (corner reflector) is already installed on your bike in the place where you need to mount the stationary fender. It’s okay, as a rule, the length of the bolt allows you to secure both accessories.

Installing the front fender

Usually, the front wing is fixed at one point (unless you have a design with a “mustache”), while the rear wing can have two fasteners: it is screwed to the frame with a screw and additionally fixed with the lower part to the very bottom of the seat tube (for this, at the narrow end of the wing there may be arcuate latch). Of course, if your bike has a rack, the rear fender fits under it. So that it vibrates less and does not shift when driving, you can use rubber bands, ties or somehow additionally pull the wing to the trunk.

Installation of easily removable fenders

Installing easily detachable fenders is also not difficult. The front fender brace is inserted into the head tube from below and tightened with an adjusting screw. Everything. Now insert the wing into the groove (until it clicks). Removing and putting on such a wing later is a matter of a few seconds, but depending on the design, there may be some problems, the main of which is backlash. You may need to independently, as they say, “modify the structure with a file”: how exactly. see the situation.

The rear wing attachment is fixed to the seat post. If the post is too smooth, without the rubber pad to increase friction, the wing can move during the ride. In addition, if the wing is not rigid enough, it can also twitch from side to side, so choose a model that is wider. The easily removable rear wing has one important advantage: depending on the specific situation, you can easily change the distance to the wheel and the angle of the wing.

Remember that you can pick up the nicest fenders (or maybe even improve their splash-holding properties by attaching pieces of plastic to the ends of the fenders), but they still won’t protect you from splashing the cars on the left, and your back (or your backpack on it) from rain from above. Therefore, for a comfortable ride in wet weather, we recommend getting a backpack cover and / or raincoat. Also look out for visor helmets.

How to attach the visor to your bike. How to install fenders on a bike: step by step instructions [2019]

Not all bicycle models are equipped with fenders. However, after riding in the rain or mud, the bike owner begins to seriously think about their need. In the article below we will talk about the types of wings, their advantages and disadvantages, installation methods.

Do you need fenders on a bike

It is easy to guess that the main task, as well as the main advantage of the wings, is protection from water and dirt. After installing them, the owner of the bike will be relatively isolated from splashing from under the wheels. However, some disadvantages should be taken into account:

  • Increase the total mass of the bike. This parameter will have a significant impact in the case of installing metal models, which are currently rare.
  • Decreased cross-country ability. When driving over irregularities, the activated shock absorption can cause the wheel to rub against the protective element. In addition, if the bike is equipped with rain fenders (minimum clearance with the wheel), then when passing through muddy areas, they will instantly clog. This will create unnecessary resistance and may cause a forced stop. In urban conditions, the problem will be irrelevant.
  • Changing the original bike design. The point is controversial and depends on the personal preferences of the owner.

If the voiced cons are not scary, and you have decided whether you need fenders for a mountain bike, you can proceed with their selection and subsequent installation.

Types of fenders for a bicycle

There is no single classification of types of fenders for a bicycle. However, one of the main characteristics is length, or rather dimension. Full-size fit snugly to the wheel and provide maximum protection against water splashes. Short ones are installed significantly higher above the wheel surface and are designed, first of all, to protect the rider from dirt.

The next difference is the fastening method. The front fender is installed with a spacer that fits into a hub under the crown of the fork. The second option is to mount with a plate and screws that fix to the hole in the gorilla plug. Make sure your bike has the correct hole before buying.

Installing mudguards on a mountain bike

The exact installation sequence will depend on the design. Typically, manufacturers provide visual instructions that can give you a general idea of the location of elements and fasteners. In the material, we will talk about two installation methods: quick (using a sleeve and a clamp), and also more reliable (screwing the plate into special holes on the frame).

Fast (universal) installation option

This method involves fixing the front wing with a strut. The protective element itself consists of two parts and is docked with a metal plate. The long part of the wing is worn on the bottom, the shorter part on the top. The workpiece is ready.

Next, you need to prepare the fastener and install:

  • Includes screw, washer and two pieces of spacer. A washer is put on the screw, after which it is passed from the bottom side of the metal plate.
  • The first part of the spacer is put on top of the screw without a nut, then the second part (with a nut) is slightly screwed on.
  • Now you need to look under the crown of the fork. There is a hole in which the spacer is inserted. After placing it, start tightening the screw with a screwdriver. Parts of the fastener will begin to move apart, which will ensure that the wing is held in the cavity. If the spacer is not wide enough, use the included pad. If it is absent, you can independently cut the rubber strip from the old camera.

Next, let’s take a look at how to install a rear mudguard on a bike:

Place the nuts inside the clamp, connect it to the wing attachment part, tighten the components with screws.

  • Take the wing and place the holder base on it. Secure it with a screw and washer.
  • Install a threaded pin in the extension mount, dock it with the base screw. Tighten the connection tightly.
  • Loosen the lock and remove the seat post. Put the clamp on it and press it with the screws. You need to twist them one by one, pulling each one by several turns.
  • Join the workpiece to the clamp using the appropriate screw.
  • By loosening individual fasteners, it will be possible to adjust the installed protection in height and angle of inclination. When driving over bumps, the wing may drop spontaneously. This disadvantage is present in some models, and it will be possible to completely eliminate its appearance only by installing another design with additional “antennae”.

    Installation through special holes

If your bike has holes above the rear and front wheels, then you can purchase fenders with mounting on plates. Instructions on how to put the front fender on the bike:

    • Insert the plate into the splash guard.
    • Open the brakes if V-brakes (rim) are installed.
    • Attach the wing with the plate to the hole in the gorilla forks. Thread the screw.
    • Adjust the height. rubber should not rub against plastic.
    • Tighten the fastener. If necessary, you can fix the nut with a wrench, and screw it in with a screwdriver.

A rear wing of this type can consist of two parts and is also attached through a special hole:

    • The bracket is installed on the front frame, after which the front part of the protective element snaps into it.
    • V-brakes open if necessary.
    • Take the bracket, screw and nut. The screw is threaded into a special seat above the wheel. The bracket is put on the screw as tightly as possible.
    • The wing is threaded through the bracket. its edges should lie in the grooves. The procedure is simple and seems complicated only in words. Planting depth is selected according to personal preference.

The instructions presented in this article will help you figure out how to attach the front and rear fenders to your bike. There are no universal recommendations regarding this procedure, however, the outlined sequence of actions will allow you to understand the general principle of installation and apply it on the purchased model. When choosing a wing, you should pay attention to its width so that it completely overlaps the tire. Length plays an important role. the larger it is, the less water and dirt will get on the rider.

How to install fenders on a bike: step by step instructions

Imagine buying a beautiful mountain bike. And on the first sunny day we decided to test the novelty to the fullest, having gathered with friends for a picnic several tens of kilometers from the city. And all would be fine, but the weather gave way to rain, and when trying to go faster, the whole back began to be covered with a thick layer of mud. Here you decide that tomorrow you will install the wings for the bike and will not tolerate it anymore.

Does your bike need this kind of protection??

Fenders are installed not only to protect clothing from dirt, but also to protect components from excessive clogging.

Many mechanics and advanced riders oppose the installation of mudguards on sports bikes. Despite the fact that to some extent they will protect the rider from dirt on the back, this is still an extra knot, which means. excess weight and additional problems with maintenance. Therefore, the decision to install the mudguards for the bike will be up to you.

    Choosing wings: types

Mudguards, like other bike parts, have a huge number of varieties:

    • The most common are full size wings. The oldest type that appeared with the release of the first bicycles.
    • Sports. They are made of flexible plastic, which saves them until the mount bursts. Designed to fit mountain bikes with 24-29 ”wheels. High-quality models generally fulfill their function and look quite stylish.
    • There are sports bog guards to protect the frame from dirt. They are a small plastic shield (about 15-25 cm), which protects only the rod itself and the steering column from dirt. This type of bicycle mudguard is very popular with mountain bike enthusiasts and new hardtails that do not have any dedicated arc mounts on the forks. A similar swamp is also installed on the seat tube to protect the bottom bracket and shock absorber.

    Decide on the size

Bicycle mudguards are selected depending on:

    • wheel size;
    • tire width;
    • frame type.

Most of the fenders are universal, that is, they can be simultaneously installed on wheels 24/26 / 27.5 / 28/29. Retractable wings are also found in nature, but as practice shows, this design is not very successful. The wider the wheels, the wider the bog, and the wider the bog, the better the protection. The standard width is about 60 mm. Fatbikes are usually not protected.

There are also several options for attaching fenders to a bicycle. Rear:

    • Seatpost / tube.
    • On a dedicated lintel on the frame and bow. Suitable only for frames that support this feature.
    • Using the eccentric seat clamp.

    Front wing attachment types:

    • On the stem with a spacer nut.
    • On the gorilla or the crown of the fork and arc. For rigid forks only.
    • Fork legs with straps.

    Bicycles with no fenders

There are very few such models. Basically, these are just track bikes, frames of the last century with a very clever design, as well as narrow-range and special-purpose bikes. It also happens that you can install fenders on a bicycle, but it is not recommended to do this. For example, in such cases:

    • Your bike has a rear shock. For this, the maximum carriage shield will fit.
    • Your bike belongs to some kind of sports discipline where you don’t need a bogie. This is usually BMX, trial, highway, street.
    • No attachment point or it is occupied by something else.

In all other cases, you can install bogs.

    Sports wings

Sports fenders are usually made of plastic and have a maximum of two attachment points. Mounting the mudguards on a bike can be done at home and even in the field. The types of rear bog attachment can be as follows:

    • Seatpost clamp. It can be produced both with a plastic adapter and with a cloth tape, which is more versatile, but may begin to slide over time. An improperly fixed and adjusted wing will continually fall onto the wheel. Installation requires hex socket / screwdriver.
    • Saddle clamp. not very popular, but cheap type of fastening, which is less and less common. Has a regular bracket with two eccentric ears. Clamped by it, no additional tools are required.

    Installation of a sports bog

It should be understood that all bogs are different, so it will not work to tell how all models and types are mounted. To mount both bogies, we need a 4a hexagon and / or a screwdriver (depending on the type of wings) for older models. open-end wrench 10 mm and 15 minutes of free time.

The rear wing mounting process is as follows:

    • Cut off the label and plastic ties, if any.
    • We wipe the attachment point from dirt.
    • Unscrew the clamp bolts and disassemble it.
    • Place the rubber gasket in the clamp and tighten it over the seatpost. It is not necessary to tighten the bolts all the way, you may need to adjust the position a little.
    • Next, we attach the bog leaf itself.
    • Adjust the position and tighten all the bolts to the end.

Mounting the front bogie with mounting in the fork rod:

    • Removing the front wheel.
    • We assemble the spacer adapter in accordance with the instructions, if it was not assembled earlier.
    • We connect the mounting hole and adapter with a bolt.
    • Insert the spacer plug into the stem hole and tighten it to the maximum, pre-aligning it perpendicular to the plug.
    • Putting the wheel back in place.

    Touring Bike Fenders

Full-size bicycle fenders are plastic or metal arches that cover the wheel approximately halfway down the horizontal line. Can be attached with two or one arch. There are versatile models on the market that are adjustable in height for maximum protection from dirt.

These bicycle fenders cover at least a quarter of the wheel and are very good at keeping out dirt. Fits on touring and hybrid bikes with 1.95 ”tires, but there are also mountain bike models.

Suppose your frame and fork allow for bog mounting. In this case, you need a screwdriver and / or a 10 mm wrench. To fasten the arcs. an 8 key or a 4 hexagon. Attaching the front fender is very simple:

    • Lean the front fender against the hole in the crown of the fork, or on the gorilla if the shock absorber.
    • Insert the supplied mounting bolt, washer and nut. If there is a thread in the gorilla, then just attach the bolt.
    • As you can see, the arcs have almost fallen into place, and they only need to be tightened. All modern forks are threaded in the bow ears. So just screw both arcs.
    • Adjust the height of the bog so that it is as low and close to the tire as possible, but does not hit it.
    • Tighten the bolts all the way.

    Installing the rear mudguard

The rear fender is a little more difficult to install on a bike. A full-length bogie at the end can be attached to the frame or have a quick-release seat tube clamp. The latter is more versatile and fits almost all bicycles, and does not require removing the wheel for mounting. Also, almost all modern bogies have adjustable bows for greater versatility. Therefore, full size 26 “bike fenders can fit 28” wheels.

    To install the swamp:

    • Pass it down between the rear stays until it rests against the bracket on the bridge on the frame.
    • If it has a thread, just insert the bolt, otherwise insert the through bolt, washer and insert the nut.
    • As in the first case, screw the arcs to the frame.
    • Screw / snap the clamp onto the seat tube or screw the end to the frame.
    • Adjust the bogie in height relative to the frame and tighten all the bolts.
    • Put the wheel back in place and recheck the brakes if necessary.

Done, you have installed both fenders and are now completely protected from dirt.

Should you leave your bike in the workshop?

If you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to take it to the workshop for installing swamps. The procedure will take about 20 minutes for complex frames, in most cases it will be done right in front of you.

Usually the desire to install bicycle fenders comes after driving on a field road in rainy weather. Of course, the work in this case will be dirty. It is recommended to clean the bike before taking it to the workshop.
