A bicycle is a vehicle that allows you to simultaneously get to the desired point, engage in your physical form and turn every ride into a walk. You don’t need to get stuck in a traffic jam or crowded in a full subway car on your way home from work. It is environmentally friendly. But at the same time, he also has a drawback: not everything can overcome long distances. Still, physical fitness may not allow you to drive several kilometers without stopping. But the solution to the problem can always be found. In this case, you can make a motorbike with your own hands.
This type of transport was widely popular with adolescents during the Soviet era. But modern capabilities and tools allow you to significantly change an ordinary bicycle and create an original means of transportation. Experienced home-made women, when asked how to make a motorbike with their own hands, will answer that it is very simple. Almost everyone can cope with such an activity.
Getting started, you need to decide which motor is best for your bike. They are of two types:
- Electric, which with the advent of compact but capacious batteries are becoming more and more popular.
- Internal combustion engines, a traditional option.
To create homemade motorbikes, gasoline engines can be used from a lawn mower, chainsaw and other tools and units.
Most often, they take an old chainsaw as the basis for making a motorbike with their own hands. Or rather, its engine. But there are some limitations here too. Do not take motors from small and light saws. They have too little power. A motor whose power is suitable for a bicycle. above 2 liters. from. (or 1.5 kW). And the higher this value, the better. But even with the specified value, the bike will be able to accelerate to 30-35 km / h.
When choosing an engine, you should also pay attention to the volume. In accordance with the Vienna Convention, this value should not exceed 50 “cubes”. Connecting individual parts to the frame
The motor is attached to the frame at the junction of the lower and seat tube. This is the most optimal, but not the only option. Sometimes you can see the motor attached to the trunk. The main thing is that the mount is reliable. During operation, vibration will be felt, due to which the motor may fall if it is not properly secured. It is recommended to use metal clamps for fastening. The motorcycle kit may include special perforated mounts. But their use is not at all necessary.
In addition to the engine, the battery and the fuel container must be attached to the frame.
Attaching all parts individually to the bike frame is only half the job. Next, you need to connect all the elements into one system. Otherwise, a homemade motorbike will lose all its new capabilities.
The first step is to connect the motor so that it transfers rotation to the wheels. For this, a special mechanism must be provided. There are two options for these mechanisms: with pulleys or chains.
The belt drive provides for a pulley system. This is an easier option. One pulley slides over the motor shaft. The second is attached to the rear wheel hub. A tension belt is put on between them. The disadvantage of this option is the shorter life of the belt (which stretches faster) compared to the chain. It should be noted that V-belts are not inferior to chains in terms of their characteristics (service life).
In the case of a chain drive, rotation from the engine to the wheel comes through the chain. On one side, it fits over the rear wheel sprocket. On the other hand, on the gear, put on the motor shaft. The chain drive is more durable than the belt drive. But she needs regular care.
The storage battery is connected to the engine ignition and brake lever. Next, you can install the exhaust pipe. You can do without it, but the exhaust gases will cloud the trip.
Electric motor installation
Using a gasoline engine when creating a motorbike with your own hands “kills in the bud” the idea of an environmentally friendly vehicle. Therefore, models with electric motors are increasingly common. The development of modern technologies allows you to do this.
The installation principle of the electric motor is similar to that of gasoline engines. This will require, in fact, the motor itself, a battery, control parts, a controller.
Another option that can be chosen when creating a motorbike with your own hands is the installation of a motor-wheel. This option is suitable for those who are versed in electrical engineering. Connecting a motor-wheel requires certain knowledge, without which it will be difficult to assemble an electrical circuit.
The set of selling the motor-wheel includes controllers, front and rear brake levers, “Pass” system, charger.
The rechargeable battery supplies constant current. The controller converts DC to AC, which in turn will drive the wheel motor. When the wheels start to spin, the electric motor is activated. For this, the system “Pass” marks. The brake levers are equipped with a microswitch. It is necessary in order to disconnect the power supply from the motor to the wheels during braking.
Installation of the wheel motor is carried out in accordance with the following steps:
- The bike turns with its wheels up. The rear wheel is removable. In its place there will be a motor-wheel. It is attached so that the outgoing wires are on the left (when looking in the direction of travel of the bike). This adjusts the direction of rotation of the wheel. If the sides are reversed, then the wheel will “go” in the opposite direction.
- The controller and battery are attached to the frame. The controller must be well insulated.
- Next, the remaining parts are installed and connected.
When assembling the electronic circuit, it is important to remember that the battery is connected via a fuse (20 A is sufficient). It will protect the system from fire in the event of a short circuit.
As you can see, there are several ways to make a motorbike with your own hands. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. Mounting the motor on the bike does not interfere with normal riding (pedaling). To do this, just turn off the motor and the clutch of the motorbike. This is very convenient when you want to take a leisurely ride and engage in your physical form. The motorized bike variant (regardless of its type) is a good option for people with an active lifestyle. It is both a recreation and a way to get around the city (and not only).
