What is required for repair
Based on the fact that, as a rule, most citizens do not have special tools at home, we will use the most affordable.
- Open-end wrench for 17 and an adjustable wrench is better. 2 adjustable.
- Steel “barb” or flat screwdriver.
- Platypus pliers.
- Litol-24 grease.
- A piece of fabric on which the “action” will take place.
- Cleaning cloth.
- A hammer.
And so, here it is the wheel.

Bicycle rear hub malfunctions
The most common failure of a bicycle rear hub, which can lead to the need to repair the rear wheel of a bicycle, is an arbitrary tightening or loosening of the cone. If the cone of the rear hub is loosened, then a large amount of play will be noticeable in the wheel. Alternatively, if the cone is overtightened, the severity of the bike’s travel increases noticeably and the crunch of the bearings can be heard. In both cases, it is necessary to immediately repair the rear hub of the bike. To eliminate these malfunctions, it is necessary to remove the rear wheel from the bike, if it is a sports high-speed or mountain bike, then an eccentric clamp can be used on them, and in this case the wheel is removed without using additional keys. On entry-level bicycles, the wheel can be screwed in with two nuts, you need a couple of wrenches.

Unscrewing a stuck ratchet
It so happens that there is not enough effort to disrupt a rattle that has been tightly tightened for several years. In this case, lengthening the key lever will help.
Many in the garage will find an iron pipe or bar about 60 cm long.Then you can simply put this pipe on the handle of an adjustable wrench or the tooth of an open-end tool, or do it in a tricky way and assemble a two-arm lever.
- Take a couple of short, 6-8 cm long bolts M8 or M10 and pick up two corresponding nuts for them.
- Insert one of the bolts into the hole in the ratchet puller, and thread the other through the hole in the handle of the adjustable wrench. These bolts should be secured with nuts to hold them in place.
- We insert the pipe between two bolts: the puller installed in its place and the adjustable wrench put on it. Now all that remains is to push the resulting lever down to disrupt the ratchet.
Usually with a lever from 50 to 60 cm, any rattle is unscrewed in almost one motion.
Falling wheel stiffness
The wheel is the most loaded part of the bike. During operation, the wheels have to withstand shock loads of different magnitudes, as a result of which the rim profile can have dents and other deformations.
On the new wheels, centered by robots at the factory, residual spokes remain stresses, but after a short run down the street, they stretch. With a strong impact, the hub axle may deform, which will cause the wheel to turn eight even if there is a perfectly flat rim.
Very often, overtightening of the spokes will result in a drop in the correct wheel stiffness. Disc brake operation promotes the development of the umbrella when the spokes on the side of the rotor attachment are slowly loosened. As in the case of a drop in frame stiffness indicators, all this leads to an increase in the likelihood of breakage and more noticeable deformations in the future.
How to Install Rear Wheel Hubs and Bearings on PT Cruiser
The rear wheel bearings are permanently sealed assemblies within the hub and are not serviceable on the PT Cruiser. A failed wheel bearing requires replacement; however, the hub requires several special tools and a powerful press to remove the pressed-in hub bearing. These tools are not commonly found except in mechanical workshops or service centers. Removing a hub and sending it to a facility that has these tools is the easiest and cheapest way to get the job done.
How to disassemble the ratchet?
To repair the ratchet with your own hands, you need a hammer and center punch. Instead of a center punch, you will need a large nail or self-tapping screw. It is better to disassemble the device on a wheel so that you can hold it.
- The ratchet spins on the wheel. A center punch is inserted into the hole on the nut, and by turning clockwise with a hammer, the mechanism is disassembled.
- The stars are removed with a puller and a key. There are balls inside under the nut. There is also a second ball track on the wheel.
- To prevent the balls from scattering, you must put a rag or box.
- The smallest asterisk is unscrewed counterclockwise. The rest are just filming.
Now you need to look at the condition of the mechanism, pawls and lubrication. Dogs wear out most often. They can be replaced. A special repair kit is made of dogs and rings. Be sure to wash the ball bearings.
If the balls are black and there are frayed metal particles, then the bearings have broken. Each one needs to be examined. If there are dents on them, then it is recommended to replace them.
Next, we collect all the parts in reverse order. The flare nut must be tightened with force, and the play for the sprockets relative to the wheel should be adjusted with inlaid, thin rings.
Thus, it is much cheaper to repair the mechanism with your own hands and does not take much time and effort. And it is necessary to perform such actions regularly so that cycling is pleasant and safe.
How to disassemble and reassemble the rear wheel hub of a bicycle
Almost all modern bikes are equipped with non-brake freewheel bushings, which not only increase the speed characteristics of the bike, but also greatly facilitate the efforts applied by the cyclist to maintain the pace set by him.

Rear Wheel Hub Repair Basics
Rear hub breakage is one of the main causes of wheel assembly failure. Of the main reasons, one can single out both weakening and strong tightening of the cone assembly. As a result, the user can feel both a strong backlash and a difficult rotation of the wheel with a crackling bearing. But in both cases, the only correct solution would be to repair.
To do this, you need a set of 15 and 17 mm open-end wrenches. The first step is to loosen the locknut, which is the main nut backstop locking element. After that, depending on the malfunction, we loosen or vice versa tighten the flare nut. The ideal option would be a good and smooth wheel travel without visible backlash. After the end of the process, we wrap the locknut in its original position.
Often, on inexpensive bicycles, deformation of the rear hub axle can be observed. This is due to the poor quality of the parts. This malfunction is very easy to fix by replacing a better quality part. Such defects can be avoided by carrying out routine maintenance of your “pet”, which consists in cleaning and lubricating the mating elements. Bearings or seals have to be changed much less often.
With infrequent lubrication or if the axle is bent, the bearings can make grooves in the wheel hub. To eliminate this defect, the hub itself or even the entire wheel should be replaced, which is a costly measure.
The main elements of the rear bicycle hub
Let us consider in detail the structure of the classic non-brake bushing of the rear wheel of the bike. The support ball bearings of the mechanism under consideration are slightly enlarged in comparison with the samples located on the front axle. This is due to the increased load exerted by a person’s body weight.
The ratchet is installed in two ways, namely:
- screwing on the thread of the knot;
- can be mounted in a bushing.
Bushings with multi-stage ratchets were previously only used on high-speed models. Today this assembly is used on almost all modern bikes.
A feature of the pressed-on non-brake bushing is the right flange, which plays the role of the inner housing of the ratchet mechanism. This design can be seen in detail in the figure. In addition, on the flange there is a track of the bearing remote from the center. The body rotates perfectly on two freewheel elements, which are based on balls with a radius of one and a half millimeters.
The work of the ratchet consists in engaging the ratchet gears of the pawls, which transmit movement to the inner part of the ratchet body. As a result, the hub starts rotation, transmitted to the wheel, which interacts with the hard surface and provides the movement of the bike.
During the stopping of the torque acting on the ratchet, the pawls still rotate with the wheel. It was during this period that a number of bearings began to work, providing a smooth movement of the structure.
Sports bikes designed for maximum speed are most often fitted with screw-on ratchet hubs that can be removed along with a set of sprockets. This feature is very handy when repairing the rear hub or replacing one of the sprockets. In general, the designs of both ratchet mounting options are similar.
Another wheel defect can be a faulty carriage. What should you do if such a nuisance happened to you? This will require dismantling the connecting rods and the sprocket system. This is a simple process for which you should gradually loosen all nuts and other assemblies, folding them in the correct order on a clean surface to exclude dust or, even worse, sand.
If this procedure still caused difficulties, simply follow these steps:
- turn off the left locknut;
- remove the carriage cup (pay special attention to the fact that a right-hand thread is cut on this side);
- take out the carriage assembly;
- we carry out a complete cleaning and flushing of the inside of the pipe;
- we wash all the elements of the carriage system, for this it is best to use kerosene or gasoline;
- now we assemble the assembly in the reverse order;
- the last step will be to check the absence of backlash and extraneous noise, which may indicate residual effects of the abrasive material.
In order to completely eliminate the appearance of undesirable, and most importantly, untimely defects, it is recommended to carry out seasonal maintenance and periodic cleaning of the rear wheel working unit. These actions will significantly extend the life of your bike and help save you money.
How to assemble a wheel hub with your own hands?
The rear hub arrangement on different bike models, although slightly different, has a number of similarities, since the hub design is typical. To assemble the bushing, you will need a set of wrenches, bearing grease, tweezers or a medical clamp, and a cone wrench.
Basically, assembling a bicycle rear wheel hub is not difficult. You just need to keep in mind some features. For example, the fact that its right-left ends differ from each other. The right cone must be screwed tightly onto the axle, fixed with locknuts and no longer touched, and the left cone must be used for further adjustment.
The bushing housing must be completely cleaned of the old bearing grease, and in its place put in a new, thick grease, and it is put on both sides of the housing. The balls should first be washed in gasoline and put them on the lubricant with tweezers. Do not spare the lubricant. the balls should be located in the lubricating layer so that they do not roll out. After finishing with the laying of the balls, on the right side, put a washer on them, and then insert the axle with the right cone.
Now you need to adjust the bearing. and at this, the assembly of the rear bushing of your iron horse can be considered complete. Screw in the left cone with a cone wrench until it stops, then lower it by about 45 degrees. While holding the cone, tighten the lock nut. If after that the axle rotates freely. you did everything correctly, if something interferes with the axle movement, squeeze the locknut. You may need to unscrew the locknut to loosen the left taper slightly.
Bicycle rear hub device
Of course, you don’t have to bother yourself with the problem of self-service of the bicycle bushings. after all, you can always take your iron horse to a specialized service center, and there specialists will do everything without your participation. However, first, it can be quite expensive. Secondly, there may not be a specialized service center nearby, and most likely no one will want to give their bike to an untrustworthy “basement” workshop. it may simply be dangerous, because no one will give you a guarantee that the master conducting the maintenance of your bike is qualified to do so. Third, the ability to disassemble, maintain, and reassemble your bike is a very valuable skill because you know what your bike needs and you can give it to it.
- So you’ve decided to service the rear hub of your bike yourself. First you need to disassemble it. To get to it, you will first have to remove the cassette, for this you need a special key. This must be done carefully so as not to damage any parts.
After disassembling the bushing, it must be cleaned of old grease, wiped with gasoline, inspect the parts for cracks and damage, and only then proceed with assembly.
What you need to remember when repairing
When disassembling and assembling the bushing, be careful. often the materials and alloys from which its components are made are quite fragile. Use eye protection in case a splinter of something is thrown into your face. Do not neglect the elementary safety rules, do all work carefully, without haste. otherwise there is a risk of damage to the bushing or damage to your own health.
