How to assemble a handlebar on a bicycle

Rear and front flap

To remove the front and rear shields, unscrew the M5 nuts on the ends of the front and chain forks, thus freeing the shield supports. Further, to remove the front flap, the front wheel turns 90 degrees, the flap fastening screw is loosened and the flap with supports is removed. And to remove the rear, it is necessary to unscrew the nuts with screws on the upper and lower frame bridges.

The trunk can be removed much easier. just unscrew the M6 nut and remove the screw, after which the trunk will already be separated from the bike. It is advisable to assemble the bike in the reverse order.

Having disassembled the bike almost completely, disassembling the trunk will no longer be difficult. You just need to unscrew the nut and remove the screw that secures it to the seatpost. Finished!

Whatever purpose you pursue, after the bike is disassembled, it must be cleaned and lubricated. Try not to miss a single detail, do a general cleaning. Thus, you will condemn your bike to a long service.

Particular attention should be paid to the bicycle fork. It would seem such a small and seemingly insignificant detail. Still, take it seriously. The fact is that a properly adjusted fork reduces the load on the arms when riding, improves the handling of the bike, and also increases the wear time of the steering bearings by reducing the vibration effect. So how to disassemble the plug?

Front shield

To disassemble the front shield, it is necessary to unscrew the nut on the front fork with a wrench and remove the screws, thereby freeing the shield supports. Then unscrew the screw that secures the guard to the crown of the fork. It is best to turn the front wheel 90⁰ while doing this.

Dimensions (edit)

There are different sizes of bicycle headsets, and more specifically, individual head tube options. Currently, you can find the following types of glasses:

  • Standard. size 30 mm.
  • Integrated. Available in several sizes: 1/8 “(41.1mm), 1/8” Italian Standard (41.95mm), 1/8 “FSA Standard (41.6mm).
  • Semi-integrated. range of sizes from 41.35 mm to 55.9 mm.

Each size has its own tolerances down to the millimeter. However, you should try to select glasses as accurately as possible in order to avoid fork backlash. This assumption will negatively affect the driving experience.

How to assemble a steering column?

Before proceeding with specific actions, it is necessary to carefully wipe with a piece of cloth the chamfers for installing the bearings, freeing them of oil and dust. It is also recommended to check the surfaces for chipping, chips, and other damage. If defects are found, you will have to remove and replace the bearing seating rings. If you ignore the problem, soon there will be damage to the bearing balls.

Now let’s go directly to work. First you need to fill the chamfers for the bearings with grease. It is recommended to use thick material for this. The assembly must be done starting with the lowest bearing. The latter is recessed into the seat. In this case, the separator should be in the upper position, and the balls should be laid down.

Next, a dust-free and lubricated steering column counter cup is installed on the bearing. An O-ring is also placed here, which will protect the internal space from the penetration of contaminants.

Then you need to turn the bike frame. After that, the upper bearing is installed according to the same principle as the lower one. The seat is locked with a boot. At the end, the outer seal and the stop washer are placed. Additional rings are put on the steering column, the number of which depends on the parameters of the frame and the size of the fork tube. The steering wheel is mounted on top of the rings. Then the washer is tightened and secured with a bolt.

Front wheel, rear guard and wheel

After you have removed the shield, it’s time to remove the first, front wheel. Very often, beginners are confronted with the fear. what if I can’t make out this important detail correctly? But there is really nothing to be afraid of. Perhaps the front wheel is the easiest to disassemble the bike.

First, you need to decide what it is attached to: a nut or an eccentric. If you lean towards the first option, you need to take both bolts with wrenches and, holding one in a stationary position, turn the second nut counterclockwise. If you are the lucky owner of an eccentric, then the whole process will take no more than two minutes. Just pull it towards you and twist it a little counterclockwise. Everything! Now we pull the wheel up and take it off without much effort.

It would be nice to put your bike on a special stand when removing the wheels, it will be easier this way.

To disassemble the rear shield, unscrew the nuts securing the shield to the ends of the chain fork and loosen the screws; then do the same with the nuts and screws on the lower and upper bridges of the bike frame and remove the shield with the supports.

The rear wheel looks like two peas in a pod. Therefore, the parsing process is identical. Make sure that the chain is not on the axle.

First of all, it is worth removing all tuning and devices from the bike: bags and sacks, side mirrors, horn, headlights, LEDs and reflectors. If a handbrake is present, it makes sense to immediately disconnect the cable from the steering wheel. Done! Now let’s get down to the order of parsing the main parts:

  • First of all, it is worth disassembling the steering wheel;
  • After that, we remove the saddle from the frame;
  • We twist the pedals;
  • We pass to the front flap and wheels;
  • The rear guard and front fork can be removed. How to disassemble the plug. described in more detail below;
  • Trunk;
  • Frame and carriage mechanism. Now you have an idea of the procedure for dismantling the bike. Let’s consider each detail separately.

Adjusting the steering column of a bicycle involves putting the handlebars in the correct position. To begin with, the rudder bar is placed perpendicular to the wheel. Then the washer is tightened until the backlash is completely eliminated. This action must be carried out so that the handlebar tilts freely to one side of the central position while keeping the bike suspended. Only then are the bolts tightly tightened directly on the steering wheel.

How to raise the handlebars correctly on bicycles with different types of speakers

Both professionals and novice riders want a two-wheeled vehicle to be comfortable and safe. An important criterion for comfort is not only the size of the frame, but also the height of the saddle and handlebars. When everything is adjusted correctly, it is easy to ride the vehicle, arms and back are not strained. If adjusting the saddle is straightforward, then the question of how to raise the handlebars on a bicycle arises for most people. There is no exact instruction, it all depends on the vehicle model.

As you can see, the steering column is not the easiest element of a bicycle‘s design. However, its maintenance can be handled with sufficient knowledge and experience. When assembling the steering column after scheduled maintenance of its elements, it is enough to focus on the sequence of actions described in our material.

Finally, it is worth noting that bicycle steering columns fail quite rarely, regardless of their type. Troubleshooting often requires only replacing bearings or tightening the main retaining bolt.

Semi-integrated column

Semi-integrated columns usually contain combinations of standard and industrial bearings. The cups of such designs completely go into the inner cavity of the head tube. From the outside, only anthers remain visible.

A semi-integrated bicycle column has a rather complex structure and a high cost. Despite this, the systems of this plan are considered the most convenient, since they make it possible to set the required rudder height without any special difficulties.

Steering wheel options

The handlebar height should be adjusted immediately before each use or after a long period of inactivity. The degree of physical activity while driving depends on the settings. With the correct adjustment of the bicycle handlebars, the muscles are less tired, the vessels in the groin area are not pinched, a person can travel long distances.

Bicycle steering column device, its types, installation and lubrication

To begin with, bicycles should be concretized, because sometimes there are misunderstandings on the Internet and in bike shops due to differences in terms. So, what is the bike controlled by??

Lifting algorithm for different types of speakers

Often times, handlebar height adjustments are made using special column configurations found on virtually all two-wheelers. Before lifting the element, you need to determine the type of structure installed on a particular bike. Adjustment work should be carried out according to the instructions.

How to assemble a children’s bike out of the box

Buying a new children’s bike in a box, you become the happy owner of an excellent developmental item not only for the child, but also for yourself. It’s time to plunge into childhood and remember the skills of assembling the constructor.

Required tools

As in the constructor, a set of tools is required for the correct assembly of the mechanism. In this case, they will be real.

!Bolt heads and nut sizes may vary on bicycles from different manufacturers. But the tools below are enough to assemble most children’s bicycles.

Wrenches 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 mm.

Adjustable wrench up to 32 mm inclusive.

We take the bike out of the box, remove all the husk from the bike, which is abundantly wrapped around the bike so that the paintwork is not damaged during transportation.

If scotch tape is used for fastening, then it is better to tear it with your hands so that in the process of removing cardboard and polyethylene, you do not damage the paintwork.

If nylon clamps are used for fastening, then bite them with either side cutters or scissors.

We open all packages or boxes containing bicycle parts and accessories. When the bike is unpacked, we have the following picture

We pass the chain protection through the connecting rod, put it on specially designated places for it, attach it with screws

If the holes on the bike stops do not line up with the holes on the guard, use a hammer to turn the bracket

So that after a few years the pedals can be unscrewed, lubricate the thread with a thick grease

If the connecting rods are aluminum, use a special paste that resists sticking to surfaces.

Pedals differ from each other: R. right-handed pedal, L. left-handed pedal

Standing on the right side of the bike, pedal to the right side

Standing on the left side of the bike, pedal to the left side

Wheels (main and additional)

First, inflate the tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (the pressure range is written on the side of the tire, either in ATM or PSI)

Using keys 12 and 13, attach the side wheels to the brackets

Unscrew the nuts by 15, put the guides, and on them the brackets with the wheels, then press them with the nuts. Adjust the height of the side wheels so that they are slightly higher than the rear wheel, then tighten the nuts

!In our case, the rear wing, trunk, as well as the included box are also attached to the wheel axle, because there are no special holes on the frame for attaching the wing and trunk whiskers.

Using a 14 or 15 wrench, screw the front wheel, having previously installed the rails in the special holes in the fork (they serve to keep the wheel in place if the nuts are loosened on the fly)

Thanks to these steps, the bike can stand without additional assistance, making it easier and more convenient to assemble it later.

If there is a bracket on which the reflector or basket is attached, unscrew the large nut (maybe 28, 32 mm), install the bracket and screw the nut back

Rotate the handlebars so that they are at an angle of approximately 70-80 degrees to the stem.

Tighten the nut to 13 so that the stem does not rotate.

Insert the steering wheel into the fork rod to the required height, then tighten the bolt with a 13

!Attention. You cannot raise the handlebars above a certain height. This is indicated by special risks applied to the stem. When the rudder is set to a certain height, they should not be visible. If you see them, then the stem should be sunk into the fork stem until they disappear. The same goes for the seat post.

The saddle can be either mounted on the seatpost, or lie separately from it.

Child’s Bike Assembly Fitting Handlebars

In the first case, simply loosen the nuts by 13 or 14, turn the saddle to the desired angle and secure them so that it does not turn neither left / right nor up / down.

In the second case, loosen the saddle nuts, slide it over the seat post, rotate the saddle to the desired angle and tighten the nuts.

The angle must be chosen so that the saddle is parallel to the ground when the seatpost is inserted into the frame.

Fenders, trunk, accessories

The rear fender is usually already on the bike, but you need to not only screw it down, but also check the manufacturer’s tightening of the bolts and nuts. Very often they are loosely tightened, which can lead to their unwinding during riding.

There are special threaded holes for the rear fender on the bike. Just screw the antennae to these holes with screws

At the front wing, you need to attach the lower part, as in the photo above, then the upper part

If the front or rear fender is crooked, you can adjust it with the screws that hold down the whisker plate. If that doesn’t work, just tuck one side of the mustache closer to the wheel

The roof rack is screwed into special holes in the frame. Screws threaded into the frame next to the seat tube are for securing the top of the trunk

Install reflectors. The front reflector has either a bracket or a handlebar clamp. The rear, as a rule, is attached to the trunk with nuts 8

Then put on soft covers that will protect your child in the event of a hit on the steering wheel.

The assembly will be completed by installing the basket for small things using the supplied clamps

Your child will be happy with the result of your work

Straight steering wheel

This rudder is a straight or slightly curved tube at the handles. Fits mainly on mountain or hybrid bikes. Large levers and a moderately sloped ride provide better bike control over rough terrain. Typical Applications. Extreme Mountain and XC.

The saddle mount allows for a seating position of approximately 45 degrees, giving the rider good visibility, fast pedaling and less stress on the spine.

The disadvantages of this shape of the steering wheel affect only on very long trips. When it is impossible to change the position of the arms and back, numbness and pain occurs. To avoid this, the steering wheel can be equipped with removable horns, which will allow you to relax on relatively flat sections of the path.

The steering wheels are straight (in common parlance. a steering wheel-stick) and with a rise (in common parlance. a steering wheel-riser).

Steering wheel “bullhorn”

This type of rudder follows the curve of the buffalo horns. The name confirms this. Convenient in that it is similar to a straight rudder with horns, but does not require additional components (namely horns). Therefore, it is lighter than its counterpart with installed horns. In addition, a variety of removable “horns”, windings and grips, rest attachments with elbow rests will help you improve your existing handlebars quite quickly and inexpensively.

How to choose a bicycle handlebar?

So, what to look for when choosing the right handlebar for your bike:

  • Hand positions. As can be seen from the listing of the various models, hand position is very important for the riding style (the ability to stretch out when tilting the body, step on the pedals off-road). In addition, duration is important, since changing the position of the hands over time is very important.
  • Body Position. The grip is an extension of the tilt and position of the body. For example, with a mountain steering wheel, it is almost impossible to bend over to improve aerodynamics, and it is difficult to transfer the emphasis to a drop on off-road.
  • Mounting type. the de facto standard is a bolted stem, but it can be of several diameters. For mining it is 25.4 mm, for road models. 25 and 31.8 mm.
  • The diameter of the steering wheel itself. grips and accessories are attached to it, which also may not fit. Usually correlates with bolt diameter and is 23.8 and 22.2 mm.

Note that the easiest choice of a bicycle handlebar is to choose one that suits your riding style. For cross-country tasks, a straight steering wheel is suitable, for a highway. a ram steering wheel. Understand if you need a steering wheel “butterfly” or “bullhorn” you will be able when you have driven several thousand of your first kilometers.

An important point. do not rush to change the type of handlebars that are installed by default on the bike. You risk ruining the landing. This can only be done under the strict supervision of an experienced cyclist.

And the last thing about bicycle handlebars is the materials they are made from. They are:

  • Aluminum
  • Steel
  • Carbon fiber (carbon)
  • Titanium

Carbon is a lightweight and durable material, but such a handlebar is expensive. Aluminum is the best option in terms of price and quality. Steel-titanium. for an amateur for the corresponding bicycles.

What is a bike stem?

Bicycle stem is designed to attach the handlebars to the vertical steering column post or directly to the fork stem. This part of the bike is responsible for the correct fit of the cyclist.

Combined with the right frame and saddle, stem can significantly improve ride comfort, reduce the rate of fatigue and improve pedaling efficiency.

Bicycle steering

A bicycle handlebar is more than just a piece that you can use to control your direction of travel. A bicycle handlebar also helps to maintain balance and takes some of the cyclist’s weight. In addition, the handlebar is a real control center of the bike.

A basket, bike computer, reflectors, signals and many other additional elements can be attached to the handlebars. On sports bicycles, speed switches and brake levers are attached to the handlebars.

The variety of bicycle handlebars today is quite large, the handlebars differ in the materials from which they are made, in shape and size.

Steering wheel ram or road

The classic road bike steering wheel has a straight base and handles bent to the bottom. the so-called ram’s horns. The cyclist can change the seating position from vertical to sporty (horizontal) with the back parallel to the ground. This allows you to accelerate to high speeds, minimizing wind resistance and fully utilizing the muscle strength of the legs.

Ideal for road and touring bikes. This shape provides four possible hand positions. A large number of possible positions allows you to move along the road for a long time without discomfort in your arms or back.

Bicycle grips and handlebars

Bicycle grips are the rubber (sometimes foam) ends of the handlebars that the cyclist holds onto while riding.

All models differ in weight, material, quality of the outer and inner coating and the place for a certain number of fingers. The main purpose is to firmly fix the hands on the steering wheel in all weather conditions.

Soft rubber grips are more comfortable on the hands, do not chafe the skin, but their lifespan is shorter than hard ones. Hard rubber handlebars last a very long time, but they can rub the palm bumps and finger bases during long driving.
