How to chain a speed bike will help the following video.
Reasons for a meeting or breakup
One of the main parts of a bicycle is the chain. But even with normal driving, it can fly off or burst. The main reasons for the breakdown:
- Damage to one of the stars of the transmission system. Speed bike transmission systems are divided into collapsible and non-collapsible. Replacement of the star is possible in a collapsible system. The non-separable transmission system is completely changed, complete. If one sprocket is damaged, driving is possible at speeds that remain serviceable.
- Incorrect speed setting. The front and rear derailleurs have special bolts that adjust the transmission. If these bolts are set incorrectly, then there is a possibility that when shifting gears, the chain will fly off.
Sometimes you have to resort to a complete replacement. To do this, the old one will need to be removed, and the new one installed.
- To remove the old chain, you will need to use a special tool. a squeeze. Having set the squeeze of the chain opposite any roller, they begin to tighten the screw so as to squeeze out the pin. Then the tool is loosened and removed. The device is also removed with the help of a squeeze in order to regularly clean.
To replace, you need a chain with the same number of links as the old, but shorter. To tighten, carefully place it on the gears and the derailleur in the same position as in the previous position of the links. Carefully fitting the rollers onto the gears, leave the two teeth open at the bottom. This step will make sure that the installation of the new one went right. Use the squeeze again to re-install the new pin. Both ends of the chain are placed in the tool cavity to form a hole for the pin to exit. Place your finger against the hole and gently, without haste, tighten.
The last step is to replace the pin. Make sure the pin goes in smoothly and easily. If resistance is felt, it means that both ends are incorrectly set and this needs to be changed. When installed correctly, the pin should fit snugly inside the roller, but it will not be difficult to place it.
Quite often, cyclists use a lock to quickly change or remove and clean the chain. On the one hand, this is convenient as it allows you to quickly remove the chain with a lock, on the other hand, it is better to leave a new chain intact at least until the start of regular suspenders, when it becomes clear how much more convenient it will be to use a replacement with a lock. Many cyclists have prejudices about the lock, as the chain supposedly breaks with it more often. There is no reliable data, but the new chain looks more reliable for most without a lock.
Do not forget that for a safe ride, you need to carefully monitor the operation of the bike and promptly eliminate all technical problems and change worn parts.
Features of chain tension on a bicycle without gears
When working with a regular bicycle, remember that it is forbidden to tighten the structure too tight. Normally, the value is allowed no more than 5 mm.
Chain tensioning sequence:
- The bike should be turned over and a soft cloth should be placed under the seat to avoid damage.
- The rear wheel is attached with two nuts. They should be loosened for comfortable mounting of the chain.
- The wheel is moved along inclined grooves to adjust the required level of sagging.
- After adjustment, the rear wheel is secured back onto the nuts, tightening firmly. You do not need to make great efforts so as not to damage the elements.
- The mechanism must provide free rotation of the pedals. That is why, after installation, you should check the bike in operation. Also, after the completion of the work, it is necessary to ensure that the axle of the wheel is parallel to the carriage.
Precise chain tension is essential for normal bike use. Excessive tension makes it difficult to pedal. In addition, the components of the chain drive quickly deteriorate. If the element sags too much, then the risk of its jumping off during movement increases.
The chain starts to slip when the tension is released due to its extreme tension. And when overstretched, it, in turn, quickly wears out the sprockets. So by putting a new chain on an old ratchet, you may not achieve anything. All the same, slipping on small stars will remain.
If this is not the first time you tighten the old chain, get ready to replace it soon. Remember that you can only remove two links from it once. In the end, you still have to spend money on a new part.
Types of bicycle chains
For single speed bicycles
Such chains are installed on city, children’s and teenage bicycles, as well as on vehicles with a sleeve. This type is characterized by the presence of one sprocket on the rear wheel and a gearshift in the rear hub.
Proper use and care of the components allows them to last a long time without wear. This is due to the fact that the mechanism looks like a straight line, so it is not subjected to unnecessary stress. These types are made from hardened, hard and thick plates that are pre-heat treated.
The single-speed links hold the mechanism more tightly, because of this, the load is distributed more evenly. This property allows the links not to stretch.
For multi-speed bikes
Such a mechanism is relevant in transport with gear shifting. The main difference is the presence of a gap between the component parts of the link. This factor allows the chain to move sideways. The design is characterized by a smaller width.
Misalignment is often diagnosed in such chains, this affects the convenience of bike control, and also leads to frequent wear of transmission parts.
Design includes internal and external links.
The structure includes hollow pins and plate perforation. They differ from conventional mechanisms in lighter weight, higher cost along with low strength.
Suitable for racing bikes where model weight is important.
With one repeating link
It is commonly called. Halflink. The difference from other models is that the links have the same structure and size, there is no division into internal and external. The advantage of the Halflink is that it is easy to dismantle, you can adjust the length and remove unnecessary links. This model is more prone to damage and stretching.
How to install a chain on a bike
Before installing the chain, you need to make sure that it fits your bike in length and width. A special axle with a pointed end is usually sold with a chain. It serves to facilitate installation, after pressing the axle, this end must be broken off with pliers. Also, the axle can be already installed in place if the chain is supplied without a special axle.
To install the chain, move the front and rear derailleurs to the small sprockets. Then pass the chain through the derailleur tension frame, do not mix up the directions, the lower roller runs the chain on the left and the upper one on the right.
We connect the open links, install the axis. We insert the link into the chain squeeze and fix it with a fixing screw. Press the axle into place by rotating the chain release handle, it should line up with the edges of the chain. Remove the chain from the squeeze, if necessary break off the end of the axle.
Installing a Bike Chain
Check that this chain link bends freely, if it runs tight, then it is necessary to adjust the axle with a squeeze. In this case, insert the link into the second seat of the squeeze, then you can see both ends of the axle.

Chain: choice and proper care
It is mounted at the back. It is rarely found on professional bicycles, more often on ordinary ones. To begin with, it is reasonable to simply understand whether it is necessary to engage in tensioning the chain on a bicycle or change it, since this step is important for adequate performance and is great. If on a speed bike it becomes difficult to adjust the gearshift settings.
Loose tension and tight tension are equally problematic when driving, so it is important to stop in time to keep the chain at medium tension. In this case, your task is to ensure that the length of the chain is the same as it was originally. For a high-speed bike, if the first two methods of tightening the links did not give the desired result, then you can try two other methods. The first method works only for high-speed bicycles that have already traveled with a weakened spring, that is, with an old gear shifter.
How to put on a bicycle chain will be described below, but for now we will consider how to disassemble a bicycle chain to repair it. As a result, the chain has lengthened slightly and will fall off when cycling. In order to put on the bicycle chain after repair, you must first open it and thread it through the frame of the machine.
How to install a chain on a bike
On the simplest single gear bike, a single wrench is all it takes to tension the chain, simply loosen the two rear wheel nuts. Most often this is a key of either 17 or 15. First, the bike must be turned upside down, and then slightly loosen the two nuts on the rear wheel. If you encounter the problem of chain sagging on a mountain bike or any other that has several gears, then in such a situation it is changed.
How to quickly pull a chain on a bike
The most popular manufacturers are KMC, Shimano and SRAM. In the lines of these manufacturers, you can find chains of various and different qualities. All these chains easily replace each other and, if the cyclist has a desire, he can go through the chains indefinitely until he finds the one that will completely suit him. When purchasing a chain, you should pay attention to the marking: usually firms put information about the quality of the chain in the number designation of the model.
Also, extraneous sounds from a lubricated chain often signal that it is worn out. TIP! Experts recommend having three chains on the farm: each of them should be operated for 500-600 km, then change them, choosing the shortest.
Removing the chain from a bike
Fitting the bike chain.
On domestic road bicycles, chains are made split, one segment of such a chain has a special lock. On sports bicycles, it is not possible to make the chain detachable, because this lock interferes with gear shifting.
When buying a new chain, you need to know which chains fit the system and cassette on your bike. For 9-speed cassettes, use a 6.5mm chain such as SHIMANO CN-7701 or CN-HG93. For 6.8 speed cassettes, use a 7.1mm chain like SHIMANO CN-HG50 or CN-IG51.
Chains are sold in two types. boxed and standard (almost like computer components in Retail and OEM deliveries). Usually the box contains a replaceable axle for connecting the chain segments. One end of such an axle is sharpened, which makes it easier to install. After the axle is pressed in, this pointed end must be broken off with pliers.
If the chain is not equipped with a special pointed axle (like many chains sold without a box), then the axle must be inserted into one of the segment plates.
If the bike has a chain without a lock, then you will have to press the axle out of the chain link. Also, this process will need to be carried out in order to reduce the number of chain links when necessary.
A special tool is needed to press out the chain axle. squeezing the chain. For this operation, you can select any link in the chain, the only condition is, when re-pressing it is better to use a new one, since after the operation the link loosens a little.
Insert the chain link into the tool and secure with the screw. Please note that some chain pulls have two seats, one for pressing out the axle (it is closer to the locking screw), and the other is used only for adjusting the axle. Tighten the squeeze screw carefully, thereby extruding the axle.
Do not push the axle out to the end if you plan to assemble a link with the same axle, otherwise it will be problematic to install it back.!
How to install a chain on a bike
Let’s start disassembling the bike chain. Everyone knows why you need a chain on a bicycle. Next, you need to put a chain on both sprockets of the bike. On regular road bikes, the chain is not that difficult to tighten. For some reason, then the chains served almost longer than the bicycle itself. The fact is that in such bicycles, the machine is responsible for the chain tension. In order to disconnect the bicycle chain, we installed a special lock on it, shown in Fig. 14.
An important element for the bike’s performance is the chain, the life of which depends on timely care. When working, it should not crack and creak. When adjusted correctly, the chain should have a slack of 10-12 mm. When pulled with your fingers, it should give in by 10-15 mm, and if this value is greater, then it must be pulled. Note that this is only relevant for bicycles or without derailleurs, or with planetary gears.
When the chain is too tight, it becomes very difficult to pedal on the bike, the parts of the chain drive wear out quickly. The amount of chain tension on a bike with a rear parallelogram derailleur is determined entirely by the force of the derailleur spring. But if the chain is too long, then this tensioner will not be able to compensate for its slack, and it will begin to hit the frame. This is especially true for bicycles with a short rear thrower.
This primarily applies to two-suspension bicycles. Very often, when installing a new chain on a high-speed bike, it is necessary to shorten its length, that is, remove several links. On double suspensions, it will be more correct to adjust the chain length by pressing the rear swingarm to the position when the front sprocket cassette is as far as possible from the rear ratchet.
The chain starts to slip when the tension is released due to its extreme tension. If this is not the first time you tighten the old chain, get ready to replace it soon. The bicycle chain is one of the most important parts of this mode of transport.
In addition, they are the driven link of the bicycle gearbox. At the same time, it is not difficult to guess that if the chain breaks off, the transport will not be able to go further. In the event of a collapse or breakage of the bicycle chain, with the best outcome, the driver will get off with the fact that he will not be able to go further. But often with this there are more serious consequences. For example, if there is no special guard on the rear wheel, the chain can fall into the spokes, but here the outcome is unfavorable in all cases.
The next danger in the event of chain breakage or loosening applies to those bicycles that do not have a handbrake. Before you start to tension the chain, it is important to understand one truth.
Another symptom that should alert the driver is if the chain began to slip. To begin with, the problem of sagging is most often encountered by owners of regular single-speed bicycles. The thing is that here the chain is not able to tension automatically, as in mountain or other similar types of bicycles. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, any chain has the ability to stretch, despite the fact that it is made of metal.
How to remove a chain from a bicycle
Depending on the riding style, the question of removing the chain arises either almost immediately after the start of riding, for example, in a trial or downhill, or, after many kilometers of walks, when maintenance and replacement of the chain is required.
How to put a loose chain on a bicycle
Not long ago, a child’s chain fell off while riding a single-speed bicycle. On a bike like this, this is a serious problem. Neither drive forward nor brake. It’s still good if the wheel doesn’t jam.
This is why an additional front V-brake must be fitted on single-speed bikes. At the very least, it will always help you brake in an emergency with a bicycle chain.
I told him on the phone how to put it back. It seemed to work out, I came home, they began to figure it out and eliminated the very reason that led to this. I decided to describe everything, since this problem often arises, and sometimes it has to be solved in the field.
First of all, you need to understand: why it flies.
How to tighten a chain on a bike at speeds?
Speed bikes have a more complex chain tensioning principle. There it is regulated by a special spring, which is located on the rear carriage. Accordingly, adjusting the chain tension by simply moving the rear wheel will not work.
The only available way to tighten the chain on a speed bike is by removing the chain links. This procedure is carried out in the same way as described in the paragraph about ordinary. You will also need a special squeeze and a few minutes of time.
When chain adjustments no longer help?
Chain stretching cannot always be eliminated by the trivial removal of unnecessary links. The thing is that under the constant influence of high loads, the links simply begin to deform and stretch.
So, the normal link length is considered to be 11.9-12 mm. If this figure reaches 12.1-12.6 mm, then the chain begins to lick the cassettes, and with a length of 12.9 mm, the chain will have to be changed along with the stars. You can measure the length of the link using the lips to measure the internal dimensions of the caliper.
Chain Removal Situations
Maintaining your bike is very important, and there may be several reasons for removing the chain:
- Deep cleaning. it is recommended to remove all elements from time to time and clean from grease and accumulated abrasive.
- Link damage and replacement.
- Replacing a worn chain.
- Change in length with a new sprocket combination, for example, on a mountain bike.
Home wear is primarily determined by elongation. An overstretched chain is cause for concern as link misalignment will severely damage the sprockets and can be hazardous to derailleurs.
It is quite difficult to notice wear by eye, and to determine it there is an indicator. the length of 24 links:
- if it is equal to 305 mm (304.8 value for a new set), everything is in order;
- 306.5-307.5 mm. it’s time to change;
- 307.5 mm. if the bike was still in use with such wear, then most likely the entire set of sprockets is damaged;
- 308 mm. the value of the damaged transmission.
Objectively, it is recommended to service the transmission every 500 kilometers, but this value is not fixed, since even 50 kilometers on rough terrain with an abundance of sand and mud in terms of wear can correspond to another thousand on clean city roads.
Some people prefer to cut the chain, but the stretch is usually evenly distributed, and the links can still damage the stars that cannot be repaired.
The algorithm of actions when putting on the chain is approximately as follows.
- Turn the bike upside down, placing it on the saddle and handlebars, or lift it up so that the rear wheel rotates freely.
- If the bike has a bicycle chain guard, it is better to remove it. This will make it easier and more comfortable to reach the chainring. If you are too lazy to shoot, or you can already reach the asterisk. well, it’s up to you.
- Place the chain completely over the rear sprocket. (If you have not removed the protection, then it may be more convenient to completely put it on the front sprocket).
- Place the chain over the chainring in the direction of rotation and pedal forward in the direction of travel. When the pedals are rotated, it itself is thrown over the remaining teeth.
Here you need to understand that if the bike is upside down, then the chain is thrown onto the lower part of the sprocket (in relation to you) and, scrolling the sprocket itself by the pedal clockwise, we throw it on the front sprocket entirely. If you start to throw the chain over the top of the sprocket in relation to you, you will not be able to pedal. after all, in fact, you will have to press the brake.
If the bike is in the normal position (wheels down), then again throw the chain on top of the sprocket and pedal clockwise. as if you were driving forward.
