This means that it is not out of place to know how they work, why they break down and how they are repaired. After theoretical preparation, we will go to the workshop, where we will examine the drums of a rare Chinese sedan Chery Jaggi, better known in Russia under the name QQ.

Pros and cons of drums

One of the main advantages of drum mechanisms is called its isolation from the environment. neither dirt nor dust gets inside. It is difficult to disagree with this, but with a proviso. when it comes to the dirt outside. All the wear products of the pads that appear in the drum inside cannot simply “get out” from there. All the beauty of being closed by a drum is visible in the photographs of the subject.

If in disc brakes the remnants of friction linings are simply blown out of the mechanism, in drum brakes almost everything remains in place. And further. Whoever in his life has operated trucks or ancient cars with “drums” in a circle should remember: if he drove through a deep puddle or ford, then after that it is necessary to press the brakes several times to dry them, otherwise they simply will not be there. There is no such circus with discs.

The drums also overheat perfectly and, unlike discs, they cannot be quickly cooled by the incoming air. At the same time, it is difficult to warp the drum itself (which cannot be said about the discs), but the braking efficiency of hot drums decreases very significantly.

From the point of view of dynamics, drums also lose to discs, since the latter are lighter. Plus, the maximum braking force of the drums is very limited. excessive pressure on the pads can simply “break” the drum. Discs can be compressed much harder.

Drum brake design

By far the drum brakes have not changed since their mass introduction in 1902 thanks to Louis Renault. True, those brakes had a cable drive, and therefore they were exclusively mechanical. Plus, they didn’t have automatic adjustment, so the driver had to regularly check the shoe-to-drum clearance. But the basic design, I repeat, has changed minimally.

We describe here the most common, classic design of a drum brake. There is a brake flap that is rigidly attached to the rear axle shroud or wheel trunnion and does not rotate. There is also a drum that is fixed on the wheel hub and rotates with it and the wheel.

The brake pads are mounted on the brake flap. On the one hand, the pads rest on the axles, on the other, on the pistons of the working brake cylinder (this can be clearly seen in the photographs). When the brake pedal is pressed, the brake fluid pushes the pistons in the working cylinder, which in turn push the brake pads apart. The pads are pressed against the drum surface and the vehicle decelerates. Friction linings are glued or riveted to the pads. To prevent the pads from falling out, hold-down springs are installed.

The nice thing about this design is that one of the pads has the property of wedging (it is called active). If you give an example, then imagine a car wheel, spin it well and try to insert some object with your hand between the wheel and the arch: on the one hand, the object will be pushed out, and on the other hand, it will be pulled even more into the space between the wheel and the arch, thereby wedging wheel. The same situation with the pads.

The second block (passive) is repelled by the drum, and its efficiency is lower than the first. this, on the contrary, is an unpleasant moment. To compensate for the difference, the friction lining of the passive pad is larger than the active pad.

The flip side of pad wedging is that the braking force does not increase in proportion to the pedal force. Simply put, you push the brake pedal and you get a very different, much more deceleration than expected. There is no such thing with disc brakes.

In order for the pads to return to their original position after braking, return springs are installed on them. Often, if the rear brake mechanism is drum, then the same pads are used when the parking brake is applied (“handbrake”). On one of the pads there is an additional lever to which a cable is attached, when moving the pads are parted.

On modern cars, the drum brakes are self-adjusting. That is, you do not need to climb, like on the ZIL 130, under the car once in some thousand km or after repairs to measure the gap between the friction linings and the drum.

However, even on modern cars, the parking brake still needs to be adjusted. Therefore, the spacer rack, thanks to which the pads are spread when tightening the parking brake, tends to lengthen or shorten due to the rotation of the nut (it is also clearly visible in the photo). Another of the positive aspects of drum brakes is the area of ​​the working surface of the friction lining. it is in any case larger compared to disc brakes.

But due to the peculiarities of working conditions (see above), the wear of the linings is uneven, which means that the force will also change with wear. In turn, no one bothers to increase the working area of ​​the linings by increasing not only the diameter of the drum, but also its width, and this is an indisputable plus. This is used with skill by the designers of trucks, for whom it is more important to brake 20 tons within the limits of decency than the delicate connection between the driver’s foot and the acceleration of deceleration of the car.

over, even if disc brakes are installed in a circle on a passenger car, then, with a high degree of probability, the parking brake mechanism is implemented according to a drum scheme. They just make a groove in the disc and create their own small drum and place it inside the pad.

A few words about the already obsolete drum brakes. In search of simpler and more efficient execution options, engineers, in order to solve the problem with a shoe that does not wedge, came to the conclusion that it is possible to put two working cylinders on two opposite sides of the brake flap (as on GAZ 24 and many other machines with drum brakes in front and behind). In this case, both pads became wedged, but only when moving forward.

AZLK designers used drum mechanisms with floating shoes. Floating because they do not rely on axles, each on its own, but on a hinge connecting both pads. Therefore, when the pistons move them apart, they are stabilized by forces relative to the drum. And the wedging effect of the active pad is reduced due to the transfer of force through the hinge to the passive pad.

An example of a rear drum brake repair

Everything here is, in general, pretty predictable. The drums are disassembled, as a rule, for two manipulations: replacing the pads or repairing the jammed mechanism itself.

This time we got a car with an inoperative rear right brake mechanism and no parking brake. No brake fluid leaks were found with the experienced eye of the master. Therefore, the probability of a jammed working brake cylinder has increased to 99%. The decision was made immediately. disassembly and more detailed diagnostics.

We unscrewed the nuts and removed the wheel. Fortunately, the drum didn’t get stuck and came off quite easily. The owner of the car felt better when he learned that it was too early to change the pads. But then the bad news came. The parking brake strut has soured, therefore, it is impossible to adjust the location of the pads, and this is the reason for the missing parking brake. Further. The pistons in the slave cylinder were jammed, so the car did not slow down. Verdict. replacement of the slave cylinder. The owner met the difficulties with courage and blessed to begin immediately.

Since it is necessary to replace the slave cylinder, we pinch the brake hose to prevent all brake fluid from leaking out of the circuit. Unscrew the connecting nut and disconnect the brake pipe from the slave cylinder. Using narrow-nose pliers, they removed the lower spring from the brake pads. Then disconnected the parking brake cable from the brake shoe lever.

All the same narrow-nose pliers pressed, turned and removed the hold-down springs of both pads. The springs are fixed on the pin: each has a small support cover with a slot, and the outer end of the pin is flattened. Accordingly, during installation, the spring is compressed, the end of the finger passes through the slot, and to fix the spring, it is turned. But it will be later, now the showdown.

After removing the hold-down springs, both pads can be removed from the brake flap and slave cylinder. Which we do, pushing them apart a little to overcome the force of the upper return spring. Then they unscrewed the mounting bolts and removed the working brake cylinder. They removed the spacer from the pads, cleaned it thoroughly and designed it so that the parking brake could be adjusted. Then they removed the upper return spring.

We set the levers symmetrically

In order for the left and right pads to wear evenly, they must be at the same distance from the rim. Adjustable by spring tension on the brake levers. To equalize the force that returns the left and right brake levers to their original position, use the adjusting bolts located at the base of the levers.

By twisting the bolt clockwise, we tighten the spring, unscrewing it. we loosen it. By pressing and releasing the brake, we check the uniformity of the removal of the pads from the rim. Adjust the cable tension. After adjusting, the brake should instantly respond to the squeeze of the handle and rebound when it is released. If the pads do not move away from the rims, this indicates insufficient tension. On the overtightened cable, the handle will be hard to press, and the sheath may burst.

How do I fit new pads? The location relative to the rim affects the size of the contact area of ​​the pads with it, the braking force and the life of the material. For brake pads with soft rubber surfaces, install them with the leading edge closer to the rim. Brake pads made of rigid material are placed strictly parallel to the surface of rotation of the wheel.

If your bike has cartridge pads, you only need to change the pads. Their position is set with a cotter pin; before removing the old surface, it is removed from the body. Similarly, in the reverse order, insert a new pad and fix it with a cotter pin.

Adjustment of the position and displacement of the shoe housings are carried out by means of a bolt and washers. For accurate fixation, you need to squeeze the brake and set the position of the pads strictly on the surface of the rim.

The last step will be to test the operation of the system in practice, that is, in real driving conditions. As a rule, the V-brake setting is obtained immediately. However, if braking is delayed or the handle does not fully return to its original position, the brakes must be readjusted.
