To adjust, loosen the nut on each shoe slightly so that the shoe can be moved with your fingers, but it will not move. Place the block parallel to the wheel rim, note that it must not touch the tire (the distance between the block and the tire must be at least 1 mm.).

  • If you have soft rubber brake pads, they will deform when braking. Therefore, they must be installed so that the leading edge of these pads is 1 mm. closer to the rim than the rear. To do this, place a 1-1.5 mm thick gasket under the rear parts of the pads before adjusting. For example, a piece of rubber cut from a worn bicycle tube.
  • If you have brake pads with a rigid base that do not deform when braking, you must install strictly parallel to the rim.

Then firmly press the brake lever and tighten the nuts on the pads, carefully watch that they do not change their position at the same time.

Then look at the brake levers. Squeeze and release the brake levers several times, the levers should converge and diverge equally. This can be adjusted with the spring tension screws located at the base of the lever. We turn the adjusting screw on the lever that deflects too little, and unscrew it if the lever deflects too much.

Apply the brake several times while watching the brake levers come together. They should move symmetrically, pressing the pads against both sides of the rim. If this does not happen, adjust the position of the levers using the adjusting bolts.

Setting up mechanical disc brakes

Mechanical disc brakes are a simple and reliable system often found on bicycles of all price categories. Unlike rim brothers, they are not afraid of dirt on the working surface of the disc, developing maximum braking force in any conditions.

A pair of brake pads is installed in the caliper, one of which is pressed against the brake disc when the brake lever is pressed. The second is motionless. Its position is set with a hex wrench or manually.

After loosening the mounting bolts, find the position in which the pads are parallel to the surface of the brake disc, observing the ratio of the clearances shown in the figure:

Install and secure the brake cable to the caliper. Adjust the position of the fixed shoe using a wrench or manually.

If necessary, adjust the position of the movable shoe by changing the tension on the cable. This can be done by rotating the drum on the brake lever. During operation, when the pads are worn and the cable is stretched, tighten the drum, keeping the minimum idle speed of the brake lever.

Setting up hydraulic disc brakes

The most modern type of bicycle brake, previously only fitted to professional bicycles, but now widely used. Unlike mechanical brakes, the hydraulics are easy to install and maintain, and the absence of a stretch cable eliminates the need for frequent adjustments.

To adjust the hydraulic brake, loosen the bolts holding the caliper on the bike frame and press the brake lever firmly several times. Evenly extending pads will center the caliper in relation to the brake disc. Without releasing the handle, tighten the mounting bolts.

The distance between the pads and the surface of the brake disc must be the same on both sides. If one of the pads extends further, loosen the fixing bolts and manually adjust the position of the caliper. Uneven pad coming out is usually associated with dirty brakes and can be observed with prolonged use. In this case, we recommend cleaning and maintenance of the brake at a bicycle workshop.
