Hang The Bike On The Wall With Your Own Hands

Reinforcing the fastening structure

Hang The Bike On The Wall With Your Own Hands

As soon as I had free time, I decided to do a quick analysis to find out if my load calculations were correct. I modeled a wall mount bike hanger and load configuration in practical use and found my initial concerns were correct. The multicolor image attached above is what is called a voltage loop diagram. Lighter areas indicate stress concentration, red indicates the highest values.

Analyzing the diagram, we can conclude that we have two zones that will perceive the greatest stress. The first is the bottom of the cutout into which the bike frame will fit. The second is the top of the joint, where the side walls meet the back wall. The first place does not matter to us, because in order for it to break, the side walls need to fall apart. The second location is much more important as it is the connection between the board attached to the wall and the rest of the mount. To solve this problem, I added corner braces to reinforce the top of the joint.

The last issue to consider is the deflection of the fastener under the applied load, that is, how much the wood of our fastener will bend under load. The stress diagram gives us an idea of what it looks like. You can clearly see how the back panel curves around its center fixed holes. This deviation is greatly exaggerated in the model so that it can be easily seen. To solve the problem of sagging and increase rigidity, I glued a layer of plywood 0.5 cm to the inner wall of the back panel. Plywood will be the best option due to its multidirectional fiber structure (it is better to glue it to how to glue the corner braces).

Grinding and insulating some parts of the fastening

In this step we will sand the surfaces as smoothly as we can and close the sidewalls in order to protect them from subsequent staining. Take your time and close the parts you need as accurately as possible, because this will critically affect the quality of the lines when painting. When painting, the paint will soak through the wood and will try to get under the protective tape and nothing can be done about it.

If you bought dark wood and do NOT use dyes, you can skip this step.

Coloration

In this step, we are decorating the body of the mount. DO NOT speed up the process by applying a large amount of paint in one go, as this will only increase the amount of dye, which will go beyond the line you marked. The paint dries quickly and a rich color can be obtained in two to three passes.

Saw off materials to size

The first step is to plan out the geometry of the mount you are about to create. The shape should be based on your aesthetic preferences and overall functionality. The first factor to consider is the length of the overhang from the wall to provide clearance for the handlebars. The second factor will be the geometry of the cutout that the bike frame will fit into. You can just copy my layout, which is available in the attached photo.

With the design ready in hand, you can start cutting out the body parts that will make up your mount. In my version, I used an old cabinet shelf.

Design improvements

This step is optional. You can simply glue the top panel into a solid piece of wood (simple method). On the other hand, you can use the internal fixing space for storing small items by designing a cover. I decided to integrate the hinges and side aluminum handle.

Wall Mount Installation

Now that the holes have been drilled, you can attach the structure to the wall.

Create a cutout for the bike frame

In this step, we will create a notch that will hold the bike. I created it with a jigsaw and a hacksaw.

We drill installation holes

In this step, we will drill the mounting holes that will hold the mount to the wall. Make sure holes are drilled at right angles and at optimal distance from the bottom and top mounting panels.

Preparing for installation

The mount is now ready for wall mounting. It will be nice if you find a couple of extra free hands. Ask a friend to hold the mount in different locations on the wall, and yourself from the side determine the optimal position. Then ask a friend to hold the bike at different heights and also determine the optimal position.

Once the location and height have been determined, have a friend hold the mount close to the wall, place a level on top and level it. Then open the lid and, passed the pencil through the installation holes, mark the marks on the wall and drill the holes.

Cut a piece of wax paper to fit the back of the mount. This is not a requirement, but just a good idea, as the board will be pressed against the wall for a long period of time. Without this barrier, the clear top varnish can stick to the paint / wallpaper on the wall, making it difficult to remove the fastener in the future without damaging the wall surface.

On a concrete wall

In general, the procedure for fixing to a concrete wall does NOT differ from that for a brick one. However, you should remember about some nuances.

  • You only need to use a concrete drill. This material is stronger than brick, so making a hole in it is more difficult. In addition, concrete is often reinforced with reinforcement. When colliding with it, the brick drill will simply break.
  • The drill should be done carefully. Despite its strength, concrete is easy to crumble. In this case, in order to securely hold the shelf, the crumbled place will have to be restored with plaster.
  • If the concrete wall is too dense and poorly drilled, a concrete nail can be used. It does not require the use of a drill. It is substituted to the necessary surface and several blows are made with a hammer. In this case, you must be extremely careful not to damage the shelf and fasteners.

Shelf mounting methods

There are several common ways to mount a shelf on a wall.

On drywall

If the walls are finished with plasterboard, the decor will not work on the dowel-nail. Indeed, in this material, he simply will not hold out. Use:

  • Regular screws;
  • Butterfly fasteners.

With ordinary screws, everything is simple. they are simply screwed into the plasterboard surface. If they fit too tight, you can drill holes with a drill before starting work in the screw-in points. Their diameter should be 2-3 less than the diameter of the screws used.

The butterfly fastener is a bolt with a drop-down spring-loaded stopper instead of a head. It is used if it is planned to create a load over 5 kilograms on the shelf. A screw simply cannot withstand such a weight. To fix the product with the “butterfly”, you will need to do the following:

  • Attach the selected fasteners to the shelf;
  • Attach it to the wall and draw the location of the holes with a marker or pencil;
  • Drill holes in the wall with a drill in place of the marks;
  • Fold the butterfly stopper and insert it into the hole;
  • When the stopper has opened under the drywall, adjust the length of the threaded protruding part by twisting or unscrewing;
  • Put the holes of the fasteners on the protruding parts of the “butterfly”;
  • Screws complete nuts onto the thread.

How to hang a shelf

Consider the procedure for attaching a shelf to walls made of various materials.

On a brick wall

It is most convenient to hang the shelf on a brick wall using dowel-nails. Here are the steps to take:

  • Screw the selected fasteners to the product;
  • Attach it to the wall and draw the location of the holes with a marker or pencil;
  • Drill holes in the wall with a drill in place of the marks;
  • Insert a dowel into them;
  • Attach a shelf to the wall;
  • Insert the tip of the nail into the dowel through the holes of the fastener;
  • Gently hammer in the nail;
  • When the nail enters the wall almost completely, turn it back with a screwdriver (this is necessary so as not to damage the piece of furniture being mounted with a hammer).

Instead of dowel nails, you can use dowel screws. They are somewhat more reliable. Remember that they must not be hammered in. Screws can only be screwed into the dowel with a screwdriver.

Installing a shelf with hidden fixing

In order to attach a shelf with an invisible fastening system, you will need to perform the following steps:

  • Measure the distance between the shelf holes where the fastener pin will enter;
  • Place fasteners near the wall at the same distance from each other;
  • Draw points in the holes with a marker or pencil;
  • Drill holes in their place with a drill;
  • Insert dowels there;
  • Place fasteners on top of them;
  • Hammer in a nail when very little remains with a screwdriver;
  • Put the shelf on the pin of the fixed hinge.

Bicycle mount on the wall: varieties

Placing a bike on the wall will not only be a great option to free up space, but it can also turn into an original move for making a good interior solution. Today, many companies engaged in the design of houses and apartments and in the manufacture of furniture structures and accessories offer numerous solutions to decorate empty walls with specialized fasteners in the form of racks, hooks and shelves.

Attaching the bike to the wall with hooks avoids contact with the wall and maintains its aesthetic appearance for a long time

Under the ceiling

It is considered the most efficient and rational way of storage. Indeed, a lot of space is freed up in the room for a bicycle, and with the help of a system of brackets, the unit can be raised and lowered without much effort. The method is especially appropriate in rooms with high ceilings.

Hooks: bike storage features

This option is the easiest to implement and operate. All that needs to be done to implement this solution is to screw several hooks into the wall structure.

Selection and installation of cycle hooks

The easiest and cheapest way to secure your bike is to use bike hooks, which are divided into two large groups:

  • Hooks for horizontal hanging;
  • Hooks for vertical hanging.

The wall mount for the bike in the form of hooks for horizontal storage can be one of the following types:

Separate staple hook. For secure storage, two hooks are installed on the wall, and the bike is suspended from the frame;

Individual wall-mounted hooks

Hooks on the frame. This metal structure is characterized by ease of installation, versatility and ease of use. The design allows you to hang bicycles of different sizes without additional devices;

Mounting in the form of hooks mounted on the frame

Vertical hanging hooks:

Ceiling hook. The device is distinguished by the presence of a reinforced base, since it is necessary to withstand the weight of the bicycle for a long time;

Bicycle suspension device from the ceiling

Locking hook for vertical suspension. The bicycle wheel is inserted into a niche and fixed with a latch.

Vertical suspension device

Mounting hooks is NOT difficult. To install you need:

  • In the previously defined area, mark the location of the fixing bolts;
  • Drill holes;

Drilling holes for attaching hooks

Insert a dowel into each hole;

Preparing to attach the hook

Fix the fixing device with bolts.

Hooks can only be installed on sturdy walls made of wood or concrete. Suspension of a bike from drywall or spring ceiling is prohibited.

Purchase and its cost

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a mount.

  • Different materials differ in the level of density, hardness. Before starting installation work, an important criterion is the wall material on which the bike will be stored. On a drywall wall, use a special device to locate beams. Screwing in the screw hook is possible if the wall is made of wood. If the basis for further actions is stone, then a number of drilling tools should be prepared.
  • Choosing the mounting option that does not use a large area.
  • Construction height. Pre-measure it, choose the most suitable option.

Shops that specialize in the sale of bicycles have a wide range of wall mounts. Using the under-ceiling method, the popular Veloangar and TBS SW Bicicle Lift bicycle lifts.

Expensive, difficult to install brackets. Instead, they use shelves, hangers, hooks.

The most affordable are hooks. The cheapest models cost several tens of rubles. If you choose expensive ones from this category, then them. Price fluctuation largely depends on the manufacturer, material of manufacture, main characteristics.

Types of fasteners

The most common mounting method for small spaces is to the ceiling. There are several types of fasteners with which this procedure is carried out.

Common, easy to use and affordable are hooks. Hanging your bike on the wall is easy with this view. Enough to screw the elements with long screws. For the “parallel to the floor” method, this view is quite suitable. When choosing a material of manufacture, focus on quality, a metal hook is better and more reliable in this case.

It is worth noting the bike carrier on the wall (on the rail) gh14. This mechanism is suitable for any wheel diameter, with a high profile. It is capable of supporting up to 25 kg. Ideal for large, heavy bikes. Among the advantages are the comfort of movement, even distribution of the load along the railing.

The universal folding bracket, up to 40 kg, is a powerful metal structure with special rubberized holders. This is a fairly reliable way of storing bicycles. The base has two hooks for storing additional accessories.

To decide how to hang the bike on the wall, use stands. They contribute to complement the design idea of the room. Special hooks for accessories, helmets, jackets are attached to them, which is generally comfortable to use. This type is most acceptable when you have two or more bicycles.

The advantage of the design in its versatility, Adaptability to the design of the room. The stand makes repairs easier.

Among the disadvantages are the ergonomics of the mechanism.

Harmonious and aesthetic as a shelf attachment. Such a choice not only fulfills functional tasks, but also complements the interior. For a more rational use of them, choose multifunctional shelves. In addition to attaching a bicycle to the wall, flowers are placed, there is a place for a little book leisure.

Among the advantages of choice, there is the ability to design a shelf with your own hands.

Less popular types: cabinets and stands, designed for the rear wheel.

The first type is necessary for storing not only the bike on the wall, but also additional items. This choice is suitable for large families. Placement. heated balcony, spacious entrance hall. Among the significant disadvantages are high cost and the need to use a large area.

A smaller design is a stand designed for the rear wheel. This mechanism is reliable, originally from Scandinavia. Minus. the high price of the metal type of fastening, plastic ones are more affordable, but have a short service life.

Mounting methods

After completing all THESE actions, proceed to fixing it. Which way to choose?

Tips for securing hooks, shelves

As a rule, the hooks are fixed with dowels, the hooks themselves act as a screw. The main thing when buying is to find out the installation method, whether there are dowels in the kit. If not, then you need to purchase them of the appropriate size, that is, 1-1.5 mm narrower than the screw. You also need to consider the wall material before you drill. For a more reliable fixing of the supporting structures in the wall, drilling must be done by lifting the drill slightly up and deviating from the perpendicular by 5-10 degrees. Only then there will be no component of the force “turning” out of the wall.

As a result, I would like to remind you of why. it is not mentioned in such articles, namely, in additional functions and opening opportunities in the case of choosing a shelf for horizontal suspension of the bike to the wall.

The competent cyclist will immediately realize that together with the storage he gets an ideal place for washing. Since childhood, all of us have gone through a situation when a bicycle standing on its wheels falls during the process of washing, for which we put it on the bottom. Therefore, you immediately need to choose the height of the attachment so that you can put the stool and, without haste, wash the iron horse when it is securely fixed.

In the event that the bike is mounted vertically, washing is difficult due to the natural flow of liquid down, and the need to start it in the ceiling. In the case of horizontal mounting, the upper, Least dirty parts are washed first, and then the lower, which is very convenient.

Types of fasteners and their installation

So, currently there are the following types of bike mounts to the wall or ceiling:

  • Special wardrobe;
  • Cycle hooks;
  • Racks;
  • Shelves.
