DIY bike rack of different types

For me personally, for a long time, all bicycles seemed to be of the same type, and only a couple of years ago I happened to find out that this is not so, that along with budget options for a standard design, there are mountain bikes, speed bikes, and much more.

So, on a hardtail, that is, a mountain bike, it is good to put a console rack. Since this bike is not designed to carry heavy lifting loads, only the seatpost mounting option is observed here, so other types of luggage racks, although possible in this design, will however be somewhat problematic.

On a bicycle with disc brakes, it is advisable to put a classic rack, which is attached at four points. For better attachment, you can make a curved vertical strut, this is needed in order to bypass the brake caliper.

And, finally, if the bike is equipped with a rim brake structure, then absolutely any type of rack will do here, the only thing you should pay attention to is the size of the wheels, relative to which the center of gravity is selected, the size of the structure.

Now it’s time to get down to business. So, what do we need to make a homemade bike rack?

Bicycle rack: materials and tools

Different materials are used for trunks. steel, aluminum and titanium alloy. Aluminum is cheaper and allows you to get the job done faster, but it is less reliable, durable, titanium is a strong enough material, but too expensive and you will have to tinker with it, thus, the most acceptable option, both for homemade products and for a professional product, is steel. We need about a kilogram of steel with a density of 7.7 g / cm3. rectangular profile, corners and pipes.

Of the tools we need a grinder, a hacksaw for metal, a vice and a welding machine.

Trunk mounting technology

First of all, we choose the height of the future product. A very important point is the determination of the center of gravity, since it depends on this how the loaded bicycle will move on the road, whether it will be stable and manageable, or will fall on its side at the very first turn. As practice shows, the most rational solution is to install the trunk on the same level with the top of the frame.

Having decided on the center of gravity, we draw a diagram of the future product. If you are not strong in drawing, do not worry, I am a teapot in this business, I draw a dog with seven legs. Just in order not to spoil the product during assembly, you need to roughly imagine what size, what configuration it will be and, if possible, adhere to this scheme. Believe me, this is much easier than boiling a trunk by eye.

Now we proceed to the most interesting, crucial moment. We take a steel profile, bend it in a vice to the desired shape. Now we prepare corners and pipes and, cutting off the excess, we cook a perfectly even rectangle shape by welding.

When the product is somehow welded, we just have to install it on the place prepared for it on the bike and fix it. The trunk is welded onto horizontal beams and vertical racks and, for additional strength, is also fastened with bolts and nuts.

The final touch. we overwrite the unsightly seams formed from welding with a file and paint our product. Everything, work is ready. You can praise yourself for the manifestation of will and mind, and put this matter on stream.

But it is worth remembering that on the road, especially if you are used to driving over rough terrain at a good speed, trunk breakdowns may occur, for example, bolts may loosen if tightened poorly. To avoid unpleasant situations, always carry extra bolts, nuts, and insulating tape with you so that, in case of deformation of any part, you can fix it on the go.

In addition, the bike can always break, and this will only mean that the ride is ruined. What to do if you need to exercise, but you don’t want to use a regular bike, and you don’t want to buy an expensive exercise machine for such activities? The conclusion is simple, as always. The best solution is a bike trainer with your own hands.

This option is less easy for independent implementation, but it is much more interesting. Initially, the frame is made, the rear wheel will be located on special rollers. They can be made of different materials, but craftsmen recommend using metal pipes to create additional load. Making them move, and the wheel, accordingly, turn, is much more difficult. Typically, two such rollers are installed for the rear wheel and one for the front. Usually, a material such as rubber is chosen for them. Squeeze rollers that were previously used in the washing machine are perfect.

The axis of each roller fits into bearings that are installed on the cheeks of the assembly. If desired, two parallel footpegs can be installed on the entire structure to make it easier to get off the bike.

Next, you need to purchase a drive belt that attaches to the front and near rear roller.

This type of exercise machine even has the ability to adjust the load. This is done quite simply. For this, a tie rod is installed between the two rear rollers. An increase in the load occurs when its nuts are tightened, and if there is a desire to reduce it, then you just need to loosen them.

Assembly method

A step-by-step version of assembling a bicycle simulator will come in handy for those craftsmen who nevertheless decided to acquire such a simple device. When making it, it is better to enlist additional help, since initially not everyone will be able to accurately repeat the entire mechanism.

  • Cut out the base from the plywood board. In this case, it is important that the thickness of the bar is at least 20 millimeters. The extension should be cut from a thicker board. They can be fastened both with high-quality glue and thanks to metal corners. It should be noted that the latter method will be more reliable.
  • Using plywood pieces in the form of a triangle, the entire rack should be fastened.
  • The resulting platform must necessarily be fixed with metal platforms. It is important that at the same time there are stiffeners, which can be corners made of aluminum. Two holes are made in the racks, after which they are bent by 20%. The rest of the posts with one hole must be bent 60%.
  • The front wheel is removable, but the rear wheel should only be loosened, and the flap under it should be removed completely. A staple stand attaches to the rear of the wheel. It is important not to forget to put on the washers from the side of the side brackets, after which the nuts should be tightened. The front wheel fork attaches to the rack with an extension. The end of each rack should be additionally extended with nuts, while observing a distance of 20 centimeters from them to the wheel.
  • It will be too easy to spin the wheels as the bike will be empty. To complicate the task, you need to additionally install videos. Their installation is carried out under, directly, the tire, while the effect of artificial braking should be produced. The most reliable way to fix the rollers is on the brackets. Longitudinal slots are better suited. The metal pad is attached to the roller bracket, and they are secured together with the platform.
  • Additional load can also be generated by the brake. They will have a strong impact on the wheel. You can do it yourself, using a bar, two crossbars, a load, a roller and a holder. The crossbar is mounted to the wheel fork. In this case, a screw must be passed through the holes in them. It is thanks to him that the holder necessary for this purpose is attached.
  • After the work carried out, the end of the rod is inserted into it, then fastening is carried out with a screw. He will be the axis. The roller, which has a small longitudinal cut, is installed at the very bottom of the rod, the weights should be fixed at its end. During the entire period of using the bike rack, it will gradually press against the wheel, braking it in this way. It will take significant effort to accelerate the bike to a higher speed.

Benefits

In addition to the ability not to spend large sums on the purchase of an exercise bike (and a good device costs decently), its low weight also turns on to the positive aspects. Thanks to this, the bike rack can be moved to any room and practiced there.

You can adapt your old bike for this purpose, as well as a recently purchased one. Already with the arrival of heat, it will be possible to collect it again and go for a walk.

It is important to note that such exercises will still have a beneficial effect on the figure. Of course, it will not be as effective as driving on this vehicle over uneven terrain, but still such an alternative is better than nothing at all.

If it was decided to lose weight in this way and not spend money on buying things that later become unnecessary, then it is worth considering that the design is not calculated for too large people. Pegs can bend altogether, further damaging the bike’s structure, not to mention how many injuries a person can get when falling;
  • Efficiency. Experienced users will not like this “simulator” due to its low efficiency. Indeed, on a special simulator, you can choose the optimal load, but here you just get mechanical pedaling, which gives a lower result;
  • Some people still won’t be able to make it on their own if they don’t know at least a little about the technical characteristics.

We take a square pipe, make segments of a given size from it, and then we weld the frame from them.

Now we will make a drawbar, that is, a knot, or a device through which the trailer is attached to the bike. Materials will require the same square pipe and a strip of 25×4 mm. This unit is attached to a tube, fixed vertically on the frame, using 2 tie bolts.

We drill a hole in the 2 plates that form the clamp, and insert the upper bolt into it. The lower one is attached perpendicularly, we pass it through the lower clamp and screw it into the hole, which we drill in the vertical tube. Several such holes can be drilled, then the drawbar can be positioned at different heights, adapting to a specific bike. over, if you have several of them.

We start making the platform. We have declared MDF, but, perhaps, it is better if the material of the platform is waterproof. After all, if the MDF gets wet, it will crumble, and this in this case will not suit us. It is better to take film faced plywood if you have.

Since making an electric motor for a bicycle with your own hands is far from an easy task, this stage of making an electric bike comes down, basically, to the search for a finished product from which this actual engine can be removed.

First, I would like to warn you that most of the electric motors that can be adapted for this case are powered by 220 V AC.

Accordingly, to provide them with power, an impressive battery or a system of multiple batteries is required. And this, in turn, significantly increases the weight and dimensions of your vehicle.

So, people who believe that buying a ready-made solution is, at least not interesting, ask the primary and most important question: which engine is better to use??

The most popular option for solving this problem is an engine from an electric household lawn mower (trimmer). However, do not forget that lawn mowers are available with engines that have different powers, which is very important for installing them on a bike.

For example, a low-power electric motor will not move the vehicle. you need to slightly help it with the pedals. And while driving uphill, you will have to help the electric bike with pedals.

But if you take a more powerful electric motor, then you can rest your legs even during climbs and start from a place without helping with the pedals. Of course, the more powerful the electric motor, the greater its weight.

Bicycles are sometimes equipped with electric motors from electric saws or even washing machines. Although it all comes down, in fact, to the same thing. the choice of parameters such as power, weight and dimensions.

The advantage of this type of engine is that it produces much less noise than gasoline engines. An e-bike does not make a lot of noise, while a bike with a gas engine on will keep you from hearing birds singing.

Electric motors can be used completely different, it all depends on what exactly was lying around in your attic, or what happened to you at the flea market.

BIKE MOTOR KIT

Today, a motorcycle kit for a bicycle is not uncommon. There are a number of different bike-mounted motors on sale. Usually, the motorcycle kit provides universal mounts that fit most modern bikes, but there are motors designed only for certain bike models.

SINGLE-CYLINDER TWO-STROKE MOTOR (48 CM3 DISPLACEMENT) FOR ROAD BIKES

This motorcycle kit is attached to the trunk over the rear wheel. Rotational motion from the engine is transmitted to the rear wheel of the bike. Sometimes the kit is installed over the front wheel of the bike. For this case, engine power is transferred to the front wheel.

The motorcycle kit is presented in several modifications: the engine displacement ranges from 1 to 2 hp. It should be noted that the maximum speed of the most powerful engine is 50 km / h.

The motorcycle kit under consideration has a built-in muffler and a fuel tank, the ability to quickly dismantle the engine, and a fairly low weight (about 5 kg).

This is one of the positive qualities, however, there are also negative points, and quite significant: the motorcycle kit has a fairly high cost, the quality of the drive device raises many questions, the aesthetic component of the engine is far from perfect (as if they had somehow installed the motor from a lawn mower with their own hands).

YAMAHA BIKE MOTOR

Even bicycle motors are produced by a well-known manufacturer. It is worth noting that these engines have much better technical and quality characteristics than the moto kits mentioned earlier. These motors can be up to 4 hp, which is enough to not pedal assist.

But the cost of such a toy is quite impressive. Today Yamaha is gradually switching to the manufacture of bicycle electric motors, and in the near future gasoline engines from this manufacturer will be in short supply (there are already few of them).

TWO-STROKE GAS BIKE MOTOR

What China does not produce. The new invention of the Celestial Empire was the two-stroke bicycle gas engine, the volume of which is 48 cm3. It is not particularly different from the motorcycle kit described earlier, except that the gas tank is replaced with a gas cylinder.

The rationale of this invention is questioned, since the gasoline engine has low consumption. Naturally, you will not receive any guarantees of safety when driving on a dubiously assembled gas cylinder.
