To create a seat with your own hands you will need materials:

  • pipes of different diameters (this can be a frame from an old children’s bicycle);
  • seat;
  • metal channels;
  • welding machine;
  • drill;
  • long bolts.

Before welding pipes and cutting elements, it is advisable to draw up a drawing with exact dimensions. The drill makes holes for fasteners in a row, for the possibility of height adjustment.

The saddle is screwed to the top edge of the T-piece. Next, it is installed on the bike. To do this, the seat must be attached to the frame and on the vertical channels, tighten the bolts from the bottom and top of the frame tube.

A homemade bicycle seat for a child will be less safe than a professional seat. The main task of the parent is to be attentive on the road and control the child.

DIY Plywood Child Bike Seat

When riding a bike with your baby, you should try to avoid pits and bumps and sections of the road with heavy traffic. It is also advisable not to travel to places where you can meet stray dogs, which often rush onto a vehicle and can frighten a child. When traveling with a small passenger, you must comply with the speed limit and other traffic rules.

How to make a child seat with your own hands

Making your own bicycle child seat is an additional solution if you have the right material, tools and skillful hands.

Making a bicycle seat with your own hands is not an easy job. Therefore, it is necessary to consider how to attach the device to the bike and take into account the safety of the child while riding. But first you need to choose the original version of the bike seat. You can use an old children’s chair, high chair. Drill holes in the seat, and use a metal plate, washers and nuts to attach the bike seat to the trunk. Sew the seat to make the passenger soft and comfortable. Fasten seat belts if they were not provided on the seat. To protect the legs, use the plates on the sides of the wheel or the wire that braids the fixed rods.

Your child’s safety while riding on this hand-made device is entirely up to you, so you shouldn’t cheat or use flimsy material.

Child bike seat on the frame at the front

The seat is attached to the bike frame or steering column. This puts the kid between the handlebars and the bike rider.

  • parents completely control the child, can freely communicate with him while driving, monitor his actions;
  • the child feels safe, knowing that the parent is sitting behind his back, and therefore calmly endures cycling;
  • the trunk remains free and can be filled with useful things;
  • the armchair provides protection for the legs and body;
  • the seat is equipped with seat belts;
  • a child seat on a bicycle frame has a high backrest, which is convenient for fixing the head;
  • creates a shock-absorbing effect.
  • children’s bicycle seats on the front frame. small-sized seats that can withstand loads of up to 15 kilograms. As the baby grows up (after reaching 3 years of age), the chair will have to be replaced;
  • it is difficult to select the optimal model, especially if the seat is necessary for installation on a sports bike;
  • creates inconvenience for the cyclist. interferes with pedaling and reduces the quality of the road view.

Front or back?

The baby can be seated in front of you or behind you. Tiny children are put in front, so it is better to control them, and they are fascinating, because the front has an excellent view.

For the convenience of parents, you should choose a chair that is easy to install, many manufacturers indicate this as an advantage in their models. You can ride right away, as soon as the baby learns to sit well, this happens at the age of 6-9 months, and the frame can easily withstand the weight of children at this age. It is recommended to be transplanted behind the back when children interfere with visibility and taxiing, this is about 3 years.

Consider the features of each type of child bicycle seat.

When choosing a chair on the frame, pay attention that the frame itself is not sloping, no wires or cables should pass along it.

When is the best time to transfer children to the back seat? Usually when the child’s feet reach the center of the front wheel. The rear seat is mounted on the seat tube or on the trunk. Chair models can have sleep functions, reclining backrests and ventilation holes. To watch your baby behind the back, it is recommended to make a mount for rear-view mirrors.

Bicycle frame child seat

Child seat on a bicycle frame: types of seats, safety

It is better to teach a child by example, and not with words. it is better remembered this way. That is why, if you want to introduce your child to cycling, travel with him.

Such a device as a child seat on a bicycle frame will make traveling easier for parents and more interesting for kids. You can rest assured that the trips will be safe if the children are in the bicycle seat, the bindings are fastened, and the head is protected by a helmet.

Driving without danger

When it comes to children and riding, the first thing they think about is how safe it is for the child, therefore the helmet. it is an integral part of cycling with children.

Before riding, check whether all fastenings are secure and hold well, always fasten the child with seat belts. Modern manufacturers produce adjustable soft 3 and 5-point belts. In models for the trunk, the child’s legs are fixed on the footrests with perforated plastic straps so that they do not accidentally fall into the wheel spokes, and the footrests themselves can be adjustable.

An accessory such as a child seat on a bicycle will allow you to arrange walks for very young riders.

How to paint a bike with your own hands

Over time, the paint on the bike fades, wears off or falls off in small pieces. Also, the frame is not protected from scratches, which only provoke damage to the paint layer. First of all, the appearance of the bike itself deteriorates. But this is still half the trouble, the main problem of the lack of paint areas lies in the appearance of rust, which mercilessly destroys the still undamaged material.

When flaws are not only visible to the naked eye, but also directed deep into the destruction of metal, an urgent bicycle painting is necessary. Otherwise, repairs will be more expensive. What is usually painted on a bike? First of all, it is a supporting structure. a frame. Painting is also used for wheels, less often for steering wheel and trunk.

Drawing through stencils

In the previous chapter, we touched on the topic of a single color bicycle frame. If desired, you can apply patterns, symbols or inscriptions. For these purposes, you can pick up bright stickers. The good thing about this option is that you don’t have to mess with the paint again. The reverse side of the coin of this method: you may not find the desired pattern, the stickers wear out quickly and spoil the appearance.

You can use stencils to properly paint your bike frame. It is quite possible to make them with your own hands from a thin flexible sheet of rubber or transparent adhesive film. You can draw the contours on a sheet of material through a carbon copy. Then the pattern is carefully cut out. To achieve clarity, paint stencils are tightly pressed against the surface of the frame or glued, if it is a film. The drawing should be sprayed as carefully as possible so that the paint does not flow out of the contours.

The disadvantages of non-sticky stencils appear during drying, since you have to keep it for 20. 30 minutes until the paint grabs at the edges. On the other hand, adhesive films that are convenient in this regard can leave marks around the design.

Bicycle frame painting, work sequence

The idea of painting a bike frame can come from several reasons:

  • a large amount of rust;
  • many small scratches, because of which the large looks ugly;
  • tired of the color.

The frame takes up the most paint, so it is recommended to stock up on it. Distribution in everyday life was obtained by applying paint from spray cans and using a spray. A better option is to powder paint the bike, but it will be problematic to do it on your own, so we will focus on the two previous methods.

  • three cans of paint, or 400 grams of paint and a spray bottle;
  • sandpaper (grain size is selected depending on the depth of damage);
  • primer;
  • composition for degreasing;
  • additionally. tape for sealing areas that do not need to be painted.

First, the frame needs to be freed: the wheels, saddle, brakes, trunk, etc. are removed. It will also be good to dismantle the steering wheel and connecting rods. It is better not to remove the latter if you are not sure that you will be able to hang it back.

The bike frame is thoroughly cleaned and suspended or placed on a flat surface. The next step is sanding. This is done with the help of emery; special attention is paid, of course, to chips and deep scratches. Sanding is carried out until the surface is as smooth as possible!

After leveling, the defective areas are degreased. This will make the paint better and smoother. In addition, rust micro-particles are removed during degreasing. This is especially true of an old bike in poor condition. After removing grease and dirt, you can safely prime the frame.

A primer for bikes, in principle, is not an obligatory procedure, however, many years of experience in painting any metal surfaces show that without a special binder, that is, a primer, the paint will very quickly begin to peel off and fall off. We don’t need this, so we primed!

The composition is applied in thin layers, evenly over the entire painted part of the frame. The optimal number of layers is three, but two may be enough. It is possible to apply primers both from a spray can and with a spray bottle. Complete drying usually lasts several hours, for more details see the instructions. When choosing a composition, it should be borne in mind that a primer for steel surfaces is not suitable for an aluminum frame.

Dyeing is the most time consuming process. Particular attention is paid to the amount of paint when painting bicycle frames. If a leak appears, you do not need to wash it by hand. it will only get worse. An even distribution of excess over the area can be achieved by tilting the frame in the direction opposite to the direction of the leak. It is better to paint without haste and do not overdo it with the amount, on the contrary, it is recommended to apply paint in smaller quantities. It will be much faster to finish painting than to remove unnecessary.

We do not save on the drying time of the frame. Ideally, we wait for a day when the paint sits firmly on the metal. Only after that we put on the wheels and body kits. You can check the strength with a slight movement of a dull knife. If it slips easily, then the paint is dry.

And another tip: when switching to a fundamentally different color, the staining procedure may need to be repeated. Another option: paint the frame pipes first white, and then apply the desired.

Features of coloring wheels: surfaces of rims and spokes

Bicycle wheel painting is not as popular as frame painting, but it is also quite common in the field of home bike repair. With prolonged driving, the rims are often damaged, and defects such as eights after correction will definitely cause paint chips. In general, a terrible rim is ugly and unsafe. Remember that corrosion does not sleep!

The sequence for rim painting is exactly the same as for frame painting:

  • surface cleaning;
  • sanding;
  • degreasing;
  • padding;
  • applying a layer of paint composition;
  • drying.

The painting options are exactly the same: cans and a compressor spray gun. You can also apply an airbrush.

However, there are still some peculiarities. After removing the wheel, insulate the braking surface with tape. This is important for a mountain bike that is equipped with rim brakes only. Paint in the area of brake pad travel will reduce braking performance and may damage the pads themselves. The same applies to drawings, which will be a pity to paint over. Be sure to dismantle the tires.

The wheel itself is not important to disassemble, although in general it is still recommended to separate the rim from the hub for painting the rim, that is, pull out the spokes.

When sanding, be careful: the wheels are thinner than frame pipes, with intensive cleaning with coarse sandpaper, the metal will rub. The wheels will require a longer drying time due to the rounded rim shape. But in terms of color, everything is much simpler here compared to the frame, and one painting is enough. To preserve the result for a long time, a thin layer of varnish can be applied a little later.

At home, you can change the paint not only on the rim, but also on the spokes. To do this, however, they will have to be removed, or rather, to disassemble the whole wheel in general. An alternative and quick option for painting the spokes is replacement. If, nevertheless, there is a desire to tinker, then it will be faster to do this with a spray. It is not worth painting each separately, you can spray paint on all the knitting needles at once, periodically turning them over. Dry them in a standing position. If the processing of the spokes is carried out together with the painting of the rim, then the spokes are painted first, and then the wheel itself.

The updated bike looks like the one you just bought, moreover, it will ride much better and last longer. You may first have to devote too much time to painting, but if you have to face it again, previous experience will help you get the job done faster.

Types of bicycle seats

Before buying a child bike seat or making it yourself, you need to understand their varieties.

By the type of installation, the seats are:

  • Front, equipped with a frame mount. These seats are mounted on the frame in such a way that the baby is between the adult and the steering wheel. In this position, it is protected from road jolts and winds accompanying driving at high speed. Also, the child has a good view, and the parent can monitor his reaction to what is happening around. The child seat for installation on a bicycle frame has disadvantages:
  • too active a child can interfere with bike control;
  • low level of security;
  • the ability to roll a child weighing up to 15 kg (corresponding to the age of about 2.5 years);
  • the difficulty of selecting a chair for a specific frame.
  • Rear seats for installation on the trunk. This type of chair is universal. Has obvious advantages over others:
  • holds back well;
  • withstands the weight of a child up to 25 kg;
  • footrests help avoid swelling.

The only drawback of the rear seats, which are installed on the trunk of the bike, can be considered low shock absorption.

  • Seats for attachment to the seatpost. They are considered the most comfortable, so they are most often found on the road. The seatpost on a bicycle has the following advantages:
  • versatility of fasteners;
  • high carrying capacity;
  • the passenger does not interfere with the view of the road;
  • high level of security.

Due to the design and installation location, the child seat will limit the child’s visibility, which may not be to the liking of a toddler who likes to look at the road. Also, it will be difficult for a parent and child to communicate with each other while driving.

When choosing a seat, you need to take into account the design nuances of the vehicle, the age and complexion of the child. If you wish, you can make a child seat for any bike with your own hands.

We design a child bike seat ourselves

Joint walks with parents give the child the opportunity to actively develop and be interested in the world around him. However, the space for exploring is often limited to the playground. The way out can be cycling, which combines useful sports exercises, being in the fresh air and development.

In a family of cyclists, a toddler quickly takes an interest in a bicycle, despite the fact that it is difficult for him to manage it on his own until three years old. The child’s curiosity needs to be encouraged, so many parents decide to take him with them on bike rides.

A safe ride with the required level of comfort for a child can be ensured by equipping him with a separate seat. a child seat on a bicycle. This accessory allows you to take your baby with you on pleasure trips and on business.

Before welding pipes and cutting elements, it is advisable to draw up a drawing with exact dimensions. The drill makes holes for fasteners in a row, for the possibility of height adjustment.

Elements are consistently manufactured: steering wheel, supporting structure, footboards.

The saddle is screwed to the top edge of the T-piece. Next, it is installed on the bike. To do this, the seat must be attached to the frame and on the vertical channels, tighten the bolts from the bottom and top of the frame tube.

Which bikes are better?

We are now talking about such a thing as a bicycle frame. This is indirectly connected with the appearance of himself. This is logical, since road, mountain, sports bikes are different from each other. But there are also more specific types. like BMX, etc. It is impossible to say unequivocally which model is better. The bicycle frame (its design), wheels, the number of gears and speeds. all this is very different from model to model. Accordingly, you need to select according to certain characteristics. The latter include the location, frequency of travel, and the desired speed and agility. There is no need to talk about the need for jumps and even more tricks, since this is already a rather specific area.

Technical details

An important aspect of riding a two-wheeled friend is taking care of him. That is, the repair of bicycle frames, in principle, takes a lot of time if problems do happen.

The most varied problems can arise. this is due to a rather complex design and a lot of attached parts. However, you can figure out almost everything on your own. In general, the following is a list of what problems may arise, as well as the procedures that need to be carried out.

No clipper disc brake trim. This causes serious problems. for example, uneven and rapid wear of the pads.

Correction of mechanical damage. any collision can lead to the fact that some of the pipes bend, leaving you unable to drive.

Head tube facing. if not done, some difficulties may arise with precise control.

In addition, you may want to improve your transportation in some way. This is usually done in two ways. In the first case, people attach various useful things to the frame. These include a bottle cage, pump mount, fenders, trunk, and so on. The second option is tuning and painting. These are airbrushing, illumination and so on. But this is already a topic for a separate article.

So, we figured out how to make a bike frame with your own hands at home.

bike, frame, seat

Why the right frame is important?

The point here is that this is the supporting part of the structure, on the basis of which everything else is assembled. A bicycle frame is a necessary thing to determine the size of the wheels, and the type of transport in general. In addition, the material from which it is made also plays a role. There is a direct dependence of weight, price, as well as areas of application. However, there are other, less noticeable, but also significant factors. like selection by height, weight, etc.

Manufacturing subtleties: geometry

A bicycle frame can be made in a variety of ways. This will primarily affect the way you sit on the bike. Naturally, this is how the type of future transport is determined. whether it will be road, mountain or sports. For all three, this characteristic can be quite low, since air resistance is an important aspect of the trip. Nevertheless, urban options are often made with a high seating position, because this is enough for trips to the park or even to work.

A common option today is a cruiser. Here it is worth paying special attention to the dimensions of the bicycle frames, since the whole structure is based on the fact that there are no loads on the back and arms at all. To achieve such a result, as you understand, is unrealistic. and therefore everything is simply reduced to a minimum. The design of such iron horses is borrowed from American choppers.

What does the frame geometry affect??

As mentioned earlier, this part of the structure is key, since it is the load-bearing support for everything in general. That is, the location in space of wheels, pedals, steering wheel and saddle is determined precisely by the design of the frame. Naturally, adjustment can be carried out, but only the lightest. if you make everything too mobile, then reliability will greatly decrease, and therefore such options are rarely resorted to.

Bike frame dimensions are very important for comfort. All people are different, and therefore it is rather difficult to make a bicycle for someone specific. separate workshops are engaged in this. In this case, the geometry is adjusted so as not to create awkwardness or inconvenience during control.

TIG welding

Hand-held device for working with aluminum alloys and light metals. Welding is helped by a tungsten electrode and argon, the device operates on alternating current and leaves behind a very thin seam.

Additionally, it has the following advantages:

  • Thin type metal connection, which is great for bicycle frames;
  • Easy flow control;
  • No splashing.
  • Obligatory experience of similar work and compliance with safety measures;
  • Although the seams are thin, it takes a long time to connect;
  • There is a gas cylinder nearby, which increases the risks;
  • To improve the quality of the joint, another alloy is applied to the edges of the metal to strengthen the grip.

Bicycle frame by height

It has already been said above that dimensions greatly affect the comfort of use. So, the size is the parameters of the length and height of the structure, according to which it is assembled. That is, if you increase or decrease the size of the frame, then the length (and sometimes the diameter) of the seatpost, upper and lower tubes will change.

It is worth noting that the correct definition of such a parameter as size is mandatory for everyday use of a bicycle. A comfortable ride in this case is a must. this will help to avoid back pain, as well as unnecessary stress on the limbs, but in cases of sports competition or professional training, an ideal bike is generally required. It’s all about distance and time in the saddle. any discomfort will eventually turn into real pain, or even serious injury. Factory bicycles differ in size markings. everything is exactly the same as in clothes. from XS to XL. However, this is not always an exact science, therefore do-it-yourself assembly remains a common alternative.

Reflector manufacturing.

I first cut out two 12 ” aluminum strips and sanded one side with 400 grit sandpaper. Then he polished them to a mirror shine with a trefoil mixture. Finish sanding down one inch on each side and center to ensure good adhesion to the epoxy.

I sanded the surfaces of the square lamp tips with a sander drum. At the same time, I removed the acrylic almost to the very lamp and made the surface rough.

Then I glued the lamps to the reflectors using epoxy, applying it to the center of the lamp.

Fluorescent backlight testing.

Let there be light! This is not visible from the photographs, but the fluorescent backlight turned out to be very bright. Even brighter and unnecessary. And at the same time, she does not blind anyone on the road.

The blue looks impressive, although the green bulbs should shine even brighter. White lamps are also very bright, but they will not be so conspicuous. It doesn’t matter which color you choose. any color will look great. With this backlight, you will drive through the night streets like a UFO!

On a track bike, this light didn’t evoke as much emotion as it did on a tall bike. Although, in any case, people paid attention to me. It feels like you’re flying on a glowing carpet! This is really cool!

After the epoxy is completely cured and the batteries are connected to the Molex connector, it’s time to secure the fluorescent backlight with clasps. I used thin RipWrap fasteners. I bought a set of 45 fasteners for 6. So first I needed to separate them. Old Velcro or plastic straps may also work.

I decided to first install the lights on my track bike, which has the smallest clearance between the frame and the road. If it can be installed on this bike, then it will become even more so on any other bike. Although the commercial Down Low Glow is more reliable, because of its size it certainly wouldn’t fit on this bike. This is another reason why I decided to make my own bicycle lighting and not buy a ready-made one.

It will take you about five minutes to secure the backlight with zip ties.

Homemade fluorescent lights on the bike frame

This project allows you to do-it-yourself fluorescent lighting on a bicycle or any other vehicle using inexpensive and readily available cold cathode lamps. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, installing fluorescent lamps on the bike frame allows you to increase your visibility on the road at night. Very often asked to be photographed with me and my stylish bike.

Attaching the seals.

While the epoxy was curing, I cut out some squares of foam and glued them with contact cement to the back of the lamps.

How did the homemade lighting project begin?

The first time I tried to mount the lights to a bicycle frame was when I simply secured the cold cathode tube to plastic clips and powered it from my lead-acid battery. It worked out pretty well, but after a few days the lamp broke due to deformation caused by the plastic clips. These lamps have rather thin glass, which must be handled with great care.!

I decided to install a polished aluminum strip behind the lamps, which would reinforce the acrylic body and act as a reflector, directing the light downward. And the most important thing is that the clamps in this case do not directly contact the lamps, do not deform them and do not obscure the light. Also, the lead-acid battery did not suit me at all, since almost three kilograms of lead can still be imagined on a large heavy bike, but not on a light stylish bike.
