A primer for bikes, in principle, is not an obligatory procedure, however, many years of experience in painting any metal surfaces show that without a special binder, that is, a primer, the paint will very quickly begin to peel off and fall off. We don’t need this, so we primed!

The composition is applied in thin layers, evenly over the entire painted part of the frame. The optimal number of layers is three, but two may be enough. It is possible to apply primers both from a spray can and with a spray bottle. Complete drying usually lasts several hours, for more details see the instructions. When choosing a composition, it should be borne in mind that a primer for steel surfaces is not suitable for an aluminum frame.

Dyeing is the most time consuming process. Particular attention is paid to the amount of paint when painting bicycle frames. If a leak appears, you do not need to wash it by hand. it will only get worse. An even distribution of excess over the area can be achieved by tilting the frame in the direction opposite to the direction of the leak. It is better to paint without haste and do not overdo it with the amount, on the contrary, it is recommended to apply paint in smaller quantities. It will be much faster to finish painting than to remove unnecessary.

We do not save on the drying time of the frame. Ideally, we wait for a day when the paint sits firmly on the metal. Only after that we put on the wheels and body kits. You can check the strength with a slight movement of a dull knife. If it slips easily, then the paint is dry.

And another tip: when switching to a fundamentally different color, the staining procedure may need to be repeated. Another option: paint the frame pipes first white, and then apply the desired.

I first cut out two 12 ” aluminum strips and sanded one side with 400 grit sandpaper. Then he polished them to a mirror shine with a trefoil mixture. Finish sanding down one inch on each side and center to ensure good adhesion to the epoxy.

On a track bike, this light didn’t evoke as much emotion as it did on a tall bike. Although, in any case, people paid attention to me. It feels like you’re flying on a glowing carpet! This is really cool!

Clasps.

After the epoxy is completely cured and the batteries are connected to the Molex connector, it’s time to secure the fluorescent backlight with clasps. I used thin RipWrap fasteners. I bought a set of 45 fasteners for 6. So first I needed to separate them. Old Velcro or plastic straps may also work.

I decided to first install the lights on my track bike, which has the smallest clearance between the frame and the road. If it can be installed on this bike, then it will become even more so on any other bike. Although the commercial Down Low Glow is more reliable, because of its size it certainly wouldn’t fit on this bike. This is another reason why I decided to make my own bicycle lighting and not buy a ready-made one.

How did the homemade lighting project begin?

The first time I tried to mount the lights to a bicycle frame was when I simply secured the cold cathode tube to plastic clips and powered it from my lead-acid battery. It worked out pretty well, but after a few days the lamp broke due to deformation caused by the plastic clips. These lamps have rather thin glass, which must be handled with great care.!

I decided to install a polished aluminum strip behind the lamps, which would reinforce the acrylic body and act as a reflector, directing the light downward. And the most important thing is that the clamps in this case do not directly contact the lamps, do not deform them and do not obscure the light. Also, the lead-acid battery did not suit me at all, since almost three kilograms of lead can still be imagined on a large heavy bike, but not on a light stylish bike.
