How to make and install yourself
If you have a sheet of rubber, linoleum or leatherette of a suitable color, it will not be difficult to cut the linings on the fenders. The basic requirements when installed on full-size and short wings sound the same. the product should not be too long and protrude far into the wing above the mount.
As the length increases, the vibration of even stiff material increases, and the mudguard will touch the tire on the go. If you measure too much on the other side, the mudguard will bend back and look ugly when attached externally or hit the wheel again when attached.
Traditionally, mudguards expand from the base. But you can break this rule with your own hands. make straight or pointed products:
You need to cut the material from the outside, which will be facing outward.
To make mudguards out of hard plastic, the material must first be softened so that it is easier to smooth and cut. A construction hair dryer will help here. its air flow is enough for plastic. When the material has become a little pliable, carefully cut the workpiece with scissors.
The general algorithm for making mud flaps with your own hands:
- Make a drawing on paper in full size.
- Attach the blank to the paper and cut the overlay with the tips of scissors.
- Sharpen uneven edges gently with a penknife.
- The mudguard is ready, now we are going to install it on the wing.
Depending on the type of attachment, the mudguards can be screwed on with one, two or three bolts. We purchase bolts and nuts of the required dimensions in advance. To prevent the bolt from pressing on the wing, it is advisable to put a washer on it. We mark the holes taking into account the distances between the holes on the wing.
The only thing left is to make a hole. It is better to use a drill with a suitable drill or hole punch. It is not recommended to pierce with scissors or an awl. over time, the edges will bulge, and the mudguard will “ride” along the wing.

It must be understood that such accessories are not always supplied with the bike, but there are quick-detachable and stationary models to choose from, which differ in the principle of fastening, design and, of course, in the field of application.
Do not forget about the design features of conventional road bikes, which can only be fitted with stationary fenders. The latter can be made of plastic, but with a similar feather mounting system.
What installation tool is needed:
- screwdriver (preferably typesetting model);
- socket or box wrench for 9-10.
The list is small, but work has to be done only with finished products that have original fastening systems in the kit.
How to install quick release fenders on a sports bike?
You need to start by assembling the front wing, which is based on a metal plate. Wear parts of the wing on one side and the other. The one that is more authentic is installed on the lower part.
It turns out a blank of a collapsible wing. To mount it on the bike frame, you need to take the bolts and nuts from the kit. When finished, this is a spacer. To assemble it, a washer is put on the bolt and threaded from the bottom of the metal plate. The two pieces of spacer must be placed on the side of the bolt that came out.
There is already a tapped thread on one part of the spacer, so it is simply fixed.
The next step is to find the hub on the bottom of the front fork. Some manufacturers may mask it with a plastic plug, which will prevent dirt from entering during operation without a protective wing.
In our case, it is in this bushing that the wing should be installed. By tightening the screw threaded through the previously mentioned mounting plate, the expansion of the spacer can be adjusted so that it can be adjusted to the inner diameter of the sleeve. If, after maximum twisting, the width of the spacer turns out to be insufficient, use an additional expander, which, almost always, comes with the purchased accessory.
Having achieved the desired seal in the bushing, using a screwdriver, screw the mounting bolt as tightly as possible.
Installing the rear quick-release wing
In fact, this is a continuation of the aforementioned work, but with regard to the rear wheel. You need to prepare the rear wheel. For this, a small set of spare parts remains.
The square nuts are inserted into the grooves of the plastic clamp on both sides. They are needed to secure long bolts. The latter are threaded through the remaining extension piece and twisted, thereby creating an attachment of the desired length.
Next, you need to take the wing and place the holder groove on it. It is also secured with a screw and washer. Take the next part and insert a threaded pin into it. We fasten the resulting workpiece to the base, where the screw was previously removed.
The next step is to secure the two-piece clamp to the seatpost. To do this, release the frame clamp and pull the saddle with the pin out. The clamp itself is fixed with two screws.
The resulting blank with a sheer wing is installed in the received place using the screw remaining in the kit. To fix it, use a hex key, which is also included in the kit. Tighten only by hand, without using additional tubes.
The rear fender can be adjusted in height in two places. at the base and the place where it is attached to the yoke. Wing height adjustments are based on a slope that will prevent water from getting on your clothing.
These plastic quick-release fenders work well in mud. The distance from the fender to the tire prevents clogging of dirt and, as a result, immobilization of the bike.
Installation of ready-made plastic fenders type PM-05
They are suitable for bicycles with wheel sizes from 24″ up to 26″ inches. Everyone starts from the back. The bracket is placed on the seat post. Then the front part of the wing is snapped into it.
Next, you need to take the bracket, screw and nut. We pass the screw into the hole, and on the outside we attach the bracket. You need to fix the structure tightly, lifting it as much as possible to the top.
I squeeze the edges of the installed bracket so that its edges lie in the grooves. It is quite simple to do this, even with one hand. The depth is chosen based on personal preference. The mount is based on a ratchet.
Now take the front fender and the screw and nut. The front fender is also installed with a hole, but not in the crown, but in the gorilla of the fork. For convenience, you also need to release the brakes.
The screw is threaded into the inner side. On the reverse side, we put on the wing, throw in the nut and fix it. You do not need to fully tighten the nut. For convenience, you can grab it with a spanner wrench, and screw it with a screwdriver.
The next thing to do is adjust the wing height. This is to prevent the protector from rubbing against it. Otherwise, when reversing, there is a high probability of product damage.
At the end of the installation, the screw is tightened completely. That, in fact, is the whole process of attaching the front and rear fenders. These fenders are perfect for road bikes, as the distance from the tread to the fender is minimal. Such an installation will almost completely protect against water ingress on clothes.
Installation of stationary metal wings
The metal stationary model is also installed on the mount, and at the bottom it is fixed on the mounting places of the fork and chainstays. Before buying such fenders, take a look at your frame, check for mounting locations. This will allow you to determine if such wings will fit in size.
Thanks to the all-metal construction and fixation on the long, hard wire whiskers at the wheel axle tips, half the wheel circumference is achieved.
Installation is much easier than the one mentioned about quick release models. The front is fixed to the frame with a fixing bolt and tightened with a lock nut. The nib pads are screwed onto the front fork with flat head screws.
The installation principle of the rear wing is similar to the front one. One has only to consider the fact that the longer the rear wing, the lower its location. This will allow for maximum protection, but will significantly reduce the ride height. Any dirt will fill the gap quickly enough, thereby bringing the bike to a standstill.
Is the choice of fenders so important for a quality installation??
Protective fenders will be useful for those who use the bike in the middle lane of the country, where heavy rainfall is frequent. Thus, it becomes quite obvious that their installation will bring extraordinary benefits.
When choosing a front fender, you need to pay attention to the bicycle fork. It must have a special mounting hole, which is necessary for the installation of quick-release wings.
For the rear fender, there should also be a hole in the rear frame spacer. The central part is attached to the frame, therefore the inner diameter of the fastening clips must match the diameter of the frame tube.
The full-length fenders, which fit exactly to the holes in the frame and fork, provide ample water and sand protection, not only from the top but also from the side. It is also worth noting that such wings practically do not dangle when driving through pits and exits from curbs.
What to do if there are no holes in the frame?
If the manufacturer has not provided for the installation of full-size wings, then you can independently make the mounting holes using a drill and a thin drill. Careful work will not damage the integrity of the frame. Side seizures from the drill can be covered with washers on both sides.
If you don’t want to make changes to the frame design, you should pay attention to the quick-release fenders, which are installed precisely in the crown of the front fork. Rear fender attaches exclusively to the seatpost of the bike frame.
Lack of quick release fenders
You can buy them almost blindly, since the fastening system is almost the same. Despite the simplicity and low cost, it is worth noting:
- High seating position (significant spatter at speed).
- Lack of side protection.
- The likelihood of the rear fender slipping off during strong shaking.
Do you need a grower when installing? Grovers are used primarily in combination with parts that are subject to strong vibrations. Their direct application can be found in the aspect of installing a quick-release pair, which is attached to the frame by means of plastic elements.
Grover can be placed under the nuts with any tightening system, even when it comes to hexagons. The benefits of such self-improvement will undoubtedly be useful.
Thus, it becomes abundantly clear that the installation of fenders plays a huge role for the bike owner. The installation process itself takes a minimum of time. The number of required tools is also quite meager. With a strong desire, you can do with improvised means.
As has already become clear, different attachment systems require a preliminary frame check or even its preparation. The easiest way to install is the quick-release pair clip system.
If you ignore the installation of the fenders, not only is it impossible to use the bike in rainy weather, but you can also provoke significant and accelerated wear of the frame, as well as the brakes on the cable. Sand and other debris from the road surface literally sandblast the frame and paintwork.
Also, the need for installation, followed by the choice of the method, may be based on the type of rubber (tires) used. A high tread has more aquaplaning, which means it throws more water at full revolution. Even a quick coupler has a useful protection factor of over 60%. This is a good result considering the distance between the wing and the tread.
Experts and manufacturers, during the installation process, advise using only original pairs and fasteners. Among these, you can find special inseparable seals that protect the frame from scratches and also reduce the level of vibrations transmitted to the mounting screws.
Remember that you can pick up the nicest fenders (and maybe even improve their splash-catching properties by attaching pieces of plastic to the ends of the fenders), but they still won’t protect you from splashing the cars on the left, and your back (or a backpack on it) from rain from above. Therefore, for a comfortable ride in wet weather, we recommend getting a backpack cover and / or raincoat. Also look out for visor helmets.
A complete protection should be comprehensive and original. Overall, bicycle fenders only provide 50% of the total protection. Regardless of the size and bindings, water will get on the legs and back. Please note, side fenders are also on sale.

Types of fenders for a bicycle

They are made of plastic, the distinctive characteristic of the quick-detachable short wings is their mobility. The bicycle fenders in question are attached using special clips. this is what ensures quick installation and quick removal of this part without using any specific tools.
Short quick-release fenders are often used by professional cyclists for their two-wheeled vehicle, although the level of protection from dirt and water will be minimal.
This type of wing is considered the classic and most reliable / practical. They are installed using bolts, and are attached to the fork and frame at three points. With the right width of the long fixed fenders, the cyclist will be protected from mud and water at a high level.
This type of bicycle part in question is made of metal, used for road and highway vehicles.
How to install fenders on a bike
You can install quick-release fenders on a two-wheeled vehicle yourself. This is done literally in two movements. the wing is simply set in place and fastened with a clip (one push). As for the stationary wings, then here you will need to prepare for a somewhat complex process.
Note: experts say that stationary fenders on a bicycle must be put in pairs. If you plan to install a rear rack in the future, then the wing is installed first. If there is a trunk, before working with the wings, it must be removed.
What you need to prepare to work on installing the fenders on your bike:

And then everything is simple and clear. the wings are attached to the frame and fork, the bolts and nuts are tightened as tightly as possible. After installing the wings, experts do not recommend immediately tightening the fasteners. first check that the part is installed correctly.
How to make bicycle fenders. two options
There are a great variety of bike fenders on sale now. But quality ones are expensive, and cheap ones leave much to be desired in terms of quality. What if you want good wings, and they sing romances in finance? There are two options for how to make wings for a bicycle with your own hands.
Option number one. plastic wings
Quite simple. You will need a bottle of liquid soap, a knife, an M5 bolt and 20 minutes of free time. You need to find a suitable plastic bottle and cut off the side of it with a clerical knife.
She will serve as a wing. The bottom of the plastic container is usually made denser than the sides. This is in our hands, we will attach to the fork through this part of the bottle. Try on the future wing on the bike, mark the place where the mount will be. If necessary, cut the shape in the right places, the plastic lends itself well to processing.
Almost finished bike fender
After the hole for the mounting bolt has been drilled, you can spray paint it in any suitable color. We fasten the improvised fender to the bike and go to test new things.
The rear fender can be made from a 5 liter engine oil can. The plus is that it is already black, no need to paint.
We cut off the desired shape, approximately as shown in the photo. To attach to the bike, we will use the bracket from the rear brake light (beacon). Two holes must be drilled or melted in the canister lid. In them we pass a cable tie, with which we will tighten the cover and bracket.
Now we fix the bracket on the seatpost, and screw the cut out piece of the canister into the cover. For a more reliable connection, you can melt the joints of the screed and the wing with hot melt glue. Or molten plastic.
To increase the length, if necessary, you can simply add a piece from the same canister. Place on rivets or bolted connections. Simple bike fenders are ready.

The second option is aluminum fenders
This option is more complicated, but on the other hand, they turn out to be noble, rather high-quality and attractive.
Making aluminum bike fenders
Materials used in homemade fenders: Aluminum strip approximately seven centimeters wide. Choose any length, depending on the diameter of the wheel and your preferences. The thickness is at least 3 mm, otherwise the wing will be too soft. Steel wire with a diameter of 3 mm and M5 bolts for mounting on a bicycle.

First you need to make a template out of cardboard so as not to redo the finished aluminum parts later. I made the usual arched shape, but you can do it as you like, it depends on your imagination. It is advisable to immediately mark the holes for the future mount. One hole should be made where the wing will be mounted near the carriage and near the seatpost. For additional fastening with wire, four more holes must be drilled. Two stepping back ten centimeters from the edge, and two in the middle between the edge and the hole near the seat post.
We use wire
When you are convinced that the template fits your bike perfectly, you can start marking on aluminum. You can draw on aluminum with a marker or scratch with a regular nail. We cut out the workpiece or cut it out with good metal scissors. After that we drill holes in the marked places. In order to remove the burrs left after drilling and trimming, we clean it with an emery cloth. After processing, proceed to the bending of the wing. You can bend the strip straight over the wheel and then manually tweak it, at the end of the wing you can bend the strip a little to create a mudguard. After that, cut off two pieces of steel wire to a length of approximately 2.5 wheel radius. We pass it through the wing as shown in the photo.
First from the outside of the wing, then from the inside out. At this stage, you may have to tinker, at least I didn’t succeed the first time. But it’s better to redo it a couple of times, but remain satisfied with the end result.
Fit washers under the hinges
Now remove the wheel from the bike, otherwise the wing will not be installed. We bolt the first two holes, and bend the ends of the wire into loops. We will attach it to the lugs for the trunk. Be sure to use washers to avoid scratching the paint on your bike. We put the wheel back and check that nothing clings or interferes with anywhere. The same technology can be used to make the front wing.
