Making a bag for the front wheel of a bicycle.
The homemade bike bag is made of polyester. First you need to cut out a long rectangle and fold it in the shape of the letter U. Then cut out two more rectangles that will serve as the side walls of the bag.
The bag will be closed with Velcro and therefore there will be two holes in the area of the side walls that can allow moisture to pass through. This problem is solved with a special hood that covers the upper part of the bike bag.
We connect the fabric using a soldering iron with a flat tip and additionally apply zigzag seams to increase strength.
I have experimented with Plasti Dip liquid polymer coating in the past. I thought it would be nice to cover the bike bag with it. Working with Plasti Dip is not very pleasant, but its use guarantees high strength and durability of the fabric. I painted the bottom and seams of the bag in several layers using a regular brush. Then I sprayed the bag with this substance from an aerosol can. I applied layer by layer until the bag was no longer showing through the light from the light bulb. At the same time, I took one can of Plasti Dip for two bike bags.

When working with this substance, be sure to observe safety precautions. Even outdoors, it is necessary to wear a mask. In addition, this substance is quite flammable.
The photo above shows the back of the front bag. I also borrowed the method of installing the bike bags on the bike from the Internet. True, I had to change it a little, since I bought a Jandd trunk. At first, I just wanted to attach the bike bags to the trunk with rings, but it turned out that the lower part of the trunk got in the way. Therefore, the fastening system had to be slightly changed. to fasten them to the lower rack of the trunk. With this method, the bike bag mount will not dangle.

Making a bicycle bag for the rear rack of a bicycle.
To create a homemade rear bike bag, I used two identical backpacks made from recycled water bottles. In order to reduce the size of the bike bag, I cut off the straps, though not all. I left the top handle so that there was something to hold the backpacks for when I took them off the bike. Also, small cylindrical objects can be attached to the handles using rubber ties.
As with the front bike, I brushed Plasti Dip to the bottom and seams, then sprayed it over the entire bag. I even sprayed the zippers. To make sure that they did not stick together, I periodically unbuttoned and fastened them during drying. Although the zippers worked a little tighter after spray application, they became more waterproof. To keep out the rain, I made the same hood as for the front bike.
The photo above shows the attachment mechanism installed on the back of the backpacks. To maintain good tension, use rubber straps to secure the bottom of the rear rack and the hook that secures the bike bag to the bike. As in the case of the front bike bag, I installed corrugated plastic (corrugated plastic) on the bottom of the bag to maintain shape and increase rigidity on the inside of the bag. True, in the case of the rear bicycle bag, an additional layer of corrugated plastic had to be added, since it will have to withstand a much greater load than the front one. In a similar way, I installed aluminum slings. the large one held the tops of the rings, and the smaller one was the ring itself.
The photo shows a bicycle bag with a polymer coating already applied in several layers. You can see how the bottom sags. the photo was taken after installing only one layer of corrugated plastic. That is why I got the idea to install an additional layer of corrugated plastic on the bike bag.
How to make a bike bag with your own hands
The photo above shows two bike bags I made with my own hands for my touring bike. I found instructions for making a bike bag on the Internet and improved it a little.
That’s it! I managed to make bike bags with my own hands. I am completely satisfied with them. In these bike bags, camping equipment stays completely dry even during the strongest rainfall. They even successfully survived one fall from my bike. I can only note the only drawback associated with the front bike bag. when you take things out of it, it staggers a little from side to side.
Cycling bag under the frame: how to sew quickly and easily
This model is manufactured in the shape of a right-angled triangle. It has a main compartment and two side s.
It is attached to the bike frame with slings. slips.
This bike bag is designed to carry the little things you need. It can support the weight of a one and a half liter water bottle. A plastic edging is inserted into the seams around the perimeter.
- main fabric (preferably waterproof);
- durable lining fabric;
- zipper fastener. 3 pcs;
- belt tape (sling);
- Velcro fastener;
- plastic edging.
There will be a reflective piping for the bike bag, but any other color will do.
Dimensions and pattern are based on 19 ”or 48.3 cm bike frame
For other dimensions of the frame, take measurements from the bike. height B and length D of the frame.
How to sew a comfortable box: the personal experience of the master
The box itself is made of shoe leather. It consists of three rectangular parts:
patterns that make up the lid and back wall;
a rectangle that forms three side surfaces;
When sewing the box, the side seams are made inside out, and the bottom is sewn on.
A reflective tape is pre-sewn on the side part. When the bike moves in poor visibility conditions, it will serve as a warning signal for drivers of oncoming traffic.
A zipper is sewn to the lid and the top of the bag, not forgetting to provide free movement without tension. Otherwise, it will quickly fail when it needs to be repaired.
Attachments for a belt from a belt tape are sewn on both sides. slings.
I recommend making it in two versions:
- one short, so that it is convenient to carry the bag in hand;
- the second long one to throw it over your shoulder.
You can leave only one belt, but provide for a way to adjust its length using plastic or metal buckles.
From the inside, the back wall of the bike bag is reinforced with a textolite plate of the same size for rigidity. An aluminum snap-on fastening element is screwed to it.
A spacious is sewn inside the container.
Side walls, top cover and bottom are lined from the inside with artificial elastic material, which also allows maintaining the rigid shape of the parallelepiped.
A transparent film is sewn onto the top of the lid from the outside. It is convenient to put a smartphone with a map in it and check the location on it while driving. The sensor works even through this film.
Travel experience has shown that it is advisable to tilt this cover slightly towards the cyclist’s view. Then it will be convenient to view the information on the phone screen.
This bike handlebar bag is convenient for traveling on any trail.
What to consider when cutting patterns
On paper, draw a right-angled triangle with legs equal to B and D.
In my case, it is 40 and 28 centimeters. Round the corners of the triangle for the convenience of processing seams.
We calculate the perimeter of the resulting triangle P, this will be the length of the side of the product 402849 = 117 cm.
We draw a pattern for it: a rectangular strip with a length P. In our case, P = 117cm, and set the width for it to 10 cm.
- Rounded rectangular triangle. 2 parts;
- Lateral surface in the form of a long rectangle. 1 part;
- Rectangle 157 cm. 1 piece;
- Rectangle 1013 cm 1 part;
Rectangles will cover the beginning and end of the zipper.
On the lining fabric we transfer a side in the shape of a triangle with a size slightly smaller than the main one. 2 parts.
According to the drawn dimensions with scissors, we cut out blanks from the main and lining material.
How easy it is to sew blanks without scrap: 4 consecutive steps
how to sew a zipper
First, we sew zippers onto the triangular parts (1). To do this, we make a horizontal incision 2 cm less than the fastener itself. We attach a zipper to it, gently bending the pattern fabric inward.
We bend the cut rectangular pieces (3) and (4) in half along the length and mark them in the corners of the triangle on the front side so that they cover the beginning and end of the sewn “zipper”.
We sew these inserts around the perimeter of the pattern, cut off the excess fabric.
It turns out here is such a simple protection for the “lightning” on the upper corners of the surface.
Sew in one more “zipper” of a smaller size, placing it below the first and parallel to it.
How to Make a Burrito Bag for Your Bike
Sew on the inside of the cut out of the lining fabric (5).
On the second triangular part (1) of the pattern of the product, we sew a “zipper” and sew the same small from the lining fabric (5).
On the tape of the side of the pattern (2) we mark the places where the slings will be attached, trying on the structure to the bike frame. For the given dimensions, the marks turned out: 16 cm, 45 cm, 104 cm.
We cut out the slings in the form of strips from the main fabric, folding it in half. We process the edges with a seam, sew on a Velcro fastener. Sew the finished belts to the side of the bike bag in the designated places.
Slings can be made from a nylon belt tape, to which Velcro is sewn.
Sew a plastic edging to the tape of the side of the bag (2), on the long sides.
You need to apply it to the front side of the pattern, as shown on the bottom of the picture.
We fold the triangular piece with two “zippers” and the side part with the front sides inward so that the edging is inside, between the details. Sewing parts along the perimeter of the triangle.
We retreat from the beginning of work two centimeters and do not finish the seam to the end.
At the junction of the plastic edging, insert a rectangular piece of fabric bent in half. It will cover the ugly section of the joint.
A piece of fabric sewn in this way protects the seam joint from snagging on random objects.
Sew all prepared places from the inside with one line.
Now unfasten the topmost zipper and sew on the seamy side of the second triangular section of the bag (1).
Do not forget to insert the protective strip at the edge joint here too. Turn the finished bag on the front side, carefully straighten the seams.
The bike bag under the frame is easy to attach, has enough volume for transporting accessories, does not interfere with pedaling even on difficult terrain.
Backpack pattern. cycling pants consists of 5 blanks:
- part in the shape of the letter P. 1 piece;
- bottom blank. 1 piece;
- pentagonal side part of the “trouser leg”. 2 pieces;
- large rectangle. 1 piece;
- bag cover. 1 piece.
Draw all the blanks to size on paper, cut them out and transfer them to the fabric.
Using the drawings, make paper pattern details for the underside of the bag (a) and the top side of the bag (b). From the drawing, and the front part of the bag (highlighted in gray), from the drawing b, the flap trim (highlighted in gray) is reshaped as separate parts. Allowances: Cut out all parts with allowances along contours 1 cm wide.
Unscrew the allowances along the longitudinal sections of the belt loops to the wrong side and glue with a glue stick. Stitch the longitudinal edges of the belt loops to the edge. Punch a hole for the buckle pin in the middle of each belt loop. With a belt loop, go around the jumper of the buckle, threading the pin through the hole, glue the ends of the belt loops with a glue stick.
Place the belt loops in the middle on the lower sections of the front parts of the bag, stitch the ends of the belt loops to the allowances. Side pieces side to front. Unscrew the seam allowances on the side pieces. Turn the allowances on the upper cuts of the side and front parts of the bag to the wrong side and stitch at a distance of 1 cm.
Sew the side parts to the side cuts of the bottom side of the bag with the right side to the front side (align the upper edges of the side parts with the marked lines of the stitches). Fold the belt loop for attaching the bag to the bike rack clamp in half across with the right side inward. Sew the cuts, leaving a section of approx. 4 cm for turning.
