  • Aerosol chain lubricants. sold in aerosol cans, they perfectly fall into the most inaccessible places of the chain, quite often they fall in the wrong direction (on rims, tires, etc.), based on this, it is necessary to apply very carefully;
  • Fluid Chain Lubricants. Sold in grease bottles that make it easy to apply the lubricant between the side plate and the chain link roller. But, most of these lubricants do not tolerate frost well and thicken, which complicates the process of their application.
  • Two-component chain lubricants. Sold in oil bottles. This type of lubricant is an attempt to create both grease and liquid grease outright. They are a grease diluted in a solvent. When applied to the chain, the lubricant easily falls into the right places, after which the solvent evaporates, and a thick grease remains in. At the end of its application, you need to give time to the solvent to fade away, therefore, it will not be possible to ride a bike right away, you will need to wait a couple of hours.
  • Frequent chain lubricants. Sold in cans or tubes. Not very well suited for lubricating bike chains, but it is very difficult to get it to the right place. inside the roller. For this, some cyclists boil the chain loaded with this lubricant, and then wipe it dry on the outside. This process does not look like chain lubrication and I do not recommend it to you.

It is necessary to create chain lubrication at a time when the chain begins to creak (on average, every 100-150 km). Apply lubricant only to a clean chain, it should be perfectly washed so that when bent it does not have a sand crunch. Then the chain must be dried, after which it is necessary to start lubricating.

It is possible to apply liquid or two-component lubricant to the chain without removing it from the bike. We drip from an oiler or syringe into the gap between the rollers on the walls of the chain links and repeat this operation for each link in turn. If grease gets on the brake disc, the wheel rim or tire must be removed with a dry cloth.

When all the links are lubricated, rotate the pedals in the opposite direction for a few minutes, and then wipe the sprockets and chain dry with a rag.

Cleaning the bike chain: the first method

The bike chain is moved into a container containing a solvent, you can use kerosene, turpentine or diesel fuel. After rinsing well, you need to drain the substance and pour in a new portion. This is how it should be done until the chain is relatively clean. You can determine the degree of purity by the transparency of the drained liquid. It should remain relatively transparent after rinsing.

Often a plastic bottle is used for this method. The chain is placed inside, the solvent is poured in, and then shaken well. You need to repeat this all with water. There are clear advantages to this method. They consist in the fact that you do not have to get dirty while carrying out this whole procedure.

Disadvantages are also present here, they are that frequent removal will be bad for the chain. Mountain bikes are known to require a lot of shifting loads. This means that there is a risk of rupture at the spreader point. Here you can damage both the link axle and the plate itself. It would be appropriate to purchase a special detachable link for these purposes. It eliminates the need for tools. It should be noted that today many chains are already sold with such a link in the kit. Shimano and Sram.

Chain cleaning

Two well-proven methods should be noted here. Both are considered effective and deserve special attention in practice. One is that the chain is removed from the bike. And the second one is for cleaning directly on the bicycle chainrings. This distinction is very important. it is dangerous to remove the chain every time for cleaning, this increases the risk of it breaking. But both the first and second methods are quite effective.

It should be noted that it is almost impossible to achieve absolute purity.

These substances are considered very effective, but over time, the main drawback of all oils comes to light. they are sticky. This means that any dirt readily sticks to them and remains on the chain. It is difficult to get rid of it with any cleaning. Don’t use oil for lubrication.
