Can WD-40 be used as a bicycle chain lubricant?
You sprinkled a WD-40 bike chain and went for a ride, what’s going on? The fluid will begin to lift all the dirt accumulated inside the chain links, mixed with the old grease, and displace all this due to the fluidity of the white spirit outward.
After a few kilometers, your bike chain will become dry, and for her, this is the worst thing you can expect. WD-40, in addition to dirt, will displace the remnants of old grease, which, at least somehow, lubricated the chain links. Therefore, do not believe the advertising of this tool, WD-40 can be used for its intended purpose. cleaning the chain before lubricating, if there is nothing or nowhere to wash the chain properly. WD-40 is a good cleaning agent for components prior to lubrication, but it is not a lubricant. In addition to the chain, it can be used to process all parts of the bicycle (carriage, bushings, steering wheels, etc., but only to remove old dried grease and dirt.
Take WD-40 and spray it on the bike chain, then rotate the pedals several times so that the dissolved dirt and old grease come out, then wipe it off with a rag. If the chain is too dirty, the procedure can be repeated. After the chain is completely dry, it can be lubricated.
WD-40 and bike chain
On the Internet, you can often find statements of people who consider WD-40 to be an excellent universal lubricant, in many cases they use it, including when servicing a bicycle. Can WD-40 be used as a lubricant?
The point is that WD-40, in principle, is not a lubricant. This liquid contains white spirit, secret additives. about which the manufacturer does not tell anyone and a small amount of light oils. In fact, this thing is not a lubricant, but a solvent.
White spirit has a high fluidity, so in WD-40 it is used to deliver the remaining components of the liquid. oils and additives. to hard-to-reach places. Once in the right place, the liquid dissolves thickened oil, rust, etc.

WD-40. composition and characteristics
And yet there is a document where the company indicates the composition of the vadashka, although not completely. In the United States, such products are required to obtain a safety data sheet, where the ingredients are indicated. According to this document, WD-40 consists of:
- white spirit (50%);
- carbon dioxide (25%);
- mineral oil (15%);
- hydrocarbons-alkanes (10%).
Here is such a composition that is 90% simple, has many useful properties, which makes this tool popular.
White spirit is a solvent that occupies half of the composition of the product, and is a component with a high penetrating property. In addition, it fights well with various types of fats, substances based on petroleum products, etc., which makes it possible to use WD-40 as a surface cleaner.
Cleaning a bicycle chain with WD-40 and then relubing it
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a common carbon dioxide that is needed in the composition to ensure the spray of the product, that is, it makes WD-40 an aerosol.
The mineral oil contained in the product provides after application of the product a film that repels water, while it also has a lubricating effect. Carbon-alkanes also have a number of positive qualities, but their exact composition is unknown.
WD-40. what is it?
WD-40 is a universal aerosol agent with lubricating, anticorrosive and water-repellent properties, intended for treatment and lubrication of various types of surfaces. Some WD-40 components have good penetration properties, which allows lubrication of hard-to-reach areas (for example, threads in a bolted joint).
WD-40 has been known for more than half a century, but its primary purpose is not known for certain and is kept secret by the manufacturer. There are many legends, the main one of which says that the product was developed for the space industry and was intended to protect the elements of spaceships from corrosion. over, the tool from the creator Norman Larsen did not learn immediately, but only from the fortieth attempt (hence the aerosol digital index). In the future, WD-40 showed a number of positive properties, which made it possible to use the product for household purposes.
Whether this legend corresponds to reality is unknown, but the fact that WD-40 is a unique tool of its kind is true. And the American manufacturer, which has the same name. WD-40, carefully protects the composition of the aerosol, and so much so that the product is not officially patented so that competitors do not recognize the ingredients. It turns out that the WD-40 company is the only manufacturer of this spray in the world.
WD-40. what it is and where it is used
In almost every auto repair shop or private garage, in addition to all kinds of keys, tools, fixtures and other equipment, there is a tool with the designation WD-40. This aerosol, popularly referred to in a simple way as vadashka, can greatly facilitate the repair and maintenance of a car. Without the use of this tool, bolted and rusted bolt connections that have not been unscrewed for a long time would have been a headache for an auto mechanic. But having WD-40 at hand, it is enough to process a bolt or nut, wait a little for the tool to work and start loosening, which will go much easier after processing. And this is just one of the properties of this remedy.
The scope of use of WD-40 is very extensive, although this tool is most popular among motorists. Due to its properties, aerosol is used for:
- Rusty threaded connections. The oil and white spirit contained in the composition provide not only good penetration into the joint and its lubrication, but also partially remove corrosion products from the surface, therefore it is easier to unscrew the nut or bolt;
- Processing terminals and connections of the electrical circuit of the car. The agent displaces water and creates a protective film on the surface of the joints, which prevents the occurrence of oxidative processes;
- Defrosting the door lock. Injection of the agent inside the lock leads to the dissolution and displacement of water.
- Reducing friction between vehicle components. By creating a protective oil film, friction can be reduced. But we note that this effect is short-lived, but the convenience of working with aerosol allows you to lubricate surfaces where you cannot reach with other means.
But not only in a car, you can use WD-40, the scope of its application, due to its properties, is very wide. It can be used not only on technology, but in everyday life. The tool perfectly fights all kinds of stains and corrosion, helps to eliminate squeaks, and allows you to develop sour hinges. There are a lot of places where you can use this aerosol. In general, wherever lubrication or moisture protection is required, WD-40 is quite applicable.
One of the advantages of the WD-40 is its ease of use. Since the product is made in the form of an aerosol, all that is required is to spray it onto the desired surface. To treat hard-to-reach places, the kit includes an extension nozzle that allows you to apply the product where it is very difficult to reach. In addition, with the help of the nozzle, the connection can be processed with high precision, without wasting the aerosol.
But there are several nuances of working with him.
- First, do not spray WD-40 on an open fire, as the product is flammable;
- Secondly, it is not allowed to get into the eyes and prolonged contact with the skin.
When processing bolted connections, the agent must be applied so that it does not fall on the edge of the bolt or nut, otherwise, due to the lubricating effect, the key may slip. After processing, you should wait some time for the agent to penetrate into the compound and take effect. The same applies to the treatment of locks in the event of freezing. Alternatively, you can apply WD-40 immediately after parking the car. This will generally eliminate the likelihood of freezing during the idle time of the car.
If, for example, you need to develop a sour door curtain, but you need to apply a product, wait a while and carefully begin to develop an element, periodically additionally treating it with a product to increase the lubricating effect.
Analogues of WD-40. Folk remedies
Although the full composition of WD-40 is kept secret, its main components are known, so there are many analogues of this tool. For example, Liqui Moly produces a multi-purpose lubricant Multi-Spray Plus 7. Among more or less well-known products, one can also note Car Technic, Autol, Sonax X-treme, Teroson Universal, and these are not all analogues of WD-40. In some cases, these tools are even superior to the WD-40, and yet they are just analogues and the leader among them is the WD-40.
Note that there is not always a vdashka or its analog at hand, but you need to unscrew the rusted bolted connection. And folk methods can help with this.
For successful loosening of the threaded connection, you can use kerosene or the same white spirit. They are highly fluid and will easily penetrate into the joint. The only thing is that they have a weak lubricating property, so more effort will have to be made. You can also treat the bolt with diesel fuel, which, although not as fluid as kerosene, but lubricates well.
From non-standard means, vinegar essence and the popular Coca-Cola drink can be noted. Acetic acid is excellent at dissolving rust, so the essence is a fairly good remedy. As for Coca-Cola, it contains orthophosphoric acid, which also fights corrosion well. It is not for nothing that it is part of the corrosion inhibitors that are used to remove rust on the car body.
Do not forget about the most popular way. a hammer and a chisel. This is already an extreme option that will help get rid of a rusty nut or bolt, however, forever.
How to lubricate a bike chain if it’s new
When assembling the chain at the factory, the manufacturer uses a very thick paste, the consumption of which is enough for 300-400 km of rides, after which the owner will have to cope with the task on his own. It is difficult to apply the same thick lubricant, so more liquid alternatives and sprays are used in everyday life.
After buying a bike, wipe off any traces of grease that have appeared on the outside before the first ride. Use a soft cloth. There is no need to remove grease inside the chain! A simple procedure does not take much time, but will avoid serious contamination and damage to the chain.
Why clean and lubricate your bike chain
The longevity and health of your bike is largely up to you. Even the most advanced transport cannot take care of itself and the owner’s task is to provide timely care for the most important parts of the iron horse. Do I need to clean the transmission? It is enough to look at the state of the chain, cassette, led system, the owner of which considers this process superfluous. Black spots, drips, a thick layer of an incomprehensible mass, which contains dust, dirt, sand, oil, plant elements and much more that cannot be recognized. in this favorable environment, steel gnaws multiply very quickly. bacteria that stimulate the appearance of corrosion and corrode the metal. When asked whether it is necessary to lubricate the bicycle chain, the answer is unequivocal. it is necessary, moreover, first it should be cleaned.
Chain care: features
The bike drivetrain should shine. There should be no dirt or excess grease on it. Any moisture will cause the rapid appearance of new contaminants. It is advisable to clean the transmission every 100 km in good weather. How often do I lubricate my bike chain? You do not need to do this every time you clean. Use a lubricant when the characteristic dry rustle appears.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain
Apply light lubricant to each roller of the chain, then wipe dry the outside of the substance. In motion, part of the lubricant gets out in any case. In this case, use a stiff brush to clean the chains, sprockets and rollers. Choose an accessory with medium bristles. Special brushes are available for easy penetration of bristles into hard-to-reach areas.
How to clean a bicycle chain if it is in a running state, one brush may not be enough. Use a specific transmission cleaner (grease solvent). Its formula is specially designed to quickly remove caked grease mixed with dirt.
Sometimes cleaning the chain is not enough to remove all the dirt, especially if the links are clogged with a mixture of grease, dirt, sand. In such situations, you need to know how to wash your bike chain. Use a chain cleaner with several brushes. such a device will greatly simplify the maintenance of the transmission.
What can not be used to lubricate the bicycle chain
The main mistake of cyclists is the use of WD-40 grease and analogues. This aerosol is not a lubricant and has a completely different principle of operation. It is used to dissolve old grease (unblock too contaminated and acidified compounds). Use a chain cleaner, not a lubricant. The amount of oil in its composition is not enough to perform the necessary functions.
Engine oil will not be useful for the chain and the bike as a whole. This substance is designed for use in a closed atmosphere at elevated temperatures, which cannot be applied to a bicycle drivetrain.
There is no need to look for an alternative. the consumption of special bicycle chain oil is minimal. A small jar will last for many years. Why replace it with unsuitable alternatives?
Can I lubricate my bike chain with grease? No, just like lithol, sunflower oil and aromatic oils. Buy a product designed to work with bicycle parts.
How and what you can and should lubricate a bicycle chain
How to lubricate a bicycle chain so that the lubricant retains its properties for a long time and provides reliable protection for the part?
The quality of the lubricant directly affects not only the operation of the entire transmission system, but also its service life. To select a lubricant, it is important to understand exactly how this material differs from the substances used to process other parts.
In motion, the chain constantly rubs the rollers against the stars. Such friction does not lead to significant changes, but internal friction can cause more damage to the mechanism. The chain includes many links, each of which contains 4 elements. plates (2 pcs.), Pin, roller.
To determine the place that most requires processing, you need to understand which of the elements is subject to the most wear.
There is no friction between the pins and the outer plates. these elements are very tightly planted. The greatest friction occurs between the pins and the inner plates. The plates create grooves in the pin, which leads to its rapid wear. As a result, the rollers do not join the teeth of the stars, which leads to their wear. The rear derailleur rollers, which are most often made of plastic, are equally affected. This leads to a decrease in the coherence of gear shifting, the appearance of clicks, noise, chain slippage. What kind of oil is allowed to lubricate the bicycle chain to avoid unpleasant consequences?
For effective action, the lubricant must enter the interior of the system and remain there. over, the substance must have several more important properties:
- do not fly out in splashes when driving;
- do not wash off with water;
- do not dry out.
If you treat the outer part of the chain instead of the inner one, the effect will be exactly the opposite. the thick fluid will collect all the dust and dirt from the roads, further polluting the transmission. So, the rule for every cyclist is that the chain should be dry and clean on the outside and well-processed on the inside.
Features of the choice of grease
Of all the parts of a bicycle drivetrain, only the chain needs lubrication. Do not lubricate the stars! What should be the lubricant? Easy to penetrate the rollers, do not leak, do not dissolve in water, do not dry for a long time. The grease should not be washed off in rain or other precipitation, when driving through puddles. As an analogue of bicycle oil, you can use a motorcycle lubricant. It will not spatter at high speeds, but it is more expensive and sold in larger packs. Such a purchase is not always advisable.
All bicycle lubricants can be divided into 2 groups:
- For dry weather (Dry). Teflon-containing substance, has dustproof properties, protects the chain from moisture penetration. This grease is considered universal. Even if you get caught in the rain, upon arrival home, it is enough to clean the chain, wipe it, lubricate it, wipe it again.
- For high humidity conditions (Wet). It is made on the basis of synthetic oils, in some cases it contains paraffin. The formula contains a large amount of silicone, due to which it perfectly protects against moisture, but is not suitable for use in dry conditions due to high fat content. This option is the optimal solution to the question. how to lubricate the bicycle chain in winter and autumn.
There are also special formulas with additives on sale. For example, ceramics form a reinforced layer on the parts, which increases the strength and extends the service life of the chain.
Thickened formulas allow for factory lubrication effects. Such substances are initially fluid, easily penetrate into the inner parts of the chain, after which the solvent evaporates from them and the paste thickens. The main thing is to wipe off the remaining grease from the outside in time.
Bicycle grease is sold in different packages. Spray packaging is not the most convenient option. The aerosol is uneconomical, its consumption is increased, moreover, it is easy to spray grease on those parts of the transmission that do not need lubrication, as well as the rim, frame, spokes, brakes.
It is much more convenient to use a can or aerosol with a special tip. Grease can be applied to each roller without overshooting or requiring additional cleaning of the bike.
How to lubricate a bicycle chain with paraffin?
But: when ?, why ?, what? and most importantly. as?; let’s try to figure it out.
Chain. an important component of the propulsion system of the bike. Much depends on its condition: maneuverability, comfort when driving and changing gears, the ability to move itself. To understand whether to lubricate the bike chain, let’s first look at its device.
How and what to lubricate a bicycle chain?
Main structural elements of the chain:
It may appear that the most vulnerable is the roller, which is rubbing against the teeth of the sprockets. In fact, the inner plate and chain pins are subject to more wear. Under load, they quickly wipe off, and without lubrication for the bicycle chain, the device becomes unusable.
Many people ask the question: what kind of oil to use to lubricate the bicycle chain. There is no definite answer, it all depends on the intensity and conditions of use of the bike. There are two types of oils.
The best lubricant for your bike chain depends on how you use your bike, but in most cases, paraffin wax is the best option. The application of this lubricant is slightly different from traditional oils and requires some time.
Degreasing your bike chain.
Before you clean your bike chain, you need to degrease it first. Keep your bike chain free of dirt and grease. There are several ways to degrease your bike chain.
The most obvious is to use a brush and a bucket of soapy water. But this method has its drawbacks. If you need to clean and degrease your bike chain, we do not recommend using this method. This way you can damage your bike.
This is where the cleaner comes in to help clean your bike chain. WD-40 will not only degrease your bike chain. It also cleans the bike chain of stubborn dirt and grass.
First, you need to rinse and clean your bike chain to remove surface dirt. Spray WD-40 to clean the bike chain. Then let the agent soak in and clean the bike chain.
In addition, the WD-40 can be used for more than just cleaning the bike chain. WD-40 is also great for cleaning other moving metal parts of your bike.
How to clean a bike chain?
Once you’ve given the WD-40 enough time to work on the dirt, it’s time to grab a brush. Now it’s time to clean the dirt off the chain.
The WD-40 ensures that the job gets done in a short time. WD-40 grease breaks down dirt. This way, you can easily clean your bike chain even from stubborn dirt.
Plus, using the WD-40 ensures that your bike chain isn’t damaged during the cleaning process. Considering how the WD-40 loosens accumulated dirt, it reduces the need for a thorough cleaning of the chain. In some cases, thorough cleaning can even damage the bike chain.

How to lubricate a bicycle chain
Transmission care. this is what you most often have to do with your bike if you want it to last long and look great. But there are important tricks here.
Cleanliness is the key to health! This expression is true not only for organisms, but also for bicycle transmission. A terrible dream of your bike. black (like night) cassette, chain and system, completely covered with “plasticine” from old grease, dust and poplar fluff?
In such a favorable environment, steel-cutters usually start. evil microbes, imperceptibly devouring stars, chains and rollers :).
A well-groomed drivetrain should look “shiny”.
This is the most important and frequent thing you will do with your bike. Ideally, after every 100 km of travel in dry weather, give the transmission 3-5 minutes of time to clean, and lubricate it only when you hear the rustle of a dry chain when driving.
Chain lubrication. one of the most important steps in bike care. The used oil (lubricant) directly affects not only the quality of the transmission, but also the durability of the chain and sprockets on your bike. That is why today I will tell you how and with what you need to lubricate the chain, and how you cannot lubricate it. How is bicycle chain lubricant different from other oils? The bike chain is in motion, with its rollers constantly rubbing against the stars, as well as against the rollers of the rear derailleur. Chain roller friction (external friction). does not lead to “stretching” (increase in length) of the chain. The most intense friction occurs just inside the chain itself. Each link consists of four elements (2 plates, pin and roller). A total of about 110 such links in the chain.
With its rollers, the new chain slides into the teeth of the new cassette. To understand where the lubricant is most needed in the chain, you need to understand what exactly is wearing out in it. Please note that the pins are firmly seated in the holes of the outer plates, which means there is no friction between them. There is friction between the inner link plates and the pins. It is here that the development of the pin takes place, the inner plates rub the grooves in it, which leads to the lengthening of the chain (they say: the chain is stretched). As a result, the rollers do not so accurately fall into the teeth of the stars, and wear them out. Rear derailleur rollers, usually made of plastic, also suffer. In addition, the clarity of gear changes is reduced, noise, clicks, chain slip and other undesirable phenomena occur. Thus, the most undesirable wear on the chain does not occur outside, but inside it.
The task of any chain lubricant is to penetrate inside, and stay there as long as possible: do not dry out, do not wash out with water, do not splash when the chain moves. But on the outside, the lubricant does more harm than good. coupled with dust, it turns into an abrasive paste that does its job perfectly.
The chain must be kept dry on the outside and lubricated on the inside.
After you have applied liquid (!) Lubricant to each roller, you need to wipe the chain dry with a soft cloth. When riding, some of the lubricant still flows out and accumulates dust, so the chain, stars and rollers must be cleaned with a medium-length hard bristle brush. It is best to use special handy brushes for this, which can clean hard-to-reach places, such as derailleur rollers and the gap between the stars.
With regular cleaning, your transmission will not only look great, it will perform great and last much longer.
A brush alone will not be enough to bring a black “running” transmission back to normal, so you need a chain cleaner. It is also called a “grease remover” (grease remover, from the word de-greaser). This composition washes well stubborn grease with dirt. At worst, WD-40 will help out, but special cleaners work better. If a lot of sand or dirt has got into the chain (for example, after a serious “mud-kneading”), then the brushes are of little help: the chain should be washed. For this purpose, there is no better way than a special chain wash. It allows you to gently wash the bike chain even in the apartment.
The new chain is lubricated when the links are assembled at the factory with a thick but very sticky lubricant. It will be enough for 300-400 km of driving, after which it will be difficult to put grease into the rollers.
Before the first ride, wipe off the sticky lubricant from the new chain with a soft cloth lightly dampened with solvent. Do not wash out the factory grease from the inside!
If you don’t wipe off the new chain, then very quickly the factory sticky grease will turn your transmission into black pieces of iron. By the way, for some reason, sellers do not talk about this, but this simple procedure will make it easier for you to maintain the transmission in a brilliant form (in every sense). Now let’s analyze the chain lubricants.
One of the most common mistakes. This is a chain lubrication with WD-40 aerosol and its analogues.
WD-40. it is a liquid with a high penetrating power, designed primarily to unblock acidified compounds and displace moisture. Yes, it contains a small amount of oil, but in essence WD-40 is carbonated kerosene, but not a lubricant. Wedeshku, Anyway (Hado) and other analogs are nevertheless good to use to dissolve old grease if you want to clean well running transmission elements. In this case, you need to spray the parts abundantly with a spray, putting a rag so that the composition does not get on the other parts, and wait a little. After that, clean with a brush, wipe dry and grease with a special liquid chain lubricant (about it below).
Engine oil as a chain lubricant is already better, but for now it’s a four-point. As the name suggests, this oil must work in motors, in a closed environment at high temperatures. Its outstanding motor properties are not needed at all in bicycles. Conversely, engine oil does not promise us well to penetrate the rollers, does not dry out for a long time, does not wash off and weakly attract dust. The same can be said about oil for sewing machines, as well as transformer, motorcycle, olive, massage and aromatic oils)) If you have excellent bicycle oils, it makes no sense to drip any other oil into the chain and think what will happen.
Having bought a jar of excellent bicycle chain oil for 100-200 UAH, you will present it to your grandchildren. Does it make sense to look for an alternative?
Only the chain should be lubricated in the bicycle transmission, and in no case the stars.
As mentioned above, the following qualities are important in a bicycle chain lubricant:
- It is good to penetrate the videos;
- Stay there for a long time, do not dry out and do not leak;
- Attract as little dust as possible;
- Resist being washed away by rain.
In principle, motorcycle chain oil will work for us, but it should also not spray out of the rollers when the chain rotates at high speed. Therefore, motorcycle oil is more expensive, and it has more packaging. Bicycle chain lubricants are divided into two main types.
Dry grease. They are often made with Teflon and are designed to be used in dry or not very humid conditions. It has a good dustproof effect due to the large amount of Teflon in the composition. Well protects the chain from short-term moisture ingress. If you get caught in the rain, this smear will protect the chain from corrosion, but as soon as you get home it is better to clean the transmission, wipe it dry, lubricate the chain and wipe it dry again. According to many mechanics, dry weather grease is versatile and can be recommended as an everyday oil.
Wet and wet lubricant (Wet). It is made on the basis of synthetic silicone oils, sometimes with the addition of paraffin. The lubricant protects the chain very well against direct and prolonged exposure to moisture. Due to the high content of silicone, it works well in wet and dirty conditions, but is categorically not suitable for use in dry weather due to the high fat content of the composition. We recommend using this type of lubricant on rainy autumn days, early spring, when running marathons in bad weather, and especially in winter.
Ceramic lubricants deserve special attention. According to the manufacturers, they create a ceramic layer of increased strength on the rubbing parts, which is their service life.
Greases with thickeners are also interesting. When grease is applied to the roller, it is very fluid, after which the solvent evaporates from it, and it becomes thick. Thus, it stays inside longer. When lubricating, it is important to wipe off the lubricant from the outside of the chain in time.
The main types of grease packaging. bottle with tip and aerosol can. Despite the seeming primitiveness of the bottle, I still recommend it. With it, I apply lubricant directly to each roller, and it takes up less space in the backpack. An aerosol can be taken for a workshop where you need to quickly lubricate more than one chain in a day. Due to spraying, a lot of lubricant is sprayed by, and consumption increases. Also, if you are not used to spray, it is easy to stain rims, spokes, frame, brake rotors.
Having bought a jar of excellent bicycle chain oil for 100-200 UAH, you will present it to your grandchildren. Does it make sense to look for an alternative?
To summarize, I advise you not to skimp on lubrication and choose a special oil for bicycle chains. It takes into account all the nuances of the operation of an open bicycle transmission. I recommend choosing a bottle with a spout. If you choose a spray, be sure to put a rag under the stream so that the grease does not get where it should not. You only need to lubricate the chain, and only inside the rollers, only when you begin to hear a dry rustle of the chain while driving. Wipe the chain dry after lubrication. Brush the chain, stars, rollers, avoiding the accumulation of dirt, sand, dust.
Can I lubricate the WD40 bicycle chain
I often come across the opinion on the Internet that WD40 is an excellent universal lubricant, and people use it in many cases, including to lubricate a bicycle. Is it correct?
The fact is that WD40 is not literally a lubricant. The composition of this liquid is white spirit, some substances that the company keeps secret and just a little light oils. At its core, this drug is a solvent, not a lubricant.
White spirit has increased fluidity, and in this case it is a vehicle that delivers oils to hard-to-reach places. Having reached the right place, the liquid liquefies sour oil, rust, etc.
Nothing good will happen if you spray WD40 on your bike chain and go for a ride. The liquid will lift all the dirt that has settled inside the links, mixed with dried grease, and, thanks to the flowing white spirit, will force them out.
Literally in ten kilometers your chain will be already dry, and this is the worst thing, besides a skew, that can happen to it. Friends, do not buy into advertisements for this product, which says that it protects metal from corrosion. This is absolutely not the case. Having poured over the WD40 chain, you washed out the old grease from it, and left it dry to rust.
Ideal bike chain lubrication strategy. Spray WD40 on it, then turn the pedals ten times so that the dissolved dirt crawls out and wipe it off with a rag.
Then carefully drip one drop of bicycle lubricant onto each link of the chain (if it’s summer, then I recommend Pedro’s Extra Dry). Rotate the pedals again so that oil penetrates all joints and wipe off the rest with a rag. You can read more in the article on bicycle chain maintenance.
Please note that when spraying the chain, fluid may settle on the brake surfaces of the rim or brake discs. I would recommend covering these areas with a rag while lubricating the chain.
To summarize, WD40 is a good tool for cleaning mechanisms prior to lubrication, but it is not a lubricant by itself. You can use it to treat all bike parts. bushings, carriages, steering wheels, but only to remove old dried grease.

Cleans or lubricates? We use WD-40 in bicycle maintenance
WD-40 has literally become a universal assistant, a tool that can be used not only to lubricate mechanisms, door hinges and rubbing parts, but also for a lot more (you can read more about this wonderful chemical composition here). And today, on the eve of the start of a full-fledged cycling season (although many cyclists have already left on their two-wheeled carts), I would like to answer the question: is WD-40 so good at lubricating the chain and can it be used instead of specialized care products for cleaning and lubricating the chain??
It is also worth noting separately that maintenance of bicycles, in particular keeping the chain in a clean, lubricated, and therefore working condition, is a prerequisite for the trouble-free and maximum long-term operation of this important element of the bike’s transmission.
BTW, as the experiment described in the article Which chain lubrication is best for dry weather (twentysix.ru) has shown, a well-lubricated chain can save watts of energy that owners who do not care about the cleanliness of their bike chains spend on resistance to poorly rotating rollers in the links. So, if it is possible to achieve a saving of 4 watts, the loss of power is similar to 1 kg of weight. And this, we will tell you, is the most serious saving in weight.!
But these are all lyrics that should lead you to the main question of the material: should you use WD-40 or a specialized lubricant? And the answer to this question will depend on which type of WD-40 the cyclist chooses
Can WD-40 be used in a bicycle chain?
WD-40, in its basic form, is a water displacing spray used to prevent moisture build-up on surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas.
Cycling experts say that while it is suitable for many things, it is not the best choice for use in bicycle chains.
The fact is that conventional WD-40, instead of lubrication, on the contrary, deprives the bicycle chain of lubricants previously applied at the chain manufacturer’s factory or used by the owner. That is, the composition WASHES OUT GREASE, leaving the chain UNPROTECTED.
A similar conclusion was made by experts from the site. twentysix.ru. noting the following:
It should be noted that sprays and their main representative in the form of WD-40 are practically not suitable for chain lubrication.
And here is what the filling of an aerosol can with WD-40 consists of (information taken from Wikipedia):
25%. carbon dioxide displacer;
15%. mineral oil (the exact composition is a trade secret);
10%. inert ingredients.
The main thing that you need to know from this is that white spirit is a gasoline-solvent, or more commonly, a solvent. There is a large part of this component in Ve-Te-shk, which only confirms the above opinions of the cycling expert community.
However, every cloud has a silver lining. Based on the above, WD-40 can be used as a chain cleaner before lubrication.
As experienced riders advise, this is a good tool for cleaning components BEFORE GREASING in a hurry.
The algorithm will be as follows:
- Clean the chain with a brush / rag from adhering dirt, sand and other obvious contaminants;
- Apply spray along the entire length of the chain (to each link);
- Run a clean brush over the links, cleaning out any dirt between the links of the chain;
- Wait a couple of minutes until the product is dry on the surface of the chain links;
- Wipe the chain with a lint-free cloth;
- Bike lubricant can be applied after 30-40 minutes.
P. S. The described method is an express variant of cleaning. For cleaning, you can use kerosene or pure white spirit. the result is the same, but much cheaper. So go for it! The main thing is to keep the bike clean and not to use WD-40 as a lubricant for the chain and other parts of the bike.
Simple tips on how to maintain your bike chain
If you love cycling, you know how important it is to keep your bike in good condition. It is necessary to carry out technical inspection as often as possible. By eliminating various defects in the work of individual parts, the life of the entire bike is extended. First of all, you need to keep track of the most frequently working elements. One of these is a bicycle chain. The performance of movement mechanisms depends on the state of its links. The main symptom of chain wear is stretching. As a mechanical transmission unit, the chain wears and lengthens. This leads to the depletion of the remaining drive elements. To prevent early wear and tear on your bike chain, you need to know how to care for it. The maintenance of the chain includes the following prevention methods:
- conservation for the winter.
When all the maintenance points are carried out systematically, there are practically no problems during the operation of the chain. The chain retains excellent performance for a long time.
And vice versa, in the absence of a respectful attitude, the earliest possible failure of it is ensured. A well-groomed chain must be free from rust, burrs, dirt and scale.
Here are some tips to help you keep your bike in good condition:
Cleaning the bike chain
You can clean the bike chain from grease and dirt in the following way: Position the bike in such a way that you can pedal in both directions without interference. Apply a degreasing agent to a dry, clean cloth, treat the chain by rotating the pedals. If the chain is heavily soiled, repeat the cleaning procedure several times. For a more thorough cleaning of the chain, use a specialized bicycle chain cleaner. We recommend using WD-40 for cleaning the chain. WD-40 is a good cleaning agent for components prior to lubrication. In addition to the chain, it can be used to process all parts of the bicycle (carriage, bushings, steering wheels, etc., but only to remove old dried grease and dirt.
Bicycle chain lubrication
After cleaning the chain, spray WD-40 on it, then turn the pedals ten times so that the dissolved dirt remaining inside the bicycle chain crawls out and wipe it off with a rag. Then carefully drop one drop of bicycle lubricant on each link of the chain, turn the pedals again so that the oil penetrates into all the joints and wipe off the rest with a rag. WD-40. Excellent for protecting metal parts and joints from corrosion. As you know, rust greatly shortens the life of a metal. WD-40 also protects against dirt build-up, which reduces wear on the bike chain.
One thing is better than nothing
Many people have been using their bicycles for years without cleaning them and very rarely lubricating the chain. The chain must be thoroughly cleaned before lubrication. If you don’t have time for the whole procedure, just treat the WD-40 chain well and wipe with a clean cloth to remove any dirt. WD-40 will quickly clean and lubricate your bike chain from dirt, grease and other contaminants.
Check your bike chain regularly for rust and wear
The rollers and other metal components of your bike chain are in constant motion and are subject to wear and corrosion. It is important to check your bike chain regularly for signs of wear and also to check the chain tension. Chain wear is its elongation due to bore axes) of its seats. There are literally fractions of a millimeter on each link. But as a result, the whole chain cannot normally lie on the cassette stars. The chain continues to stretch, grinding away the metal of the star more and more and, in the end, begins to jump, break off on neighboring stars, or even spin. The worst thing for the chain is the adhering dirt and sand. They work like an abrasive, grinding down gear teeth and chain links. Therefore, it is very important to treat your bike chain, clean it, lubricate it, keep it in good working order so that your bike will serve you for many years.
How and how to lubricate a bicycle chain
It doesn’t matter if you are an avid cyclist or you just ride occasionally for fun, you will surely agree that the bicycle is a great human invention. It is an environmentally friendly and convenient form of transport, a wonderful way to travel, an incredibly healthy way of transportation.
For a bike to last a long time, its components need to be cared for. Among them is a bicycle chain that needs to be lubricated periodically.
How to choose a bicycle chain lubricant
A suitable lubricant must be selected before lubricating the chain. To do this, ask yourself two questions:
- Is it cold outside the window?
- How often do I ride my bike?
The answers to them determine which type of lubricant to choose. There are two types of lubricants: dry and wet.
Dry lubricants are not suitable for use in the cold season because they lose their properties at low temperatures. Their composition is based on wax, so the effect of their use is not long-lasting. These lubricants have a liquid consistency, but after being applied to the chain, they dry out and form a thin waxy coating. Dry lubricants are good because they do not stick to dirt.
If it is cold outside, choose a wet lubricant. This lubricant does not dry out and ensures chain operation at all temperatures. Wet lubricants retain their working properties much longer than dry ones, which is why they are preferred by cyclists who ride a lot. The main disadvantage of wet lubricants is the adhesion of dust and dirt.
How to apply chain lubricant
Before applying the lubricant, the chain must be thoroughly cleaned. To do this, take a regular rag and water. wash the chain, then dry it. When the chain is dry, take machine oil, moisten a rag with it and wipe the chain thoroughly.
After preparing the chain, we proceed to the process of applying lubricant. To do this, use a small bottle with a nozzle for injecting liquid, a plastic pipette or syringe is also suitable.
Lubricant should be applied to the chain rollers by dripping or spraying onto each roller. When applying lubricant, rotate the chain with the pedal, do this for several circles. Once the process is complete, spin the chain a few turns to see how easy it is to move. When this is done, take a dry rag, wrap it around the chain and roll it through the rag to wipe off excess grease.
Congratulations, you’re done! You can now enjoy cycling knowing that the chain is in perfect condition.!
