Drip and aerosol lubrication
There are two ways you can apply the lubricant. You can use either aerosol lubricant or drip lubricant. Both are a similar product, but for chain lubrication I recommend using a drip lubricant instead of a spray lubricant. Drip lubrication allows oil to more easily penetrate each chain link without lubricating other parts of the bike.
In aerosol lubrication, it is difficult to control the amount of oil being sprayed and the spray is very easy to come into contact with other parts of the bike, such as the brakes or the rotor on the rear wheel.

Aerosol lubricants are useful for other objects, but I would recommend paying special attention to where the spray can be used.
Types of bicycle lubricants
First step. choosing the right oil. There are two types of lubricant designed for bicycles: wet oils and dry oils.
There are also automotive oils and general utility oils, and none of them work well for bicycles. As an example, oils for general utility use WD-40. This light alcohol based oil is designed to eliminate minor squeaks as well as lubricate non-moving parts. However, it is too light for a bicycle chain, which also leaves a waxy coating on the chain, leading to faster chain wear.
Engine oil, on the other hand, is too thick to penetrate all small and inaccessible areas of the bike chain in a proper manner. In addition, the engine oil is too sticky and collects a lot of dirt, which also causes chain wear. So take my advice and use oils made for bicycles.

Dry oil on the other hand is an alcohol based lubricant that dries on the chain and leaves a waxy layer that protects and lubricates the chain. Most dry oils take about 3-4 hours to dry and should be used well before traveling. The main advantage of dry lubrication is that it does not collect a lot of dirt.
On the reverse side, dry engine oils soften quickly, especially in wet or dirty conditions. On top of that, some dry engine oils leave a coating on the chain that is extremely difficult to remove. Pro Link and Boshield T9 are recommended for cyclists interested in dry lubrication. Both of these lubricants are excellent and will not leave any coating on the chain. The oil is great for mountain and road bikes. In dry conditions, this lubricant works great because it does not collect all the dust and dirt on the chain and as long as there is no excess moisture, the lubricant remains intact.
Wet environment oils
This oil is thick enough to stay on the chain and thin enough to penetrate all the small moving parts, and will remain damp (feels like) while everything is being cleaned or washed. This oil cleans, lubricates and protects the chain from corrosion.
The best place to use this type of lubricant is in dirty or humid conditions where there is not a lot of dust. Be careful, though, because there are some wet oils that work well for moving parts of the bike, but are too thick to lubricate the bike chain.
Phil Wood Tenaciou and Finish Line Cross Country are examples of such thick oils. The downside to using wet engine oils is that they stay wet on the chain and pick up a lot of dirt and debris that remains on all metal fragments and slowly wear out the chain drive as you drive. As the chain collects more dirt, the drive will break down faster. Therefore, it is really important to use wet engine oil only when the conditions call for it.
Some really good wet machine oils to recommend are Tri Flow and DuMonde Tech. I would recommend wet oils for cyclists who either do not lubricate their bike chain often, or for those who ride in wet or muddy climates, because this lubricant will stay on the chain longer.
Do I need to lubricate the new chain?
New chains come with the lubricant already applied to them. This lubricant was originally more of a retarder or rust inhibitor than a lubricant and manufacturers recommended removing it before installing the chain. Now, it is not only a rust inhibitor, but also a really good lubricant and manufacturers recommend leaving the lubricant on the chain. Sometimes a new chain has a little excess lubricant, you need to remove the excess lubricant, so it won’t collect a lot of dirt on the chain, but be careful not to remove too much.
How to apply machine oil?
The best way to use chain lubricant is to put one drop of oil in each rivet / bushing (metal cylinder in the middle of the chain) while you pedal backwards. It takes about 3.5 crank rotations to go through the entire chain. If the bike is on a stand, it is best to set all gears in motion and allow the oil to reach all the nooks and crannies of the chain (be careful, if you put too much oil on the chain, it will spray all over the bike as it travels) After running through all the mechanisms, use a rag to wipe off any excess grease. If you are using dry lubricant, leave the bike alone for a few hours until the oil is completely dry.
How often to use the lubricant?
The hardest question. how often you should lubricate the chain. Even at the expert level, this is not agreed. However, over-lubrication of the chain can damage the chain as well as lack of lubrication. The best answer regarding the frequency of using the oil. chain lubrication when required. It can be a week for some riders or 2-3 months for others. It depends on the conditions of the trip, the type of lubricant used and the number of trips made. Bicycle bearing grease
Bearings require a lubricant that will keep them running smoothly for a long time. This includes a lithium-based grease. It can last for a whole year without requiring replacement or addition.
Before applying it, the bearings must be rinsed with kerosene and allowed to dry. And only after that, the grease is applied to the separator, which holds the bearings together, or directly into the cup, where, then, the balls are pressed.

The main advantage of wax and silicone grease is its durability. It is not washed off, so one treatment for 50-100 kilometers is enough. But caring for a bike with such a greasy product is fraught with the fact that dust and dirt easily cling to the chain. Then you will need to use a powerful solvent to effectively remove grease residues.
Unlike grease, this tool is made on the basis of Teflon, which perfectly repels dust and dirt. The lubricant will also cope with short exposure to water, so it will save your bike while riding in the rain. The chain for which the lubricant is described in this paragraph should be washed after rain, cleaned and re-lubricated to prevent oxidation.
Among the advantages of dry lubricant, it is worth highlighting its dustproof effect and low stickiness. Thickener grease is the second type of additive. Such a product, when applied to the chain, is very liquid and flowing, and then quickly thickens. The solvent evaporates from the composition, and the lubricant stays inside the rollers longer. It is important to quickly wipe off the grease around the roller during processing.
Wax lubrication provides long-term care for your bike. This remedy is suitable for dry weather, ideal for summer. The grease forms a thick layer that lasts a long time and repels dust. But in the rain or on heavy dirt, the lubrication is not as effective, therefore it is less durable.
In addition, you can separate the lubricants by packaging. Most often they are sold in bottles or vials and in aerosol cans. The first option is convenient because the lubricant is easy to apply to the bike. Repairs can be performed locally by injecting the product directly into the rollers. An aerosol is suitable when many chains need to be processed in a short time. But it penetrates the rollers worse, and you can also spray the grease on the adjacent parts of the bike out of habit.

That is, it is the inner parts of the bicycle chain that need to be processed, and not the outer ones. This is best achieved when applying the lubricant by the drip method, from bottles and vials with a tip. Taking care of your bike with these lubricants takes a long time, but the results are better. If you really care about your transport, then choose the drip method.
Spraying is much more convenient, easier and faster. But the quality suffers in this case, and it directly depends on the skill of the bike owner. The fact is that using an aerosol, you can accidentally spray the lubricant all over the bike. Repairs from this will not improve, quite the contrary. If the agent gets on the brake disc or pads, it can cause the brakes to jam and cause serious injury. On other parts, dirt and dust will stick to the lubricant, which also will not improve the condition of the bike.
The main advice is to use only specialized lubricants for processing the chain! Do not buy oil of any type or the notorious WD-40 cleaner, which only helps in cleaning parts. If you care about the environment, buy degradable materials that will volatilize faster. Bicycle care is best done if you know all of its characteristics and choose a lubricant based on them.
